I didn't get too screwed in the whole SR fiasco. I actually got 1 year out of the 15 months that I was supposed to get, so only loosing 3 months (which hopefully VT will give me credit for) wasn't as bad as some people. I actually recommended a buddy of mine to sign up, and I think he only got 4 months out of his 1 year contract before it all happened, so that sucked. Even when I went to the website to call forward my SR# to my new VT#, it appeared as if you could still buy services...what a joke. Someone should pay for the lack of communication during this fiasco.

When it was up and running, I really liked the service. I had a couple tech issues over the year, but those were either RR related or SR was able to fix easily over the phone. Once in a while I had to reset the Gizmo, but nothing I'm not used to with the Cable modem as well.

In the end, it sucks they went under and I'd be very worried about this new company taking their place....but in the meantime, I jumped to VT and 3 days on VT and I'm happy....so maybe something good will come of this...I found a new Voip provider.

Hopefully all the SR employees (at least the little guys) can find new jobs...screw the big wigs who ran this thing into the ground.

    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
    ORIGINAL REVIEW (updates below)

I have decided to switch to SunRocket from Vonage. They have all of the features of Vonage and are literally 1/2 the price of what I am paying Vonage. I initiated a number port from Vonage to SunRocket on 3/5. We'll see how long that takes!!! SunRocket's gizmo and free phone arrived and were working perfectly in 3 days from order. So far so good. Let's hope the number ports. Updates to come...

****UPDATE 3/19/06 -- I received an email from Sunrocket stating that my number port will be complete on 3/31/06. That is 26 calendar days from when I initiated the port request from Vonage. As far as call quality goes, I get an occasional time where there is no dial tone, but I think that had to do with an issue from my IP which is now fixed. As I start to use it more when my number ports, I'll be able to tell better about the reliability. Still, so far so good!**************

****UPDATE 4/1/06 -- Number porting occurred exactly on time. Service has been fine (much better than Vonage), even through a recent "widespread" outage. This company's slogan is that it is the "no gotcha" phone company. However, I am currently on hold for 120 minutes (lowered tech support rating) to remove the temporary number from my account that was assigned while I waited a month for the number port. This removal does not automatically happen when your number ports, and if you do not call to remove it, they will charge you $3 a month for the extra number. Gotcha... *************

****UPDATE 4/2/06 -- Got disconnected yesterday after waiting on hold for 2 hours. I sent an email to customer service and had a reply within 12 hours. I will email rather than call in the future!*********

****UPDATE 6/18/06 -- Service has been relatively stable. When the sound gets garbled or disconnected, a reboot of the modem and gizmo fix it. It seems like I need to restart everything about once a week. Still a small price to pay considering the overall cost and features we have! I'm keeping all the ratings the same, except I am lowering Reliabilty to a 3. I would still recommend this service. ****************

****UPDATE 7/25/06 -- Service has been steadily declining in reliability. We have not been able to make a call over the past two weeks without getting garbled or disconnected at some point. Resetting the modem no longer works. I sent an email to customer service two days ago and have received no reply. Both reliability and tech support ratings are being lowered. What good is a phone line if you cannot use it?***************

****UPDATE 9/9/06 -- After approximately 12 emails back and forth with CS and about as many phone calls, 6 weeks passed with no improvement. Finally, level two techs issued me a new gizmo. Everything is working smoothly now. I am not happy that it took 6 weeks to resolve my issue.***************

****UPDATE 2/22/07 -- I have had no problems other than needing an occasional reboot or having a dropped call. I will sign on for year number 2 if this reliability continues. $17/mo is worth it. I would still recommend a cell phone or land line as a back up. ***********

****UPDATE 7/14/07 -- Switched over to Verizon Fios after moving. Sunrocket works well behind their router. I called two weeks ago to change my home address to e911 will work here, however, after two more calls, I don't hold much hope that it will actually happen given their recent troubles. I hope this service sticks around! I'm paid through next February! ************

*****UPDATE 7/21/07 -- Well, Sunrocket bit the dust this week. I still have service sporadically and have placed an order with ViaTalk. It has been one week and they still have not shipped my equipment. Let's hope ViaTalk sticks around for the two years I've paid for this time. I put in a credit card dispute with Amex for the Sunrocket charges. Time will tell whether I get that money back... So long Sunrocket. It was cheap while it lasted!*************

    Maybe it's time to admit.....

