I remember the days of the early Internet in MA and the small companies that offered service not just a product. I long those days. I had started signing up for Lingo on Monday morning when I stumbled on a bunch of awful reviews about their customer service. I decided to take a minute and give a call to GalaxyVoice, which I had heard offered a similar service and were local.
The person that answered the phone though not a salesman convinced me not by a lame sales pitch but by spending 45 minutes on the phone with me explaining the process, the technology, etc. 45 minutes!!! I signed up and by Wednesday, my account was set-up. I was given the option of using a softphone and by Thursday I received my adapter. I literally plugged it into my phone and router and that was it. I called France and the quality was like next room. I have a hard time believing this. Only problem so far, was logging in to our voicemail through our home phone. Two quick calls to tech support and this only problem is gone. I hope this is not another Netflix with great service during the trial period and then sloppy performance afterwards. Right now, I would not change if you paid me... (well, how much are we talking?)
11/06/05 Still happy with GalaxyVoice but I notice that the sound quality is always stellar when calling France or Oregon but tends to be average when calling locally. Doesn't make much sense but that's what I have noticed.
3/25/06 No complaints with GalaxyVoice so we finally decided to port our wired land number over to their service and as of next week, all wired service will be a thing of the past.
09/16/06 Still outstanding quality but the Caller ID feature has not been working for about two months and technical support said they are still trying to resolve the issue. The caller ID feature displays just the number and in most cases just states "Unknown"
12/06/06 Caller ID still broken. rest is the same.
01/10/07 Moved to a new home about 15 miles away. Didn't have to do a thing in terms of moving my phone service with me. Same number, just plugged in the Sipura adapter into the new cable modem outlet and that was that. Quality is still excellent in the new location. One thing to remember is to update your 911 information on their website.
4/04/07 Got new wireless phone service from Verizon and two new numbers. At first we were unable to connect the call from our VoIP phone to either cell phone. Took tech support about ten days to clear the problem and they kept us updated all along. All is well now.
05/20/07 Caller ID problem has finally been fixed!!!
09/22/07 Still loving it!
11/06/07 Upgraded to a new computer and found out that Internet Explorer is no longer supported or available for Mac. Despite using Firefox as my main browser, IE was the only browser that played my galaxyvoice voicemails flawlessly. Firefox and Safari both have issues with it. However I found that cutting and pasting the link to your wav file from Firefox into Quicktime Player works very well. It's an extra step but easier and less cumbersome than having an obsolete browser installed on my new machine.

| update 12/13/05 Still sticking with GalaxyVoice. Some little problems now and then. Yesterday, the phone stopped ringing and directly went to voicemail. Powering down the Sirupa adapter and cable modem seemed to clear the problem. On average, we get disconnected once or twice a week when in the middle of a phone call. Quality is still better when calling France then it is when calling around the block. | |

"Free incoming plan for NY/MA/NH/RI, call quality is good, support is good"

