Atlantech offers BWIS - Building Wide Internet System.

In buildings that that they serve, they offer CAT5 connected service. I got the 5Mb/s service for my client and it's fantastic. Throughput was as promised, or better. Outages non-existent.

They also offer VOIP. With a hardwire connection, there are no "last mile" issues, period.

We had a weird issue with hook switch bounce within the client's Partner PBX. When the first try didn't fix it, the head of Support, the Voice Products manager, and a tech came to the office within the hour; 2 of the three were industry vets. We found the issue, and traded "remember when..." stories after.

    My Other Reviews·Covad Communications
I ordered the 6 meg service for the same price i was paying covad for the 3 meg service. Once covad got the dsl off my phone line, it took 2 weeks to get my line up and running.
I had a easy question for tech support and they easly answered it without a fuss.
I got Static ip's with my order. The ordering process was great and flexable, able to meet my needs though it was not a set package.
I had tones of pre-sales questions, and they didn't have any issue answering them.

Schedule date for line up and running 12/20...

Daily updates say close of business tomorrow for an answer, still no line.

    Installation was rescheduled for 01/03...

01/03 No line Atlantech asked me to wait until after 6pm and then call them back, well guess what they CLOSE at 6 so when I called back WHEN they told me to, I got the answering machine.

COVAD says now 01/07 at the earliest for installation. (I called them since Atlantech had gone home for the weekend.)

01/06 late evening arrived home from work to find line was up FINALLY! Following previous instructions from salesperson, can't surf net, no connection. Following instructions from tech support email, connected and speed tests showed just a bit over 300 down? HMMmmm supposed to be around 600.

01/07 Called Atlantech support and they advise that the line is still set on "safe" mode and should be up to full speed by tonight.

01/08 Line is off of safe mode and is now around 520 down and 110 up. Dynamic IP with a Zyxel bridge so far so good.

01/18 No downtime working great now!

02/03 Still rock solid connection, unlike MSN I haven't even touched my modem let alone power cycled it since I went live in early January! Still getting about 512 down and 110 up a bit slower than I expected but acceptable.

03/21 Little update, just ran a line test...
    Results at »/quality/nil/1020999
Everything is going GREAT and unlike MSN I haven't had to call support even once since 01/08!!

04/26 Still going fine! No problems at all.

07/26 Line dies late evening. I emailed support and prompt reply back that they were doing maintenance and shut down the line by accident. Line was back up VERY quickly! Seven months and that is the FIRST outage of any kind, I haven't even power cycled the modem since January!

10/30 Cancelled service, price too high for level of service offered. Changed to Cavalier Telephone which after all taxes are added saves me about $40 a month in phone/dsl charges.

"They're great! Check them out if you're in their service area."

Going on 3 years and the service is still top-notch. Highly recommended.
    =========================================================
It's been about 2 years now and the service is still great. I don't have much to add because I've been getting consistently good service since the time I signed up. Give them a call if you're looking for Residential ADSL in the Baltimore/Washington metro area or Business IDSL/SDSL in the ET or CT time zones.
    =========================================================
It's been a year since I got service with Atlantech, and the service has remained as good as it was on day 1. Unlike some other companies, they have *not* skimped on bandwidth and allowed their network to get overloaded; it zips along even at peak times. So, I really have little to update from my original laudatory review (see below).

In my original review, I mentioned the one drawback that Atlantech doesn't give a free dialup account even for backup purposes. In response, they set me up with a free dialup which I have not had occasion to use, so far, because I haven't experienced any outages since then.
    =========================================================
I use my line to connect from my home in Baltimore to my employer in NY. A lot of my work is interactive (e.g. typing) so low latency (ping time) is paramount. I ordered the 1500/384 service with a static IP address.

The presales information was great. They gave me the name of the router that would be serving me so that I could ping it from my employers computer to get an idea of the latency. My questions were answered promptly via email by the salesman.

Installation was COVAD self-install Efficient SpeedStream 5260 with microfilters. Atlantech was ready in one week, but it took another week to get the self-install kit from COVAD (COVAD's fault). Once the kit arrived, I called to get my IP address; the phone was answered in 1 ring by a real person and I was able to get the information that I needed with no hassle at all.

Initially, I had some problems with the ADSL modem losing sync during certain times of the day. There would be times when everything was fine followed by hour long periods where there was a continuous cycle of sync/nosync. I was able to solve this by running a direct wire from my NID (the box that is the interface between the phone company and you) to my router. I also fixed up some of the inside wiring in the basement which was a big mess, and put a microfilter on the telephone feed from the NID so that I would not have to put a microfilter on each phone in the house. I would definitely advise that people try clean up the wiring and make a direct run if they are having any kind of modem sync problems.

