Update: 4 June 2009. They sent an email on Thurs night about a rate increase effective Monday morning. NOT a good way to do business. I called and canceled my service today. Update: 22 March 2006. After some techincal problems with my Wireless ISP my P8 service is running strong as usual. Update: 8 Jan 06. Still running strong with no problems UPDATE: 19 Sep 05. Still happy UPDATE: 18 Aug 05. Ordered the Uniden Packet8 package (since I now have broadband) - it got here in 6 days and was simply "plug and play". Made several calls with no problems Will update this if things change... For me, I am glad that I purchased this. I use it on a dialup connection overseas and this enables me to call me wife and family to keep in touch with them until I get back home. I would recommend this to all (especially military deployed or stationed overseas) that have access to internet. Makes all the difference in the world I would hate to see my phone bill without Packet8. I cancelled my service after returning from the Middle-East (no longer needed it)... Update: 4 June 2009. I do advice against using 8x8, as they almost doubled my monthly service cost with just 1 week of warning. I had them for 4 1/2 years and they were reliable, those random changes are unacceptable from any company I deal with. member for 20 years, 219 visits, last login: 14.6 years ago updated 14.8 years ago

I've been a P8 subscriber since 08/03 and have been very pleased. I ordered the service when I was moving to a new area instead of ordering local phone service through Bellsouth(ugh!). I received my DTA about 4-5 days after my order and was up and running through my Linksys router in about 5-10 minutes. I've only had one real problem since I've been using the service and that was cleared up with their support personnel with a quick phone call on my cell phone. I don't call overseas often, but when I do call my relatives in Germany, it only costs me about .05/minute. Overall I've been quite happy and recommend their service to anyone. 01/03/05 Update - Still going strong with P8. Have had no significant problems with the service since an initial setup problem. Would still like to see timestamping on voicemail as well as Caller ID with name, but those are small issues. Otherwise the service has been great. Was more reliable than my cell phone or my relatives POTS line during the 3 hurricanes this fall. Once I got power back, P8 came back with it. My cell phone was hampered by downed towers for weeks, and my relatives POTS line took 2 weeks to resolve. Good job overall P8! 10/05/08 Update - Still have my P8 service. No problems in all the time that I've had the service. Highly recommend their service to anyone as long as your ISP is reliable. 03/15/09 Update - Have gotten very sick of continuing problems with Packet 8 over the past 6 months. Almost every time I try to call my home from my cell phone or have people from the same or other cell carriers call me, the call never goes through. It seems like it rings forever from the caller's end, but the phone in my house never rings. I've contacted Packet 8 about it several times to complain and they always blame my cell carrier. Funny how it seems to happen with multiple carriers. Anyway I'm moving my number to another VOIP carrier and if I have the same problem, then I'm scrapping a home phone altogether. member for 21.7 years, 1404 visits, last login: 14.6 years ago updated 15.1 years ago
Are they even still in business? Even if everything worked as promised (a big "if") they're priced at DOUBLE or more than market alternatives. T-Mobile is half as much at $9.95 a month... Magic Jack is even less of that at under $20 for a whole YEAR. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the math here... I can't imagine why anyone with a clue would still be using Packet8. member for 24 years, 1649 visits, last login: 3.4 years ago updated 15.3 years ago
Where does one begin. Packet8 was quick to process my order I had all my phones in the office pretty fast. The website to setup the extensions is pretty easy to use and user friendly. After that I have nothing good to do say about it. Calls would randomly drop. Also right before a MAJOR client phone conference we hear there voice as if they are robots. We ended up talking on the speakerphone of my CFO's CELL PHONE!!. For those IT savy people... QOS is enabled on my network, the UDP and TCP port packet8 use's has priority on my network. Its even on its own dedicated switch with static IP's and static route to gateway... still major issues. It is also on its own network so there is no PC plugged into there little switch. And tech support !! HA dont make me laugh I have been playing phone tag with there tech support.. who has still let to call me. Honestly the money you think you save you would probably lose is sales or client due to crappy voice service. I am currently looking at coredial to replace them I will post a review on them once I get there equipment. member for 22.2 years, 129 visits, last login: 11.7 years ago lodged 15.7 years ago
