I ordered an installed in less than a week, and after an initial snafu on my part trying to get it to work behind my router, I was up and going. For the month I have had it, call quality has been excellent. Clear sound, with no one noticing it was not a POTS line. Also, no dropped calls, echos, and any other weirdness - so far it just works like advertised. The only outages I have had so far were a result of my cable modem going offline, not a problem with Callvantage itself.
I have rewired my house with a simple disconnect of the POTS line on the side of the garage, and all three of my phones work just fine with my TA plugged into one of the wall jacks. Also the Caller ID display on my Dish Network receiver works fine, love that Caller ID on the TV. Wife and I both love the voicemail by web & email features, as well as the Locate Me forwarding list. I even noticed that for numbers that don't have a name for Caller ID, if I add them to the phone book, the name I add will appear in the Caller ID. We don't have a need for fancier features, and I realize that there are other options cheaper than Callvantage. But, the service works as advertised, the number port of my home number happened when they said it would, and it's cheaper than what I was paying before. Even with the taxes/fees I'm at $32 a month. I was paying $33.50 a month for a plain POTS line with only Caller ID, plus whatever long distance charges I racked up.
One final note, the couple times I spoke to customer service (for my number port, I ordered that after the fact), the wait time was less than 5 minutes and the reps were polite. In a time where hold times of over 30 minutes and rude reps are the norm, this was a pleasant surprise. Overall, the wife and I are satisfied at this point.
Update 5/29/09: Just signed up with VoicePulse since CallVantage is being discontinued. In the time I had ATTCV, I was very satisfied. We never had any major outages, only 3 or 4 I can recall that lasted 15-30 mins that were after 10PM. ATTCV wasn't the cheapest or the most full-feautered VOIP provider, but it was reliable with great call quality and far cheaper than Verizon's local POTS calling plans. I'm sorry to see it go.

I recently ported my two Vonage lines to AT&T CallVantage because I could get a $5.00 per line discount by also having an AT&T wireless account. The questionable long term survivability of Vonage also was a factor, but at this time the lower price for the same class of service was the trigger.
A major (for me) advantage is that the AT&T CallVantage service/ATA is able to utilize the load balancing features of my dual WAN DI-LB604 router. With the Vonage service/ATA(s), I had to setup the router to only use only one WAN port for VoIP. I don't know if this is due to the hardware/firmware in the AT&T ATA (D-Link DVG-5102S), or to how the AT&T servers handle SIP and RTP traffic, but it was an unexpected pleasant surprise.
The only operational downside so far is with the AT&T CallVantage voice mail. There is no way to disable it, and no matter how I setup the "Locate Me" function to forward unanswered calls to my cell phones, voice mail usually gets left with the AT&T CallVantage voice mail (which I have setup for the maximum 10 rings) instead of the AT&T Wireless voice mail. That means that the $5.00 per month discount will likely be eaten up by charges for the three text messages that get sent to the cell phones for each AT&T CallVantage voice mail.
The only real problems were related to delays in porting the two phone numbers, and with canceling the two Vonage accounts (one of them is still active after several attempts to cancel), but neither of those problems are related to the AT&T CallVantage service.
Update: 05/06/2009
AT&T CallVantage no longer provides my telephone service because they are discontinuing the service. The official replacement U-verse Voice was not an available choice to me, so I ported one of the CallVantage numbers to a cell phone and dropped the other one. Thanks for reminding us how much you care for your customers AT&T.

I got CV for work. It is what we are using for work-at-home telecom.
Installation: I wasn't able to put the D-Link VoIP Gateway (TA) between my DSL modem (6M/512K) and my router as suggested. Instead, I put it behind my router (Monowall on old system) in a DMZ, ran the QoS Traffic Shaping Wizard and all is well.
Quality: I can be on a call and use NetMeeting and other screen sharing apps with no problem for either voice or screen refresh.
911: You have to sit through a long 911 message before you can press "1" to verify that you are at your correct address. That's a pain, but I have the TA on a UPS, so it is a very occasional thing. You can still receive calls, just can't make any until you set it. Even then, it then places your call after confirmation.
Messaging: I like having my voicemail forwarded to my inbox; worked great this summer when I was on vacation. You can also log into the website and check messages. It shows you who called and gives an easy way to delete all. Especially handy with all of the telemarketers despite my number being not listed.
Overall a good service.
7Apr2009 - Just got notified by corporate that we are discontinuing CV. I have 30 days to move to a new solution.

AT&T CV is a dream and makes having a home phone well worth the money. I plan to eventually bring my 30 year old POTS number from Illinois Bell/Ameritech/SBC and now AT&T over to AT&T CV. I can save $20/month and still have a ton of features and have two lines on the same TA.
I just hope that AT&T CV sticks around for many years to come. Their service and support is second to none and I always get through right away and speak to someone here in the US.

