It took about 30 days for installation but in reality it would have taken only about 20 days. Let me explain.
I used to be a Verizon DSL customer but they do not give static IP addresses and they have too many filters on their network. So I switched to Atlantech based on the facts that they are local to me and are a wide-open ISP (ie no filters on their network). However, before they could proceed with my order, Verizon had to clear my phone line of DSL only to have it put back on with my Atlantech order (seems like there could be a better process). That took about 7 days.
Then it took 2 weeks for line installation and for Covad to do their stuff. Then I got my ZyXel modem (if you get a ZyXel modem you can TelNet to it because they don't send a console cable). I am neutral about it (up from hating it) but it does the job (I still like my Linksys router better). Then I have problems getting out to the internet because a) there isn't a lot of information about how the modem should be configured (more on this later) and b) as it turns out after 2 visits from a Covad tech, the port I was connecting to at the CO was bad. All this took about 8 days.
Now that I am up I am a very happy camper.
I also want to thank Scott (don't have a last name) in Atlantech's tech support group. He was very helpful and even configured a ZyXel modem for me after I couldn't get onto mine to make the necessary configuration changes. The ZyXel is apparently the new modem Covad is sending out but the best way to configure it is to either using a serial port to connect or Telnet as the web interface isn't all that. Unfortunately, it seems like the console cable is proprietary as I got a cable with the necessary pinouts but it would not respond to keystroke commands. Of course, no cable is included with the install kit as the manual claims. I spoke with a couple other guys in their department who also were very professional and helpful. The only downside is that if something breaks at night then you have to wait until 8am the next morning as far as I know.
I am about 10,000 feet from the CO and my download speed was registering at 928k and upload at 384k.

Update on 1/14/02
On Dec. 20 I lost service and when I finally got back in town a week later, I called tech support to resolve the problem. Atlantech had to call Covad because the problem was not theirs. Covad did some sort of testing and in about 4 hours decided they could not fix the problem and cancelled my service!!!! So the solution was to disconnect DSL from my line and re-connect.
Well, I can safely say that I was right that the reconnection would not solve the problem. Covad wants to send a tech out to my house to take a look. Anyone want to bet they won't find anything at my house? They were going to show up on Jan. 23 but thank God for Atlantech's great Customer Service. Chris was able to get a tech to show up tomorrow afternoon. I will update after tomorrow's visit.

These people are wonderful. I have just gotten residential DSL service installed . The process with Atlantech was smooth as can be. Calls were returned, an online schedule of my installation was available and accurate.
Since installation - now three weeks old, I have not experienced significant downtime (their email servers were down once in the middle of the night).
Questions about configuring my router, establishing my pop accounts, and creating my web site (a, moved from another ISP, and b, I chose the wrong option), were met with quality technical staff.
I myself have been in this business long enough to know that Atlantech is a well-run, well staffed group.
I'm very happy with my decision to go with them!

To those who are looking for a friend in the business...
I wanted to rate my service with Atlantech Online. I have had them for a few years now and have had nothing but a great experience with them. They have outstanding service with very helpful, experienced technical support. This level of service is rare in our industry and I would recommend them above anyone. Rock solid company and performance; attitude is everything.
I am one of the few with DSL in the DC area over 28000 feet and I only trust this connection to Atlantech since I know that any other would screw it up or go out of business. The management and the supporting teams are committed to excellence and it clearly shows. No overcommitting and underdelivering here. Simply a great business with happy consumers.

I was a happy CapuNet customer, but I'm an even happier Atlantech customer. I have a little batch file I run to determine base diagnostics -- it repeatedly pings my default gateway, DNS servers, and ISP's web site (by name, requiring name resolution). My ping times are consistently 10ms or less -- even better than I had with CapuNet. My service is the 1.5Mbps offering with one static IP address.
The service is almost never down -- not even little "burps" of temporary downtime (I'd see it -- I'd lose my VPN connection). Problems that I have seen are from their downstream providers. When that happens they quickly route elsewhere. And they have a regularly updated status page so you can see what's what without having to call in. (Obviously you can still reach it even if their downstream isn't working.) I have never found it necessary to reboot to make things work again.
The people at Atlantech seem very tech-savvy. I like that.
I had my service up and running less than a week after I placed my order. Of course it helped that I already had Covad service in place and just needed to change ISPs. Still, under a week is pretty darn good.
I used to have Verizon Online, for WAY too long. Oh, I've got horror stories. I work for a tech company where a lot of people have high-speed and I preach there with religious fervor about the HELL that is Verizon Online.
CapuNet was very good but doesn't do residential anymore. They switched me to Earthlink.
Earthlink demanded that I use PPPoE even for a static IP address, but couldn't point me to a PPPoE driver that was digitally signed. Sorry, but I just do not install unsigned drivers on my Win2k systems. I was quite annoyed that prior to the switchover they had told me that I wouldn't need PPPoE.
Enter Atlantech. The reviews here looked good, and I have not been disappointed. No, not just not disappointed. I've been thrilled about it. Get Atlantech if it is an option to you.

