After my free year at Net2Phone, whom I had switched to after SunRocket blew up, I realized that I hardly used my landline phone and needed to switch to a minimum rate plan. Just around that time, Net2Phone moved to a single unlimited plan so it was time to find yet another new provider.
Quantumvoice was highly rated and had a $9.95/250 minute plan that included all taxes and fees which was exactly what I was looking for. My only concern was whether or not I could get my Innomedia device configured with their service and it didn't show up as a supported device. However, I decided to take the plunge and figured I would deal with the BYOD issue if needed.
A day after submitting the order documents, I received all the required setup information. That's when I went about reconfiguring the Innomedia from Net2Phone to QV. Not so easy, as the Net2Phone firmware that they supplied essentially locks you out of all real configuration options. The only solution was to downgrade the firmware. Via a Google search I found old SR firmware .77 and .75 versions and attempted to flash in the .77 revision. No go. All it did was give me an HTTP 404 error. Fine, I'll initiate the flash via a Telnet connection. Nope - Net2Phone had removed that command.
After much debugging, I realized the device just simply did not like the .77 firmware. It was bombing out on what looked like CRC checks. So I tried the .75 firmware which took - success! Except now, no password I tried worked with the device. Eventually I had to do a hard reset which got me back into business. My thought here is that the Net2Phone configuration file was still active which somehow corrupted the admin password (as even the Net2Phone password didn't work).
OK, now it was time to configure the device. The core configuration was straightforward, i.e., SIP server, account information etc. After rebooting the device I knew I had success when the Run light turned Green. Then came the dialing plan - not straight forward. In fact, I came to discover that the Innomedia box is next to useless for dialing plan configuration.... After putting in the recommended QV dialing plan for a Sipura box I went to do a test call. Nothing but a busy tone, no matter what I dialed. I tested an inbound call and it worked perfectly.
15 minutes later, I still did not have outbound calling working so I decided to call tech support at 11pm on a Wednesday night. Someone quickly answered the phone, immediately confirmed they helped others with an Innomedia box and rather than asking a bunch of "is the cable plugged in" type questions, told me that he was setting up a call trace to verify that the call was being placed via QV. What a joy to have someone recognize that they didn't have an idiot on the phone and immediately start to troubleshoot at a higher level.
Turns out that the call was not getting to QV and both of us agreed it had to be because of the dialing plan. That's when I found out that the Innomedia could only do a very simple dial plan. I deleted all my changes and put back the "standard" dial plan. Tried a test call and success! The tech then told me about a whole bunch of different options that I could tweak should I need to, several of which I hadn't thought of or wouldn't have been able to figure out easily myself. After 15 minutes on the phone with the tech, I had a fully functional phone!
Thanks to the Innomedia, I can't dial *123 for voicemail, but everything else works. Voice quality is better than Net2phone (which was fantastic after SR's voice quality) and the phone has been rock solid. The only issue was that I couldn't disable outbound CallerID, but they fixed that within 24 hours.
As others have mentioned, their phone and billing portals are just plain awful. You can hardly do any feature configurations using the portals and something as simple as looking at how many minutes you have left in your plan (for those not on an unlimited plan) is not possible.
In the end though, at $9.95/mo and 250 minutes of great quality phone service, QV is a bargain and highly recommended.

