I already had Internet and cable TV from Time Warner Cable so I added voip from them in about 2004. Overall I would save money from my long distance calling time. Overall cost with it all bundled is about $100. With Time Warner, it is unlimited local and long distance. Other features that came with it were caller ID, caller ID on TV, 411 and more that are too long to name. All I had to do to install it was go and pick up a new cable modem from tv local office and connect the phone line to it. It couldn't have been easier.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T DSL Service
Dumped my AT&T voice and DSL service. I have been calling a lot lately to fix static on the voice side and dropping DSL. Works OK for a few days and then right back to a bad connection. I have been waiting years for their fiber network. I live in a major metropolitan area but still do not have the fiber service. Switched to Time Warner for internet and VOIP. Order online was extremely easy. Installation went extremely smooth. Once all of the cable connections were installed to my property it took the technician only 5 minutes to bring up the internet service and have my existing voice number ported over. Everything worked immediately.

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable

I ordered the Time Warner Triple Play on the 13th. By the 16th, I had Internet and Cable TV. Since I opted to get my number ported, I was given an install date of the 25th for Digital Phone.

On the 20th, I received a call from Time Warner telling me that the order for the porting was rejected. I acknowledge that that was my fault due to the Verizon account being under my mom's name and the Time Warner under my dad's name. Fixed that and got an install date for the 31st.

Today, they came to my house. Installed the Digital Phone without a hitch. Due to the very last minute, I had Verizon. Then, the tech called and ported the number. NO DOWNTIME!! Made a test call to some friends in California ( long distance from NY) and it was working beautifully!

So far, very pleased with service!

    Update: 5/20/06

Two months later and still happy with my decision to drop all connections with Verizon. Not only do I get all my services under one bill, but the customer support is great! If I call 611, someone picks up immediately! Recently, there was an emergency, my mom dialed 911 and someone responded immediately!! Great!! The service has been rock solid and the only thing I can say is that there is a 2-3 second delay from the time I hang up to the call being actually hanged up. But I can live with it! Love the free long distance as I can now call my cousin to Puerto Rico without having to use my cellphone and wasting my minutes. My dad also used his cellphone to make long distance calls, not anymore! Hopefully, they will add the on-screen caller ID and also offer a low-cost second line. I also took on whole house VoIp. After canceling my other line with Verizon, I disconnected all wiring. It was a breezy since the installer had left a special phone jack installed. Just some rewiring and bam! Thanks Time Warner!

    Update: 09/30/06

Service still as good as what I signed up for. Lost some points on the rating because I was trying to get International Calling unblocked, and it was a hassle. They assured me that it was unblocked, when it was blocked. Whatever, less money for them. Also, the website only allows you to see long distance calls, not all calls like other. Lost some points on value for money because others offer more feature and website rich services. Still sticking with them because of call quality and the fact that the VoIp never touches my internet bandwidth, which is a great plus, difference between a clear and choppy call. Thanks TWC, now get me On Screen caller ID and 3-way calling, and fix your website!

    Update: 11/04/08

Everything is still working as it should. It appears as if Time Warner has heard my pleas, as they have implemented On-Screen Caller-ID and 3-Way Calling. Downtime has been VERY minimal, if any.

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable
Initial install was fast. I ended up with a new cable modem (Arris TM402G). You can buy and install up to two battery backups for the modem. Although I have not looked into this yet.

The first day upon hook up, I had a problem where I could here the person on the other line but, they couldn't here me. I called TWC and they explained to me that it takes up to 72 hours for provisioning (the seperation of the line from the previous phone company). I have had no problems since.

I see no difference in phone quality what so ever. It's as if nothing changed. All in all I am satisfied with the service. I do wish they would offer call blocking though.

    **UPDATE** June 7th, 2006.

Smooth sailing all the way. No problems what so ever.

    **UPDATE** October 29th, 2008.

I no longer have a TWC package since moving.

I have had the VOIP for 3 years now, other then the loss of service during a power outage, I have really no complaints about it. I got VOIP/Digital Phone with a triple play package. The price for all of it started at 132.00 and is now at 140.00 I can't complain about that either,, Over All I try to recommend TW triple play to people looking for decent priced service.

This is part of the bundled telephone, internet and cable package. The service and response has been dismal. The cable was out for 3 months, VOIP phone experienced frequent (once a week) outage. Sometimes it resets within a few minutes, other times it's out for hours. Everytime Time Warner schedules an 8am-8pm all day appointment for me to be around to fix it. Out of the 9 appointments, they only showed up 3 times.