.....some people just aren't cut out for VoIP

Approaching end of first year with SR and it has saved me a BUNDLE and only occasionally did I notice a lack of connectivity not associated with my ISP service, lightning, tripping over wires etc. Of course, I only talk across the States and the world so maybe I should make some local calls lol On the other hand, I have DSL so I have a local phone service for the shorthaul and those incoming I haven't directed to my two SR numbers one of which is local calling for my stepson a the other end of the States.

Technical support may move around the world depending on the time of day, but I never had to wait too long and always got an answer which proved to be correct. No gotchas.

    Yessir - keep trolling.

I ordered SR back in March, 2005. Not knowing much about VOIP, I researched leading providers and found SR to be the most "appealing." When I received the gizmo, it had a different MAC address than SR had on file. I did not find this out until I played with the gizmo for countless hours, went through level 1 support 5 times ( with empty promises of a call back " in a couple minutes" "you're next in que, it won't be long"). I'll admit, I was ready to give-up..but then finally got a call back 5 days into this initial mess. Ben from SR contacted me and discovered the MAC address problem, and walked me through everything. Since then, I have been very happy with service.

I kept a bare-minimum POTS line for incoming calls, 911, etc., and use the SR for outgoing local and long-distance. With this combo, I am saving ~$38 month ($456 year) on home phone costs compared to using Verizon's (cough cough) "Freedom" plan (NOTE: I also had 2 credits for billing errors, which lowered my overall cost of SR's annual plan). Plus, the feature set is nice. Caller ID is 1/2 way there right now. I can get the number, and at times the name, but not regularly. SR "is actively working on this." I can recognize the number and determine if I want to pick up the phone or not. For this price, the name is a convenience I can live without until it is fixed.

A hot topic with VOIP are outages. I have experienced a handful of outages. Most of the outages did not affect me and if I NEED to make a call, I have a cell-phone. I use SR for residential service, so I am willing to deal with a few hiccups.

Overall, SR has it together, but still needs some polishing on it's customer service and getting said features to work. As I mentioned above, SR opens a "ticket" when there is a problem ( which means you will be waiting for the "call-back")...I personally can't stand it.

That wraps it up for me.

SR = good quality service + a good price.

UPDATE 3/2/07: I was going to switch over to Viatalk after 2 years of service with SR, though with the ATA shipping charges and activation charge, Viatalk's BOGO offer lost it's sheen. So for 2007, I am paying $13.29/month with SR (I called in and got 3 months credit for existing customers) vs. Viatalk's $12.45/month. It was just not worth it for me to switch over. To add, I was told that existing customers can call in to get the BOGO offers applied when they are offered.

I recently redeemed some gift cards from SR and they were shipped UPS, arriving in 3 days. Great turn around time.

The SR service has been stellar for my usage and I still can't complain about the overall service.

UPDATE July 2007 - ...and they're done, out of business and told customers nada. Obviously changes my "review" of them now.

"Sunrocket, the no gotcha phone Company. We are no longer taking sales calls or customer service. Good bye..."

That about sums up the hasty and shady exit of all their higher-ups. The rest of their employees were fired the next day. Sunrocket is dead.

I was informed that calling and getting the cancellation department would probably help me solve my issues, so I did just that- one week later and my caller ID blocking magically starts working So they can have their one point back for tech support.