Update July 7, 2008
Quantumvoice continues to serve me well. I commend them on getting my outgoing Calling ID Name (CNAM) updated so that it shows correctly on our friends Caller-Id displays. I specifically asked them to do this and they followed through. Thus I have upgraded their Tech Support rating. They also promptly and courteously corrected a billing issue that came up because of a number port that I did.
Original review
I set up a "Lite" account (unlimited incoming, 250 minutes outgoing) with Quantumvoice last November as a backup service. This plan costs $9.95 per month and there are no other charges at all. The USF and 911 fees are included in the advertised price. Setup fee for BYOD was $15.
I was having routing issues to my regular provider which was causing serious outbound audio issues. The Quantumvoice servers were much nearer to where I live so I thought it might help. Pings and jitter are much better so the voice quality issues have been alleviated by using a different provider. (My previous provider did work with me to solve the problem but we just couldn't get it done.) I have since ported my primary number to Quantumvoice. I kept the "Lite" plan since we rarely go over 100 outgoing minutes a month anyway.
There have been three occasions to use tech support. The first was do to an error I was getting with phone portal. This was solved promptly. The second was my port request which took 20 calendar days to complete. It was handled accurately and professionally. The third request had to do with annonymous call blocking. One telemarketer seemed to be getting past the system. Tech support verified the problem and thanked me for notifying them. It turned out to be yet another clever way to get around caller-id based call blocking. So far it seems to be fixed.
Quantumvoice seems to be a quality customer-focused company. I recommend them.

One more nice update for quantumvoice.
Always on - What more do you want from a Voip phone always on.
Tech support was great. I did dropped one of my lines so now i only have one. One email did everything so no playing email tag to drop a line.
Bottom line. Im pleased with Quantumvoice. There beta im guessing for there new dashboard went south. But how often do you really sign in on dashboard once a month to pay the bill about it.
29.99 might be high from some but you get what you pay for thats for sure.
11/23/07
Sweet and short update.
Really no problems at all. Always on. Ask tech support something and within about hour you get a email from them.
They have did some updating but i havnt seen the new dashboard yet. Im guessing its still in beta at this time.
Final. Im still very very happy with them and ONE of the FEW and i mean FEW that has TRUE UNLIMITED VOIP with no minute cap.
30 bucks a month tax and everything they are still a good deal to me.
4/6/07-update.
Short and sweet update.
Great company no outages that i can remember.
One big plus is they are now improving there web portal. Slowly and i mean slowly starting to add stuff to the web site. From what i was told they are doing it from ground up. I have emailed them twice and still getting excellent feedback from them. If you call them its the same way. Fast and easy and i have never been on hold like other voip companies out there. (Big Plus)
Bottom line: Im very pleased with them. They might be alittle more $$$ but to me its worth it.
(Also there unlimited plan means unlimited unlike other companies out there. )
************************* Main Post*************************** After viatalk pulled the plug on me i was ready to take a shot at a new company.
Seeing a few reviews of the company and seeing how old they where made me wander if things had changed.
After clearing a few things with there tech support and there TOS making sure on a few things it went very smooth. All email where return within about a HOUR.
One big plus is a can get a LOCAL number in this town i live in. Not too many Voip lines around here. Closes one to me was viatalk sunrocket too and it was 60 miles from me.
Ordered on Friday the 1st and emailed over my service order which was perfect they LISTENED to what i wanted. They told me it could be one week to three weeks for the line. Got a email on wednesday the 6th said the lines where ready to go. Next morning got a email for passwords and numbers. Done.
Set up was on two Pap2-na(BYOD) and was online in less 120 seconds (very fast).
The only bad thing i can say is there web site when you have a account very PLAIN to say the least but i bet they are working on that tho.
Been only up for few days but i will update this in a few months but i would say so far very good.

