Before I switched to Packet8's services I was utilizing one of their "competitors" (I use that term loosely as this firm's support, service and technology was worse than using a regular land line). I was spending hours per week dealing with a system that was unreliable. My average hold time was around 30 minutes to report an outage or requesting technical support. I was calling this company with service problems at least once a week at a minimum.
I got all of that wasted time back when I switched to Packet8. No longer do I need to reset my phone several times a day. On the rare occasion I do need to call for support, my average hold time is 5 minutes. When I call Packet8 I get actual answers and immediate results.
In my mind, Packet8 is THE leader in hosted PBX phone service. I strongly recommend this service.

I have used Packet 8 for my small business for almost 2 years. Due to Packet 8's innovative web based "PBX" we were able to go to a 100% home based business. Now I have employees scattered throughout the world and our clients can't notice the difference. Call quality is great, tech support is great - the web based PBX is good, but not great. The pricing on the phone lines itself saved us lots of money - not to mention that I don't have to rent a costly location for us to "go to work".

Still happy two years later, still an echo problem from time to time, but has been an outstanding service for us. Still gets one heck of a cross country workout in my household with us in AZ and family in Maine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---
My VOIP had a good work-out recently, in-laws from Maine were with us for nearly 6 months. We received/called numerous long distance calls during that time frame Maine and Florida. Not one single issue. I live in AZ so have a good ping to Packet 8's servers which seem to be in San Jose.
My wife talks to her sister in Maine at least 3 to 4 times a week for hours at a time, no issues. Wife reports slight echo, but also say line quality is much better then our pots line (which I disconnected).
I went with the Uniden Whole House System and couldn't be happier. Found a package deal at Wal-mart for 3 cordless Uniden phones for $98 and was able to register them with my Uniden Base Unit. Works perfect.
My DSl and Packet 8 has been flawless I've forgotten I'm using relatively new technology. Been plug n' play for me.
I was able to order the whole system off of their website. Gave it an average rating as I've seen better but it still works fine. Never used their Tech support so gave it an average rating as well.

I was tempted to get $30 plan that included all good features and unlimited international calling for select countries. At first I noticed some quality issues, but placing it on DMZ and static IP solved some problems. However, there TWO major problems.
First, taxes, it's 29.99 plan but after everything it's 42, almost as bad as POTS it was intended to replace. Verizon will allow you to dry loop but it will carry price hike of $10, so you can say that total VoIP investment per line is $52, so virtually no savings, especially since I don't call international that often.
Another problem is the unit. It's All in One (router, ATA, phone) Uniden UIP165P. First, the handset is POS and has terrible sounds quality, I had to use base unit to talk because the noise is so bad. Inference is to blame but my 2 year old 5.8Ghz panasonic (uses same band) doesn't experience that. Last but not least, there are problems making international calls, On few occasions I was unable to hear anything not even a tone, while other party got a ring and deaf phone. Still I'm thinking if I should keep it and port the number or just leave it till contract expires.

A tragedy from day one.
Without telling me they were going to do so, they disconnected my phone for three days. When it was installed the reception was impossible and I has not improved over time.
After a few days it stopped working and calls to my number said it was "unavailable". When I contacted them they said my prior provider, VoipYourLife had stopped my service and I must have asked them to do so. I said I had signed the form they asked for and assumed THEY had closed the account. It was then that they told me I had to keep both the VYL account AND their account open for 45 days while they were porting over the number.
Functionality has been spotty and most often completely unusable. I have never been able to complete a long-distance call after two weeks.
80510 - Telephone became completely unusable. I called and said to fix it by Monday or I will cancel the service.

Update 30 Mar '08 - No problems as long as HSI is working. Just changed to Verizon DSL. We shall see how it cooperates.
Update 25 September '07 - Still going strong. No connection troubles but seldom delays in calls especially to cell phones.
Update 5 June '07 - Noticed an increase in my bill that was not due to overseas calls. Turns out they are all federal taxes and fees. What started out at ~$21/month is climbing. I'm currently being charged ~$28/month. If they climb more I'm going to look elsewhere. Service still works well. I'm still happy. Website though recently revised, needs more work. It's gotten faster but is still difficult to navigate. Be patient, you'll find what you need.
Update 28 March '07 - Since I relocated from overseas I installed the adaptor on my brother's network and the phone worked. It's been almost 5 months now and I have had no issues with the Comcast service. I can now use more features like "Find me - follow me" and call forwarding. Was disappointed with the price increase since my last update as they did not inform us but, the service works and works well. Just ensure you have a tech who knows what he's doing.
UPDATE 29 Sep - Still very happy with the service. Glad I'm fairly adept at networks and computers because I've heard Packet8's tech support is second from the bottom. Set that aside, the service is very good, sound quality is very good on average on my only outages are dsl related. Would I recommend Packet8? YES! Do I still? YES.
UPDATE 7 Feb - Still working very well. Would be great but have noticed an occasional delay in the time a person leaves a voicemail and the time the system reports it as either a broken dial tone or LED on the front panel. This happens about 50% of the time. I still highly recommend them.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------
UPDATE 25 October - Still running well. The clarity is very good although I get occasional dropouts of packets. It's not a big deal as I can usually fill in the blanks or ask the person to repeat what they said. Overall, this is still a good deal for the money. Am still happy with the service.
Packet 8 Rocks! ----------------------------update 2 complete----------------------------------------------
Update 22 Sep - Advice. Don't restart the adaptor without good reason as your personal setting wil go bye-bye. I learned this the hard way when I was informed that my voice mail wasn't picking up after a reset. I checked my settings online and sure enough, voicemail was turned off. Also, when your internet connection drops, it will take a short period of time for your adaptor to reconnect to the service. I think mine took 30 minutes the last time it happened.
Anyway, for the most part, this service is really cool and works very well. I have recommended it to quite a few people and I warn them that support takes a while via e-mail... ------------------------------update complete---------------------------------
Being overseas it's very hard to get hold of US based merchants to do business. This service was mentioned to me after I winned about a $400 dollar phone bill early this summer. I ordered the service via referral and after receiving my adaptor Friday, I was VERY happy. Setup was nothing more than plugging the power adaptor into the outlet, lan cable between router and adaptor and then the phone. I called the number to activate the service, punched in my unique code and was greeted with: "your service is now active. You can hang up and make calls".
Talk about stoked! I immediately called my fiance and was impressed with the clarity. I understand that each firmware upgrade makes it even better so in my opinion, look out baby bells, VoIP rocks.

Walked into a TigerDirect store in November, walked out with the DTA. Activated it online, and it was fully operational in less than 5 min. I am very impressed with the sound quality. People have complained about a few outages recently, but I have been unaffected and did not notice any.
The only feature that I would like is email delivery of voice mail.
Overall, I am very impressed with the service.
--Update (2/15/06) -- I have had service for over a year now. This past Dec. I ported my home phone number over to P8. The port was done in 2 weeks. Service is still outstanding. Call quality is good.
--Update (3/9/08) -- Well, over two years since my last review. Price has gone up a couple bucks, but I am still using it. Call quality is still outstanding. I have switch my ISP back to Comcast (from AT&T DSL), and the quality remains consistent.

Bought Packet8 based on a recommendation. Service has been solid, but I am not sure that you truly get what you pay for. I'm paying $85 for 2 lines and voicemail for my business.
Also, I needed to change a number to a fax line and it was a somewhat painful process... They wanted me to spend $ and buy another line rather than convert.