-- 200806??--
SBC "comeback" and other promos won me back to POTS. I guess at this price point and feature set, it's not that exciting of a service.
Cancelling was easy, no retention pressure. Porting from AT&T to AT&T took awhile. I had an extra month of service that I had a hard time paying for because my CC expired and my web login no longer worked.
-- 20080303 --
Unlimited plan really comes to $28.29/mo (24.99+2.31+0.99) + surcharges + taxes which vary by your city/state. $4 in my area.
I updated the monthly cost ($35.62) to reflect the actual cost for the contract term, which includes the start-up charge $40/12=$3.33.
The service has been great.
-- 20080227 --
Unlimited plan $25/mo, includes US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.
Features include VM, call waiting, forwarding, 3way, enhanced locate me, do not disturb, filters ($), etc. Control-by-phone is nice too.
According to the web site, the first month is free, if ordered online, but my email confirmation shows a $30/activatation and $10/shipping. I'll update the review when I have more information.
I received a dlink DVG-5102S-B1 3.3.0-16. As far as I can tell, no obvious way to get sip credentials from it. I have it connected to a UPS.
My only disappointment is with the 10-digit dialing.

I looked into digital phone service, seeking to downsize our budget.
AT&T Call Vantage looked good to me, because they were having a deal going that shaved off another $5.00 per month, because I have an AT&T cell phone.
The TA arrived within a week. Had a little trouble at first, hooking up, because I had to change the order they were hooked up, to get the best internet speed.
But the voice clarity is great! You could compare it to the best land line phone service!
The only problem I have been having is that it sometimes cuts out. On my end it sounds like "snow." (the sound you hear on your TV after the station has signed off) I don't know why it does that, and it can be annoying at times, but the price and clarity make me happy so Call Vantage stays in this house!
UPDATE:
Well, six months ago we had a family tragedy, and my phone was in use, non stop. Seemed like every call was getting cut off...having to call people back just got to be just too much to cope with. The call QUALITY was still there, but the RELIABILITY was terrible. I had called the company previously and tried re-setting everything up countless times, but to no avail. And, since I don't have ATT as my cable provider, I didn't want to get into the dance about where the fault laid, I gave up and reluctantly went back to a land line.

I was getting sick of Qwest's $20 pound-me-in-the-a$$ fees and taxes, so I gave AT&T a try.. $25 a month, which I couldn't pass up, a few friends had it and said they loved it, and so do I, now! Very clear and easy to understand directions, great technical support, and very friendly sales/customer service. No way am I going back to Qworst for phone service. Came with a DLink TA that plugged right into my router, had to configure the ports for passthrough, but otherwise it was very very simple.

************** Update 9/11/08 Well U-Voice just became an option for me and it's $30 for unlimited service with some more calling features then CV. The install just happened today and I will be sending the TA back.
While I had the service I had no complaints at all it was very good. Kind of said to see ATT not accepting new orders. Hopefully they come out with some thing as good or better for those that can't get U-Voice.
************** Update 8/6/08
Service has been great but I noticed when I was downloading/FTP'ing a large file (so maxing out the down or up stream) the call quality got very choppy. With U-Verse the 2wire RG doesn't have QoS. So I put my Linksys WRV200 back into the mix and have that controlling all PC equipment instead of the RG. It's much better now with that handling the QoS. Some times if I am maxing out the up/down and then start a call. The router takes about 20-30 seconds to give the TA the QoS it needs.
Other then that it has been rock solid service.
**************** Original I got rid of comcast phone/internet/cable once ATT U-verse was an option. Here in IL U-voice isn't an option right now. So I decided to try out Call Vantage. I called in to sign up. I do have ATT for wireless and if you do you can get the unlimited plan for $19.99 instead of $24.99. I had heard on the forums here if you had DSL same discount applied. So I asked about u-verse and they said same discount applies.
Took about 7 business days to port my number. TA was sent overnight and setup I had some issues. Called tech support got it working in a matter of minutes. I could make outbound calls inbound weren't ported at that time. Then I got a email saying the port would happen on 2/27. First thing in the morning all was working on the CV line. Switched everything over to the TA.
So far I can't complain it sounds just like POTS. I haven't had any issues other then either power failure, internet or TA glitch. If that happens you can't dial out on the line unless you login to the web portal to confirm your 911 address. Understandable why that's done but some warning would have been nice ahead of time.
Anyone we call can't tell it's VoIP at all. With my U-verse connection I have the 10/1.5 connection. I worked from home one day and I was on the phone and had someone downloading my my FTP server and I did a speedtest.
Your Throughput
Download = 7.225 Mbps Upload = 646.51 kbps
That's pretty impressive and I didn't notice a difference in the quality.

Overall I am happy with the service.
I had to put my TA between my router and my modem due to only transmitting audio not receiving it. It is probably my fault for poor router config and I will try to work it out later but for now it works.......
My wife was POed when she found out that we would have to 10 digit dial.... Now that I changed all our cordless phone's phonebooks with the correct 10 digit #s she really does not care.
Plus the ~400/yr we will be saving over the $40/mo unlimited plan for AT&T POTs.....
