"LOTS faster than dialup, excellent service from Fairnet"

I have 4 PC's in my house and had to share 2 dialup accounts among them. My wife and I both stay on the net for our jobs, and our ISP did not allow simultaneous logins on one account. So I had to have an extra phone line and an extra dialup account, which cost me about $50 per month.

I had been searching for broadband solutions so that I could cancel these redundancies, but there was never a good solution. We live in a rural area so DSL or cable are not an option. I thought about DirecWay but had heard bad things about the satellite connection.

I heard a radio ad for Fairnet, so I called on a Thursday for a site survey. They came on Monday and the signal was excellent from about 5 miles out. I called at about 11:00 am on Tuesday to schedule the installation. They came the SAME DAY at about 1:30 pm. I barely had time to go buy my wifi equipment!

They took about an hour and a half to install the equipment in my attic. My monthly price is $59, and there was no out-of-pocket money for the installation. I'm on a one-year contract and it was implied but not actually promised that my monthly cost will go down after that. The speed they offered was 1.5M down and 512K up. I'm getting about 800K down and about 150K up. The upload speed is a *little* disappointing but still much better than dialup. I set up a wireless home network using a Linksys router, wireless PC card adapters, and 1 wireless USB adapter.

The installation is now 9 days old and I'm really pleased with it. My speeds still blow me away when I remember how dialup was. The best part is that I now have always-on high speed Internet on all 4 of my computers for just an extra $9 per month over what I was paying before. If I had known this was available earlier I would have ordered it a long time ago.

    Thanks Fairnet!

Fairnet Wireless, (www.fairnetwireless.com) is my wireless provider and they serve NW & NC Indiana with 39 towers at the present time.

I called for a site survey on July 14. An appointment was made for July 17 for the survey to be completed. The tech arrived on the scheduled day within 10 minutes of the appointment, looked over the site and proceeded to climb around to get a good signal. The best location for the antenna was determined but the signal was marginal at 89 -90 RSSL.

The survey was performed using a residential flat panel antenna. My location is 5 miles from the closest tower and the LOS is blocked by a row of trees about 1/4 miles away. He informed me that 90 was the lowest signal they allowed for new installs. I asked about upgrading to a grid antenna and was told to contact the sales office the next day after he submitted the results of the site survey.

The sales dept. was contacted and they offered a plan upgrade from the residential plan ($59.95 / mo.) to either a 1M/384kbps home office plan for $79.95 / mo. or a 2M/384kbps SOHO plan for $99.95 / mo. to include the grid antenna. I chose the 2M SOHO plan.

An install was scheduled for July 21.

On July 20th, this region was hit with heavy rain/wind & lightning storms. The morning of July 21, I received a call from the sales office rescheduling the install for July 25th.

All of their techs were working on the system to get it back up to 100% after the storm damage they incurred and new installs were cancelled for the day.

Dave & Bill arrived right on time for the install. Mast was mounted, grid antenna & radio placed & aimed, and a signal of 104 RSSL was obtained in short fashion. They hid the coax under the ridge of the aluminium soffit so it is not seen except for a small section coming down the siding to the entry point. A lightning arrestor was installed at the entry point and properly grounded.

Account was tested on their laptop and worked fine with speed tests in the 1 mbps range down. We could not get my computer to browse, but I had to leave for work that afternoon before the issues could be resolved.

Dave gave me the WISP tech number to call and the next day (Sat) I called when I could not get the connection to browse. Tier 1 had me do the release / renew IP basics on the DHCP connection & reboot the modems but they referred me to Tier 2 and offered to page a tech, but I decided to wait until Monday when all the WISP techs were available.

I called Monday morning and spoke to a WISP Tech and in 5 minutes my connection was up and running. My account had to be enabled on their end.

Browsing is very snappy and initial speed tests are 1200 kbps down/ 380 up.

Everyone at this company has been very helpful and knowledgeable about their products and I would highly recommend them to anyone within the service area.

Update: 1/20/04 Speeds started to suffer during prime time, down to under 200 kbps at times & I notified the wireless support department. After extensive testing it was confirmed that my radio link was fine, traceroutes & speed tests were forwarded to the networking guru's and my routing problems were addressed in a very timely manner. Speeds are back up to 1300 - 1400 kbps even during prime time. This WISP's support is outstanding!

7-11-04 Download speeds have dropped to 800 kbps now with the trees all leaved out., I called support & they verified my signal has dropped from 115 to around 100 so that seems to be the cause. Service is still very good at all times. Pings run around 50 - 70 ms to most sites.

"Great service. The speeds are just as they say. The ping is great it beats my friends DSL ping times and speeds even."
"Contract"
"Its a great deal and you want to atleast give it a look. The only downside is the contract but if you know you're going to use."

I originally used Starband 2 way internet. Its was my only option at the time besides dial-up. THe ping time on this of course is pretty bad making online gaming and some browsing even aggravating. So I checked into Fairnet and they seemed great. However they were wireless so I feared the ping would be bad also but its not. For online gaming my ping is from 30-100 which is great! My download speeds are at about 110 KB/s down and 30-35 KB/s up. This is a great deal. You get good ping download and upload and you can even get it if you live in a rural area. So give them a look! I recommend them highly.