The service quality has been great with low ping times and no slowdowns during "peak" periods. Testing at dslreports puts the line at 1271/322. The first hop latency to the atlantech router is 10ms and the total latency to my employer in NY is 22ms. Of course, total latency and ping loss can vary based on where you're going on the internet, but Atlantech has never been the source of problems (more on that below). They put their router statistics online at
»noc.atlantech.net/bandwidth.htm so you can see for yourself that they have adequate bandwidth.

They are occasional outages, but they are rare. They always keep you informed via email and their web page at »noc.atlantech.net. You can check out this page so see their outage history. This does lead me to my one complaint. They do not give you free dialup even to use for backup purposes.

Tech support has been superb. I recently had a problem where their upstream provider, MFN (formerly abovenet) started routing my packets to NY through San Jose, CA bring my latency up to ~100ms which is not horrible, but not the great service that I was getting before. This was not really atlantech's fault, but I figured they might have some contacts in abovenet to complain to. I submitted an email on Friday, December 28. I received a reply on Monday Dec 31 apologizing for the delay in responding and notifying me that they rerouted my packets through their alternate upstream provider. This drove the latency back down to 22ms. For residential ADSL service this is an amazingly quick and helpful response especially during the holiday period.

I don't use their email or DNS services, but their news service (Supernews) is adequate to my purposes (reading and posting to text groups).

    I only have two complaints:

They don't provide free dialup for backup. I suppose you can use a netzero account for that purpose. Of course the service has rarely gone out, so it hasn't had much impact.
They charge a $5.16 USF fee (up from $0.69). This is a cost that should be considered.

For these reasons I only gave a 4 out of 5 rating for value.

Overall, if you want fast, low latency, reliable service with great support go with atlantech. If you also want dialup service, you might want to consider toad.net as well to compare prices, since they give you a free dialup account to go along with your DSL. Atlantech and toad.net were the two companies that I looked at when I lost my Northpoint line; I'm very happy with my choice.

I have had Atlantech since May 2000 and I have to say that I have never regretted my decision to go with them. What very few times I have had to call them, the problem was explained or taken care of. The fact that they notify me when they will be preforming service on the system is also great and if an outage does occur, then at least they let you know what happened and why.

Again, as long as they keep up the good work and after almost 3 years I see no reason why it should change. I will stay with them and continue to reccomend them to friends who are looking.

I have been a user of Atlantech.net in Silver Spring, MD, since April, 2002. I must say that their service is excellent and even more importantly, the connection is ROCK SOLID. The only problem I experienced was that when Covad initially went to the central office, my prior line had not been disconnected, and so the install was delayed, but that really was my fault. As soon as Verizon disconnected the old line Covad was able to install the new set up in a very short time. Things were fine after that.

As to billing, the amount includes an extra email box and all applicable taxes.

For my needs, I don't know if a better ISP exists in the mid-Atlantic region.

Please note that the "Days from order to success" listed is not the fault of Atlantech, but of Verizon. If it were not for Chris Pirisino in customer support, I would probably never have DSL with anybody but Verizon. Verizon held my line hostage for two months, claiming that this department didn't contact that department and that department...........You know the story.

Chris was patient with me and relentless with his efforts to get my Verizon DSL disconnected. There is much more to this story and I have wasted enough of my life talking about Verizon. I will just say, his efforts paid off.

Two months ago, Atlantech was aware of the terrible problems I was having with Verizon's mail servers. They set me up with an account and allowed me to use their mail server while my hookup process was in limbo.

This ISP cares about their customers. They have excellent service and customer relations. My connection is incredible. I am here forever.

    Bravo, Atlantech....Bravo Chris Pirisino!!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------

I have been connected for a couple weeks now and I have done several speed tests. I am getting a consistant 1300/320 throughput. Covad had a problem one day for about 30 minutes and I was notified immediately by Atlantech of what the problem was. Atlantech keeps you informed, unlike all of the rest.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Another flawless week with Atlantech for me. I cannot describe how happy I am with them. What's funny is, last night I received an e-mail from my old ISP (Verizon, who just can't leave me alone) telling me their email was down again and they were working on it. It sure is a good thing I don't have Verizon anymore because I wouldn't have been able to read the note they sent me.

I kind of miss the Verizon "hold" music and the confused, helpless techs. I especially miss spending at least two hours a week on the phone.........NOT!! I used to get an ego boost calling them and realizing that there are people in this world dumber than me.

Oh well, at least now, I feel smarter because I am with Atlantech. It is kind of like that Holiday Inn Express commercial.............."No, I'm not a nuclear physicist, but I do connect to the internet with Atlantech."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Yet ANOTHER flawless week of DSL with Atlantech!! I love this company.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Still no complaints from me. All I have are compliments for this flawless ISP. I have so much more time on my hands now that I am not on the phone for hours every week with an ISP who doesn't give a darn.

I just can't believe I have had NO problems. I am in awe.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Keep up the good work, Atlantech. I am telling everybody I know about you.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Well, I thought I was going to be reporting my first bad experience, but as it turns out, I need to report another good experience.

