They are cheap. They can be fast.

I have the 3Mb DSL service with a long distance plan for 25$/month. I've been with them for a year and a half. I connect with a Speedstream 5200 modem/router in router mode which handles the PPPoE so I don't need their outdated "connection manager" software.

Initially, their tech support was good, now it has gone bad. When I call up concerning connection issues, all I really want to know is if there's a problem on their end, and when they'll be up and running smoothly again. If I'm told that everything is OK, only to find out, after fiddling with my software and hardware for a week, that it was their servers all along, I get mad. Not only did I go without internet for a week, but spent countless hours trying to fix something that wasn't broken. Very mad.

So, I'm not asking for tech support guys with computer engineering degrees, just ones who will fess up! You know...... honesty.

They went down for 2 weeks last fall, and I've been down for 2 weeks just now. In between there were a few multi-hour outages. A multi-hour outage...... whatever. A 2 week outage....... no frikken way. I am going to change providers...... as soon as I can get through to them by telephone!!!

My comments deal only with 3WEB DSL and no other part of the company.

When I signed up for this service I was assured by the customer support rep that I could use Linux, "no problem!"

However, when the install kit arrived it included a user agreement that prohibited the use of anything but Windows and demanded the installation of their software. When I asked customer support why I could not use Linux I was told that I HAD to use windows as their software did not work on any other platform. I questioned the need for their software and told “that they needed to use their software in order for accounting purposes".

I then talked to tech support and their answers led me to believe that the software was in fact a pop-ad display system. A little digging on the net and NNTP confirmed my suspicion that the software was in fact spy-ware/popup capable. I do not from my own experience know that 3WEB are using it as such but I declined the agreement and returned the equipment.

From personal experience 3WEBs sales staff uses deceptive tactics to sell their product, their tech support staff are not competent and seem to be an extension of the sales dept.

"Unreliable for fast connection speed."

After more than a year with 3 web DSL, I've experienced times when the connection speed was mostly over 2 Mbps and everything was going good.

Frequently however something goes wrong with their service and the connection speed will drop down to as slow as only 23 Kbps. I use my dial-up to at least get back to 47 Kbps during those weeks.

When calling in for help there is a recorded message during those times advising that the sytem is being upgraded and normal service will be restored in about 2 weeks. The problem is that this message is there for 4 or 5 weeks at a time and this whole scenario repeats frequently. Email complaints to Customer Service on this subject go unanswered.

"Bad customer service"
" They seen to be quick to bill and slow to fix problems."

I switched from Shaw to 3 web

Shaw came and disconnected my internet, even though they were supposed to leave it. I took a week to get them to hook it back up. A week later Shaw disconnected it again and it took another few days to get it back and only after making a huge stink. The CSR at 3web says he is going to give me a free month to make up for the mistakes(he offered btw). They just keep billing me, So I email the web help emails a few times and no response.

Calling them is unless you have 20 min to sit on hold. Finally talk to the CSR and he says he will fix. This time I took his name and # .

They seen to be quick to bill and slow to fix problems.

Just don't bother with 3web. They were great at first, connection was fine, tech support was great. Now, I can't keep a connection for more than 20 seconds, tech support either gives me some run around about turning everything off and on or changing my login and password. Or they don't even answer the phone. One more over to Sympatico.

I signed up for their cable service advertised as true 3mb down /.8 up for 30/mth. When I complained about my sub-par speeds after a week online that were lower than 33k (1996 modem speeds) their tech people asked me to defrag my hard drive or delete spyware and disable my firewall!!! Their tech people were rude and uninformative. The salesman never got back to me when I complained to him. Someone phoned me after I cancelled saying that he was calling to find out how I found their service. He said he was a friend of the salesman who had signed me up and that the salesman was no longer employed at the company as he had quit and really did not deal AT ALL WITH TECH ISSUES [Customer sewrvice is not their forte]. When I told him the issues he said he would contact Rogers and get back to me to find out why my speeds were so low--I never heard from him again--He called me from 403-777-XXXX (I guess their Calgary head office). His first name is the same as the owner of Loblaws. I was promised a refund as a ticket for a refund had been created but I haven't seen it. Funny enough the tech person would issue a REFUND TICKET but never offered A TICKET to investigate low speeds-you figure that one!

Since they made it manditory for thier customers to use their connection tool in order to use thier internet service I have been unable to connect to MSN and IRC networks as well as many websites. When I called technical support asking how to get around the connection tool that they made manditory on Dec 1st 2004 they had no idea what I was talking about. After I spent a few minutes explaining what it was to them the only responce that they gave me was that I should switch providers.

DON'T LET THE ADVERTISED SPEED AND LOW PRICE FOOL YOU!

The pings to anywhere in North America are aweful. You can barely even play online games (such as Counter Strike, Quake, and Unreal Tournament) unless you live in the city the server is located in.

I would not want anybody to get this headache of an ISP. This ISP goes down so often that its hard to download large files. I am canceling my service ASAP and I am switching to a better ISP.

"Unreliable service, bad tech support"
"Can't recomend it to anyone as it is now"

Service is flaky at best. Ever since I signed up it has been nothing but a headache. Initially it was as fast as advertised. Than all of the sudden the speed just dropped down to less than dial-up speeds. Than next day it went back to normal again. As it stands now this seems to happened every few days.

When I called their tech support to inquire about this issue the tech support rep I spoke to was not able to help me at all. I used to work in tech support myself and I knew that all he was trying to do is to just give me a story and get me off the phone.

He asked me if I had a virus scanner and a firewall, which I do, telling me that a lot of connection and speed issues are caused by viruses and spy-ware. When I told him that I do have both and explained to him that the service was not consistently slow but was going back and forth between fast and very slow he suggested that it could be my phone line. I told him that that also doesn't make sense because I used to have Simpatico DSL and never had a problem with it. If line noise was an issue I would have noticed it before I switched to 3web service.

Not wanting to tell me the truth that the problem lies with their server (I ran trace-route and the response times from their cyberus server were horrendous 2000+ ms) he told me he will dispatch an on-site tech to check my line. The fact that no technician ever appeared to do so only confirms my theory that they have some serious backbone issues.

Initially I was thinking that they are just experiencing the growing pains and was willing to give them a chance to fix the problems but the last straw was (or is) the latest of the issues I am having now. It has been four days now that their service just got even worse.

It started with connectivity issues. On first day you could not connect to the servers at all. Then next day you could connect but not access any sites. Today (day 4) you can connect and access some sites and services as you normally would, but you can not access others at all. For example you can not connect to any Microsoft server or service. Norton, slashdot and a few other sites that I frequent could also not be accessed. Some sites will only load partially (text but no pictures).

3Web might be the cheapest provider there is right now, but what does that matter when you don't get the service you are paying for. I am giving them the next 24 hours to resolve the issues and if they are not able to that it is time for me to switch to someone other ISP.

This ISP might seem very promising at first,
supposedly, you get same service as "Bell Sympatico"

3 meg down and 800 kb up.

    seems nice doesn't it?

    problem is, this isn't true.

This isn't even a reseller of BELL!!!

it resells a company that resells BELL!!!!!

what kind of crap is that.

very crappy service, slow speeds near 700kb down at best. i was using a brand new alcatel speedtouch. technical offered no explanation at all.
