- latency of connection (client to ATM) is high..
- bad customer service..put on hold for aprox 10 mins before attending for our calls.
- congested traffic...which is very SLOW...esp on weekend.
- connection speed fluctuate like no-body business.
- not much option for its subscription package.. only 1M/512k... other country are offering much better package for its customer.
- traffic shaping is a BIG "No No"
- should increase its international link bandwidth by making good use out of our money instead of buying big n nice car (4x4 pickup/SUV) for their own staff and advertise their service.
- Session hang?? (always) should implement somesort of detecting mechanism.

Basically TMNet Streamyx is the only affordable ADSL service available in town (apart from Time Webbit) that has nation wide coverage(almost).
You get what you pay for . Quality could be better in terms of customer care & technical support. They should have 24-hours operators standby instead from 7am-11pm since the service is round the clock.
Hey, if you can repair & troubleshoot your own problem (from installing new modem, activation and line quality check) then it is a great service to get.
But if you are a newbies or not technically inclined and got more cash to spend, try look for other broadband service provider.
Now on to my Streamyx package.
- Subscribed to RM 44 (60 hours/month) package at extra RM 0.01/min.
- Its 384 kbps download and 128 kbps upload. Anyway if you guys want to use the 384/128 unlimited package, try the limited package first, since you can upgrade later but not downgrade!!!.
- Order was through online. A bit tricky here since I dont know when they received my order. Called the Activation center on the 7th day and got my DSL connection within the next 3 days. ( I believe they can activate the line in 2 days after received online application). Called the Activation Center again to activate my username.
- Registration fee is RM 75.00 + RM 50.00 installation fee. I did my own installation so minus the installation fee.
- Receive rebate of RM 50.00 for registration online . A plus for me.
- 1st bill received include the pro-rated amount 1 month. That makes RM 44 (first month) + RM 44 (second month) - RM 50 (rebate on online registration).
- 2nd bill received RM 44 (third month) + RM 75 ( registration fee)
EDITED on 14th March 2006 : Streamyx is a total letdown to Malaysians. They monopolize the country broadband but do not deliver as promised. Now they even introduced Traffic Shaping to curb P2P usage. However this info is not made available to new/future subscribers which I believe a total breach of ethics.

Just made the transition from UK to Malaysia, and from BTbroadband to Streamyx. My BTbroadband was so reliable as to make it elemental. Always there. always fast.
I've got to hand it to TM, it was easy to sign up and hand over the money. There were even 2 people on the helpdesk who could answer questions about using an ADSL router instead of the free modem. There were 2 who couldn't / wouldn't though, which is closer to the BT helpdesk: "Not standard? Not supported, bye!".
I was immensely relieved when it all JustWorked(TM). But what's this? Downloads at 0.7kilobytes per second? When did the Internet ever work like that? I can download sourceforge stuff from Taiwan at fairly decent speeds (50-60kilobytes per second on 1meg connection), but Taiwan doesn't have everything I want. If Internet is to work in Malaysia, TM needs to buy some connections, not just sell them. Or how about a decent mirror service?
I'm off to the local TM office on Monday to see if I can have my money back. I'm going to use it to employ 'content mules' to download data in the UK and swallow pen-drives full of data before travelling back to Malaysia. It will be quicker that way. How many pen-drives can you get in a condom, anyway?
Thanks for the useful service, dslreports, and to all the posters who take the time to. Sean

"teething problems; service disruptions during upgrades"
"you don't have much choice if you live here, they are THE broadband provider"

