I had to go back to Cablevision from Directv after 3 years.
My apartment complex is replacing all the terraces where I had the satellite dish clamped to the terrace railing at the end of an 8 ft pole. The problem is they're not installing the railings for approx 3 months.
I did get a deal with cablevision io for 12 months for 39.95. I think they could upgrade their programming a bit.

I recently made the switch to the iO triple play package which includes discounts for digital cable, high speed internet and voice over IP. For me, I'll be saving quite a bit over the year from Directv. For me, the picture quality is better than I had with Directv with more High Definition channels and more international channel selections. Overall, i'm pleased with the triple play package.

I had all three services installed almost 2yrs, and now 40 Hi-Def channels included... when I sat back and thought about it, I have io Fam, with over 180 channels, I look forward to my News 12,, I can order movies as I need, I even get some for free,,, along with my high Speed internet,, which has been working quite well,, with an added firewall protection,, built in,, and the phone, with 40 calling features including free 411,,,,, plus 1 box, my bill has been the same since, even after my promotion had ended,,, I don't understand what people are complaining about, I get the same bill each month, unless I add something or remove it,, they call it partial month billing, ok, so what's so hard about that too understand..?? your paying for services that you have used at the time, and.....??? they have customer service open 7days a week 24hours a day..? where can you go for that..? allways someone to talk to..?
I have other friends who jumped over to FIOS,, one mishap, they don't disclose is the taxes and surcharges on everything, the video, the internet and the phone,,, they tax you on all 3 services,, oh, and get this,, the Box, they mount on the house,, needs electric to run,, it goes in to your electric,, and you have to pay taxes and surcharges on that to...? so over all wheres the savings there,, verizons customerservices is allways on hold, never there after 6pm,, differn't stories each time..? when I ask about my bill ..? after this mess, they switched back to Cablevision,, other who live in Comcast , went back to them as well.. with those 2 companies, at least you know what your getting for your money.. both cable companies only charge taxes on their equiptment and video,,, why would anyone switch ...?? stay with what you have and work it out,, who wants to sit around all day to have the phone company all day for an install.. ?

Ordered internet-only, but unless I get cable within 6 months, monthly internet price will go up to $45. Since satellite sucks, I will probably have to do this anyway.

We had hoped that we would have a better experience this time as DirectTV went way up in price so we got rid of them and went with Cablevision again. You get what you pay for. We had virtually no outages with DirectTV and some pixelation but not to the degree we have with Cablevision.

"Speed...sorta"
"Tech Support lacking, slow/no DNS, mail is spotty"
"FiOS is a better option for those who can get it."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

Answering the basic stats: I have Boost at 30/2, paying $45 a month for the first year. Install process was mostly easy. Have their home VoIP modem though no VoIP connection (still have a traditional POTS Landline). Service uses Dynamic IP, but not an issue behind a standard wireless G router. All the basics aside, here's the straight scoop.
I live in an area where we have a second/third-tier Telco and Cablevision as our viable Internet options. Cablevision on this count wins, hands-down. Not much of a fight against 1Mbps DSL with supreme filtering and no features. However, my comparison is coming from an area where we had Verizon for DSL (and now FiOS), which is not available to me. If it was, I'd switch back. here's the short on why.
1. DNS resolution. It's poor at best, non-existent mostly, and users should expect to receive time-outs or exceptionally slow resolution to even very robust sites. Cablevision's very meager tech support (more in a minute on that) will want to place the blame on everything else other than their overworked and underpowered DNS servers, and end up with a handful of reasons why you'll DNS time-out, including "It's your router" (which is the same one they promote when you get their service), or "We have no issues, must be you". What they don't really tell you is that while they have a fast network, all of their own infrastructure (their support site, etc.) are far outside of that network, so even when you want to post an issue to their Support Database about slow DNS resolution, you'll encounter -- you guessed it -- DNS timeouts. Should be embarrassing, but apparently they don't understand what embarrassment is.
The speed once you get something resolved is superb. The problem is keeping that stable and functional without wanting to put your fist through someone to get a look at the problem. Ended up subscribing to an outside DNS service to address this, am mostly happy.
2. Tech Support. Very well-intentioned folk, but they were a little dumbfounded when I spoke with them about doing a trace-route against their network and finding * after * after * just getting to their on-line Support site. Either they don't expect customers to know this or they hear it and want to tune it out. Like most in that field, if you give them a challenging problem -- something other than "What is my SMTP Servername?", they shy away or show little interest in follow-up. Typical Cablevision.
3. Mail sucks too. Probably about an 80% availability rate based on my checking, it could be more, but I don't monitor night-and-day. It's 80% there when I go to retrieve (4 of 5 successful). Not horrible, not great.
Again, as a service, it has its highpoints and lowlights. It's not all bad, but by far it could improve greatly by addressing the weaknesses in its infrastructure, especially when much of its territory is in Verizon's FiOS Service area. If I had the choice, I would switch back to Verizon as their technical support was far superior and would see issues (albeit few) to resolution capably.

If not for the Forums, I'd go nuts. Theres always someone other then me that has it worse off. 9 out of 10 times it comes down to your patience factor. Don't panic the speed will return
Its still the biggest bang for your hard earned dollar I've seen. Not that fios is any better...Lets face it the majority of us just sit there and watch the speed meter anyways.