***LATEST UPDATE - May 14th, 2008***
Well, things have been rock solid for years now. Every time I think about going with a lower priced provider I realize that none of them can match QV's reliability and quality for me. The supposed "major site redo" hasn't materialized and I lowered the rating on that. It was kind of accounting for minor improvements with an eye towards the major one to come. It never did. Other than that I'm very happy with it. If I didn't tell people (aside from the toll free number!) they wouldn't know I used VoIP.
***END OF LATEST UPDATE***
**UPDATE - November 23, 2006**
About a week or so ago Digital Realm took over QV. One of the guys at Digital Realm used to be one of the original guys at QV. This recent change means only good things for QV. The support is already improving and they brought back plans that were dropped prior to them taking over. They've demonstrated directly to me, their desire to get back to where they once were and I believe they will.
Almost instantly they added Caller ID with Name and updated their site. The portal redo is slated to be done soon, I'll update when that happens.
**End of UPDATE**
**UPDATE - November 5, 2006**
QuantumVoice has fallen from grace quite a bit lately. Some customers on here have expressed dissatisfaction with their customer service and call quality. I will admit that their support can be slow but I haven't had to use it much. As far as quality goes, I have experienced no issues with it. It works when I need to make calls and calls ring through just fine.
Early on I was pushing QV and recommending them to everyone I knew. I still do recommend the toll free plan I have, but not their typical non-toll free plans. I only have experience with the toll free number plan so that's all I can speak for. If you're looking for ultra-cheap VoIP without a toll free number I'd recommend ViaTalk or any of the other top providers.
It works for me but apparently not too many others on Broadband Reports, My results are not typical.
**End of UPDATE**
**UPDATE - April 26, 2006 **
They lowered their price from $42 to $40 and added call treatment features. I can now take a call from a given number and automatically forward it to any other given number. This is a very nice feature if I want calls from my work to go to my cell phone when I'm out. Not to mention I put in numbers of people who I do not want to reach me and forward them to the Rejection Hotline.
I am already QV's biggest pimp on DSLR. With two years of reliable service, lower prices and more features I can't recommend them more. You will not find a service out there that offers what QV offers. All those that choose the bargain services can have their poor support and one or two local numbers. I'll take my unlimited toll free number any day.
** End of UPDATE - 4/26/06 ** **UPDATE**
Changed "website" to 5 stars because of the addition of incoming calls to the call logs and because new features are on the way.
Also changed "call quality" and "reliability" to 5 stars because both have proven to be much better over time than they were after initial issues.
**UPDATE**
After having had this company's service for a few months everything is going great. I am a very picky and demanding user so I've nitpicked more than most. They've accommodated me in every way and service is working great. They've allowed me to upgrade to SPA-2000 firmware version 2.0.9 from 1.x. It has worked very well.
You may not have ever heard of them, but they are a very good company. Their parent company is Advanced Media Services ( »www.ams-llc.com ) and their site is »QuQuantumVoiceom as you mamay'veeen able to guess. They are a small company, no doubt, but don't let that fool you. They have given me excellent customer service from PrPrerder to now. I called them before ordering and they answered all of my questions.
Here is an explanation of each rating:
Website - 5 out of 5 stars: Their portal now shows incoming and outgoing calls. There are missed calls and the ability to check voicemail and it does stop the stutter tone when checked through the portal. Overall the portal is not nearly as robust as most providers, but it does the job. They will be adding more features (call hunt, call filters) and giving the portal a new look soon.
Ease of Installation - 5 out of 5 stars: The Sipura SPA-2000 was very plug and play. I consider myself a little more advanced than the average user and they've given me control of some settings. I like that they did that even though they didn't have to.
Call Quality - 5 out of 5 stars: In the beginning I did experience some issues (one way audio, DTMF tones, etc..) but they worked hard to fix any issues immediately. I would explain the problem, and they would know how to go about fixing it. They'd contact me and tell me to power cycle my SPA and it would be all set. All providers have minor issues, but it's how and if they fix them that matters. I have gotten a credit for issues. Since the problems have been resolved for months the quality continues to be excellent.
Reliability - 5 out of 5 stars: This is similar to the Call Quality category in that when those minor issues appeared it wasn't too reliable. After having used Vonage and Packet8 in the past with poor results, I expected more from these guys. If I were not so picky and demanding I may not have noticed half the issues. I am that way, I did notice them, and they did fix them in a timely manner and as I said above, I got credits. Since those initial issues were months ago, they have established a pattern of reliability for me.
Tech Support - 5 out of 5 stars: No matter who I've spoken to, they've been courteous and helpful. If they didn't know what was wrong right away, they looked into it. They've communicated very well over the phone (always call back) and in e-mail. Sometimes I have to tell them that I don't need a call back right away because it's 1 AM on Sunday. They still do call me back. They really have gone out of their way more than I've ever experienced. To me, besides the obvious benefits of an unlimited incoming/outgoing toll free number, this is their strongest point of all.
Value for the Money - 5 out of 5 stars: I had Vonage and it didn't work very well for me back in 2002. After that I tried Packet8. With Vonage's virtual numbers and even when Packet8 adds them, this was a better deal. I have family spread out everywhere (MD, NY, NH, FL, etc..) and they can all call me without the need for many virtual numbers. No surcharges from payphones and all taxes/fees are built into the $41.99 price per month.
I have been an active user of DSL Reports since April of 2000 and I am NOT an employee of any provider. I'm not an agent, affiliate, or reseller of any ISP or VoIP provider. Just take a look at any of my over 700 posts if you have any question as to the validity of this review. In a time of big VoIP companies and even start ups with poor customer service I think one with great service needs to be recognized. Just give them a call at 1-800-914-2943 and if you get voicemail they'll call you right back.