Waited for some time before I made this review. I belong to the early adopter set (registered october '02) for their 384/128 package. Price went from $88 to $66 now, no I did not go for the 512 "upgrade" package as I do not feel the increase justifiable (latency unchanged, no upstream increase = no thank you).
Installation was surprisingly hassle-free, from what I heard from other people, us early adopters got shafted. Hard. Horror stories range from incompetent installation technicians to hardware problems. Filled in the form at the local Kedai Telekom, after a couple days the techs arrived, installed the modem and software, signed, was ready to go.
Connectivity was pretty bad initially. This I do not deny. Streamyx sucked, and hard. It was like, you'd get kicked (disconnected) every other hour. The speed would fluctuate really badly, from almost-normal to sub-modem speed. From their launch until late 2003 (when Streamyx was "spreading it's wings" so to speak) was pretty horrible.
The 512 package upgrade was launched sometime in 2003, and because of all the instability I did not bother with it. After all it was creaking along just fine, I did not want problems with my line. It seems like everybody was complaining about disconnections, timeouts, and service disruptions. Sometimes you'd be unable to connect all afternoon and evening.
It got better on much later, and from the end of 2003 until now it's been plain sailing (touch wood). It would only be fair to say I'd never had to call a tech, but I can bet I was just plain lucky. Many others in my area complained of poor, slow service, and incompetent technicians. Browse the older threads if you don't believe me I'm sure most of the other Streamyx users can tell you that problems were the rule, not the exception. I was just plain lucky.
All in all, a so-so service. I mean, 384 download? Everywhere else I see broadband being offered at much better speeds. I know we're getting the shaft here. Unfortunately you do not have much choice if you want something other than dialup service here.
Let the buyer beware. My verdict? 4 out of 10. I'd give it an average '5' but in my case I was just lucky. Also note I was not spared from the outrageous service disruptions all throughout late 2002 and 2003. I just didn't suffer any line/hardware/connection problems that required me to call a tech.
August 2005 update: Well, it's been so-so recently. There's been a spate of slowness lately, most likely attributeable to the congestion at the international link - read about it in the SEA forums. I suppose TM is too cheap to upgrade their overseas connection. Strange, I read that some providers are giving good rates for their international lines. USD$20,000 a month surely is peanuts for TM to cough up.
My little friend in TM hasn't much to say, except that things may be looking up soon as middle management gets shaken around. I'm tired of all the myopic BS we end users put up with due to service companies having idiots in management. I'm sure the techs would rather just give us what we want, instead of having to cover for management fumbling the ball.
Unfortunately, so far there exist no other practical broadband alternatives to Streamyx. The others sound mostly like resellers, I doubt they have the technical clout or the deep pockets of TM. Like it or not, TM Streamyx is still the only option.

[update: July 25th 2005]
I've reduced the ratings for my ISP because their quality of service has not been as good as before. The speeds are about 60% of advertised. I truly believe that ISPs should absorb the anticipated "overheads" in the internet connection.
Since it is on PPPoE, the connection occationally drops without reason. Luckily, I'm on a router with autoredial. But it often affects my IRC downloads and MSN status (instead of Away, it displays Online after a reconnect).
512kb/s is more than sufficient for my needs as I still have tonnes of downloads still to watch. Generally, I'm happy with my broadband service after 6-7 months on it. Dialup is so painful now. I wish they could bump the speeds to 1-2 Mb/s soon yet maintaining the price I'm paying. The phone line fees are abit heavy too, since all my family members are on mobile phones.
All in all, DSL is still better than the wireless offerings in Malaysia and my advice to TM Net is that they should make hay while the sun shines :P mwahaha...
[original review]
Ordered 384 down 128 up.. It was working well until yesterday when they gave me a speedbump. Apparently it has been happening for weeks, in stages, upping the caps. I think mine's now 512 down 256 up.
I'm getting pretty good speeds with this service. So far, I'm very satisfied. however, availability in some areas might not be that good. Tech support staff are often clueless...
When it works, it works. Sometimes tho, sub-dialup speeds can haunt you when you least expect it. Or even outages.

July 3rd 2005
I've been using the service for about 2 months now and so far so good.
Although the Modem do loose sync it's usually less then a tenth of a second.
Speed are consistenly at about 95-100 KB/sec which is pretty much what one would expect from a Megabyte Plan speed.
It uses PPPoE and the modem and the wireless router i got from them works great.
Overall it has been a pleasure using Streamyx

I'm a user from Sarawak and i'm using 512k connection. I'm here just wanna make a short statement about TMnet Streamyx at Kuching here.
I feel not very satisfy with my connection nowadays. Sometimes my connection keep on disconnecting every 2-3 minutes and I wonder why. I've been to last month to check what actually make my connection become like this and the worker there ask me to wait for technician to come but until now I didn't receive any call or didn't see any technician looking for me.
One of the big problem in Kuching was, we need to wait for connection about more than a month. Some of them maybe half year, is this one of a services that we pay for? Poor services and poor connection performance? One of the Streamyx applicant have post this problem in local newspaper but the situation is still the same. And we need to pay for RM 50 installment. We must wait for a technician to come. U guess what they did? They come with own laptop, login using applicant password. After it connect, call their office to confirm it can be use. That's all. When I ask how to make the connection, the technician say "this u have to ask from your modem supplier". That's all. Is it worth for RM 50?

