Easy ordering, easy self install. Worked on day one.
Speed is inconsistant.
Good value, but not the choice if you're a heavy downloader or use VOIP

Signed up for Elite DSL in Oct. 2008 to cut my relationship with Comcast. The on-line order process was easy. Placed the order on a Saturday and I received a confirmation email Sunday and a call Tuesday to say my service would be operable on Wednesday. The modem came Wednesday morning and the self install was very easy. Up and running in less than 30 minutes. The only thing that wasn't clear was how to set the modem to "Bridged mode" to use it with a router.

In terms of availability, the service has be very reliable. Have had only one drop out that only lasted a minute. Part of my disappointment may result from the downgrade from Cable Modem with Blast to DSL. But the speed has been pretty inconsistent. It hasn't been horrible, but it's noticeable in large file downloads. My work VoIP doesn't like the inconsistent upload speeds. Skype is slightly more tolerant but has occasional issues.

I would say I'm at about 70% on the happiness scale.

2/11/2010

Well it's been 16 months now and the service has been very stable. I've only had one outage when my modem hung. It came back right away after a reboot of the modem. I still miss the faster speeds. Hopefully Uverse will hit my neighborhood some day soon. Not holding my breath for it though.

I'll say I"m at 75% on the happiness scale due to the stability.

6/13/2010

Take my happiness scale down to 0%

My modem died. AT&T is incapable of working with me for replacement. The sent one to my home address after agreeing to ship to my office. UPS lost the package. Now, not only are they unwilling to ship to my office, but they want to charge me not only for a new modem, but for the one lost in shipment. On top of that they want to charge $100 each while their own web site equipment page shows them for $75.

I'm disgusted by their lack of customer service. I've spent 3 hours on the phone with 5 different people, and been transferred to dead extensions twice. Between my phone lines, DSL and wireless, I send AT&T about $270 a month. For that money I get dead DSL for what is now 14 days and wireless service that doesn't work in my home. I think it's time to DUMP AT&T.

picked up cable modem there, works great for me. Not worth calling if you can solve problem yourself and pick up hardware in your 'hood asap. Dont know about you, but have a t-storm every day or so lately...

Re: go to best buy?

Agreed. ATT didn't even offer me a modem a year ago. I bought one at BB on my own, problem solved. A little peeved they didn't supply it, but the modem is cheap. Not worth being angry for too long.

Promotional pricing came up to be about this:
[($24.99x10 months)-($75 Visa Gift Card)]/12 months = $14.58/month
[($24.99x10)-($75)-($11 modem profit from eBay)]/12 months = $13.65/mo

Still going great

===

(Update - 05/22/2008)
Contract expired and I called AT&T to cancel. Retention gives me the following options:
1) Cancel and renew 3.0/512 at $30/month + $50 cash back + $ Make a profit on the modem again.
2) Continue 3.0/512 at $25/month (Normal price: $30).
3) Upgrade to 6.0/768 at $30/month (Normal price: $35).

I chose #3. Didn't feel like selling the modem again on eBay and wasn't going to save that much anyways. Figured the 6/768 plan was worth it. Order is supposed to complete by tomorrow, Tuesday, May 27, 2008. Oh, and retention department also made it a no commitment plan; that is, I can downgrade at any time but if I chose to keep the plan, I'm locked in at the price for one full year.

When U-verse finally became available in our apartment complex, an ATT sales rep came through to let everyone know. While she (Linda) really didn't have to do a hard sell on us (we had been waiting FOREVER for U-verse) she really took care of our order, keeping us updated all the way and ironing out any problems (for some reason our apartment hadn't been switched to green even though it really was ready for U-verse). I liked having a personal sales rep and she was really on top of things. Kudos to Linda for her hard work and a job well done. We ordered the U-verse bundle with phone/internet/TV. Internet package is Max (up to 12 mbps)

Our install date came on 5/28 and our installer (Todd) arrived on schedule. Our apartment was/is probably an installer's nightmare. Apparently our phone lines are a bit "messed up" in layman's terms I'm sure he was completely irritated with such a challenging install, but it never showed. He was super-friendly, informative, and considerate of how we would be using the service (my son is a gamer and would have been just a little upset if Xbox, pc, etc. wasn't able to function properly on the Internet). It took a while (over four hours) but Todd was determined and he really made it work for us. ATT should be proud and happy to have him as part of their company. I give huge KUDOS to Todd for making our install a pleasant experience and just for being such a nice guy.