Jan '08 - just an update.
Quantumvoice has given me more and more reason to stay with them; solid, reliable performance. Nary a dropped call for at least 6 months!
If I had more than two thumbs, they'd all be up...
- Update 02/07/06
Voice Mail fixed. Also, you can now choose a Michigan number to appear on the caller ID instead of your toll-free number. Two thumbs up.
- Update 01/30/06
Had a small issue with Voice Mail (sound quality), and called them three times today - they picked up the phone twice within a few seconds. The third time, I waited a short time, then decided to e-mail, and got a reply within 2 hours.
I therefore revised their CS to 5 (Best).
They're looking into the Voice Mail issue.
Jan '05:
I have my own Sipura 2100 and decided, based on online reviews and bad experiences with other VoIP companies, to go with QuantumVoice.
I had delays setting up because 1) I was trying to get a 1-800 number, not a 1-866, and 2) I wanted a type of number ending with "PAUL" and 3) this was the period between Christmas and New Year.
I fired off e-mails, and got replies sporadically. The CS personnel were always courteous, and apologized for the delays. They were apparently short-staffed for the holidays, and I can well understand that.
I gave an 80% review on Customer Service due to the delays in contacting them (often a day or two), but if I have occasion to call them in the future and and they provide quicker response, I'll adjust it. For those who are consider getting a new connection thought QV, I don't think this would be a major issue, since the time I was calling them was a busy time. Anyhow, trust me, you won't have to call them very often, and - unlike other companies I could mention - they do answer e-mails.
Once I got the connection, it has been rock-solid throughout. No blackouts, no bad connections, no problems at all.
I have a toll-free number, and my only grouse is that my name on the caller ID always appears as "1-800 Service" and I'm NOT a telemarketer providing 1-800 service!
Other than that, and the lack of being able to choose your own number, I'm quite happy. The call quality is great, I rarely contact customer service, my telephone bill is low...life is great!
Oh, I forgot....the website needs a major update. It's akin to a house without furniture - it does the job, but it's colorless and tasteless!
Dave

