Previous to getting AT&T DSL here in Dallas, TX, I had Comcast... er, Time Warner Cable. Their uptime was around 65% according to my router. I would have WEEKS where my connection was non-existent. I even signed up with my cell phone company for an unlimited tethering plan so I would have a reliable connection while the cable modem was down.

Finally, after going for about 1 year without paying a cable bill (complaining about lack of service and getting my money refunded worked for an entire year! yes, it was that bad!), someone with half a brain at Comcast told me that it was extremely unlikely they could get consistent service at my house. I took that as my cue and left Comcast.

I signed up with AT&T and the modem was on my door step within 7 days. Set-up of the Efficient Networks, er, Siemens DSL modem was painless. My only complaint was that DSL + an unused phone line was cheaper than naked DSL. (I think the price difference is nil now.)

Currently, I get a consistent 5Mbps+ down and 600kbps up speed from the DSL line. I have noticed one outage in the two years I've had this connection -- and that lasted less than 1 hour. Impressive for a residential-class line!

Now if only they would get Uverse in my tiny little town of Dallas freakin' Texas!

    Re: Dry Loop DSL...

"Naked DSL" is not yet offered across the entire AT&T footprint so in some cases & areas a POTS line & service agreement are required for DSL service as part of a 'bundle'.

I am a Pacbell/AT&T DSL Customer for 10 years now and it wasn't until last year that "Naked" DSL was finally offered where I live.. I had a landline I never used and had to pay for it along with DSL service for 9 of those 10 years....

Now I pay $45/mo. for "Elite" service (6mbps down/640kbps up) and don't have a land line anymore (A Fully Cellular household).

Outstanding tech support from AT&T Direct forum at BBR

Reasonable caps, like Comcast's 250Gb's are more realistic.

Sonic, or DSL Extreme are good local alternatives I'm exploring.

I believe you, where did you get your information? I have noticed modem activity when I'm not even using my computer. Is it them trying to gain access to my computer? I have a firewall but I think they can still see everything a person is doing anyways. It's not just on the phone lines, it's also on cell phones too!

"Nice speeds when up."
"Almost 17,00 feet from CO, why don't they take that into consideration, I would have tried cable."
"Good service for the price."

Had issues with the loop outside of the home, I was told I am almost 17,000 feet from the CO ! I feel that if you are on a marginal line or a far distance from the CO, you should not be locked in a contract if you don't know beforehand that you are that far away and might have problems. They should let you have some time to decided whether or not you still want the service.

Service cannot hold up 1500 down/384 up so I downgraded to the lowest speed without crc errors, which is 784 down/384up.. At $15.00 or so, I can live with that, rather than the $20-25 or so I was paying....

Moved out of Rockford, moved to the Joliet/Plainfield area, got Comcast on a triple play, speeds are sometimes 15 down and 10 up (depending on the time, etc... )

Used CableOne modem for 5 years. Was happy with the speed and good service but the price got so expensive, I felt like I was being hosed. I was paying CableOne over $144 per month and the only extra I had was HBO.

My only other choice was AT&T DSL in this area (Biloxi, MS)

I ordered the 3Meg speed, with fixed IP address and was promised $18 per month (for the first 6 months) if I would not cancel the telephone service with Bell South (AT&T). They ended up not honoring the $18 per month price and now charge $37.50 per month. The modem supplied was Motorola 2210-02, cost $75 spread over 10 months. Setup was much more complicated than the Cable Modem. It got even more complicated when I added a LinkSys wireless router.

The order process was convoluted at best. Had to talk to one department for DSL, another department for keeping the phone. One department does not talk to the other. It was like I was dealing with 2 separate companies (which, in fact, they were not long ago).

We had an AT&T salesman call to see how we liked the DSL service and we complained about the modem requiring a power on/off cycle everyday, sometimes multiple times per day, and he immediately changed the subject. Not only that, he made no offer to try to help us with our problem! Amazing. I use to be in sales and I would have lost my job over such behavior.

I've had ADSL service for about 8 years, and only have had two interruptions in that time frame.Started with the 1.5/384 plan, later upgraded to the 3008/512,and finally got the 6016/768 service. I'm glad to hear that AT&T is bringing back support to the United States.

"No longer talk to India when calling for tech help"
"Too much complexity to get to an actual person on the phone"
"Still good bang for the buck"

ATT says the quality of my line will only support their lowest level (1.5MBPS) service.

Cable service is twice the cost.