On October 13, 2005, I signed up with GalaxyVoice as a backup after getting frustrated with SunRocket's many outages.
They have a Free VoIP plan for people in NY, MA, NH and RI, so the price couldn't be beat. There is no monthly charge and the plan includes 60 minutes of outgoing calls to the US per month (Toll-free numbers are also free and don't seem to impact the free 60 minutes). Anything over 60 is billed at 2.3 cents a minute (US and some international destinations). Their international rates seem reasonable. All incoming calls are free. There is a $24.95 activation fee and I'm using my own Sipura SPA-1001. If you don't BYOD (bring your own device), you can purchase a VoIP phone or adapter for $69.95 (including shipping).
It took 3 days to receive my account information. I received the information on a Saturday and e-mailed their support that day for configuration information for my SPA-1001. I received a response within 24 hours. I haven't had to telephone their support yet, so I can't comment on that.
I was up and running pretty quickly and all seemed to work fine. I didn't use the service much for the first few months. I've just recently started using it more since I'm looking for new work and didn't want to give my home number out. Call quality has been excellent, except for an echo of myself that I can hear for the first few seconds of the call.
As others have said, the web portal is in need of a makeover but it is completely functional... except for the billing. Strangely enough, my credit card gets charged for less than it says on the online bill.
I'm currently waiting for my phone number to ported from SunRocket to another provider (QuantumVoice). However, they have been having trouble getting SunRocket to release my number (previously ported from Verizon). If they fail again, I may consider making GalaxyVoice my primary provider.
The only feature that is missing for me is outbound caller ID with name.
I will adjust my ratings as I use the service more.
2/2/2006:
The incoming caller ID with name seems to be broken. I've e-mailed their support and they responded that it is being worked on.
3/20/2006:
Caller ID with name is working again. No complaints about service. Everything has been excellent.
5/27/2006:
I decided to switch my primary home line (on QuantumVoice) over to GalaxyVoice. They allowed me to sign up for a second FreeVoIP plan ($24.95 activation fee) so that I could keep my second line. It took them a couple days to set up the additional account. My new account was set up on 5/5. I configured it on one of my Sipuras and made some test calls (everything worked fine). The same day I faxed them the LNP request. On 5/18 I received an e-mail that my number would be ported over on 5/25. Everything went as planned with no noticable interruption.
When they port an outside number over, they add it as "Remote Virtual Number". They keep your original number with them as the primary number. However, they have an option in their control panel that allows you to set an alternate caller ID number so that outbound calls can be set to any number on your account. The only other issue I found was with voicemail. To retrieve voicemail from outside of your house you need to dial a voicemail access number. When entering your mailbox number you need to enter the original number and not the ported number. Not a big deal, but you have to remember to enter that number. Overall, I'm very happy with GalaxyVoice/RNK. The call quality seems better than QuantumVoice and the price is right.
9/23/2007:
Still satisfied with service. Inbound Caller ID with Name is working again. They fixed it sometime earlier in the year. My biggest problem in the past was some calls not ringing through or ringing once and going to voicemail. I found a conflict with the QOS settings on my router and the usage of a STUN server on the VoIP adapter. You can use one or the other but not both. Once I adjusted the settings, no problems. I rarely go over the 60 free outbound minutes since we use cell phones to talk among the family. My monthly bill is about $2.35 in fees and taxes. The only thing that seems to be missing with this service is the outbound name on Caller ID (there isn't any).

"Excellent call quality and reliability, good personal service, good price"
"online bills don't reflect actual billing, unlimited calling plan has limits"
"Great service, quality and reliability with a few amateurish glitches and misleading advertisement"