Last Friday my DSL went down. I called Atlantech and was immediately given a trouble ticket number and turned over to a technician. The tech ran some tests while I was on the phone and immediately determined it to be a cable problem. He contacted COVAD and Verizon to alert them of this and promised to call me back when he knew more. What amazed me is, Atlantech knew it wasn't their problem, but they took it on their own to contact the people with the problem.

I was called back by Atlantech who had been in contact with COVAD (of course they didn't hear from Verizon) and the tech walked me through some extensive line tests with a COVAD representative. Once again, it was determined that the problem was not Atlantech's, and it was not COVAD's. It was determined to be a Verizon problem (of course).

In the mean time, my phone lines went to hell and I was forced to contact Verizon who, after two days of missed appointments, showed up to find a problem with my wiring. While I had no phones, Atlantech was relentless in trying to contact me to run some more tests and to see if I had been contacted by Verizon. I found this out after my phones were back up and running and I could retrieve messages.

Today, I was again contacted by an Atlantech tech who was concerned with my DSL service. He wanted to see if there was anything more he could do.

THIS is what I call service. Why can't more of today's business' perform this way? Is it really so hard for them to keep their end of a deal?

    Thank you, Atlantech.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Atlantech is still going strong. Still no problems.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

These guys are still ROCKING!! Every DSL Reports test I have performed has shown Atlantech to be superior.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

I would like to wish the Atlantech team a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. You guys have managed to maintain the very best DSL services available.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Atlantech is STILL the best. I looked through all of the latest reviews and these guys are still doing things the way they used to. Way to go Atlantech!!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------

Another year gone by with no problems from Atlantech. I have read all of the latest reviews and I see that Atlantech is still keeping everybody happy. I heard Chris Pirisino may be coming back to Atlantech (he may already be back by now). All this can do is make their service even better. Thanks for another trouble-free year of service, Atlantech!

I've had 1500/384 service with atlantech for over a year now, so I think I can make a fully informed review of them. Simply, they have been great. Order to install was quick, with the only issues being earthlink not releasing my line (only had to call earthlink 3 times to get this taken care of). I was having problems with my connection dropping, and the atlantech tech support were really helpful, but wound up exhausting all their options to help me, and suggested that I get the wiring itself checked out by verizon. Atlantech called to check up on the problem several times, which I thought was great. The problem did turn out to be verizon's outisde wiring, and since that was repaired, there hasn't been a single problem.

Let's put it this way- you call them up, a live person answers the phone, and they know what they're talking about. Try finding that anywhere else.

It took about 30 days for installation but in reality it would have taken only about 20 days. Let me explain.

I used to be a Verizon DSL customer but they do not give static IP addresses and they have too many filters on their network. So I switched to Atlantech based on the facts that they are local to me and are a wide-open ISP (ie no filters on their network). However, before they could proceed with my order, Verizon had to clear my phone line of DSL only to have it put back on with my Atlantech order (seems like there could be a better process). That took about 7 days.

Then it took 2 weeks for line installation and for Covad to do their stuff. Then I got my ZyXel modem (if you get a ZyXel modem you can TelNet to it because they don't send a console cable). I am neutral about it (up from hating it) but it does the job (I still like my Linksys router better). Then I have problems getting out to the internet because a) there isn't a lot of information about how the modem should be configured (more on this later) and b) as it turns out after 2 visits from a Covad tech, the port I was connecting to at the CO was bad. All this took about 8 days.

Now that I am up I am a very happy camper.

I also want to thank Scott (don't have a last name) in Atlantech's tech support group. He was very helpful and even configured a ZyXel modem for me after I couldn't get onto mine to make the necessary configuration changes. The ZyXel is apparently the new modem Covad is sending out but the best way to configure it is to either using a serial port to connect or Telnet as the web interface isn't all that. Unfortunately, it seems like the console cable is proprietary as I got a cable with the necessary pinouts but it would not respond to keystroke commands. Of course, no cable is included with the install kit as the manual claims. I spoke with a couple other guys in their department who also were very professional and helpful. The only downside is that if something breaks at night then you have to wait until 8am the next morning as far as I know.

I am about 10,000 feet from the CO and my download speed was registering at 928k and upload at 384k.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Update on 1/14/02

On Dec. 20 I lost service and when I finally got back in town a week later, I called tech support to resolve the problem. Atlantech had to call Covad because the problem was not theirs. Covad did some sort of testing and in about 4 hours decided they could not fix the problem and cancelled my service!!!! So the solution was to disconnect DSL from my line and re-connect.

Well, I can safely say that I was right that the reconnection would not solve the problem. Covad wants to send a tech out to my house to take a look. Anyone want to bet they won't find anything at my house? They were going to show up on Jan. 23 but thank God for Atlantech's great Customer Service. Chris was able to get a tech to show up tomorrow afternoon. I will update after tomorrow's visit.