--------------------------------------UPDATE 02/13/2008----------------------------------
Am still very very happy with QuantumVoice service, reliability, billing, tech support, customer service AND their web portal. I did not purchase the service for the web portal, but for their unique true unlimited 800 Voip service. With the price reduction since my installation and all fees and taxes included, in my opinion trumps all other Voip suppliers out there.
The most amazing thing to me is that if there is a problem, my cell phone still gets the call with simul-ring and the problem is fixed even before I get a chance to contact them. I don't have to worry about missing calls or forgetting to turn on call forwarding if I go out, since I leave simul-ring activated all the time.
Thanks for the super service QuantumVoice - you're the best.
---------UPDATE 03/15/2007---------
No complaints with my QV unlimited 800 service thus far. What really amazed me was that during the transition period from Advanced Media Services to Digital Realm there were absolutely no service interruptions for me. With a lower price than when I signed up, with 911, taxes and fees included, Caller ID now with name and number and with failover, I couldn't be happier. It seems like two services in one - unlimited in and unlimited out. All this at the same price (minus taxes and fees) that I'm currently paying for unlimited local and LD (outgoing only) POTS service. I believe that I really have chosen wisely. I use QV as my second line and can use 7 or 10-digit local dialing and either 10 or 11-digit LD dialing.
---------UPDATE----------
QuantumVoice continues to provide me with outstanding 800 service at a lower price than when I signed up about a year and a half ago. The price was reduced from $42 to $40/month with no taxes or surcharges or even 911 charges to date. If and when there is a problem, which is not often, it always gets fixed before I even have a chance to call or e-mail them. QV may not be perfect, but it does best what I expect any phone line to do - make and receive calls when I need it. I even used QV to call my local telco's repair service last May when a cable cut caused about a 25 hour service disruption on POTS. I could have used my cell phone, but I could not resist the urge to report POTS was down, but that I was calling on my VoIP line. This world would be a finer place if all services including customer service departments were like QuantumVoice's.
------ UPDATE ------
QuantumVoice continues to offer me outstanding service with good voice quality, good uptime and the utmost in professional customer service if needed. Billing is on time with no problems. It ceases to amaze me that VoIP is not QV's main business and they treat you as if it is not only their only business, but that you are their only customer. This just doesn't seem to happen these days, but with QV it indeed does. You get more than you pay for in my opinion, not just the service itself, but in the "we aim to please our customers" attitude with all their support staff. They like VoIP and their customers and it shows.
---- UPDATE ----
Am still very very happy with QuantumVoice's unlimited 800 VoIP service. While I did have a short outage since my last update, it was fixed promptly. This in my opinion is to be expected with any VoIP service. Am still getting very very good voice quality. I am also amazed that I can go anywhere and still receive my incoming toll-free calls on my cell phone (provided it's not out of range) with QV. I use simul-ring to ring both my POTS line and my cell phone. Whichever line is answered first gets the call. You get three (3) numbers with QV 800 service. An 800 toll-free number, a MI fax line to get incoming FAXes sent to your e-mail address and another MI DID number for overseas calls. I get billed $41.99 on each 1st of the month and never get any junk fees or taxes added on, nor any surcharges for calls from a pay phone. This service really rocks!
---- UPDATE ----
Continue to get outstanding voice quality with as of yet no know down time. In my opinion this is the two most important aspects of any VoIP service - I can ask for no more - when something is perfect, it can't be improved. Just my humble opinion. I am still very very pleased with QuantumVoice 800 VoIP service.
---- UPDATE----
Was hesitant to order this service because I already had a POTS 800 number with no installation charge, minimums or monthly fee, with $.06/minute for incoming calls. I also already had Packet8 unlimited VoIP and POTS unlimited LD.
But, I decided to request a LNP of my 800 POTS number to QuantumVoice 800 unlimited VoIP service. The number port was rejected a few times by my carrier with no explanation, but QV kept requesting again until it happened. It took about 7 weeks from the order date for my service to be transferred to QV.
Am using the Sipura SPA-2000 furnished by QV and I think the voice quality is better than POTS. If you visit QV's web site you will find most of the standard VoIP features so I will not go into that aspect. The thing that amazes me is that in the past 800 numbers were only for incoming calls to my knowledge, therefore behind every 800 number was a non 800 number that in my case was also used for outgoing local and LD calls. The unique thing about QV is that it is like having a virtual number in every rate center in every one of the 50 US states, with unlimited incoming calls to you. If that were not enough you also have unlimited outgoing calls to all 50 US states plus all of Canada just like most of the other VoIP providers.
Installation was virtually plug and play with no major problems.
The web site is more than adequate for my uses.
Have had no outages thus far, but I have only been using this service for a very short time.
Customer service and tech support is more than you could ever ask for. One night I called very late with a question and left a message and not only was called back promptly, but shortly into the call I received another call on CW also from tech support asking if they could help. Have never heard of this before in VoIP, but it did happen. They also delivered my Sipura on a Saturday evening by FedEx, a few weeks before my service was ported. Don't think this was necessary, but again very very outstanding service from a company with an industry first. Unlimited Toll-Free VoIP.
I believe QV now supports the Sipura SPA-3000 for you techies out there. They also are offering a business Toll-Free VoIP service which includes 3000 minutes for an additional $13.

