    ** Updated 07/09/08 **

I will be staying with Nuvio for another year. Why temp fate? Their VOIP phone quality has been at the land-line level and their services has been impeccable. The few times I have called them or emailed them they have promptly answered all my questions.

I was thinking about trying out ViaTalk, but that option did not work. I instant messaged (IM) the Customer Service Manager at ViaTalk on May 5, 2008 with two simple questions. I am still waiting on a response back; maybe the IM got lost?

    ** Updated 05/15/08 **

Nuvio is still the VOIP service I use and yes I still give them all 5s. Their technical and customer support have been the best I have had, all my questions are answered in minutes.

The only shortcomings so far are:
    1. Cannot block anonymous calls.
    2. Cannot block any calls at all. Forget about blocking the nagging telemarketers or other unwanted calls.
    3. Dashboard (Nuvio’s VOIP phone management WEB panel) is very, very slow.

For me Nuvio’s VOIP phone quality has been at the land-line level. When my friends or family call they have no idea that I am using a VOIP phone.

I am coming up on my Nuvio one year renewal and I am tempted to try ViaTalk (before renewal). Nuvio is really geared to business and having anonymous blocking would be nice. But there is a lot to be said about having a nice clear VOIP line (Nuvio) that always seems to work and no billing surprises.

Maybe I should not temp fate, new billing (ViaTalk), new setup issues and just enjoy my Nuvio phone quality.

Whatever my choice I will have to decide soon. Once Nuvio charges my credit card for the yearly fee, they will not refund any of the yearly fee if I change providers.

    ** Original review 07/27/07 **

I would recommend Nuvio for all your VOIP needs

Nuvio’s phone quality is excellent and technical & customer support is the best.

Nuvio did everything they said they would – I have nothing but praises for their service and call quality. They made my transfer from SunRocket a smooth transition – thank you Nuvio for how you supported me in this transition.

I was able to transfer my SunRocket LINKSYS SPA2102 to Nuvio following their directions. I was able to make calls on my Nuvio temporary number within an hour. My SunRocket phone number was ported in less than five days – the fastest port ever for me.

    Nuvio business service unacceptable

We're a small software company with 8 phones in various geographic locations. It's great because we can take a phone anywhere and plug it in, and it just works. However, we've had all kinds of trouble getting incoming calls to work properly. We have a call queue for our support department which is supposed to put people in there and dish them out in the order they are received. Some of the problems we've had with the queue include:
    - No audio received- Caller can hear us, but we can't hear them.
    - Callers in queue for up to 20 minutes without ANY of our phones ringing.
    - Calls from queue hang up 15 seconds after we answer them, while we are talking to a customer.
    - Callers get very poor audio quality even though we can hear them fine.

We've tried 4 different routers, including ones on their recommended list. We've set up a separate VLAN just for our phones and run them on a separate router than our computers. We're on a full T1 and average 1100 kb down and 1400 up pretty much all of the time. It's not our network. Their servers are in Dallas, and we're north of Milwaukee, so that may have something to do with it. For all I know, phones further south could work perfectly.

We can't see who's in the queue or how many callers there are either. It would be nice to have that information.

We also have no way to get a "night mode" automatically- whoever is turning on night mode has to log into their web site with full admin privileges to change the call treatment. Obviously we can't have people sitting in a call queue when our office is closed...

We're looking to switch to another provider. Nuvio has some nice features, but I guess their business-class service really isn't right for us.

    Re: Nuvio business service unacceptable

Nick here are some suggestions that might help you determine your VOIP issues.

If your company has the money, try Network Instruments Observer (expert) product and configure it as you would a network probe. With this tool you will be able to reassemble the VOIP conversation back to the application layer to determent the connection issues. VOIP traffic is not encrypted so you will be able to study the application conversation. After Observer we utilize tools such as OPNET ACE to reassemble the conversation and determine the VOIP issue. Or we conduct a WAN analysis.

I would also recommend staying with G711 Codex (if your network will support an upstream of 90k per conversation). In my opinion, G711 gives a much better sound quality – so I prefer not to utilize compression with VOIP conversations.

I would be very careful to have a detailed understanding of your network – I utilize Observer to do this. For example, is your networking given your ICMP errors (unreachable ports…). Do you have lots of retransmissions, is your VOIP’s RFactor and MOS acceptable. A good network tool can tell you why you are having unacceptable VOIP quality.

Moving your VOIP adapters around can be very problematic as you will not have a through understanding of each network.

Location can make a difference and a good network tool that can reassemble the VOIP back to the application thread will give you a clear understanding of what the problem is. With a new provider you could have the same issues, unless you know for sure what is going on with you VOIP.

Sorry to hear of your problems, hopefully you can get them all work out.

