Value for money:

I tried DeltaThree’s “IConnectHere” service. I was initially attracted to the ability to use my own device (ATA186). I was able to get it up and running quickly after establishing my account. It worked okay but support for a low bit rate CODEC would have been nice. I was originally looking for a second line to back-up my POTS line. Consequently I selected a basic plan that would bill per minute so that I could experiment with the technology.

However soon after, I started to have some billing and technical problems. One inconvenience was the requirement to add more money into the account if you wanted to change the automated account recharge setting so it would not automatically replenish the account. They wanted me to to add $15 to get to the webpage where I could disable the automatic “feature”. There was no other way to change that option.

IConnectHere has no customer service option other than email. I would promptly get an automated response acknowledging my communication but the real response was several days later (not the 16 to 24 hours they claim on the website). Typically the technical response was a standard response the customer service rep. cut and pasted into the email. On more than one occasion the response didn’t have anything to do with my original question. I would reply and wait another couple of days. When I asked them to change my account to disable automatic, frustrated with the snail mail type response times I decided to cut the service. That’s when they didn’t responds to my emails at all.

Curiously, my credit card statement reported a charge from a company in the UK, not the USA. Their website lists a NYC address but I couldn’t get a phone number for them. I tried calling DeltaThree corporate office but they would not transfer me or help “you must email customer support”. Fortunately American Express came to my rescue and since the charges showed up from the UK they refunded the charges. Unfortunately they could not block future charges but offered to refund future charges once I received my future statements. I sent a foul email to ICH pointing out that my credit card company refunded my charges. That got me my response… and pretty quickly too.

This was my first stab at VoIP. In the end I was glad to move on and switch to Packet8. I have been happy ever since. In all fairness this was in late 2003. They still only offer email support but the member pages may have changed.
