I had been searching for DSL service for our business for a long time when a techy friend suggested that I call Atlantech. It has been great! They offered the service we needed at a very reasonable price. As well as keep us up-to-date via e-mail as to the status of our account. We are now downloading/sending information at warp speed and the installation process was a breeze. I am very pleased, and would suggest their service to anyone who needs a high speed internet connection.

We signed the contract for 384/384 Kbps Flex SDSL service @ $195 per month on 5/25/01. At that time, the length of time for the install wasn't an issue because I had an existing connection. When my existing provider pulled the plug without any warning on 6/7/01, it quickly became an issue. Atlantech got me setup with a dial-up account and an e-mail box within a couple of hours. This allowed us to have some connectivity while we waited for the installation. Once Verizon finally did their thing, it only took a few days for Covad to get here and bring up the line. Our old connection used static IP's, which I wanted to do away with. Atlantech tech support setup the new router using NAT, but also provided some registered addresses for my mail server and some other equipment. We suffered the first outage a few days after the service came up, but it wasn't much of a problem. I was able to access the Atlantech Network Operations Center via a dial-up connection and found the reason for the outage and what was being done to correct it already posted there. That's quite a change from our former ISP, where it'd take three phone calls to convince them there was a problem. Everybody's happy with the speed and I'm happy with the support I've gotten.

I ordered the 1.5 meg dl/384 ul ADSL service, which I received at a $10/month discount, so it cost me $65/month. I have recently ordered a static IP, bringing the cost up to $75/month. (The static IP was solely for the virtual privacy network from my office and had absolutely nothing to do with hosting deathmatches. Honest.) The order process was easy, and I was kept apprised of the progress of the order. Verizon's strike last year is actually the reason I can't really give a days from order to success, because, while Atlantech had everything ready within three weeks, the Verizon strike started five days before they were supposed to prep my line for the DSL connection. As soon as the connection was made, though, Covad was prompt in getting the whole line finished. The bridge modem is a Speedstream, which I haven't had any problems with.
I have now had Atlantech DSL service for just under a year. I have found the service to be impeccable. Tech support has always been very knowledgeable and helpful. Also, AO sends out service notices so that customers know if there is any maintenance coming up and also to explain any interruptions. The only possible downside is that the office hours are somewhat limited, so you can't call tech support at 2am in the morning. Fortunately, the service has been so reliable that I haven't needed to.