We are using a 2Wire residential gateway with 4 pc's connected wirelessly. Speeds are right where they should be (even with 2 U-verse TV's on and any number of our pc's and an Xbox connecting at the same time).

Bottom line: We really love our U-verse!

Thanks for the review

as a tech at SBC DSL we like to hear this, we know there's alot of red tape to getting things done, but when done right and everyone is on the right track it actually works out great. We have hired alot of new employee's so please be patient there is alot to remember at DSL Dept of SBC and it takes getting used to over most Tech Support positions. Me personally just like to get people running no matter what the cost might be to my score at work.. but it's a personal choice. Enjoy your DSL and remember there is alway's someone around to help...

NEW***

ATT raised their rates, but I contacted the retention department and asked for a reduction. Although I could not get the $24.95 special, I did receive the same speed with a one year contract for $28.00, a savings of $10.00 per month. It was easy and the rep responded favorably to my request, for I'm taking a huge pay cut beginning in July. Thanks AT&T.

The contract with DSL Extreme ended and they offered no incentives to stay. I decided to return to AT&T (SBC). The sales information was correct and I did not have any downtime. The rep told me it would be a problem from their end, but as a customer I should not be involved in internal conflicts. He apparently made sure I did not have any issues with the switch. I ordered the Pro package, but was not receiving the speed and used the forum to seek a remedy. The tech had the issued solved in three days. The lag was due to my working during the day and inability to check for messages. This was no fault to the tech. Overall, I'm pleased so far. DSLExtreme was also a very helpful and knowledgeable provider.

At&T SBC Yahoo (whomever they are these days)

Hello, Your post advises to call for rate reduction. Are you on the
AT&T HSI ELITE package? This is the package that I am on and they charge $38. However, I pay almost $80 total and tried to get them to shut off my landline service in order to reduce my bill. They told me that since Verizon owns the actual phone lines that are in my townhouse that they could not shut off my phone service just leaving me with DSL. I am sort of suspicious of this until I thought about it. It appears to me that since they have to lease the phone lines from Verizon, they charge me double so that it will cover the cost of what they owe to Verizon. And, that just aint right. Your download speed seems to be quite a bit slower that mine. I guess my question to you is "do you have a landline phone service through AT&T and do you have the HSI ELITE package? I do not believe I need this phone line in order for DSL to work.

Re: At&T SBC Yahoo (whomever they are these days)

I have both Elite and a land line. I don't have any other services with AT&T. If you call the regular DSL customer service number ask for the retention department. I don't know if Texas speaks with the same representatives, but I suspect you won't. AT&T appears to be region specific, and I'm in California.

Happy with AT&T DSL. Only had two occasions to contact service. Each time I had to go through the retard hoops until they finally realized that the problem was on their end. I had to INSIST that the idiot on the other end of the phone run a diagnostic on his end of the line, and when he finally acquiesed to do so, said, oh yea, it's our problem (I guess you don't have to reinstall Windows now).

But, I've had this service for 7 years, it just keeps on ticking, and has been very reliable! Only had problems a couple of times, and got those cleared up quickly. The service is up and highly reliable 99.99% of the time.

messed up my profile so I was not getting PRO speed, 3Mbps download
It was really difficult to get ATT to admit to the mistake.

I subscribed to the Elite package, 6000 kbps download speed. I got about 2400 kbps at the beginning so I was really disappointed.

I spoke to and asked help from MrFixitSC and apparently, my house is too far from the CO. This is true. About 10500FT from CO.

Luckily, there was a Connecticut ATT line person who fixed my filter outside my house and magically, I got 4 MBPS which is what I really wanted and hoped for. Too bad I did not get his name to thank him via his management. We contacted ATT to find out his name to no avail. He usually serviced East Haven instead of Madison. The Madison person was not so good.

I will continue to support ATT-SBC since I have a lot of good friends who work there. Financially, ATT land line and DSL is really higher than Comcast HSI. I already am paying over $100/mo for HD cable, so enough for Comcast.

overseas support

In the last contract, the company agreed to bring support back (to the US) in (I think) 2007. That is when their contract with the overseas company is up.