After 6 months with Nuvio, I couldn't be happier. I did have one outage on a Sunday morning that lasted about 2 hours on 2-Dec-07. Other than that, it's been perfectly reliable with terrific call quality.

    Original Review:

After Sunrocket melted down I signed up with Nuvio. I had been looking at them for some time, since for the most part, reviewers rave about the uptime. The setup process was relatively painless and simple. I had a few issues registering my ATA, but tech support was easy to get ahold of and able to fix things for me in a matter of minutes. My number port was completed in a timely manner. So far service has been working great (only had it for about 15 days, so I'll try to update this after 6 months). 7 digit dialing works fine. Call quality is very good (bandwidth saver off). They don't have some of the bells and whistles of other VOIP (call blocking, distinctive ring for virtual numbers), but if the reliability is there, I won't miss these features much. I just hope they don't let the influx of the new customer base (former Sunrocket customers) influence them to add features before they are fully tested for reliability. The customer portal is not as intuitive as some other VOIP services, but it's not too bad (adding services is pretty simple, although pricing for these services is usually only discovered in th faq section).

I needed a new VOIP provider when SunRocket fizzled. I read the advice on the SunRocket forum for refugees & decided on Nuvio as it had been in business since 1997 servicing business customers & opened their doors to residential customers when SR's 200,000 customers were looking for a new home. Setup was quick & easy using my Innomedia Gizmo supplied by SunRocket. I called support twice during brain farts & I got through in less than 5 minutes to clear speaking, friendly support techs who resolved my issues politely. I've had no problems with the service in the month I've had it and call quality is excellent. There are cheaper solutions but I'm not looking for the cheapest. I want the best. I'm happy.

I ordered the service on 2/28 and received the TA on the 3rd. The installation instructions recommend installation in front of the router but I chose to install behind it (because it was quicker). I plugged it into a free port and the service came right up. The TA defaults to the G711 codec and the difference between the G711 and G729 codec’s was noticeable. Call quality was usually the same as my POTS line and at worst as good as a decent cell call. I do experience a slight popping from time to time but it does not affect the ability to use the phone. The website is nicely designed and configuring the features including selecting the codec is intuitive. So far I have not noticed any outages. I had a problem initially with reaching tech support. The phone number on their webpage always rang busy. I opened a problem with support on the website and it was responded to almost immediately. I received an e-mail from their ticketing system with the problem number and a link to the problem record so I could check status and update if necessary. When I received the TA and went out to set up the features I noticed that the tech support number was changed on the website. This number worked fine and I was connected quickly to a support rep. I'm a Packet8 subscriber also and probably the most accurate measure of the service is the fact that my wife is satisfied with this service. Call quality was so bad for us on P8 that my wife told me she was ready to tell me to re-install the POTS line. I'm convinced that latency to the P8 system in California (I'm in SC) and the overhead from the G729 codec made it impossible to have decent call quality if all the stars weren't aligned perfectly. A couple things I'd like to see is a more robust set of FAQ's on the website and the ability to see call quality stats on jitter, packet loss, and latency. That was very easy to do with the P8 TA. I'm going to try and port the P8 number over to Nuvio and make it my primary service. I'm told they have been successful in doing that. I'll keep everybody posted.

3/4/2005 I'm still satisfied with the call quality and reliability of the service. I used somewhere over 2000 minutes in and outbound last month and did not notice any outages. Other than the occasional breakup (like a marginal cell call and in most cases it seems related to network performance according to ping plotter) the calls have been great. I faxed my LNP authorization on 2/8 to port my Packet8 number over to them. So far we've not had any luck with that. I've called several times this week and they were working on it but weren't having any luck. Pam at tech support has told me she'd call back with an update but so far I've had to call her. I've been a little disappointed that she hasn't followed up with status as promised but I'm not losing any sleep over it. I will drop the rating on tech support a bit though. All in all I'm very satisfied and glad I made the switch.

3/9/05 Just an update. I submitted my LNP request to move my Packet8 number over to Nuvio on February the 8th. I'm happy to report that you can apparently port a P8 number over. The porting process didn't go very smooth with Nuvio. I called Nuvio a number of times to get an update on the LNP and while they were always polite and for the most part informative they never did get back to me with information as promised. The LNP request was rejected by Level3 3 times for no apparent reason. It finally took a phone call to the President of Carolina Net (the reseller) and some help from a P8 reseller (who just happened to post a thread on porting numbers) to get this done. Anyway right now I'm a happy camper since I don't have to give out another new number to everybody.

6/17/05 Another update after having the service for a few months. After working through some issues with latency going from my ISP into the Sprint network the call quality and reliability has been good. Aside from an occasional outage early in the morning due to scheduled maintenance I haven't noticed any problems. I wish they would do a better job of communicating scheduled outages to customers but that's about my only complaint. This service is just about as good as it can get.

