Ordered Optimum online because i was going to live offcampus in new brunswick NJ for the year. Called and ordered on a friday, setup an appointment for monday at 2 a clock. Optimum online employee came right on time to hook up the cable modem. This service costs 29.95$ for the first 6 months and from then on if you don't have the family cable package or above it costs 49.95 $. If you do its 44.95$. The great thing is that there is no contract with them, its month to month. So if you dont like it after 8 month u just cancel the service and they won't charge you a cancelation fee.
Here are the speeds i get at the moment.
Download Speed: 8082 kbps (1010.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 929 kbps (116.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
9/18/05
Had a few downtimes, didn't need to call in to get it fixed. Down times didnt last more then a night. Only had one that actually lasted a night. The others were occuring when my ip changes and it would take a few minutes to get back online. Speed still extraordinary. From the new york road runner spead test i download at 1168 kb/s which is like 9.3mbits/sec.

"Good Speed when they want to give it to you."
"Very Gamer unfriendly. Heck, they throttled when only my Playstation 2 was connected."
"To much aggrevation dealing with them and their oversold service."

Basically it boils down to they have oversold the service and their network can't keep up. So to maintain speed of the network anyone that uses the network has their service throttled to a lower than advertised level without being notified. They feel it is perfectly acceptable to essentially steal from a customer by telling them they are paying for service level X and giving them service level Y as long as the customer never notices. So far I have been throttled 3 times. The only way to get unthrottled is to call them and then wait between 1 day and 1 week for them to call back. After which they will say you did something wrong and make you agree to not do it again before un-throttling your service. Here is what I did wrong, first throttle (played World Of Warcraft and received large patch), second throttle (played Guildwars), and this third throttle (with modem directly connected to my Playstation 2, played Socom 2).
It's quite obvious that the lies on their website about playing games can not be believed.
UPDATE: I didn't realise giving a 1 would still give them 20%. How do you give an ISP a 0% for a category?

I work out of the home most days. SO I have day time and night time experience for over a year.
When it works - WOW. When it doesn't - go fight city hall. Tech support knows less than I do. They charge a lot for the service with no real guarantee of OPTIMAL service. But - having tried Dial up, and two DSL companies - there is no other option for those needing affordable service with overall good performance.
I just got VOIP (from AT&T) and that is working very well too. Playing nicely in the sandbox so to speak.

Hello,
I have had Cablevision's Optimum Online for ~3 years now.
OL used to be fantastic. Always on. Always high speed. Reliable. In about the last 3 weeks that all changed. Customer service told me it must be a bad splitter. I bought a new one. Next week they told me the same thing. It seemed pretty obvious that the service was just degraded depending on the time of day. Kids home from school and awake? Bad service. 5am? Good service. We should be paying about 20 bucks a month for internet service in the first place. To pay 45 a month and have no service is incredible. Stay away from OL for now.
Bruce

I've been using Optimum Online now for about 8 months and thought it was time for a review.
Since I can't DSL in my area, I settled for cable. I went to OOL's website to get any info and was informed that the internet service was NOT available to my area. I live 3 or 4 blocks from Cablevision and can't get service?!!? I called them up and the cs rep told me that it was available to me, so I signed right then.
I was offered a deal to pay $23.90 for the first six months, since I WAS an AOL customer.
The kit arrived at my home 3 days after I ordered it and installation was a breeze. I did need to contact customer support to activate the service, but that went smoothly. My next experience with customer support wasn't so easy as my service was dead and the tech couldn't figure out why. He went through his script 3 times and still no service. Eventually service was restored, but he didn't know why or how. Since then the service has worked well.
Now that my first 6 months are up, I have to pay $49.95, but it's worth it.

Yeah, overall the reliability is great and so is the speed. But, god forbid you happen to upload for more than 2 minutes straight. The capping itself isn't so bad...just the fact that the don't tell you b4 hand that it can happen and when it does, there is no informing the customer. Then to get it removed you need to run around in circles jumping through hoops in order to convince them you're a rehabilitated inmate. That all being said, again, the reliability is great and so are the speeds...their VoIP is terrible and always failing...and their TV is great, specially if you get that and the internet for the price. So i suppose all in all its no better than any other ISP.
I can't wait for FiOS from verizon, i'll be jumping all over that.

I can not even begin to tell you how angry and disappointed I am with Cablevision! I moved here a year ago and was transferred to Cablevision from Adelphia. I was quoted, offered and given the basic package for cable. The actual viewable channels for this package were not described to me at the time but what I was able to view, from the same day the tech hooked up my cable boxes, channels up to 63 in the Wappingers Falls Cable Rebuild viewing area and I was very satisfied with that as well as the broadband cable access I ordered.
Last month I moved and took an upgrade package to avoid the moving fees and I was PROMISED that if I did not like this package that it could be canceled and I could go back to what I had before. So thats what I did
I canceled the package and asked for what I had before. The problem is that the channels I was left with only went to channel 23. I called and demanded what I was promised and have been told that I can not and should not have had up to 63 with that package.
Guess what people
its not my fault that Cablevision wasnt responsible enough to realize those were the channels I could view before they promised me I could revert back to what I had with what I was paying. Those are the channels I could view BEFORE the Tech left my house last year and HE was the one showing them to me!!!
Then I got a bill for $1006.52 only to find out that Cablevision didnt get the hardware that was exchanged when AWS came to set up the new place when I moved last month!! The tech left my house with those objects in hand! Ive had enough and I will be canceling my entire order. I used to brag very heavily about Cablevision and Optimum online. This will no longer be the case and I will share my experience with both agencies at every opportunity I get including my personal web site and letters to the Better Business Bureau of New York State.
They owe me some respect. I certainly would not take much effort to give me what I had in the first place. Their problem with mistakenly allowing me (a new comer to the area who wouldnt know anything about what Cablevision has to offer) to view channels that my package was not suppose to carry is not my problem. Their problem IS, however, to make me happy as their customer by sticking to their word and then deal with the situation that allowed me to get these channels
I did not alter those boxes and the tech was showing me these channels himself before he even left last year.
As I stated, I will be canceling the whole order. Then I am going to call Verizon and order the new 3 Megabaud DSL service they have. Then I am going to set up the dual LNB satellite dish and receivers I own outright and order television service from DirecTV. From this day forward if anybody asks me about Cablevision or Optimum online, including my chats with Amateur Radio friends that are listened to on scanners throughout the country, I will not be able to given a positive opinion.
I hope I dont run into any planning to invest in Cablevision!

I've been an OOL customer for 2 1/2 years. My experance has been pretty good for the most part. Back when I first became a customer, there was issues with Email servers going down at an alarming rate. This was the summer/fall of 2002. Since Spring of 03, I haven't had one problem with the email servers that wasn't related to an issue on my end. The other big problem is the horrible retention on the newsgroup servers...you are lucky to find a file thats more then a week old on it. I subscribed to Easynews, so I didn't have to deal with the problems that arised with using OOL newsgroups. The other big issue I have is the lack of webspace to share files on. How hard/expensive would it be to provide 10-20 Mb of disk space for webpages?
Another sticking point for P2P users is that OOL actively caps their customers who up load large amount of data over an hour or two period of time. I was using Kazzaa back early part of 2004 for a couple days and was capped, causing issues with my Vonage IP telephone.
Overall OOL is nice, but lean on what it offers (besides fast downloads) to the typical customer.
