$49.99/ month for Xfinity VOIP versus $36/year for Skype, which is just the cost for a Skype number.

$5 per month about 1 days "A lot of features, text, audio and video, cheap" "cannot use a TA without a computer" "Good Quality, Video, and Text makes it a nice service for families"

We have used Skype in our family with the video feature. Makes my daughter in Atlanta feel like she is closer to the family. Now here husband's family is going to get it so they can use video from up in the northeast.
I also have the SkypeOut at $3 a month for unlimited call to the US and Canada. What a deal that is! We also have a number so people can call-in with regular phones. So for about $60 bucks a year, we have a cheap back-up phone and video calling (basic Skype to Skype calls are FREE).
Quality of the calls has been very good. We are happy with Skype. The only thing I would improve is how you have to dial a US call. 001XXX5551212. Why the zero zero before the 1 plus area code plus number.
July 2012 - Not using Skype Out any more since I use CallCentric mostly for outbound. Still use Skype for calls to other Skype users.
December 2012 - Pretty much moved to Ooma for calls. Skype not a serious option until you can port numbers in and out and connect a standard phone to a skype TA that does not rely on a computer. Still use Skype and Facetime to do video chats with some friends. CallCentric still used with my softphones which is really nice for high quality audio on these endless conference calls.

$6 per month "Free calls between users, $3/month unlimited Canada/USA plan, cheap French DID" "Some reliability issues, connection charges can be frustrating for short calls" "Used plan for Canada/USA and PAYG for outgoing France (and others)"
| Web-site: Ease of Installation: Call Quality: Reliability: Value for money:

I am using the service to contact my family in Canada (from France) with their Skype account (free, with video) or by calling them by phone with my $3 plan. I also have a French SkypeIn number (cheaper with a SkypeOut plan) that costs $40/year. SkypeIn is not available for Canadian numbers, so I had to buy one with another provider (voip.ms) and forward it to my SkypeIn number.
Pay as you go rates are not so bad, but not the best. And there is a connection charge (generally the price of one minute). TIP: if you do not need so much Skype credit (I have to buy a minimum of $14 CAD each time), just pay your SkypeOut plan with it.
Software is available on Linux, but there are some reliability issues. Sometimes, SkypeIn calls will not ring, or even calls from other Skype users. Calls to phones (mostly to France) can be problematic too.
Overall, it has a good value for money.
UPDATE: still good for PC-to-PC calls, but there are cheaper alternatives for PC-to-phone

I've set up with a 12 month subscription for unlimited Skype calls within the US and Canada, along with a telephone number so that others can call me, for $60 a year. You can purchase a stand-alone phone and then use Skype as a home phone replacement. It has been great way to keep from eating up cell phone minutes when staying in touch with friends from college or during telephone meetings (I work from halfway across the country doing website administration and have lengthy phone meetings every few weeks).
Skype's call quality, while impacted by your internet connection quality and hardware, is generally very good, and is better than the voice quality over POTS. I purchased a stand-alone Skype phone, which looks exactly like your standard wireless handset, and have been very happy with the service.
Note, Skype does not provide 911 service, so if that is a critical feature for you, or you do not have a cell phone for emergency calls, this is not the right service for you.

12/9/2010 Been using it as a backup for some time and it has been reliable and economical. I am paying for Skype out and Skype In that gives me my own number to receive calls from any phone. If someone leaves a message, an e-mail is sent. Using a USB Dongle that connects to a wireless handset, that works well.
10/22/09 - Use Skype as a backup and when running out of Cell minutes. I have my own number in my Area Code that can take calls from anyone. Still using the Linksys CIT200. The voice mail system that e-mails me when I have a message works very well. Call quality seems to improve all the time and the updated software works well. end======================================================
In early 2007 took advantage of Skypeout at 50% or $14.95USDper year [used the free version in 2006] then added Skypein with my choice of a local number for $36.00/year.
Tired of using a headset, purchased a Linksys CIT200 cordless handset that plugs into recharger and a transmitter that plugs into a USB port on the computer running Skype. Works just like a landline. All the contacts are stored on the computer.
Have to have a computer running w/ Skype installed and phone transmitter plugged into USB port. Maybe not real "Green".
There was an outage this summer but the company extended term [I prepaid year in advance].
My use is for a secondary phone and since my cell is my only other phone, I use Skype during peak minutes to save cell minutes.
Current version of the software: Version: 3.5.0.239. Release date: September 19, 2007 File name: SkypeSetup.exe File size: 23 MB adds many more features that I have yet tried or even looked at [seems some are free for so many minutes per mo and cost after that and others seem to be just fluff]. Some of the add'l:
-Share videos Add video to your mood.
-Video snapshot Grab pictures of you or who you're talking to.
-Call transfer Transfer Skype calls to your contacts. Features
* Free Skype-to-Skype calls to people anywhere in the world. * Call phones and mobiles at pretty cheap rates per minute. * Instant message when it's not a good time to talk. * See who youre talking to with free video calls. * Forward your calls and get text messages when youre not online.

Great deal for seeing grandchildren who live out of state/town. Came in very handy while my DIL was in Europe. The 5 year old granddaughter could see and talk to her mom every day. Sure made the time away from her easier for everybody.

Can't say anything bad about it. Weather I'm calling my family, or chatting with my friends while playing WoW... it just works fine.

$2 per month "Many free features, improved quality!" "No skype-in numbers available in Canada yet..." "Maybe not the BEST, but good for now..."

I tried Skype several years ago when they were first starting out, and wow, have they evolved since then. If you even have a low-end laptop, it works straight away. The call quality has improved immensely in the time lapsed since I had them.
Absolutely no problems with the calls so far. Cheap unlimited call subscriptions. Cheap international calls (like to the U.K.) Quick and easy account maintenance. Don't have to diddle with softphones, or even my microphone settings.
The only downside is that, even after all the time since I left them, they STILL haven't got any Canadian Skype-In numbers available. That's quite curious. I don't want a Skype-In number where my local friends would have to call some exotic area-code.
But I set my caller ID to my cell phone and they can incoming call me on that, so for now that's a workable solution.

I signed up to call my friends in the US and it works great. I also use it on my iPhone when there is wifi. When you call someone who has caller ID you will show up as a) your skype username b)0001234567 c) a local number Overall I'm happy with it it.