Well it was great while it lasted. But Covad has raised their rates for ISPs with Atlantech's traffic, and I'm not willing to spend $75 a month for 1580 x 384 on no static IP. $65 a month made more sense. It is sad, but Covad is nearing bankruptcy, and until a CLEC with more money is able to take over Covad's spot that is not Verizon, I'm afraid I'm going to have to jump ship at the end of this one year contract. Rates shouldn't have to increase. Especially since a shared DSL line does not require a second line. My installation last time was a separate line DSL, and now that isn't even offered. Chances are the quality is going to be less with shared DSL, and I have to pay more? I don't think so. Everything in the computer world is lowering in price, except DSL. I wonder why that is? Could it be the companies that started DSL didn't have enough money to start the company, or the phone company is raising rates on CLECs? Someone has got to get the FCC on the case of the phone company raising DSL rates. Either that, or get the CLECs to lower their rates. Not everyone lives where there is Cable or Satellite access. There is no way I am going direct to Verizon for DSL. It looks like I am going to have to shift to Cable. If that wasn't offered in the area I would have paid anything for broadband. Service is a little less reliable, but it only costs $55 a month for Cable-internet only service which doesn't require Cable TV, and installation is free, and Cable allows you to get service month to month, and you get to return the equipment anytime to cancel service. It looks like Verizon is going to price CLECs out of business. With that kind of monopolizing, no wonder people are hesitant to get DSL. I believe some CLEC needs to be formed that makes its own lines and then sells it. It would be a daunting task, but worthy a startup company.
After a strange occurance on 4/3/2001 of not being able to send my mail, I found they had updated a network card on their end. I spent an hour with them diagnosing my problem, and it appears the IP on my account wasn't being given a DNS, and that's why I couldn't send mail. Within an hour we were able to solve it. The fact they will spend an hour on the phone with a customer to solve their problem shows how dedicated they are to their customers. Good job.
Outages of half an hour or less, even on weekends when their office was closed. This customer service is outstanding, always on the ball. Outages have only happened once every 2 or 3 months. Otherwise no complaints.
August 26th, 2000
Above.net had a temporary outage for about half an hour. Noticed that an 11 MB file was
able to download in a minute at one point before the outage!
August 11th
7pm Covad attempted to do a service upgrade out of the schedule which they had announced for my Central Office. They were going to do it at 2 AM. So for an hour and a half, routers through Above.net were losing packets like crazy. I called Above.net, and they have no Net Operations Center. I called Covad, and after much reluctance they passed me to their support department at Zyan Communications. Only then I found out how the severe the problem was, an 18 person hold line. While I was on hold the service got restored. It was the third hop of the router that was going dead according to traceroute, but really we need to be able to contact the NOC of Above.net to let them know when there is a service disruption, and not have to wait a whole weekend. before we can do so. Now mind you the service was clear going to some providers who were off of the second hop. It wasn't a total blackout. That sure should drop the connection reliability to less than perfect.
August 8th
The connection arrived as scheduled after the looptest. Despite the Verizon strike, Covad itself was able to get the connection set up. The Covad installer came at 8:10 AM, and he was scheduled to come anywhere between 8 AM and Noon. In an hour and a half he was able to set it up. Thank goodness the looptest was successful before the Verizon strike, otherwise the install probably would have been delayed even further. Ratings of 4 for Pre Sales information are due to the fact the brochure said 30 business days from signing to service, when it took 69 full days. Similarly the install coordination was a 4 because because Atlantech was not able to talk to Verizon directly thus delaying any communication directly to Verizon asking for an expedite on the service as far as requests to Covad. Value would be best if Atlantech was able to be flexible with its Covad contract and allow prorated refund at the end of the year, which they aren't able to do because the contract Covad has with Atlantech charges Atlantech 85% penalty for early termination of accounts regardless of the scenario, which Atlantech would pass on to the customer. So I will end up paying the full year unless Atlantech can work out with Covad a way to be flexible since this service order took so long to complete.
Connection speed from MSN's Speedzone is 950 kbps which is to be expected since that is an average of the upload and download speed, and that is right on the mark for a 1580 x 384 connection. Downloads take 100kbytes per second in Netscape, probably faster on an FTP connection. I am 8900 feet from the CO.
July 27th
Covad is now going to take 12 more days to complete my order by coming to install the line in the house and bringing the modem. All this while I have told them time and again every day I don't have service is a day I have to pay for without service since they have an annual contract with Covad with all their customers. Being that I am moving out June 30th, 2001, I have written Covad a letter hoping they could install sooner. I want to have service for as many days as I am paying as possible. It does not make sense not to get service for days you have paid, especially when you have paid $326 up front. Luckily with a rate of $65 a month, I am saving $20 a month over the course of at least 10 months when compared to all other ISPs offering the same speed in my region. Hmm...$200 is still more than $170 for two months of service if I had it on one of the higher priced providers from day one. That is assuming of course the install proceeds on that day.
July 26th:
56 days after my original order, the loop test finally passes. Bell Atlantic and Covad both were pointing their fingers at each other saying it is the other person's fault. Atlantech kept me informed nearly daily about what was happening, and for that I am gratefull. At that time I will update the mail and connection reliability rating. This is not the worse length of an order, as I know someone else who took three months. Install schedualing will proceed in the next four days.
I would hope that we can get the FCC to vote for allowing ISPs to contact Bell Atlantic when there is a problem. As it is now Atlantech says the FCC does not allow ISPs to contact the phone carrier. Communication is key here, and Bell Atlantic made it the worse for all of us. In an ideal world, the ISP could act as a mediator between the phone company and Covad or Northpoint when a problem arises, which it had in this instance. I am willing to give them a second chance, now that they passed my loop test. If anyone wants to sign a petition to get the FCC to mandate that all three parties be able to contact each other on the provider/Covad/Phone Company relationship, please sign my guestbook at »www.index-site.com/gbook/form2.html. It is essential that communication barriers be taken down if we are to get service any quicker.