I've had this service for a month now and can report the following:
1. Very easy to set up. I had a few problems because I had my own hardware (I'm a total ignoramus with VOIP btw), but I received immediate help when I called tech support.
2. Tech support answers the phone in 2-3 rings with a REAL person. They're very friendly, quite competent and helpful. After Lingo's apalling service, this feels envigorating.
3. Had a small glitch with double ringing signals but received advice on this board that immediately solved that. The problem in no way affected call quality or reliability though.
4. Call quality: I'd rate it 8.5/10 simply because I've experienced twice that there is a very slight distortion in the voice. I've so far talked for 1200+ minutes and this has happened twice. I hung up and dialled again and it was fine. I use it for calls in the U.S., to Europe (Sweden, U.K., germany) and Taiwan/Hong Kong and works very well.
5. Unlike Lingo, there has been no downtime at all. So far, excellent reliability - especially compared to Lingo which was often would require that I reset the box after downtime.
6. You can use a softphone too which is great for travel
7. No year-long contracts, although if you cancel within 6 months it will cost you $25 - very reasonable in this industry.
8. Their online billing does not work well. The bill does not reflect the actual bill! I called about this and was told that I just need to add up the minutes to know what the bill will be and that they are working on a solution...hmmm. Very amateurish in my opinion. my first bill for example, had $20 as a setup fee and 9.95 shipping and handling when in fact I didn't buy an ATA from them. It should be 24.95 setup fee. they assured me that the charge would be accurate, but we'll see.
9. Their webpanel is really ugly and rudimentary and is in desperate need of an interface upgrade!
10. Their unlimited plan is not as unlimited as it seems. Read their user agreement carefully and ask them questions. I was told that although it says in the agreement that there is a cap for unlimited calls, 2500mins on consecutive months, that "..there are a lot of users who go over that and are not charged..." That's not very reassuring and I hope that there will be change here so that unlimited really means unlimited. Having said that, it appears that most VOIP providers do the same thing, except don't disclose what the limit is, except for saying that they reserve the right to cut you off or charge you if your calling habits don't 'fall within what is reasonable for a residential number'. That's ridiculous. Hope people complain more about this misleading advertisement - perhaps to the BBB...
Summary: I'm very happy with this service in most ways. It works perfectly, call quality is good, it's reliable and you get to talk to a real person quickly when you call customer service/tech support. The unlimited plan is very affordable but time will tell if there is a problem with their limited unlimited policy. If there is, I will immediately discontinue the service as I feel that it's a matter of principle not to call something unlimited unless it is truly unlimited. Besides that caveat, I highly recommend galaxyvoice.
Update, October 17, 2005:
Today I had my first bad experience. I tried to call a friend in Germany and kep getting a message that the call could not go through. Finally, when I got through, the call quality deteriorated beyond acceptable and when I tried to call back I got the message again. I was also told by a friend on the west coast that my voice cut in and out a little. I will monitor this and update accordingly. I hope it's just a one-time occurence. Other than this, the service has continued to be excellent.
Update, November 21, 2005:
I got rid of my old cordless phone and replaced it with a new panasonic 5.8ghz and feel that the quality of my calls has improved further. I also no longer have any problems calling Germany, though I doubt that has anything to do with the phone itself. All in all, the line is stable, call quality is excellent and there have been no outages. Their online usage and billing is still completely wrong and can't be relied on for anything, but I have found that at the end of the month the bill I get is accurate and reliable. My main wish would be for galaxyvoice to make an effort to completely revamp their web portal as it is is about 15 years behind the times! Seriously, it's terribly bad and needs a site doctor badly.
Update, December 21, 2005:
Had some problems this week with incoming calls not going through or disconnecting. A few times people got a mesage that our number was not a working number. Call quality seemed worse than usual too. I called support and, as usual, got a real person within a minute or two who was very courteous and professional. We did some troubleshooting while I was on my cell phone and he made some adjustments at his end and then called me on my voip line to test it. We thought we solved the problem, but after I hung up the phone started acting up again so I called back. Same positive experience again: got a real person within a minute who tried to transfer me to the first guy. When the first guy's line was busy he came back and offered to help me instead. He fixed the problem in about 10 minutes and then told me that he'd be there until 9 in case something happened again. The phone works perfectly again and I didn't need to call back. It's really wonderful to actually know that there are people at the other end who are willing to help and who seem genuinely interested in solving the problem instead of just passing ther buck. It's unusual. Galaxvoice is not perfect by any means, but I continue to feel that they offer a very reliable, good quality service at a great price. The remaining issues I have are: website interface, online billing information inaccurate (although the bills are correct) and sometimes their silence suppression cuts out wanted sounds when they're very low volume.
February 14: For a few hours the other day, calls wouldn't go through to numbers in Europe. Other than than, extremely happy with the service still. I feel it's a true bargain in today's market.
March 17, 2006: no problems whatsoever with any calls or service outages. Everything working perfectly still. Happy.
June 5, 2006: Everything working perfectly, No outages, excellent call quality on all calls domestically and to to Europe. Still happy and actually quite impressed with the consistently good service. Very reliable.
Update, OCtober 11, 2006: the service continued to be excellent. However, the company that supplies the VOIP service for galaxyvoice started offering a feature that allows you to call a number from your cell phone and access your home voip line for free calling out. Since I'm often away from my home phone this is is a great service. I asked galaxyvoice when they would offer the same service and they had no plans to and could not say. I feel that galaxyvoice is excellent but it doesn't seem interested in competing or trying to add new services - it just is what it is. I switched to www.revos.com (the voip provider for galaxyvoice) and am even happier! It's the same service but directly from the mothership. this means that you pay a little more, but get even better service. Voice quality is the same. I also kept a number with galaxyvoice just for the sake of it and since it doesn't cost more than a few dollars/month. I have the dial-in service and use it all the time for calls when I'm not at home. Couldn't be happier!

"Good quality, great support, great price in certain states"
"a few technical issues, website inaccurate sometimes but does the job"
"a no brainer if free option works for you, otherwise still worth serious consideration"