Update again: Dinged call quality a bit because of nicks and pops I hear in my calls now, and no it's not my ISP I also use traffic shaping in my router, so I know it isn't me. Lowered tech support one because they can't fix my caller ID blocking problem and seem to not understand me very well.

Update: I recieved my two phones, AND an extra phone (total of 3) one week after I noted the error to sunrocket However, I still don't have Caller ID blocking working and I don't believe I ever will, as they keep saying the problem is resolved even though it clearly isn't. Not a big issue for me, but I'm going to dock tech support two, and put one more point into reliability since the phone has never been down when I needed to use it.

Not sure what to dock for the gizmo slowing the net/not getting my phones/caller ID blocking not working, so I just took 2 points off of reliability. However, they apologized and shipped the phones to me after I called and complained, which seems like great support to me (hold time wasn't bad at all). The Gizmo slows my now 9/1 (I get about 10/1 on tests) line to about 2.5/.300, which would normally piss me off a lot, except for the fact that the gizmo works behind my router with 0 issues. It was plug and play, no firewall configuration or port forwarding or screwing with advanced outbound nat on my firewall or anything, worked right away. Call quality is excellent. Can't test inbound caller ID as my current phone doesn't have that.

I called my house a few times to test quality, seemed excellent. This is when I noticed that disabling the caller ID wasn't working, showed my name and number even though I e.had disabled it on their website. I enabled it and disabled it again, but it still wasn't blocking it. I'm sure they'll sort this out though =) Also got to see excellent quality when talking to their support. The guy had a weird accent, I don't remember his name, but he was kind, apologetic, and helpful, which is what I look for in a company's support.

Their website's buttons at the top randomly don't show up. My only browser is firefox, and I'm not testing with IE, however that's why the website lost one point.

All in all, having two phone numbers, free phones (they'll be comin), great call quality, and free long distance, all for this price... This is a great service so far.

Rest in peace, Sunrocket. All told, despite the occassional glitch, the service worked pretty well. The Sunrocket customer website was the best I've seen from a VOIP provider - well-designed and feature-rich with call logs, call blocking features, downloadable voicemail. Gonna miss it.

    -----------------

I've had Sunrocket service for five months now. There were some rough patches initially, with occassional service dropouts, but the reliability has improved greatly after recent system upgrades. The company seems to be pretty upfront and honest about when and why they are performing system upgrades and alerts users with an e-mail beforehand.

I really like the Sunrocket website, which allows you to check voicemail, look at call logs, and block specific numbers.

It's been a smooth ride for the last two months, I'm happy to report. I'm very satisfied at this point and would recommend the service to anyone who is value conscious and wants to avoid paying an arm and a leg for phone service.

    ----------------------------------------------

    OLD REVIEW:

I currently get my phone service from my cable company. I pay monthly fees as follows: $19.99 for unlimited local calling, $7 for Caller ID, say $3 in long distance toll charges, and ~$16 in various taxes. So, all told, my phone charges are coming out to roughly $46 a month. It occurred to me one day that this amount was ridiculously high. It's the taxes more than anything else that gets my goat. Other than the 911 charges, they all seem ridiculous. I hit the web and started researching VoIP providers. I settled on Sunrocket because of the consistently positive customer reviews I had read and the free cordless phones they give away to new subscribers.

My equipment arrived I think three days after I signed up on the website. The e-mail with the tracking number for the equipment actually arrived after the equipment did. I set up the Gizmo, as Sunrocket calls it, as follows: Cable modem to Gizmo, Gizmo to Wireless Router. I charged the phones for a day, connected them to the Gizmo, and was good to go. Setting up the equipment is so easy, I believe the Village Idiot could do it.

My service worked right from the get-go, although I believe Sunrocket states that it can take a few days for outgoing calls to work. I've been using the service for two months now. Call quality is excellent; people on the other end cannot tell the difference. Be aware that when you sign up, you can request to transfer your current phone number on the web site, but to initiate the process, you have to go back into your account and fill out a form.