Since going with a VOIP phone service I have changed to a dry loop DSL and have had many instances of dropping data and voice for brief periods. No fix available from either the VOIP provider (Phone Power) or ATT after 10 days.

SBC Yahoo is my third DSL service provider. (My first one stopped offering DSL and I decided to make the change from the second after hearing good things about SBC.) The order placement was easy. Customer service was fast and I received my SpeedStream 5100 modem sooner than expected. I was able to start using the service prior to my actual "install date", but at a lower speed than I purchased until the install date, at which time I called to verify with them, and my speed went up to where it should be. My contract is for 12 months at 47.99 per month for 1.5-3.0 Mbps down and 384Kbps up. My service has been in place now for a few months and I've had no problems. I spoke with tech support once when I first got the service to verify with them my service start date so I could receive the proper bandwidth. The Tier 1 tech support people are trained only to read from a script, but don't have a lot of actual knowledge of the tech issues. Unfortunately, even if you know exactly what you need, they are required to ask a lot of questions that may have nothing to do with why you're calling. Once getting past the Tier 1, it's fine--no script--just talking to a regular tech person. But, the customer service is also very friendly and there is not a long wait for calls to be answered.

I installed my own service. That went smoothly. As seems par for the course with most ISP's, there is a disk with lots of extras that I didn't necessarily want, but that's okay. I just didn't install it. My idea of having an ISP is simply that--to provide a connection to the Internet. I don't need or want all the "bells and whistles" so to speak. I have a dynamic IP. It's a PPPoE connection. The modem (SpeedStream 5100) and two machines using the service are hooked up to a Netgear RP614. Occasionally I need to recycle the modem, but the service has been good. I've experienced no downtime. I'm getting about 5.0Mbps down and 500Kbps up all the time. Uptime has been great. I've paid the same for less in the past.

There have also been no money/billing problems. It's all been what was agreed upon from the initial order contact. I've been happy with the service and have no hesitation recommending it.

at the time ordered, this was the only broadband option as comcast wasn't set up for broadband yet. (2003 i think? 2004?) since then, comcast has rolled out and seems reliable in the area, may consider switching. I was stuck at the 384/384 "grandfather" tier (that's what I heard it called here) until I talked to someone from at&t in the forums. now i'm at the 1.5/384 tier. unfortunately, if I were a few feet farther away, I'd be out of luck. but for what it is, Its only been out 3 times that I know of since I've had it, twice for more than 24 hours, and one time had DNS troubles where only a few sites were available. other than that, If you are looking for a reliable connection, I think this is the best way to go.

ordered the express package that says 384 kbps-1.5Mbps, speeds do need even reach 384 anymore.

I upgraded to the pro package about 6 months ago when I bundled it with my home line. Went from express to pro, supposedly from 1.5 to a 3.0 Mbps speed. Recently I've had more dropped services especially last Friday when I noticed my service dropped 10 times in one day. So I called in to fix it. They had a line tech run a check and when he called, come to find that the speeds I was getting was low for 3.0 package, and here's the kicker, finds out that my neighborhood isn't wired for higher than 1.5. I was getting speeds of 1204/468, barely higher than my speeds when I had the express package at 1200/308.

This house and neighborhood is less than 5 years old, with houses wired for FIOS. I've had friends in neighborhoods with houses 30+ years and they still get 6 Mbps dl speeds, so I don't know. Also, he said "they should have checked if you were compatible for the pro package before they did the upgrade". Of course, I'm not surprised they didn't (great work AT&T). So they helped me downgrade to express, and now that it's taken effect, my speeds are at 305/302, and the problem still isn't fixed, again, great job AT&T. Way to treat a long time customer.

    1 edit

    Not even 384??

Have you called into AT&T's tech support to troubleshoot your poor connection speeds? If you have the 384-1.5, I believe there is a tariff filed with the CPUC that says AT&T has to provide that very minimum speed.

Perhaps if you call into AT&T's tech support and Tier 2 performs a simple "rip and rebuild" will correct any errors you're receiving on the DSL line itself which could dramatically increase your speed.

    Something to think about.

probably on the ramp up 384/384 profile. After about 10 days he will probably reboot his modem and notice his 1.5/384 is back.

would have appreciated a post in direct but its a little too late for that.

I have Pro Speed. I got a very good deal on static IPs, but the service drops out at least once a month for at least a day.

Tech support is tough because when you do get a person, they generally can't fix a problem, they can only open a ticket for someone else to deal with. I have only ever dealt with very nice tech support people, they just aren't enabled by AT&T to actually fix anything.

As soon as I can move away from static IPs I'm going to find another service.
