I signed up with babytel due to the reviews on this site but i have been nothing but displeased with the service. this is the one month review (approx)
let me first start by saying initial communication from babytel was abysmal. I do have my own appliance (the same one they send you as their own babybox so quality should be the same, the linksys spa2102) I did not receive any information on how to actually configure the thing and spent hours searching on the internet trying to find the configuration options. I finally got a response back saying they had to charge me an extra $5 to do it the way i wanted. I was just asking about the setup because i had no idea how it worked so the logical thing in the router config was to set a username, proxy and password. Finally got that resolved that i had to add a line of code to lock the box to their service, which i had no problem with, but they never sent this info to me nor is it in their help pages??
Now the service, I don't use the phone much but when i have most of the time there is some sort of issue. The first long call we had (about an hour) had a faint echo on the receivers end. The next one the user could barely hear us because it was breaking up (we could hear them fine).
Then we tried called the UK and it said to call customer support, it would not let the call through. Their response was that there is a limit of $10 for long distance. OMG what? at first i thought this was per month then found out it was per day (more reasonable). Problem is, we had not even used the phone that day!! had not used a single minute! Still no response from support as to the solution of calling our UK friend and that was a week ago.
I just finished a call in which I heard myself echoing. Really frustrating. I've only actually had 2 good calls, clear on both ends but those were short 5-10 minute ones.
I know the connection can have something to do with call quality but am using SHAW high speed internet which I would think would be sufficient enough. Also asked them to set 711 protocol as no compression should result in better call quality.
lastly, the support section on their website is tremendously lacking.
support reps never really seem to understand the question or the problems which is also frustrating.
overall I am getting ready to switch to unlimitel as am not pleased with the service. if anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears. Am using the Linksys SPA2102
UPDATE July 3rd: well i cancelled due to more troubles, voice mails were not being received (at least 6 that i know of) and sometimes the phone would not ring and the other user would just get a weird tone. I am done with trying to be loyal to a canadian voip provider, i have switched to callcentric just know and only took 5 minutes to get it all working! sure best the 2 days it took babytel.
