Package: 768k Download 384k Upload Price: $14.99 Modem: Motorola modem Order & Install: Order was placed very simple and fast. The install went half bad. I got all the necessary equipment from At&t but they forgot to connect me at the DSLAM Box and I didn't get service until a week or two. It took 3 trouble tickets to fix that small problem. The first two techs came and checked everything and they agreed that it was at At&t's end and they got it to connect but it would disconnect in a few minutes. The third tech ended up rewiring some wires at the DSLAM and it ended the problem. CONS: For some reason they only offer 768k max speed in my area because my area is in the dead end of their service. Bottom line: Its alright for the price and I do get connections issues but there only like once a month, so it isn't a big deal Update (10/27/2011): Throughout time it has been getting worse and worse. I now only achieve a maximum download of 440k and but for some reason my upload is still great at 384k. Update (5/11/2012): About a week ago my modem lost sync with the dslam and it couldn't connect. I checked the modem and it seemed to be in good condition (tested it at my friends house). So I called AT&T and they told me that in order to fix the problem was to purchase a new modem. I told them that my modem was good but they stated that it wasn't because of the modems age. I was just tired of the bad service that they were selling so I cancelled the dsl connection and now have moved on to another provider. member for 14.6 years, 399 visits, last login: 7.2 years ago updated 11.8 years ago
My DSL service had come to its end, the year contract was up. After a few weeks, I received a bill from SBC charging me 200 dollars for early cancellation. I was speechless, how could I have cancelled an account while it no longer existed? Long story short, I was ordered to pay the fee without any proof of early cancellation. member for 19 years, 459 visits, last login: 2.7 years ago updated 11.9 years ago
gone - no longer a customer ------------------------------------------ Is somebody from AT&T reading this? Two days ago I posted this and my Elite is now 1.5 MB again! Comcast give me a good deal and I will switch. ---------------------------------------------------------- Update for 2011. AT&T Sales is doing great job of selling U-Verse but all these HD connections are eating up DSL bandwidth. Hey! that is what they day about cable. DSL is not supposed to be that way but it is. Read all the rants in AT&T forum. My elite connection all of a sudden went to 768 kb. It would only happen at night when people start watching their HD TV. 20 phones calls over 5 months did not produce any results. Got to know the poor tech. who showed up at door really well. Nice guy. Modem sync was fine all this time. Modem stats were good when the speed was slow. He could not do anything. Got level 2 tech. on the line. He refused to accept the reality. Finally little prodding from AT&T employee to their internal support line did the magic. No explanation was given to him or me but my speed came back within a week. Why should I still stay with AT&T? waiting for a better deal and I will jump. Can you recommend something? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- member for 22 years, 2050 visits, last login: 32 days ago updated 12 years ago
I'm an online gamer and actually knew better then to switch to DSL. I just had to try ATT DSL ELITE because they just finished upgrading our equipment on our street and it was $10 cheaper then Bright House Road Runner (which was a consistent & fast 6 mbps). I don't want to bash ATT too much since I understand that our phone lines were never designed to carry this much information and have so many people using it at the same time. Given this though, their advertisement slogan should be revised as follows: "Get up to 6mbps with our Elite DSL package but expect that it may drop to below 1000 kbps at any given time." They did send me an ok 2wire modem/router that has quite a range on it's wireless consistency (70-100%) when compared to my NETGEAR router which was a consistent 90%. After countless hours and numerous calls, I was finally able to get ATT to start a work order so that a tech could come out to my house. This is probably the most pleasant & confounding part of my experience. The first tech said he did find a problem on my street (a grounding issue-yes! problem found) and that a specialist would have to come out to repair. That same day another gentleman came out. He ran the test & stated that there was a serious problem. He went to the street and after about 30 minutes said he needed to test my line because he couldn't find the problem in the street. After doing so he decided that running a dedicated DSL line would probably help. Although the guys who came out were both friendly & knowledgeable and some improvement was noted with the dedicated line, I still have to wait for web pages to load---sometimes. I still get dropped while gaming online---sometimes and overall it has not been worth it. Sorry AT&T, but you've got a lot of work to do to get your network to even touch the bandwidth of cable or even other DSL providers. ******^^^^^That was then...This is now............I am AT&T Uverse WOW! I just upgraded to AT&T's fastest DSL speed (advertised as up to 18mbps) and what a difference as you can see from my results that I have posted. The cost is $55/month which is $20 more then the Elite speed that I had (advertised as up to 6mbps). They do have an offer right now where you get $10 off your first 6 months. After everything I went through as you have read above, as I was speaking with the AT&T UVERSE rep, who said it may take up to 4 hours for the changes to take place, my speed jumped + 7mbps. Amazing how quickly speed issues can be resolved when your paying extra for it It is what it is and I'm very happy with AT&T. I can't find a better deal for everything I get (best HD TV package, 5 cell phones, VOIP home phone & fastest internet for under $ 400/month). Hope that helps y'all. member for 15.4 years, 36 visits, last login: 12.1 years ago updated 12.1 years ago