"Phone Portal"

First off: I have tried and tested many voip services including Packet8, Sunrocket, ViaTalk, Vitelity, CallCentric, CurrentVoice & MyNetPhone which has provided me with a good viewpoint on various VOIP offerings.
I have kept QV in the back of my mind for some time as others have mentioned consistent line quality/reliability over time, but had stayed away as they seemed pricier than other standard VOIP plans in the past. Now they offer plans ranging from $9.95 to 55.00 for residential/SOHO with taxes/e911 fees inclusive (a rarity now!), and I thought I would give them a try as VT seems to be slipping in many fronts lately.
Setup with a Linksys PAP2-NA was simple and easy, dial tone on 1st try. Ping to sipdr.quantumvoice-sip.com is a very low 31ms! No packet loss either. I used 7 digit dialplan in setup, works fine. No delay in making outbound calls. Call clarity is among the better I have seen in the last few years.
There is no doubt the phone portal is severely lacking, the sales rep even stated this overtly when signing up. They claim that a new one is in the works and will be rolled out in the near future. The features do work, though many require configuring through the phone itself vs. the portal. Voice mail is simple but again works. The sign up process is cumbersome at the moment, but again an upgrade is apparently in the works.
I will update more when I have placed/received enough calls to comment further.

First off sign up is slow and cumbersome, you have to sign up over the phone and by fax and wait for them to order a number if they don't have one in stock. I setup my PAP2T-NA using the info provided and was up and running in minutes with some minor issues that I opened tickets on but unfortunately fell into a black whole and never received any replies so I called and spoke to support and the person I needed to speak to was unavailable but they were aware of the issues and would get back with me, after several days of calling and being told they would contact me I finally received an answer regarding the call log taking "minutes" to load and was told the system will be upgraded in the first quarter that will fix this. I also opened a ticket over QV not sending out VMWI and this went on for a week before they told me it was affecting a lot of people and they were working on it, they did fix it.
QV advertises outbound CID with "name" and number but support says they do not support outbound name but are looking at adding it in the future. I also asked if calls to toll free numbers would use minutes under the lite and plus plans and was told yes by one rep and no by another so I still don't know the answer and the web portal is just about useless, it does not give much in options and there is no way to sort your call logs nor does it tell you how many minutes you have used outbound so you know how close you are getting to your limit, support says that they have a new portal in beta and will be rolled out in the first quarter.
With all this said and I know it sounds like I am being harsh on QV but I was saving the best for last and that is that they have been very reliable with exceptional sound that surpasses any provider I have tried yet. So the bottom line is they are a no frills provider that is cheap (I chose unlimited incoming 500 minutes outbound for 12.95, this includes all 911 fees and taxes) and reliable with basic options. I will be glad when they upgrade the portal as this is the biggest drawback to the service and a better way to submit and track tickets would be nice.

My family has been a QuantumVoice customer since February of 2007. The service that they offer is the best VoIP service we have ever had. We switched to VoIP because we have broadband and were getting tired of almost $70 a month Verizon bills. Paying only 12.95 for 500 minutes in the US and Canada and free incoming calls is the best ever! We have rarely had outages and if we do they are caused by our ISP, not QuantumVoice. I highly recommend QuantumVoice for a person who is looking for a relatively inexpensive VoIP provider with excellent customer service.

"Call quality was Fine"

"Terrible Tech Support"

I tested QuantumVoice for a day. Set up and installation were simple. Sound Quality was fine. However, I was not able to send faxes and QuantumVoice's call forwarding sometimes placed a Michigan area code on the number I was forwarding calls to. That was unacceptable. Jeremy, in tech support, was clueless and played the blame game real well.
QuantumVoice was not for me.
