Wave Broadband bought Starstream Communications of Placer County, California in 2006. I was a Starstream Cable TV customer for 12 years prior. I have been grandfathered into an 8MBPS download speed for 28.95 per month (discounted $10.00 because I also have their cable TV service). It is used for Netflix streaming and works fantastic. I get DVD quality streaming movies over my internet connection.

I have had excellent technical service, never wait more than 2-3 minutes on the phone. They have helped me with issues that ended up being related to the router or computer which are not their equipment. The techs are generally friendly and seem to know what they are doing and my issues have been fixed quickly. They offer weekend tech service to the home and limit appointments to a 4 hour window. I have needed service on a few occasions and they were out in 2-3 days both times.

I use 2 cable cards from Wave Broadband in my TiVoHD and they work fantastic. My total bill for HDTV cable package, cable modem, 2 cable cards and internet is $105.00 a month.

    Update 11.21.2009:

The past 2 months I have been experiencing extreme slow downs of speed in the evenings. Rumors are around that Wave is capping daily downloads to 3 GB. Once you hit the cap, they throttle your speed to 1.5m until 11:25pm that day. I asked the tech and he assured me that is not true.

I had a tech out today because of the intermittent 10-500 kbps speeds I am getting. He replaced some connectors outside the building. Time will tell if that helps.

    My Other Reviews·Foresthill Telepho..
It appears to be a good company and it is stable. It has its quirks like anything else.

Upgraded to 18000 Mbps. The down load speed gets close but not very close?

Just did a speed test, 13000Mbps. Not to close to 18000 as advertised.

I've had Wave Cable since early '04 when they took over for Charter communications. We have zero other options for high speed, as the COs for DSL are a ways away. During the initial takeover and a few times since then, Wave has had terrible outages, but nothing that they usually had any control over.

All in all, I'm fairly happy with Wave.

Edit 3/26/08 1:27 PM: Still have Wave. I don't use their e-mail or NNTP servers, so I can't speak for their availability and speed. However, the internet service is still very solid. I get slow downs sometimes in the evenings, but nothing major and it still gets at least 350KB/s at those times.

Edit: 4/2/09 10:24PM: Wave still isn't great. They're rolling out a 18/2 package that'll have caps... caps on the lower tiers will come later. Joy.

I lived in an area of Auburn, CA that was too far for traditional DSL service.

We first had SDSL with Wizwire »www.wizwire.com/ (a great local firm I recommend) then Nor Cal Broadband »www.ncbb.net (another local firm I recommend) brought a Motorola Canopy based system to our sub-division -- Grand Oak(s) .

When Auburn kicked out the useless cable company we had the new provider "Starstream" (old name) came in they delivered on digital cable fed by optics like they promised ahead of plan!

When they came to sell service door to door, I invited the sales dude in, offered them coffee and asked where to sign . I was the first customer turned up and only took the IP service and not cable TV (happy Dish Network customer).

We had one outage unplanned and one they gave notice on in the time I had them.

Vonage worked great over their service.

The Motorola cable modem ran very hot in my IT closet but survived!

Speed was 6M/1M (if I recall correctly).

    /dan

P.S. "order to success" time was due to pre-selling before infrastructure was installed.

    My Other Reviews·Sprint Mobile Broa..
With QW DSL service the speeds were up to 7, not bad for a rural area. Found out that a FO line was close by and talked to the techs at Wave when I had my TV install. Went ahead and did the switch 2 days ago and it's a lot faster, sometime double (14/1) and lower latency as well-even during the peak times I still get a solid 9/1 connection.

    1/24/09

Opted for the higher broadband speed, so far it's working as described with tops from 13 to 17. Uploads 1.5 to 2.2-a;; tests are done via wireless (Airport) so I still have to try it from the modem sometime to see the difference.

You do get some slowdown during peak hours but nothing noticeable on my end.

There are no other comparable options for broadband in my area, so they were it.

They offer a number of tiers and I took the second from the top called "Power User" which claims up to 10 mbs. I see about 8 mbs best case to the local area. More often I sit around 6 mbs. I think they may be a little over-sold for their capacity, but it hasn't impacted me in any terrible way.

The local office is friendly as are the techs (typical Washington friendliness). I've never had an unpleasant experience from anyone on the phone, at the office or in a truck.

The only interesting experience was installing cable cards (in a Tivo) which requires both a truck roll and a $20 fee, but even that was pretty painless and not broadband related.

In general, they act like a local merchant trying to satisfy a customer, which they do.

Ordered the Power User package, 10/1.5 mbit speeds @ around $55. Installation was a breeze. Service tech was very polite and friendly, although he seemed a little rushed. Probably had a lot of installs to do that day. Wavecable provides a Motorola SB5120 modem, which is a step up from my old SB4100 from Time Warner.

The only issues I had with the service currently, was it took 24 hours for the 10 mbit speeds to kick in. Speed tests were coming up at the lower 6mbit tier. And no information was provided to me upon installation, say about email addresses, no software frills, etc.

Basically, Wave provides the net pipe, and they do decently enough at that. Good enough for me.

Recently relocated from Port Orchard to Sequim, WA. From Wave to Wave. Decided to upgrade to the Power User Plus package, with 10mb down / 1.5mb up. it's awesome!

The transfer / upgrade couldn't have been easier, and was only $20. The installer was knowledgeable and friendly. And he was even ON TIME. Even insisted on wearing the little booties when I told him not to bother.

He was in and out in under an hour, and I've been enjoying my 10mb connection for a couple weeks now.

To have service this fast this far out in the sticks is sweet. Thanks Wave!

Just dropped my Speakeasy DSL of two years, as I got tired of paying $125 a month for 6/768 service. Decided to try Wave at the 8/1.5 for $55 a month.

So far the service has been reliable, with low latency an no real slowdowns. Service does get a bit laggy at prime time, but nothing that effects games or surfing. Service did go down one time at 1am, but I should have been in bed . Came back up within 5 mins.

Installation was a bad experience (again). I waited the 4 hour window and no one showed up. I called their customer service and was told to call in another 30 mins if no one showed. Called back and they said I wasn't on their daily call sheet. The local office called me and said that someone would come out. I got a call within 10 mins and the installer said he would be right there. 5 mins later I get a call from the original tech that was supposed to install, and I told him someone was already on the way. He was quite surprised and laughed at me on the phone. The first tech showed up and was very nice and apologized for the other installers lack of communication.

Overall the service is great, just wish they could get their install department fixed.

Well going from rather horrible DSL with another provider around here...which gave me 1.5mbps D and 386 U.....for $60 a month, to what I have now.....well i'm not surprised how much I love Wave and the service I am getting from them.

I will say this though, if your not a very technical person...opt in for the professional installation...not that it was hard or anything to do but the first connection process was confusing with the lights and what the order they booted up in meant. Setup is very easy, troubleshooting though is not.

When it was having trouble connecting the other day, I called up the 24 HOUR tech support and they were kind and courteous, didn't treat me like i was an idiot...but they really didn't ask me too much as to my problem...told them the internet was not connecting, they asked if i had reset the modem and i had (many times) and that did not resolve it...tech will be out tomrrow (?) thankfully the connection "fixed" itself so I cancelled the tech guys coming out to my house. They told me they would make note of the error and if I were to get it again to call right away.

So I am very glad I got rid of my old DSL and got Wave...I'm never looking back.

I will update this when i can figure out the flakiness of the connection...might be a fluke, or something with my area only.