Update 12-30-2011 Connection very reliable, I have the 6/512 package (19.95 for 12 months) and wish I could get faster speeds. I'm in a FTTC area with no U-verse and probably never will. 6 Mbps is not enough bandwidth with today's devices, especially with the number of them in my house. I would hope AT&T will at least upgrade these FTTC areas with ADSL2+?? I moved to an area that had U-verse to an area that doesn't and that aspect sucks, I loved U-verse. I may order cable even though I don't want to but gotta do what I need for the speed. Update 06-21-2007 No Problems at all. Update 09-29-2006 I downgraded to the 3meg service to lower my costs, $17.99 for 12 months. Service is still stable, I have noticed a slight increase in ping times due to what I am not sure. . Can't be beat for the price. RoadRunner is $44.95 a month for 5.0/384 service or $41.95 if you go with Earthlink. I would rather pay $17.99. I currently have 2 pc's sharing the connection and all is well, later. Update 02-20-2005 BBR been pestering me to update review, I am currently still using SBC and have not had any issues. I have the 6016/608 package deal and get consistent 5.0/520 speedtests morning, noon, or night. Pings are great, although I am not a gamer. I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop using the connection via speedstream 5100b and Linksyswrt54g router. I'm just glad I was able to weasle my way into this package considering my loop lenght is about 10kft. I've had SBC DSL since 2000 and it was rocky at the beginning but has turned out to be a great a stable service. I use the service for many different needs including internet as well as vpn access and all works perfect. I have the 2 wire home portal and have not had any problems.(guess i'm lucky) I have a cheapo wireless pc card in my work laptop and get great range throughout my house from the 2 wire. Old brick 2.5 story house and 2 wire is in basement and I get full strength in my bedroom which is on the top floor. I really enjoy the premium video that comes with the sbc yahoo package and the anti-virus software is not to shabby as well. Overall if you can get the service then do, it's been great for me and my family. member for 23.3 years, 2583 visits, last login: 4.3 years ago updated 12.2 years ago
AT&T Yahoo DSL is not that good in my area. Initially I had stable service and consistent speed of 2.5MB down/400k up. But the speeds have gotten worse. I'm lucky to get 2MB down and 300k up. It's usually around 1k down. I have a VOIP line that gets choppy if the up speed drops below 100k. AT&T customer service is bad. I get a different answer from each person I speak to. member for 16.3 years, 34 visits, last login: 10.1 years ago updated 12.2 years ago
Due to our rural remoteness, I could only get ISDN a several years ago when we needed good Internet connectivity. Recently PacBell announced that our area had been upgraded for DSL. I ordered the "Deluxe" package from SBC last week (8/27/03) for self install. The commit date for provisioning was 9/4 (two days from today). I also ordered an Allen Tel filter (splitter) to install at the entrance. (I hate dangling filters on phone cords!) The filter came today, the self-install kit from SBC came yesterday. I installed the filter and modem and did a manual registration using my Linksys router. The order was for 768-1500 up and 256 down. An average of three tests here shows 1103/244 and from the SBC site 1180/246. I still use my PBI mail account and Joan has a separate provider that manages her business www page so no need for all that Yahoo yahoo. Essentially zero outages after 6 months, so still a happy camper. Update, Sept '04: We signed up for the upgrade package to 3000/384 in late July and in mid August got 2500/350 measured speeds, for a lower monthly cost. Also signed up for Vonage and I can upload/download while Joan is on the phone with no conflicts. Update, Mar 06: Somehow we are up to 3000/512 now and have not had an outage in many months. same cost with no contract, month-to-month rate. Great service. Update, Aug 07: One outage in July of 1 1/2 days over a weekend. Has been fine ever since. Update, Apr 08: Ordered a service upgrade a few days ago and, after resetting the modem, our speed has about doubled. Now measuring 5000 to 5200 down and 640 to 670 up. Oh, and the cost is $5 less per month. We are pleased! Update, May '09: For part of March and most of April we had intermittent noise on the POTS side of our DSL line and frequent, but short, DSL outages. PacBell (AT&T) was very good about responding with a truck roll with a few hours each of the seven time that I called. They finally located the problem - DC on the line from the remote to the CO - and swapped pairs. We have had perfect service ever since. Update, Aug '10: I can't remember an outage or any problem since the May '09 issue documented above. Just solid, reliable service. Update, Oct '11: We tore down our old carport and replaced it with a new garage. This involved moving the Telco drop line from the rear of the carport to the front corner of the garage and into a new weatherhead that I had the contractor install. The technician showed up late on the day of appointment, but stayed until almost 8 pm to complete the work. He removed (on a rainy day) two old drop wires, rerouted the new two-line drop to the new demarc location in the garage and moved the NID and DSL filter to that location. I had a cross-connect ready to my new Leviton media panel in the garage and we shortly had our two POTS lines and DSL internet back in service. They are going to bill me for the work, but that is only fair since it was due to my construction. Kudos to PacBell (now known as AT&T) for a job well done. member for 23.8 years, 6206 visits, last login: 22 days ago updated 12.4 years ago
Well since I have no other choice than AT&T for any kind of internet service in my area... I don't exactly have much to go on for comparson. member for 16.4 years, 85 visits, last login: 3.8 years ago lodged 12.4 years ago

I have DSL through ATT (SBC really... I think) I'm supposed to have premium speed. Sometimes I do, most times I don't. My connection drops frequently, my browser locks up frequently, I find much of my Internet experience to be maddeningly frustrating. Is it ATT? Hard to say. I have Windows 7 64 bit, which is kind of a science experiment gone rogue. Svchost routinely takes over half my processor despite my efforts at troubleshooting it. I just replaced a Linksys router with a Netgear router. It seems my connection drops have increased. I use IE9 (no need to elaborate on that.) In short, my entire chain to the web is composed of links of dubious quality. Overall, I think my Internet access absolute crap, but I really can't confirm or deny ATT is to blame. I've done speed tests and got anywhere from 300Kbps to 3Mbps. Even on the best of days is not much of an improvement over dial-up. If I could touch 300Mbps, I'd buy it. -Alan.
