Okay, let me just paraphrase a little for you. We moved out to the Fruitlant area back in May of '04 and signed up with SEMO cable internet (aka CableRocket). It only took them a couple of days to get out here, the guy knew what he was doing when he installed it with our router, so overall we were pleased. However, we started out paying $60.00 a month for 1.5mbps. A little expensive for 1.5mbps but that's all that was available unless we wanted something slower. At first we would have ocassional outages, mostly during thunderstorms.
Early spring of 2005 we had a lightning strike very close to our house and it killed some stuff including our modem and router. They had a guy at our doorstep the next afternoon and he simply replaced the modem and we were all set to go.
Last summer they lowered their rates and we were only paying $50.00 a month. A little better, that's what we were paying when he had DSL in Jackson. However, by this time, more people out here were getting cable internet. Since with cable you share a node with other users, the more people that are using the internet, the slower it is. I do frequent speed tests and there were some nights we'd get as low as 70kbps. It was very frustrating. By winter of 2005 they had lowered rates again to $40.00 a month.
About a month ago, we found out they were upping everyone's speeds but keeping rates the same. This is good news! Just this week they upped our speed and we're running an average of about 5.3mbps. I ran a test during the day when everyone is at work and I got an average of 5.9mbps. On a really busy night (like last night) it can get down to around 4.0mbps. But, you honestly cannot tell that big of a difference between 4.0 and 5.9 mbps.
So here's the deal. The older reviews below really don't apply anymore. SEMO cable is changing and for the better. Personally I am proud to be a member.

Throughout my networking career, I have had experiences with other high-speed ISP in other locations, but since moving here to take care of ill family, using the internet has become a nightmare at best. So hold on tight for this all too truthful (and common) exposure of "THE GREAT RURAL RIPOFF" by hometown mom n' pop operators.

Order time: OK Type: Cable PPPoE (1024k / 512k) but never reach more than 70% of this Modem: Terayon TJ-715 IP: Dynamic, 2 user, 5 email Backup: 10 free dialup hours Installer: Friendly, yet inexperienced (I had to show him how to config a router) Value: This word does not apply here. NONE Service: Nothing after the sale.
I experience non-scheduled outages on a weekly basis that last about 5 - 12 minutes at a time, but they are still a headache nonetheless. It is shameful that this is the ONLY wide spread option in this area other than dialup, and that they knowingly and willingly take advantage of that fact. This is exactly what an online experience should never be. I should also mention that they have a hidden 5MB per month bandwidth cap on their 100% UNLIMITED high-speed services. This is NEVER mentioned by any salesperson, in any advertisement, on their website or in the service contract. (Since been added to website in mid '05)
They also do not have any decent customer service, nor are they available most of the time during service hours. I say service hours because they don't even have 24/7 or 24/6 tech support. They rely on voice mails and email contact on their end (which they never listen to or read completely for the information) and then they call you back at their leisure with no more than silly basic beginner questions, with zero answers.
SEMO.NET packages w/ $5 additional per month to rent the modem.
UP Speed / Down Speed Price/Month
256k / 128k $35/month 512k / 256k $40/month 1024k / 512k $50/month
SEMO.NET = $50 per each 1024k; a WHOPPING $43/month higher than average compared to other services.
I mean come on! Look at these other REGULAR price packages. Verizon: 5120k / 2048k $40/mo Verizon: 15360k / 2048k $50/mo TW TN: 5120k / 756k $50/mo TW AL: 3072k / 756k $45/mo TX MO: 8192k / 756k $60/mo Comcast: 6144k / 756k $60/mo Cox AZ: 9216k / 1024k $65/mo Cox VA: 15360k / 2048k $70/mo Adelphia: 6144k / 756k $60/mo
Thats an average of 8192k / 1216k for $56/mo or roughly $7 per each 1024k

I live out in the country & our Cable Co (SEMO Cable) just offered High speed on July 1st 2003. My speeds are 1.2/256. So Far Im the only one in the Sub-Division thats been hooked up & they tell me as others get it, my speeds may slow down a bit, but im garunteed to run 1.1 megabits per second. Im adding this in as of 9/5/03 cause i just recieved another revised Cable Bill saying ...Internet usage exceeded the maximum allowed usage of 5 Gigabytes. I had no idea i had any kind of cap on what im allowed to use, I wasnt told this at the time of installation! My last ISP (Charter Pipeline) never had any kind of limit. I was charged an additional $20.00 on top of my usual $56.00 per month... Semo has just increased our speeds to 1.5 with no additional charge. They are in big compition with a Local satellite Company & keep sending flyers in our Bills asking us to stick with them...and that these satellite Companies Dont tell you everything up front. I do know this about Satellite Connections... you always lose reception (On TV & Computer) if the smallest cloud passes by. And they Dont tell you this.
