(moved original post to OOL review)

Cablevisions tv service has been fine, just as good as the next guy. Its nice getting HDTV feeds free of charge and a free HDTV STB to use. My only complaint with their tv service is the onscreen guide. Seems to have alot of bugs but usually a quick reboot fixes it up.

I have been using Cablevision's Internet Services for some time now, and it's been many times they have throttled my modem. You can't use Voice over IP for too long, you can't upload photos, you can't send any large file. In short - you can't upload anything, because you're risking your upload speed to be throttled to 200kbps.

When you call them, at first they will deny that there's an upload speed cap has been put in place, so you have to let them know that you actually _know_ the cap is there. Then they will tell you that someone else is going to call you within about 2 days. When that "somebody" calls, he'll ask you if you agree that you will not be uploading anything, and will only remove the cap if you say "Yes, I agree". He will not tell you what the limits are, and in fact, noone else within Cablevision (customer support, Sales) aware that such a thing might happen (that is, your speed might get limited if you as much as send a photo to your family). So you, in fact, have to agree with something neither you nor they themselves know.

So if you want reliable, dependable service - go for DSL or whatever else you can find. Avoid Cablevision (and, for all I know, avoid any cable internet companies).

Past September was a time for me to pack up and move again. I had DSL with Verizon at my previous location and was looking for DSL again at my new home since Verizon had served me well. I was disappointed that I could not get the DSL because I was too far from the local switch.

I grudgingly contacted CableVision for the OOL broadband internet access because that was the only broadband option for me. I was horribly scarred from Comcast and was not looking forward to dealing with another cable campany. In a week, a local contractor showed up and installed the cable modem along with TV decoder box. Compared to Comcast experience in MA, it was relatively painless.

I had installed two UPSes for the cable modem, a few linksys routers, and intel boxes. When my electricity went out, the backups worked great. I was still working remotely with all my lights out. There had been one outage with OOL since September. It lasted less than an hour. When I had to call in the tech support, it was pretty painless. They had me go through all the stupid steps, but I'm sure they were given a script to follow.

When I signed up, they said 1.5Mb down and they had a free upgrade to double that. Tonight I see 5Mbps down, 1Mbps up. Nice. I hope this speed lasts throughout the week.

I no longer miss DSL and now feel comfortable with cable. The only future alternative is FIOS if they eventually come to this area.

Like I said above, the speed can be either great, or horrible. When we first got OOL years ago, the speed was unbelieveable. Nothing could touch OOL's speeds. I was getting around 10 Mb/s down, 1Mb/s up. Lately though, It got so bad that I actually got a hold of their tech support (I cringe at the thought). We were getting 500 kb/s down when we were lucky. I told them that it was sad that "I can upload faster than I can download." I complained about the speeds that I had been getting for the past few months, but of course it couldn't be their fault..."Connect the modem without a router, disable firewalls", etc. Like I'm about to do that- I may as well just torch my PC with some thermite. It'll do a good job destroying my data, but at least no one will have my personal info that way... They claimed that there was a great connection to the modem, so it must be on my end. Why would they want to admit that they have way too many people using the same node, or something has gone fubar at their routing points? That night, I steamed and wished that FIOS was available.

Of course, the very next day after complaining, my speeds were back up to where they should be. Problem behind my router? I think not. I'm probably just lucky, because I've never had much success with OOL's support. Well, to be honest, e-mail support has never really gotten me anywhere from any company...

Here are my test results from random days this past month...
    7921/117 kbps
    8646/124 kbps
    5088/139 kbps
    4979/139 kbps

First, let me say that I have no issues with Cablevision. Actually, I am a happy customer with my cable tv and such.

The service is always available, but I get the crappiest upload speeds. It is to the point that I have trouble connecting to my remote desktop at work. What can I say? Frankly, I'd rather have DSL for $29 at this point and sacrifice some of my download speed.

Is this standard business practice for Cablevision to be SO one-sided? Even 10 to 1 ratio would be acceptable. Beware before you sign up of this ... check my zip code: 06830... I'll keep running tests.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
UPdate 9/23/05: I have had OOL since Dec. 04 and I am very happy with it. I have no major problems with OOL. The worst thing that has happened is several times I could not access email and the OOL homepage stated there was no problem with email. Contacting tech support was useless because they refused to admit there was a problem with OOL, there must be a problem with my PC or equipment. OOL is a great value and when it works it rocks. However, if you ever have any problems with OOL tech support may or may not be helpful.

I just moved to Ronkonkoma, NY from Wichita, KS. I had SBC Yahoo in Wichita and I was very happy with that service (especially 2GB storage for email). Because SBC has no service in NY, my only viable choices for high speed internet were OOL or Verizon DSL. I had read good reviews on OOL and because of the triple play package Cablevision was offering (cable, internet and voice) for $29.95 for each service, it turned out to be best value. (Verizon package was $49.95 for phone and $29.95 for DSL). I ordered the Cablevision package 2 weeks before I moved in to my apartment, which is why it took that long to get service. The technicians arrived at the appointed time and set me up with cable, internet and voice in a little over an hour. Everything worked great. My only minor complaint is the technician who set up the OOL did not set up my primary email address. He told me I could do this myself using the email toolbox. However, when I tried to use the email toolbox it didn't work. The email toolbox only sets up additional email addresses. A primary email address is required to use the email toolbox. I called tech support and the tech support quickly set up my primary email address for me.

I haven't been able to run any of the speed tests on dslreports. The speed test on the OOL site shows download speeds of 3 to 5 Mbps (the test refreshes every few seconds). The OOL site does not test upload speed.

Summary: This is a great value for the money if you order the double play (internet and voice) or triple play (cable, internet and voice) package. I like the idea of having a single bill and single provider for my cable, internet and phone.