The best one was when we called to check on the appointment status - the Time Warner customer service read the notes the technician had put into the system: "Showed up for appointment at 12:16pm, no one home." When asked what time it was RIGHT NOW - the customer service person replied: "12:10pm - Oh, I guess I should get them to go back out there." The guy never showed up.

Terrible customer service in person and on the phone. We'd dumping them. Never again.

Due to TW dragging their feet on HDTV upgrades, I've decided to try U-verse, and TW's VOIP is just way way too pricey when not bundled with both TV and internet. They could also stand to include voicemail in the price, and add some higher end features. All that said, this phone service was just as reliable and clean as my POTS. No QoS/internet routing headaches.

    Original Review:

I switched to Road Runner from DSLExtreme and have been quite pleased with the increased performance. Given that I'm going to stick with cable, I figured I'd look into my VOIP options.

We aren't heavy phone users by any means. But out of the few calls I make, they seem to be just outside of what SBC/AT&T considers a local phone call. Plus, I am a stickler for Caller ID and Call Waiting ID. I will not take a call unless I know who it is. The calls I do make, I need them to be high in quality. I walk people through computer stuff all the time, and that demands a clean, clear, problem free line. Though I don't use it much, those needs result in a bill that is just too high from SBC/AT&T. I have cell service here but it's too marginal to go cell only.

I considered Vonage or SunRocket, but I really don't need unlimited national calling. I also tend to be a heavy data user and having used plenty of Internet VOIP based products in the past, I know the sorts of nonsense that can happen if QoS isn't set up properly. Plus, news about Verizon's lawsuit against Vonage got me worried and I didn't want to trust my important communications to a relatively unknown outfit like Sunrocket. Boy I'm glad I went with my gut.

Time Warner's California Unlimited phone product suits me PERFECTLY. After multi-product discounts, it's $25 per month.

I ported my number. The installation was painless as can be. The day of the installation, when the installer arrived, my AT&T landline was taking calls. By the time he left, my new Digital Phone service was taking them. He replaced my Ambit modem with an Arris Touchstone modem.

Today I needed to fax something out, so I dug up a 56k modem and got it hooked up. Could TW's voip handle faxing? It went out without a hitch! For kicks I tried dialing up Earthlink and got a solid 50k connection. Hell this is better than the POTS line I got from Pacific Bell that could barely hold a 28.8 connection!

About the only thing I can really nitpick at is the price. I think $19/month would be the sweet spot for this. Aside from that it's been wonderful in every respect. Used it for over a month now without the slightest oddity or hint that I'm using anything less than a real telephone line. Not a dropped call. Not a garbled voice to another landline. Happy!

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable
I recently added digital phone service to qualify for the 'Price Lock Guarantee' promotion of $119 per year for 2 years. I had TW digital phone several years ago and thought the service was excellent but switched to Vonage and then SunRocket because of the cost. When SunRocket bellied up I decided to go cell phone only and have been that way since. With this PLG promotion I am paying only $12 + taxes extra a month for the phone service so I figured I'd give it a try. Here is my experience .....

Installation : disappointed in the quality of the installer as it turns out he was a plug and play type at best. He could not figure out the user ID / password for the cable modem and just gave up. It was apparent he was not very experienced at digital phone installation. When he left I googled and located the user id and password for my cable modem and saw where my downstream and upstream power levels were not adequate (thanks to the dsl forum). I called and scheduled for a technician to come out a few days later. He was able to make changes and bring the levels up to where they should have been.

Customer Service : I have had to contact customer service on several occasions since this new service was installed. I had problems accessing the digital phone web site and my on-screen caller ID was not activated from their end (had to call for each one of my TV's separately). On each occasion I have had wait times of between 20 and 35 minutes to speak to someone. This is just not acceptable in my book. You sell me a service but don't want to adequately staff your help desk. Out of desperation I even tried their on-line 'Chat' help. What a joke that was. I feel sure I was 'Chatting' with someone in India (their terminology was exactly like that of all the other outsourced help desks ... the only difference was I was reading instead of listening). This was a total waste of time and I even had to load some activeX crap to get it to work.

Bottom Line: I have 2 months to opt out before it would cost me to terminate the PLG package. As much as I like the quality of the digital phone service at this rate it really scares me what will happen if I experience problems in the future. My Cable TV and RoadRunner service have been rock solid for years and maybe the bundled package will stay that way. Glad I have a while to let my disappointment and anger subside before I have to make a finial decision.