"No more service in NY... but that's not their fault"

I don't think I sumbitted a report when I signed on with them a year ago, so I feel obliged to do it now that I have just parted with them. Right away do I have to say that my departure was forced, and I would definitely stay with them if they could still serve me.
Now to the story and comments. I did an ISP switch to them last November, when Teliquest went out of business. Since yesterday, any ISP switch that lasts more than half an hour won't get a 5 from me (details forthcoming in a report on Bway.net, my current provider). With Atlantech, it dragged on for 3 or 4 weeks; it was not entirely their fault, because to get a release form from Teliquest had proved impossible -- so, as far as I remember, there had to be some sort of a 'timeout' before they could be pronounced dead and my line could be released by default. However, there was a period (10-15 days or so) when I was faithfully expecting a promised call from Atlantech, and when I called myself, it turned out they were ... well, doing nothing. So, overall, Install Coordination should have been between 2 and 3, but I dare estimate their contribution as a 4.
It went on happily since then, until 10 days ago the connection started to vanish for 30 minutes to half-a-day then come back all by itself. First call to Tech Support: "Where are you? Brooklyn? Oh yes, we did some reconfiguration there, should be OK now." It wasn't. Second call: "What's your IP?" -- "Such-and-such." -- "Username?" -- "Such-and-such." -- "Password?" -- "Mmmm... You mean my email password? Sorry, don't remember it, 'cause I have never used the email account you gave me." -- "No, the password to get into your box." (I run Linux, so one could telnet there.) -- "Pardon me?!" -- "I need to check some settings." -- "Sorry, all you can do is ask me. The settings are OK anyway, I know what I'm talking about." It carried on for about 10 minutes, after which the guy revealed: "Well, you know what... have you received a discontinuation of service announcement?" -- "What??!! First time I hear about it." -- "Oh yes. Let me send it to you. We have to discontinue service in NY at the end of the month. Sorry about that." -- "Thank you, bye."
The announcement mentioned that "This partner has made a strategic decision to focus more on it's other services and elected to discontinue offering Covad ADSL services". I called them (Atlantech) the next day to verify, and they reconfirmed.
You see now whence the mark for Tech Support, although, much to their credit, I must say that (i) this was the FIRST time, in a year, that I had a reason to call them, and (ii) all of my calls were immediately answered by a live person. (I guess the two facts are in fact interconnected, aren't they.)
So: Overall, I have been satisfied with them and would recommend them.

We are saying goodbye to the only DSL provider in the industry who was worth anything. It is most unfortunate to those of us who actually got used to getting what we paid for, talking to competent and friendly tech support, and getting our phone calls answered by a real ANALOG person, not a digital one.
I have been with atlantech since January of 2001, and after all the failed ISP's I had been with I was completely amazed. My DSL line was more reliable than a T1 and just as fast on the download side. Once I clocked a download from windows update in the middle of the night at a BLAZING 178 KB (not kb) per second! That is 1424 kbps in DSL terms! Not to shabby for a 1.5 MBit line! Their tech support, in the two instances of problems I had were overly helpful, extremely polite, and got the problem fixed as quickly as I have ever seen.
Even when I emailed them asking for a release form so I could get an ISP transfer they responded to my email within minutes and when I drove to the office to check the fax (It was 9:00 at night when I asked for the form) the fax was waiting there for me. Even with customers they had already informed were being let go the level of service was incredible.
Judging from other's reviews I am not the only one who will miss this company. This is the email I sent to the gentleman who informed me that they were no longer going to be providing Covad circuits and I thinks it speaks for itself:
Thank you very much for the prompt service. I am very sorry you are not going to be providing DSL in my area anymore. I Have been with many failed ISPs through which I had terrible intermittent service. Your DSL line over the past 11 months has been more reliable than your average T1 connection, and for that I commend you. I wish you would reconsider, even if the service is more expensive... Twice as much for the same line would not be too much for me. It was very nice being able to call about a problem and get a real person on the phone within two minutes every time.
I am having cold sweats about my new provider (As I look at the stack of ADSL and SDSL modem piled in my parts closet from the providers i have been with in the past). If you ever offer anything in my area please make sure I am the first to know.
Your sales person (Eric {Last name omitted}) and everyone in tech support are top notch, and as a network tech myself, I would be proud to have them on my team.