8/27/05 After using the service for 6 months I can say that I'm very satisfied with Nuvio. The real test is that my wife doesn't even talk about the phone service. No complaints from her at all. I also don't give it much thought. You just pick up the phone and call. I've gotten used to the website update and they continue to add back the features that got dropped after the upgrade. If I have any criticism for Nuvio it continues to be the way they handle and communicate changes. The upgrade had a huge impact on the service and it was obvious that it was not properly planned with a fallback to the old system in the event of problems. On the up side even though we lost features the basic service remained rock solid. I'm definitely sticking with them!

2/13/06 I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary with Nuvio. I continue to be very satisfied with the service. It's been quite some time since I've needed to call tech support and the service just continues to work. They had one system wide outage which was handled quickly. The communication on the outage was outstanding and when it was over they even sent an e-mail to subscribers apologizing for the outage and describing actions they were going to take to ensure it didn't happen again. I'm a happy customer and have no plans to look elsewhere. Great job Nuvio!

7/13/06 After 1.5 years with Nuvio I can honestly say that I don't give much thought anymore to the fact that I'm using VoIP. Nuvio has been every bit as reliable as my old POTS service. Since signing up with them they have added 911 services which I have test successfully, made vast improvements to their website, and have apparently fixed their change control problems. Nuvio is running now like a well oiled utility. While the price is a little higher than other providers and they charge taxes that others don't I won't be switching. If you're looking for quality this is one vendor you should consider.

4/9/07 The call quality hasn't been as good recently and I've decided to give Viatalk a try. I'm in the process of getting my number ported over. If they can port the number I'll be dropping Nuvio. The combination of the higher price for less features, taxes and fees, and worsening quality finally pushed me to try someone else. They were a good choice but I'm not sure that others haven't caught up and passed them.

    Hey there Bad~

I agree with you 100%- I actually just finished porting my numbers out of Nuvio and just cancelled their NPBX Service recently.

Their call quality has greatly diminished over the last few months. I used to be a huge proponent of Nuvio, but have had extensive issues with them since the 1st of the year.

It's unfortunate, but I guess the market is taking it's toll on some providers.

Nuvio is a bunch of crooks! I went to sign up with their service went to order until it said i had to pay $150 up front!!!! I canceled my order and still was charged! it took me 5 phone calls to get my refund and not until after i threatened to call Visa and reverse charges from my bank to them did they do anything. Nuvio has gone down hill over the last year!

    **Update 03/17/07**

Service continues to be good although they have some stupid annoying problems. For instance on my Polycom IP501 I cannot initiate an automatic call-forwarding that works 100%. I have to log into the control panel and set up a call treatment to do this. Complete pain in the ass if you ask me. My contract is up next month and I'll port my # to VoIPStreet.

    **Update 8/9/06**

I'm getting irritated with the nPBX service and Nuvio's support in general. I have some features that don't work properly such as voicemail attachments to email when using webmail and call forwarding now functioning 100%. I submitted tickets 2 weeks ago and have heard NOTHING regarding this. $50/month for this service is a ripoff.

**Updated 5/6/06 as I dropped the consumer level service and signed up for their nPBX service**

I just got my Polycom 501 phone and nPBX service today. It's saturday and I had a question regarding how to set up call treatments. 15 minutes later I had a return call and a support rep showed me how to set it up. Fantastic service IMO for any day of the week, much less a Saturday.

I have used many VoIP providers as my reviews show, and let me say that using a TRUE IP phone makes all the difference in the world. Voice quality, even on the lowest setting, is far above and beyond anything residential using an ATA and an analog phone. The nPBX system ROCKS for small businesses. I have already signed up as a reseller and can't wait to show this to clients.

    **Update 5/3/06**

I cancelled my residential VoIP line and signed up for the nPBX for my home office. Since I've become a reseller for Nuvio's products I figured I had better get to know IP Phones.

    **Original 5/1/06**

This is a 48-hour review that will be updated as I continue to use the service. I'm looking at becoming a VoIP reselller for both residential and business services and Nuvio keeps coming up as a good company to work with.

The signup was easy and I got the RT31P2 4 days later. I humored myself for about 15 minutes and tried to use it as my router but it wouldn't properly pass PPTP VPN connections, so I went back to my Cyberguard SG560 and just created a vlan and allocated the appropriate bandwidth to the RT31P2.

Service seems decent, although for $30/month you would think they'd have more features. My VoicePulse line has scheduled DND, addressbook CalllerID, and is $5/month cheaper.

Their website is atrocious, it has about 3 times more links than it needs to for the amount of features they offer. They really need to redesign their site as it's painful to use and the wording doesn't make sense in places.