The package I ordered is 384k/128k for RM88 per month The package use dynamic IP for connection.
Ordered it around morning of 21 march 2003, by end of the day I got a call & was guarantee it would be available by mid-day the next day, and was good for his word. Was charged a heavy RM125 for setup but they won't come over to setup for you. I later found out they con me as seems that they suppost to go over and setup for the user.
Had problems surfing because I wasn't told by the company regarding the need to add DNS server addresses when asked during purchasing. Initial 2 weeks had several speed problems as some of the subnet ips assign to us (we are using dynamic ips) which are linked to congested network.
The following 2 weeks had some problems, I keep getting invalid username & password if I redial after a few times. Tried complaining had to phone more than 30 times keeps getting on hold and listening too repeat of a same boring song until times up and had to redial back. Managed to get through hotline service center after several days.
Complained about problem, was told it is going to be fixed in 5mins and I'm to off my modem as well as my pc(?) but problem wasn't fixed.
Complain again was told my password was corrupted & asked how I am able to login in the 1st place, was told it wasn't authenticated on first time which is a lie if you try a false password you won't be able to login, again the problem wasn't fixed.
Complain 3rd time on this they send me to my local exchange's tech who tried blaming my line, my modem & saying too many phones connected to my line (I have only 1 phone with microfilter installed on the line). Miraculously the problem crop up less later on.
TMNet the national ISP for the country upgrades the lines to help boost up speed. This helps a lot now less congestion, able to have smoother connection. I no longer had much slow downs with regarding to speed.
Update: 7 Aug 2003 There is a new package available for home users its 512k/128k for RM128 per month. The RM128 package they provide hotspot which costs around RM10 per month for free each month and a one time HyppTalk Prepaid worth RM30.
New users effective August 4th, 2003, customers who have subscribed for the tmnet streamyx packages without modem; Streamyx Basic 60, Streamyx Basic 88 & Streamyx Basic 128 can now accelerate the installation process by using the tmnet streamyx Self Installation CD.
Update: 30 Oct 2003 New pricing effective Nov 1st 2003. 512k/128k is just RM88 while 384k/128k is RM66. Due to lowering of the price, I upgraded to 512k/128k, I submit the form on 13th Oct 2003 and got it on 14th Oct 2003 which was very fast.
Update: 24 Dec 2003 Here are the full current pricing.
Streamyx Basic RM44 (US$12) = Streamyx 384k/128k 60 hours limit RM66 (US$17) = Streamyx 384k/128k without modem RM77 (US$20) = Streamyx 384k/128k with modem rental RM88 (US$23) = Streamyx 512k/128k without modem RM99 (US$26) = Streamyx 512k/128k with modem rental
Streamyx Enterprise (Comes with 1 fixed IP and 3 emails) RM410 (US$107) = Streamyx ADSL 1mbps/384k with modem RM688 (US$181) = Streamyx ADSL 2mbps/384k with modem RM618 (US$162) = Streamyx SDSL 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps with modem
Streamyx Corporate (Comes with 5 fixed IP and 3 emails) RM618 (US$162) = Streamyx ADSL 1mbps/384k with modem RM1188 (US$312) = Streamyx ADSL 2mbps/384k with modem RM1048 (US$275) = Streamyx SDSL 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps with modem
Lately there seems to be plenty of instability with Streamyx speed. A week or 2 ago the international links were down, and the announcement & hotline support staffs are blaming slowness browsing to us being infected with virus. How can infection of virus be the reason considering there is no slowness accessing local sites. That itself is pretty unprofessional excuse for such a large company to give.
The current package I'm on is 512k/128k for RM88 per month The package use dynamic IP for connection.
Update: Sept 1st, 2004 No problems so far. I think their connection reliabiliy has improved a bit. However from the looks of complains in local forum, nothing changes. Pricewise I think the package should be of slightly higher speed than this. Almost everywhere but in Malaysia the speed of packages have been increased.
Update: January 5, 2005 All current packages for home users are to be upgraded without any price changes. 512k/128k -> 1024k/384k 384k/128k -> 512k/256k Packages and their pricing can be found at »isp.tm.net.my/html/htm/product_s···ages.htm
Finally got my free upgrade to 1024k/384k. They suppose to give us between November and December. Some customers reported getting it as early as September. Complain several times through hotline & email to get upgrade nothing was done kept asking me to wait till after December, even my local area technician will not do anything. Complain again on Monday 3rd Jan 2005 at Kedai Telekom, the staff wrote in piece of blank paper! Nobody called me so complain again around 1.30pm 5th Jan 2005 through hotline, finally upgraded between 3-4pm 5th Jan 2005.
Very bad customer support, not only was I left out from being upgraded during the phase by phase upgrading period. I can say most people in my area was not upgraded at end of the upgrade period of December 2004. The surrounding had been upgraded early November. Very disappointed with Kedai Telekom staff for not doing their job, nobody call me back after I went there to complain. Also disappointed with their email service, seems I had almost all my emails bounced. During November & December period received a lot of conflicting answers from them.