I have had Atlantech ADSL for over a year and a half. I have never been down for more than an hour or so. Down time is quite in frequent. Typically, I just reboot my bridge and I am back online. (I am a typical home user, light browsing and light email. Most of my internet use is at work. But, when I get home, it is always there if I need it.)
As far as I know, Atlantech is NOT Discontinuing ADSL everywhere. I called them and was told that they are only providing ADSL in the Washington, DC metro area. That's me, so I am still connected.

To make a verrrrry looooooong story short.
I was a happy Capunet customer. They sold all their residential accounts to Earthlink (bad). I requested a switch to Atlantech and they came through!
Once I was switched to Earthlink, I quickly discovered that I needed to switch to a different ISP. I was supposed to have a static IP address with EL. But no amount of talking to EL seemed to solve the problem that I wasn't always getting my static address. It seemed like everytime I called EL, they had to escalate my call to level 2, and even then, things would work for a bit and then BAM...different IP. I got very tired of this. Plus they had all sorts of account names for me and couldn't seem to agree amongst themselves what my primary account name was...I HAD ENOUGH! Enter Atlantech....
I called Atlantech. They said there shouldn't be any problems switching to them. Boy were they wrong! But the problem wasn't them, it was EL. In order to switch from EL to Atlantech, I needed to get a line release form filled out by EL that we could send to Covad so they would allow the switch. After several failed attempts to get this form, Chris, from Atlantech, worked with me and Covad to get things straightened out. Once he got Covad involved, things couldn't have gone smoother! Covad explained to EL what was needed. Pushed it through several different managers and got the form in two days and switched me the same day they got the form! Chris had already provided me with my IP addresses so I was set!
The only reason I say the transition between sales and customer service could have been smoother was because there was a couple of days in the process where I didn't know what was happening. But once things were handled over to Chris in CS, thnigs went extremely well!
So far, I am quite happy! The only things left are my email accounts aren't setup yet and no matter where I do a traceroute, it goes to San Jose first (I live on the East Coast). But I have faith that my email should be setup tomorrow and the routing will get straightened out.
I'll be sure to update this review once these nagging issues are resolved.
Thanks Atlantech and Thanks Covad!!
I am updating my review already because everything has been resolved already! E-mail is up and running and the routing issues were my fault...or really my mis-interpretation of the routing in question. I had always thought that if you did a WHOIS against an ip address that would tell you where the hop was. Well, thanks to Eric in Tech Support, I have learned that this only displays who OWNS it and not necessarily where it is located. So, smack my hand, I've learned my lesson. My first experience with tech support couldn't have been better.
My only wish now is that when Capunet told me they were going to move all our accounts over to Earthlink that I would have called and told them to switch me to Atlantech!

I've been an extremely satisfied customer since November. Although we had problems arranging for the initial install, because of the Verizon strike and subsequent delays, the Atlantech folks were always helpful and did their best to help with the install. Since then we have experienced absolute zero downtime, which is amazing, given all the horror stories I hear from friends who have other providers. I sure hope Atlantech can maintain such high quality service for a long time to come!
august 2001: I continue to get extraordinary service. Only one downtime since November, and that due to a bad rainstorm that knocked a lot of phone lines out. Atlantech crew was friendly, efficient, supportive, and arranged for appropriate service from Covad and Verizon; was back up in a day. There is always a friendly voice on the phone, and they always call back if they're busy. Top of the line, all the way.

Previously, I had Verizon DSL, and like many (most?) people, I had a terrible time with their installation, incompetent support staff, home-server-unfriendly policies, etc. Some people have had good luck with Verizon, but my advice would be to stay far away from them.
Atlantech has been extremely easy and friendly, and their staff seem like likeable, smart people--not sales drones or hoplessly-lost "customer care specialists".
I ordered the SOHO power user option, which is 1.5 down/384 up, 5 static IPs. At $129/month, they're not the cheapest providers for this--but their network is well-connected and they have a great reputation for reliability.
It would be nice if you could select the options you need a la carte -- I don't need or want email addresses, web space, DNS service, etc. -- but it seems that few DSL providers break apart services like this, or if they do, it often isn't priced attractively. Atlantech does offer static IP separately, but at $10 per IP per month, it was cheaper to get the home office pack than to get the IPs separately. I think their markup on the individual IPs is too much: $120 per IP annually for something that costs them a few cents to provide?
Atlantech has no problem with my running a Unix-based server, doesn't filter content or firewall any ports, so it's great for people that want to learn about setting up a server and serving web pages, mail, etc.
Special thanks to Michael Fiefer, who was professional and friendly, and answered all of my questions promptly.