Call quality is okay, I had my QoS settings wrong in the beginning and calls kept fading in and out. I fixed that and call quality is fine.

All in alll it's not bad service, the company seems good to deal with for agents, and I'm looking forward to testing this service.

    My Other Reviews·Earthlink Cable Mo..
This is my first VoIP provider, so I have little to compare with other than friends' comments on theirs. A friend of mine uses Vonage and suggested them (offering a free month of service in the process). I chose Nuvio (provided by Carolinanet.nuvio.com) based on reviews here and on other internet sites.

When looking at a VoIP provider, I checked features offered, price, and service/support reviews. On features and price, Vonage and Nuvio look pretty much, if not exactly the same. The difference I noticed was with customer service issues. Based on Nuvio's high marks for customer service and reliability, compared with low marks from many Vonage users, I chose Nuvio.

Some reviews mentioned long wait times for equipment and setup from Nuvio, but I assume those issues have been resolved. From order online late in the evening on Jan 12, I received my equipment and was up and running on the evening on the 18th. For me, that is pretty quick - anyway, I can't complain!

So far I have no complaints about voice quality or features. I have not had reason to contact technical support yet. I can say that I have received emailed notices of service outtages or problems from Carolinanet. Well, ok, just one such notice - and I found it to be very proactive. I welcome the good, timely communication of any potential service issues. I was at work at the time, and never even noticed a problem with my phone service at home. I'm just glad they let me know.

Price: I signed up for the 14.99/month residential package - the total bill seems to come to 16.94 with the "regulatory recovery fee" and "federal excise tax." Setup costs were higher, which includes a $29.99 activation fee and a $10 shipping charge for the ATA. The ATA I received is a Linksys RT31P2, with 2 phone ports and 3 100 MB ethernet ports.

I did not setup my ATA in the recommended configuration (directly behind the cable modem, using the ATA as a switch for the networked PCs). I have a hardware firewall directly behind my modem, with another Linksys switch attached on the LAN side. I connected my VoIP ATA to an available port on the Linksys switch, and it works fine. I wanted to separate my ATA from the rest of the network using a separate interface on the firewall, but I haven't gotten that to work yet - however, that seems beyond the scope of support from Nuvio. I haven't even contacted them for help with that.

The only issues I've had with service to date are when my ISP goes down, but that obviously has nothing to do with my VoIP provider.

    UPDATE:

Well, DSLR asked me to update my review, so here I am!

Nothing much has changed, but for the fact that Nuvio now offers e911 service. I had a minor hassle getting that configured: my address was not recognized when I tried to activate on the CarolinaNet website. A quick call to CarolinaNet tech support solved that, and they manually added my address to the database (or whatever they had to do).

Anyway, everything else is still great. No quality issues, and no need to optimize for voice traffic. Prices haven't gone up - they bill me automatically each month.

I do have one issue: due to a setting on the ATA (I believe), my VoIP phones always show "missed calls." I looked up what needs to be altered on the ATA config to keep that from happening, but haven't gotten around to making the change.

No other problems, and things are working fine!

That's unfair. Nuvio is a fine service with a lot of integrity. They also don't have to bribe people with incentives to get them to sign up. 911 is not the be-all, end-all for everyone. Many people don't even have reliable 911 on POTS. The FCC mandate is BS, IMO.

I switched to Nuvio in hopes to receive a more solid service than I had with Packet8. So far, their technical support is much better, and the voice quality is higher.

After ordering my service it did take a while to receive the adapter due to a shortage at Nuvio. However, they shipped it out as quickly as possible, and took care of prorating the billing.

Overall the service is great, and I'm looking forward to being a long time customer.

Update 8/2/06: Not much to say about their service, other than it always works. As long as my internet connection works, the service works. If my internet is down, then the calls forward to my cell phone. To be honest, I forget about the service, since it just works.

I have used Nuvio since the first of March. I ordered the 500 minute monthly at $14.99 a month plus taxes. The installation was very staight forward. I initially connected the Motorola VT1005 to the cable modem to ensure it receieved any outstanding updates. The modem didn't appear to need any. Then set it for static IP and put it behind the WRT54G router with no ports opened for it. I have Comcast Cable 4000 down 384 up. It has had no problems since. I would like it better if it had more features such as a PSTN jack, simultaneous ring and selective forwarding. I initially applied at the Nuvio web site and didn't receive a reply from my e-mails or website applications. I signed up with CarolinaNet after searching this forum and reading positive comments about them as a Nuvio dealer. I didn't try Nuvio's 800 number and should have done that - oh well.

31Dec05 - Nuvio is working every time we use the phone.

12July2006-Nuvio is still working very well. The reliability is fantastic. Still wish it had the ability to block un-wanted calls by number. Had a minor provisioning problem when removing the old temporary number that was corrected quickly.
