    My Other Reviews·Packet8
Been a customer of Packet8 for nearly 4 years now. Been a residential and business customer. Service and support is outstanding...best in the industry and probably even the best in many tech industries.

The price is right, the product is rock solid, and the features cannot be beat.

The LNP (telephone number transfer) support team was terrible. It took me about 9 months to get my 3 numbers ported to Packet8, and to no fault of my own I might add. It was impossible to get status responses from that LNP. Using the "Case Tool" is useless - they barely respond and/or use it. The client web site to manage your account is terrible. Did anybody spend any time to do any usability testing?

Now that we have the service is in place, it works fine of the moment but what a hellish 9 months. I hope I don't have another problem.

I own Insurance Plus Agencies, LLC, a 7 location insurance agency in Houston, TX. I got the idea of using VOIP in about 2001. We had 4 locations at the time and was looking for ways to lower our phone bills and have employees communicate more effectively. I bought a $35,000 VOIP telephony computer that used the H323 protocol. Needless to say it did not work as advertised. We used it as a stand alone PBX at our main location until I was contacted by a Packet8 sales representative in April, 2007.

I did my homework researching Packet8 and other VOIP companies. Being weary of VOIP after my initial experience I decided to try 3 phones in 3 different locations. We used them every chance we had. They worked great! I then ordered the additional 10 phones and started porting our numbers over to Packet8.

We now have approximately 20 phones and 10 virtual numbers. Packet8 allows Insurance Plus Agencies to act as one office. No matter where an agent is working customers can be transferred to them. If a customer needs to speak directly to the Insurance Company we can transfer them there. (Ever call the Home Depot main office and ask to speak to the location nearest you? They'll tell you to hang up and call that location.) When a customer needs an insurance quote and we're all busy at one location I can transfer them to an agent that is not busy. (I no longer have to risk losing the sale or give bad customer service because I'm already helping a client.) And I haven't even mentioned the auto attendant, on-hold message, virtual extensions and the way we are now providing 24/7 sales and customer service.

Bottom line? Insurance Plus Agencies now has a state of the art multi location phone system at half the price of what we were paying for AT&T with more functionality than a $35,000 PBX.

    Thanks Packet8!

Packet8's overall service is GREAT! If you're looking to take your business to the next level, making a home into a real office setting, or an office into a functioning office. This is the way to go. One of their better features is that every voice mail can be sent to your email. I especially like being able to transfer voice mails this way, with the option to do it from the phone itself too. From time to time we have had issues with calls getting dropped. Tech support is always quick, very knowledgeable, and extremely helpful.

I like the service a lot and the free phone is wonderful. What I don't like is the government getting their hands in all over VoIP with their taxes. I wish the government would stay out of the way of the internet and go after the big corporations that feed us nonsense controlling our rights and freedoms since 1913 when the FED took over. JFK was right, these secret societies must be exposed as the traitors they are.

It's not Packet8's fault for the regulatory taxes, it's the peoples fault for having let criminals take over our country back in the day and it continues today because the sheep "baabaaa" on.

Install was quick and easy. Ordered 8/20/03 DTA shipped 8/21.Took 5-7 days to get the DTA cross-country to Georgia. Only install issue was cycling the DTA after router, modem, or hub is restarted. Without the DTA being the last thing restarted, you get a fast busy.

My network/voip system: started w/Bellsouth DSL (1500/284), now using Comcast (3000/284) dynamic IP's. Network/voip equipment: cable modem (RCA DM315), router (Linksys BSFR11 w/NAT), hub (Net Gear 108 - 8port), ZoneAlarm firewall and Grisoft anti-virus for all 5 computers.

I use e-Fax so fax isn't an issue. Their free service converts and e-mails faxes as *.tif attachment. (Now using K7.com)

Service has been "acceptable to very good," except when firmware upgrades are released. Quality has consistently dropped until the new firmware is updated. Currently using firmware ver. 1229. Since ver.1228/1229 quality has been great except for the audio dropouts, which are reported here on BBR to be fixed, today. Hooray!

