Value for money:

I started subscribing to Streamyx on the RM60 Home Package (384/128k) which limited me to 60 hrs per mth with any extra time being charged extra.

After 7 mths, I found the limited hours insufficient and DL speed kinda slow. Was contemplating upgrading to the RM88 Unlimited Home Package (also 384/128k)when there was the official announcement of a reduction in BB fees during the annual budget. As such fr Nov 1st, the 512/128k Package was available for the same subscription value ie RM88.

Feeling it was value for money as afterall I was earlier ready to part with the same sum of money for a lesser speed package, I submitted my application for the upgrade. After 3 days, my application was approved and computerised data of my ADSL access was upgraded to 512k line. However, technically my line was still on the 384k access port....

After numerous phone calls and finally a personal visit to the nearest Telecom office was the matter resolved and I was finally emplaced truly on the 512k line!

It's been almost 2 mths since then and frankly when the system is good, DLs are fast and good.

However there have also been bad times when one had to really wait for minutes before a page of a website could load...or even maybe getting a Page Not Found error for most websites! At such times even emails could not be retrieved!

Calling the supposedly Customer Care Helpline/Hotline did not bring any relief nor results....mostly blamed on viruses, worms and that the International Links were down.

These may be the signs and symptoms of a new "Baby" learning to walk but feel that "Parents" should provide more support so that this "Baby" is able to walk on its own without constantly falling down flat on its face!

Many new subscribers have unknowingly blamed their Streamyx problems on their equipment eg modems/pc/software,etc when most of the time it is a characteristic of Streamyx....

In my case I was lucky when I first subscribed to Streamyx cos 2 Telekom personnel came to my home and installed the modem (my own purchase) including setting up my PC and even showing me how to connect to Streamyx and access the Net and certain services provided by Streamyx before they left.

However it is not so In many cases. End-users were left to blindly fiddle with their equipment when they first subscribed to the service although a RM125 installation & connection fee is charged. It is felt that TMNet/Telekom personnel should ensure that the end-users truly has access to the ADSL connection and that it is in full-working order before they even consider charging the customer.

All in all, Streamyx is still the cheapest and easily available Broadband service for the majority of Internet fans/users in this country. However, we still have a long way to go to iron out all the problems confronting us to ensure a smooth and hassle-free access to the Net.

Value for money:

I am currently subscribed to the 384Kbps/128Kbps package which costs about RM66 or about $18 USD a month for unlimited broadband access. Of course given a dynamic IP everytime I connect as only the Enterprise/Corporate packages have static IP's assigned to them.

Application for the service diddn't take too long and it could have been completed the very next working day if i had a modem to hook it up too. Unlike these days where new customers are encouraged to setup the connection on their own, i was lucky enough to have a technician from the company come over and set up everything for me. However i have heard of cases where the customer pay up to RM125/$33 USD and there was no technician that came over to the premises to setup everything.

Initially the speed was quite apalling but after some tweaking i managed to reach an acceptable level of satisfaction of using the service. Diddn't have many problems with realibility or speed after that until a couple of months down the road when i had terrible problems. As a result of a faulty port at the DSLAM, i couldn't even synch with the DSLAM nevermind getting connected. Having been moved to a new port on the DSLAM, haven't had any problems with it ever since. Except for one occasion when the whole DSLAM had actually gone bad and i wasn't the only one that was affected.

While the customer support call center isn't very much help, being lucky enough to have the local technician's number helps out a lot as i get problems looked into without going through too much red-tape. Usually just call the call center to lodge the report and make it formal as many of the customers would have realized, the customer support call center is of little or no help at all. The company has introduced a new package which offers about 512Kbps/128Kbps worth of download speeds by adding another RM20/$6 USD but i haven't seen the need nor the results from the other customers to justify the need for an upgrade.

I believe the company has everything it needs to be a great ISP. The only thing it is lacking is the people to run in like a great ISP. The organization needs to be revamped and the technical ability of the key people must be improved dramatically. I guess you can call TMNet Streamyx a sleeping giant just waiting to be awaken and unleashing its full potential. All it needs is the right people as it is not a company that needs to worry to much about financial stability.

    Cheers!!!
