I had broadband with Telocity before they went under, and AT&T has more features and is easier to set up. I considered TimeWarner's RoadRunner, but decided against it because of security concerns and because DSL, at the time, was said to be faster. I originally had AT&T's basic package for 19.99 a month, but last year I upgraded to their express package because it's faster and because it includes wifi at McDonald's and Starbucks. The initial order and install process was all right. It took longer than I wanted, but then I'm impatient. It wasn't as long as with Telocity. At first, I had only a DSL modem from AT&T. I don't remember what brand. When I needed to network more computers, I upgraded to a DSL router by 2Wire. After a year or two, that router became flaky and unreliable and I upgraded to their fancier version. It works very well, but it was annoying to have to keep shelling out $75-$100 for new equipment. That's probably just life, though. When I called last year to upgrade my package to Express, the process was very easy and almost immediate. I've had consistently good experiences with customer service and their service meets my needs very well. I didn't mark anything as "best" because I could imagine better than what I have, but it doesn't mean I'm unhappy with what I've got. I should also add that, before I upgraded to their Express package, they would raise my monthly price every year while advertising a lower price to new subscribers. I would call them and ask for the new subscriber price, and they would always give it to me.

Started out with the express but was having connection problems, so I moved up to the pro version, wow I thought I made a mistake as my speed went down instead of up. To make a long story short the problem was mine all the time. I had a bad wire inside my house which the tech quickly corrected when he came onsite, Since then (one year ago) I have had consistent speeds and have not lost connection even once. (added update 06/15/07 Am having a intermitten disconnect that they say is not happening but it is.
Updated 03/18/09
Have internet through U-Verse now and it is flawless, bumped up to "elite" that gives me up to 6gbs and it works ok but for what I do I hardly notice the difference from the "pro".. The gateway that ATT uses is quite large compared the the old modem/router but it does a lot more. Overall I am very satisfied with the ISP.

Plan: Elite Plan (6.0MBPS Downstream/768KPBS Upstream) 35$/mo
When I first heard this ISP was available in my area, I quickly called and asked for further information. The sales reps filled me in with all the technical data I needed, pricing, plans and conditions. He even stayed on the line with us even though it was 2 hours past his leaving time.
I chose to install the internet myself. They sent the modem box about 7 days later. Getting professional installation was 100$, however the DIY package included enough information that anyone could read and follow with success.
PS: If you have a home security system that uses the phone line, you may need to buy special filters from them as the DSL and the line may conflict with each other. However with Protection One, I didn't need to make any changes. Also, if you have more than 5 phone lines in use, you may need professional installation.
The following day my connection was officially established remotely and I was blown away by the speed. The blazing connection still remains today. I can play online games such as Halo 3 and Battlefield with very, very little lag. It is usually unnoticeable.
Connection reliability is great. Sometimes however, random calls can disconnect me. This is rare however (once a month at most), and when it happens, does nothing but restart the modem. At one point the connection was apparently down for service, but it was restored within 1 1/2 hours of me noticing.
I have never had a technical problem, so I have had no experience with technical support.
Overall this is a great ISP. I would recommend to anyone.

Telephone interface is now based in India. They don't know shit about ADSL or SDSL or anything but bathing in the Ganges. Get out of the river and into a school that teaches proper English and cultural skills. Also, it would help if they actually followed through with claim of seeking help for a problem. I asked for expedited service after a week of terrible connection and was told to wait for 3/17/2009 (St. Pat's Day)
Finally, they said if it was my modem, I'd have to pay for another. Let me see....if I don't have a modem, how is it they can charge me a monthly fee? Quite puzzling yet the norm for this abominable corporation. Maybe they can get some free stimulus dollars huh?

Still with AT&T DSL since first post here. Rock solid reliability, and pricing that has fallen over the years. The Comcast vs. SBC (now AT&T) rivalry has been good for the consumer.
The early days brought some frightening telephone exchanges from SNET, as it seemed the sales reps couldn't get on the same page. Our local forum here reported a wide variety of price offerings. Some got great deals and re-upped for new customer pricing incentives, and others got the high prices. Price tiers seemed to depend upon who answered the phone at SBC and was willing to click the right check box on the order screen? Weird.
Haven't had to call in for a while. Hopefully it's better now.