Lack of LNP or virtual numbers have kept me from dropping my POTS. With a daughter in OK and parents in NC, P8 has saved me enough to cover the cost of the service. I now have a 2nd line throughout the house. I use an Oklahoma number so my daughter never has to make long distance calls.

I have P8 checking for portability with my Bellsouth number and when/if available will probably ditch the BS service, saving approx. $45/mon.

I've personally never experienced the "system down" issues reported on BBR. Have had voice mail unavailable a couple of times, but not the end of the world.

It's been given me a "great bang for the buck."

If the voice dropouts are gone and we get LNP or virtual numbers, I'm "happy as a clam," whatever that means.

7/18/06 They now do have LNP, virtual numbers, plus out going caller ID with name. I 've been very please overall with P8.

That said, they are stating to nickel & dime users like the teleco's. $19.95/mo. now is really $23.48. We are being force feed e911 & associated costs.

I recently LNP'd a number to a second line.(I bought a used BPA-410 off ebay to add a second line). The port went well if not rather slow. Now, I discover that P8 assigned my old number (from before the LNP) to a new user & I'm being billed for the charges made by the new owner of my old P8 number. So far the charges are up to approx $58 dollars.

I reported problem Saturday & pursued today, explaining in detail what was going on. They are "escalating the problem" to see if this is a "glitch" in their software.

"If I'm due a credit" P8 will let me know via e-mail in 24-48 hours.

Trying to get this resolved was a real cluster ---k. They use a third party for customer service and NOTHING happens until you get the attention of someone at the top of the food chain at P8.

Finally got the billing issues resolved after leaving a V/M for CEO of P8.

Monthly costs have climbed to a MaBell like $28.03 per month from a starting price of $19.95 with no other fees. (That's a 50% increase since starting to use P8 service.)

I'm starting the migration in the direction of other alternatives such as MajicJack. I still use ViaTalk in addition to P8 but they likewise are starting to "nickel and dime" me to death.

I am another Sunrocket refugee. Very happy with SR. It just worked and may have gone out of business because they could never get it right in the billing department. I had to beg them to take my money. P8 uses very little bandwidth which is a good thing but doesn't support faxing on their regular line. Another feature that I got real fond of with SR was email notice to my cell phone when I had a new VM. P8 allows you to put the email address in but out of numerous VM left I have only received one text message that a new VM was left. Contacted P8 and get many different responses from it should work to well if you didn't get a message we must not support that. On another note I contacted them about dialing out and getting nothing but dead air (mostly) or "I'm sorry we are unable to complete your call at this time". They only want me to reboot my whole system. This seems to happen at peak times of the day like right after the kids get out of school. Sounds to me to be a overload on a system. Calling them is a waste of time because you sit on hold for over 20 minutes. I end up giving up and opening a ticket on their web site that usually takes at least a day to get a response. I am seriously considering going to voicepulse because at this moment it has the best overall rating.

If you don't get your issues straightened up with Packet8, Voicepulse would be a good choice to try. I have had them over three years and it just works. The voicemail system does notfications via email (works reliably) and can be set up to send the message itself as a sound file attachment to your email if you wish.

    even more issues with P8

I got my number ported to VoicePulse and went to cancel with P8 and they want me to pay a cancellation fee of $60. I explained that it was because of their poor Customer service that I was canceling and they tell me it is just their policy. That it was stated in their terms and conditions. I actually read the terms and conditions and never saw that even though I was on a month to month plan I had actually signed up for 12 months of service. Buyer beware! This is why they are stating that they can just charge me with it. I asked to speak to a supervisor and or get a supervisor name, email, or even phone number and they state "that is not in their policy to give that out". I insist to speak to a supervisor and they put me and hold for about 10 minutes the first time and come back and tell me there is not one available. The second time after ten minutes I just get hung up on. I tried going through their corporate number and the first time I actually got an operator who sent me to VM. The next times I just go into an endless loop of press 1 for CS 2 for etc. I then tried going in through their business support and immediately get a live person who says it is their policy to not give out supervisor's names. He transfers me to Customers Support who again puts me on hold and then hangs up after 10 minutes. Does anyone know how to contact someone up the chain at P8? If I don't get any satisfaction soon I will put a hold on all charges from them on my credit card.