I set up Galaxy Voice about a month ago. So far I am pretty pleased. I have the free package (yes, free! other than the initial charge for an adpater) for residents of certain New England states. Also, there's a small monthly charge to cover federal fees, but only around a buck or two.
Setup was a snap. It was literally just plug and go.
The voice quality is pretty good, but frankly this is a minimal backup line for me. Its just there for people to reach me or in case my cell phone ever breaks or service goes down. Also, I needed it to support my DirecTV box call-ins (more on that in a minute).
I had a small issue at first where I could not access my voicemail. One of their techs solved it for me, although it did take two calls (I have a hunch the first person I got was new).
I have also had another small issue when I try to forward the line to my cell phone. It ends up at the voicemail of my VoIP line instead of my cell phone voicemail - even though the cell phone does ring. That isn't actually a problem, but its just odd.
Finally, I was having problems with the data calls that my DirecTV receiver needs to do just once per month. I have a good conversation with some smart techs and eventually they pointed out that my DSL line had significant packet loss, which I confirmed via an online test.
When my box did its regular monthly call at 3:30 am, however, the traffic was apparently much less, so my DSL was more reliable, and it worked! (as confirmed by DirecTV) So the problem is definitely with my DSL during afternoon/evening hours. I continue to work with them on that.
Overall, the variety of small issues (voicemail, forwarding... oh, and an occassional echo) makes me rate the reliability at '3'. However, if this is an occassional line for you, or you're not incredibly picky about these things, the price can't be beat!
Also, the customer service has been excellent. Most of the techs I've spoken with have really known their stuff. They put big companies to shame. And they'll even look into it and call back. I had to give them a '5' on that.
Last comment of a technical nature, the website is pretty basic, but the call log is updated near instantaneously and the features section lets you turn things on and off. It works for what it needs to do, but if you see something that doesn't look right (like your bill billing you for certain calls), chances are its only because the website doesn't know what its talking about.
Overall, distinctly recommended if you need something to replace that ridiculously expensive landline. Its a great value for the money (even if you can't get the free plan) as they offer a ton of features. I gave the price a '4' because I know the free option is limited in availability.
Oh, one last thing. Incoming calls, toll free calls, and even call forwarding doesn't count against your minutes. Thats not the case for most VoIP providers, and may be very important to some people.

I've just signed up with GalaxyVoice, using their Sipura SPA box. I was unable to fix the silence suppression which makes calls distorted, especially if in low volume instances. Their support is quick, answering the phone, but so far they have not been able to fix the problem. I also tried to send fax with their service - it didn't work, while I send faxes with Lingo (connected in parallel) all the time and they work.
UPDATE: They remove silence suppression,
I did a number of tests and I am confident that my internet connection is fine. Lots of bandwidth (6Mbs/.5Mbs) and 0% packet loss.
I wanted to switch from Lingo because of free calls to Russia, CID Name and E911, but that plan is on hold for now. I might just use their free plan as a backup to Lingo service until they resolve their problems.
Update: 9/26/05 Quality is much better now, and the voice mail issues I had seem to be resolved. I am still unable to send faxes...
Update 10/04/05 The incoming silence suppression is still not fixed - as the result the quality is of voice is bad. Received a bill online with incorrect information. The support told me to disregard that bill and wait for an email with charges. Unfortunately still not ready to switch from Lingo.
Update 10/05/05 GalaxyVoice officially said that they can't fix the Silence Suppression problem, so I am on my own. I will keep the free account as a backup to Lingo.
Update 10/18/05: The rnkvoip customer support (the actual service provider) is looking at the problem. They claim that only a couple of users complained about it. Their engineering says that this is done to keep the conversation alive - I am not sure they're right - since other providers don't do silence suppression - it could be a workaround for some bug or configuration issue? So far they have not been able to turn it off - they say it is done server wide - but they're still looking at it...
Update 10/19/2005: RNKVOIP refuses to turn off VAD (Voice activation detection) also known as Silence suppression... Those of you who want a POTS quality will not be happy...
Update 11/21/2005: Decided to switch to GalaxyVoice as a primary line. VAD being on is the only downside - otherwise the service is pretty good so far. The quality of calls in us is excellent. Calls to many countries including Israel and Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg) are included as well. I can hear an echo, when calling Israel, otherwise the quality is decent.
Update 1/26/2006: For the past week or two caller id with name stopped working. When I called Galaxyvoice, they were not aware of the problem. I then called RNKVOIP (parent company Galaxy buys VOIP service from) and they confirmed that latest upgrade did screw this up. They promised to fix it within a week or two - still waiting for a fix.
Update 2/11/2006: Caller id with name still not fixed. Silence suppression is no longer on, which improved the quality a great deal.

I had tried many VOIP services for years (I am talking about dialpad's free phone service that you had to click an advertisment every 30 seconds) and was looking for a VOIP voicemail account only (and cheap). I didn't want a phone number from Utah (although there is nothing wrong with Utah). I am from MA. I stumbled into this and figured for $24.95 I would give it a try.
I have a local phone number in MA and have the voicemail set up to email me any messages as they come in. I am using the free XTEN softphone. I get 60 miutes of free outgoing calls.
Call are clean and crisp. I use it pretty much as a home office phone number without a phonebook listing, without telemarketers and without a $38+ charge from my local telco.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Galaxy Voice.