"Fast speeds..."
"Can't beat the speed for the price..."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money:

Before I begin, two 'disclaimers'...
- The $29.95 is because I opted for the Triple Play (VoIP, Digital TV, and Internet)
- The 18 Days from order to sucess is because right as I moved into my apartment, I was traveling during the week, so I had to schedule a weekend appointment; this is not Cablevision's fault in any way
Initial setup had one hiccup; from what the technician said, the "provisioning servers are down..." What that meant was my cable modem (internet and VoIP) didn't go active immediately. The install occured around 4 - 5pm on a Saturday evening and I was online by late that evening. One advantage was that I got ALL, and I mean ALL the channels on digital until it correctly provisioned my box.
Internet (aka Optimum OnLine): OOL speeds are 10Mbps / 1Mbps and I normally test in the upper 8Mbps range with frequent tests into the 9Mbps range for download speeds and generaly test in the upper 800Kbps and frequent tests in the lower 900Kbps range for the upload speeds. The only "outages" I have had have been because OOL doesn't seem to like the Spanning Tree Protocol my Linksys WRT54GS router w/ Sveasoft Talisman v1.0.5 firmware runs when using WDS. If I understand the issue correctly, the router cannot pull (or in my case, renew) an IP when STP is active. All it takes is disabling STP, renew the IP, and then re-enable STP. A hassle, but worth it for the features of Sveasoft Talisman firmware. I do at times seem to have speed problems. Often, when testing using the 'official' BBR speed sites, it runs through the initial download tests very fast and every so often during one of the larger file downloads it just stalls (for a reason I have not found yet) for about 5 seconds then picks back up at full speed. This stall seems to be calculated into my speeds and the results in these cases are misleading. Lately, I have been using a speedtest site from SpeakEasy and see more consistent results. Since hooking up my router in June '05 I have had the same IP which is VERY nice even though "technically" it is a Dynamic IP allocation. I am currently monitoring my connection with BBR and have not seen an outage other than related to the STP issue. My only complaint about my service is that the ping times to the west coast (80 - 90ms range) are too high for my picky nature when playing Xbox Live games... but OOL can't control it too much, so I don't hold it against them.
VoIP (aka Optimum Voice): I travel a lot and have two cell phones... so I didn't really need/want OV but I figured internet and cable tv alone (without the triple play package) could well reach nearly $100 (each portion of the triple play is $29.95 * 3 - ~$90), so why not. So, I rarely use my OV but when I do I can tell no difference from the days of using 'normal' phone. The best thing about OV is that the phone jack resides on the supplied cable modem and thus OV doesn't go through my router and from my experience, gaming/downloads & voip are not affected by one another.
Update: In June '06, I moved from Lakewood to Neptune. Apparently, since I crossed a County line, Cablevision wanted to setup a whole new account. At first, I didn't like the idea, but apparently by doing so I got the Triple Play deal again... so whatever. I did have to switch phone numbers, but no biggie as everyone uses my cell anyway.
Cablevision insisted that a tech had to come INSIDE my apartment to set up the service. When I transferred my equipment EVERYTHING worked fine. However, because of the new account, they had to swap out both the Cable box and Cable Modem; whatever.
I did get three more months of bills for the OLD account; Cablevision kept telling me the appt to disconnect the service kept getting moved and to ignore the bills...... that was extremely annoying but eventually the bills stopped coming (and so far my credit rating is intact!)
Speeds were fine, but was still having the 'hiccup' in speed tests. The hiccup got worse when I upgraded to Boost (30Mbps). I eventually figured out the router, a WRT54GS v2, was the culprit as the v2 of the WRTs has some issues. Overclocking helped, but I eventually moved to a WRTSL54GS which has a much faster CPU and I am now testing at over 25Mbps Down (max test so far about 28Mbps) and over 4Mbps Up. Also, no more 'hiccups' using the BBR speed tests.
Also, I've since moved away from Sveasoft to dd-wrt. What was I ever thinking with Sveasoft?!?!

I have had this service since 12/22/2004. The cost is $39.95 per month for 1 meg down and 500 k up. If you lease the modem that's $5.00 more each month, you can choose to provide your own docsis 2.0 modem, and waive the lease fee. There is another plan at $24.95 that is slower and includes the modem. The service has been great only one outage, and it was repaired well before estimated. The customer service and technical support are great. In an area without much competition its surprising that the service is so good. My speed is fast enough to allow for my VOIP to work just fine, with good sound quality. The last couple of weeks speed has diminished slightly from time to time. Apparently the service is becoming quite popular and more fiber capacity is being added to alleviate fluctuations in service level during peak hours. I had HIS via cable in the Phoenix area and it was not as reliable as this. I have tried dial up, and its horrid here very few companies with local POP's and those that do have them are congested and slow. The satellite alternatives are horrid with VOIP, don't even think about it. For $89.99 per month with StarBand it was no better than dial up, and the service was down for over a week due to a satellite glitch. My money is on Cablevision's product, for the money and wider availability than DSL. Yes DSL is in Payson, however few can get it because of distance, though it is competitively priced, and a constant speed. 07/06 lightning struck, and destroyed my computer, router, vonage equipment, printer, totaling $1800 Cablevision aka NPG Cable accepted no responsibility, even charging me to use a modem. I am switching to DSL with Qwest. NPG's speeds have slowed, and it bottlenecks much of the time. This went from great to horrible over time.