I'll skip over the gory details of the 99 day install timeline. Thanks for dragging your feet Verizon.
I originally dealt with Atlantech a few years ago because my job used their high-speed service. I always liked their promptness and support so I went and ordered 1500/385 + 1 static IP (was 5$ extra), SpeedStream 5260 hardware. July 3, 2001 Speed test results: 1267/318 w/out any tweaking.
I'm very happy with Atlantech and their crew of hard working folks. Eric Jones put up with my daily (sometimes twice daily) tantrums, and was always polite and understanding when I was ready to go postal after Verizon constantly mucked the process up at each and every step.
Thanks also go out to Chris P., Eric hooked me up with him to finalize the deal. Thanks to Scott in tech support. And finally, thanks to the Covad guys who hang out in the Covad community forum.
The Covad self-install phone support squad left a little to be desired. If they couldn't fix things, their response was to give you a new modem. Hm, now I have two...
Finally, I gave install co-ordination 3 stars because when the DSL didn't work at first, I was told to call Covad, then someone else said don't because they've exhausted their support. I wan't sure who to call and when I should call them. Atlantech did email me some of their communications between them and Covad, which was a nice thing to do to kind of keep me in the loop.
For Business and Residential DSL, I'd recommend Atlantech to anyone, including my extensive network of friends.....all two of them!

After a nightmare of an experience with Earthlink DSL (took forever to get connected, the connection repeatedly was lost for no reason, missed appointments, voice mail hell for customer service and technical support, and no coordination between Earthlink, Covad and Verizon) it was wonderful to find a service that works. I have the residential 1500 plan and it is very fast and reliable where I live. The order/installation was much faster than promised and there were no glitches. The folks at Atlantech are knowledgable and they get the job done, usually in much less time than estimated. They coordinate beautifully with Covad and Verizon... the existence of these other parties would have been nearly invisible to me were it not for my previous bad experience with Earthlink, in which I had to learn far more about DSL than I ever wanted to know. It costs a bit more money, but it's worth it given the time and hassle that I wasted with Earthlink. Atlantech is great!!!

I ordered 608/128 ADSL from Atlantech on the 21st of May. My phone line wouldn't be installed until a few days later but with the excellent help from Chris in service I had my FOC date for the 31st.
The FOC date came and when covad confirmed that all was well I was shipped my self starter kit and was up and going upon its arrival 2 days later. From start to finish it took just 2 weeks. I have been very happy with my service since.
My company colocates rack space at atlantech (www.serveranswer.com , a division of atlantech online) so I knew the level of expertise they had flowing around the place. Not to mention the speed to our servers, without having to leave their network is extremely fast.
They met my very high expectations.

384K SDSL circuit, about 2500 feet from CO. 32 static IPs.
Ordered one day prior to when Northpoint circuit became inoperable, so time to live was important as long-distance charges for dial-up backup accrued.
This is my fifth installation over two years in three separate states and two ISPs, so I've gotten somewhat familar with the usual sequence of events. I've yet to see any DSL installation occur on time.
Order process was simple. Sales representative volunteered information about Covad's rebate for former Northpoint customers.
Original installation scheduled April 20, but apparently PacBell installed at the wrong address in a multibuilding office complex. Took Covad 6 days after the problem was found to open a trouble ticket with PacBell. Took Covad another 5 days to escalate the trouble ticket, and yet another 6 days to achieve resolution.
To their credit, Covad answered my calls promptly, courteously, with intelligent staff who acted on my behalf and did appear to expedite the process at my request. No run around of "have your ISP call us".
Covad contractor was intelligent and efficient, resolved WAN side routing difficulties almost immediately, even swapped out the old Northpoint hub.
Atlantech took care of several small problems with billing and IP addresses via email in less than 8 hours.
Lessons: - Atlantech is an excellent ISP overall, with good administrative and technical support. - Unfortunately, nobody but me seemed to feel that missing the original installation date was a problem. If it remains such a common occurrance, then the overall installation process is still broken. - Take as active a role as possible in the installation process without being a nuisance. Never assume that the ISP, or CLEC, or ILEC know what is going on and are taking care of it.

As for saying 3rd ISP is the charm well, this is my fourth and so far so good.
After getting started, hook'ed up, boot'ed & logg'ed in things went smooth as glass, Fast too, As for my previous ISP's i will not justify them by saying thier names here.
As for Atlantech my only real concern is my hope that they can keep a good thing going..