So far we've been having a hard time with Packet8. Salesman oversold capabilities of system. Overbilling problems took months of complaints to resolve. System calls still drops out a lot and bad echos. (review was emailed from domain gmail.com) lodged 16.1 years ago
Hope the onner of the business takes interest in this review and cares about client satisfaction. There are many other companies that are hungry for the business, to choose from! Thank You. Best Regards. Krishna Akella (review was emailed from domain harlandfs.com) lodged 16.1 years ago
I am another Sunrocket refugee. Very happy with SR. It just worked and may have gone out of business because they could never get it right in the billing department. I had to beg them to take my money. P8 uses very little bandwidth which is a good thing but doesn't support faxing on their regular line. Another feature that I got real fond of with SR was email notice to my cell phone when I had a new VM. P8 allows you to put the email address in but out of numerous VM left I have only received one text message that a new VM was left. Contacted P8 and get many different responses from it should work to well if you didn't get a message we must not support that. On another note I contacted them about dialing out and getting nothing but dead air (mostly) or "I'm sorry we are unable to complete your call at this time". They only want me to reboot my whole system. This seems to happen at peak times of the day like right after the kids get out of school. Sounds to me to be a overload on a system. Calling them is a waste of time because you sit on hold for over 20 minutes. I end up giving up and opening a ticket on their web site that usually takes at least a day to get a response. I am seriously considering going to voicepulse because at this moment it has the best overall rating. member for 16.7 years, 31 visits, last login: 9 years ago updated 16.2 years ago
Update January 13, 2008: Never did get a refund of the overcharges by Packet8. It's only been 2 1/2 years of waiting so far. Certainly would _never_ do business with them again. I joined Packet8 in august of 2003 and was very satisfied with their service for almost one and one half. Packet8 originally provided solid, reliable service for me, including operational virtual numbers. Then they decided to get fancy, and in January 2005 tried to implement several new features. They failed miserably, apparently not having tested their new product before shoving it down their customer's throat. Very bad planning putting insufficiently tested software in a production environment! I stayed with them, despite their inability to 'fix' the damage they did to their system in relation to forwarding of inbound calls from virtual numbers. I canceled my virtual numbers in May 2005, and to my knowledge, my trouble ticket was never successfully closed due to lingering problems. So beware of inconsistent behavior should you wish to use virtual numbers with Packet8. And don't forget to include that nasty per number fee when you consider the price of virtual numbers. Due to some "internal problem" only a portion of their customer base received notification of their implementation of the "Regulatory Recovery Fee($1.50 per DID)" which was nothing less than a very deceptive defacto price hike. Some customer service representatives even tried to tell me it was a government tax, at first. The 'fee' quickly caused P8 prices to become unreasonable for me, particularly when they were applied to virtual numbers that do not work as advertised. Their attempts to fix the problem failed, and resulted in additional charges to my credit card that have never been fully recovered. Even though I had a sizable credit balance, my credit card was still charged additional amounts for their "Regulatory Recovery Fee($1.50 per DID)". I am closing my account and _hope_ to someday get the remainder of what they owe me from their mistakes refunded to me. I must also mention that on-line monthly invoices have been retroactively changed, as far back as three months, to reflect different balances and charges... I just happened to have printed before and after versions. How do they account for their revenue? Be forewarned, check your credit card statements _very_carefully, and print out each months invoice... they may change without warning! I closed my account on June 29th, 2005. To date, despite calls resulting in _another_ ticket being opened, and promises of review and contact, I have not received a refund of the overcharges, nor any Packet8 initiated correspondence. I must check if this consitutes THEFT at this point. member for 23.3 years, 6803 visits, last login: 1.1 years ago updated 16.2 years ago |