Spring of 2009 -- Still with AT&T DSL. It's still very reliable. No complaints.

Package: I ordered the 3000/700 package from ATT for 36 a month. Should of stayed with SONIC.
Order and Install: I placed the order a month and a half ago. I have spent over four hours on the phone with AT&T to get my DSL up and running. They have missed two appointments that had four hour windows, did not call back in the 24 hours as noted, and were dismissive of my issues. They have DSL to the house but have not replaced the old box on the outside of the house yet... That is all I have left to do is put in the damn box that they have known about for a month.
Customer service is in the Philippines and have to go threw three transfers and one hour on the phone to get to a scheduling technician. Don't even bother using them. If I have a problem, I will just cancel and change to SONIC.NET. I had SONIC at my last house and they are fantastic. AT&T just had better pricing but it is not worth the hassle.
It is hard to imagine but I think AT&T is worse them Comcast. Ugghh
I am using a Zoom Modem

| Is it a no sync issue or a sync no surf issue? In what part of the city do you live in? why? to see if its an issue with your speed. The "old box" are you refering to the one on the pole or the one at your place? 95% neither one has nothing to do with impeding your DSL signal. Unless the one at your place has a MTU.
FYI.........1) most is not all corporation here in the US have outsource customer/tech support overseas! cheaper labor. 2) 95% the trouble is with the internal wiring of the house which the phone company is not responsible for, why? deregulation. As long as the signal is making it to the main box at your place. AT&T has done their part. Its up to the customer to do the rest or pay the phone company to do it! which leads me to 3) That also pertains to all ISPs using AT&T lines, like SONIC, EARTHLINK, etc.. 4) why are you using a Zoom modem? No one at AT&T can help you with that modem, why? It has never been in AT&T inventory, thus considered 3rd party equipment. Basically you are on your own on that one. It worked with your last ISP? means nothing It may pick the signal BUT there is more to it than that. 5)Lately AT&T has been notorious for "overbooking" techs. Remember tech are people like us, with family responsabilities and other commitments. They work 8 hrs a day, anything past that is overtime. Which it is not mandatory nor forced. Talk to a supervisor, a field supervisor that is. Office supervisors can and will promise the world BUT don't have the power to deliver! -- The Future is uncertain but the END is always near! | P.S. I have COMCAST.....(no AT&T) in my area. Their service is crap! Their modem a Motorola SB5101 is directly connected to the cable coming from the outside. I have DIRECTV. I've tried 2 other COMCAST modems and 2 other systems ( 1 a MAC)same issue, packets get dropped all day long. Their tech support has admitted seeing many errors, but all they do is push a few buttons on their end and ask me to reboot the modem and its fixed!!! NOT....I'll be moving soon and changing back to AT&T -- The Future is uncertain but the END is always near! Jim Morrison | |

It's AT&T and it's so huge that getting things done is like dealing with the government. But the service was actually pretty good and extremely reliable... for us at least. I know of only one instance where it went down (red light on the modem) and that was only for a couple of hours. This is over the course of several YEARS, so it's impressive. But as far as tech support, forget it! Script readers from India. They can't answer ANY tech questions. All they can do is read a script, insist you do their routine (is it plugged in?) and then read the next step that their script tells them. It may work for the total feeb, but for most it's useless. And if you have a router installed... like most of us do, they won't even talk to you.
As far as the price, they get you on the signup deal, then after 6 months or a year, they jack it up considerably without any warning. The burden is on YOU to negotiate another 1 year block at a lower rate. They won't notify you that your 1 year contract is up and you need to deal with it. They simply raise the rate and hope you don't notice. Kind of sleazy in my opinion.
We got the 1.5 service and received about that speed. Modem was a Speedstream 1500.

6mb download speed is good for $35 (plus $20 cash back rebate); since it was a speed upgrade, there was no install or waiting other than 3-4 hours for the higher speed to kick in. I tried to upgrade online. AT&T's website led me through the steps and then kept giving me a "website technical difficulties" message for several days! Finally, gave up & called - then, no problem.