There has only been one service dropout in the time that I've been using SR, and I fixed that by turning the equipment off and back on. I sent one e-mail to builditbetter@sunrocket.com to make a suggestion for their website, and received a prompt response. I haven't dealt with SR's tech support, so I can't comment on that.

Bottom line - the service works well and the price simply cannot be beat. It's great to be able to call friends and family across the country without having to worry about running up a high bill. I talk to people a lot more now around the country. I also can't express how much I enjoy not paying taxes into the government's pocket every month. The free Uniden phones work nicely and are a good bonus. The SR website is well-designed and offers some good account control features. It's nice to have voicemail without needing a machine in your home, as well. All told, I think SR is offering a terrific product for a great price. The marketplace will decide if the company is here to stay, but the product is a keeper.

I am reading the reviews of Sun Rocket with great curiosity for as of Monday July 15th, my phone service with them appears to have vanished. I have no voicemail, calls in ring and I pick up and then I hear nothing on the other end, calls out are hit and miss... I call their 800 number and hear that they are not accepting any calls for new subscribers or technical support. How can some folks review a company saying they just signed up on July 17, 2007 when for all intents and purposes this company seems to be history. I am very confused. i am not sure which section of the country reviews I was reading, but an 800 number and a website do not vary across the country.

SunRocket leaves no message, nothing at all. It cut off voicemail features starting Monday, and then phone line was dead about wednesday. Anyway, I'm left shopping around for another voIP provider, after the sunburn that sunRocket gave me. Too bad its $99 a year hurt even itself financially... if you read my comment below.

    Previous review:

Installation was simple as pie.. connecting the Gizmo to the router that I had (or to the cable modem). Then... a working phone line, like that! I love the voicemail that can email you with messages... that's so cool and useful! and the free phone number that can be in another area code, wow! I've tried Vonage before switching, but Vonage was only slightly better with call quality and reliability. Sunrocket's $99 annual deal has gotten pretty much everyone else in the VOIP industry in trouble -- financially.

I don't know how they can make a profit on only $9 a month while giving unlimited calls to North America, but enjoy it while it lasts! I can't think of any problems except once-in-a-while crackles or pops during conversations and tech support... which puts you on hold for at least 15 minutes. But other than that, it's great.

    Final update 7/18/07

In May of 2006 I had come back for their $10 plan. I just used it for international calls. We have cell phones for local calls. It's a shame that Sunrocket went out of business. Now, I have to look for agood cheap Voip providers like Viatalk or Callcentric.

    update 2/21/06

I cancelled last month since my wife couldn't take the hiccups with the service. I did have a billing issue, but that eventually got resolved. When Sunrocket works, it's a great service. Maybe, I'll come back when VOIP matures a bit more.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------

I signed up on April 9th and I received the Gizmo on April 13th,2005. I hooked up the Gizmo to my router and it worked within a minute. I could make incoming/outgoing calls right away. I like the free Uniden phones they gave me. I initially signed up for the monthly plan ($24.95), but I will switch to yearly ($199) since I save more money that way.

So far, the call quality with this VOIP provider is excellent. People can't tell that I'm calling for my VOIP phone when I place a normal call. Even, my dish network satellite receiver works with sunrocket.

I'm going to transfer my POTS phone from Verizon over to sunrocket. I will always keep a cell phone around for 911 calls though.

I do have DSL on my phone line, but Verizon now offers naked dsl to existing customers. I just want to keep DSL and no Verizon phone line.

I orig had packet8 because at the time there were only a few companies that would offer a Charleston, WV number. Needless to say they were terrible but I didn't want to abandon VOIP so I switched to Sunrocket. The quality increased dramatically using the same speed (3000/256) fastest available in this area at the time. I only had about two outages for 1.5 years where with Packet8 it was out for for 3 days straight before they could fix it. The website has useful features and the setup was quite simple.

Unfortunately it appears that Sunrocket is closing its doors.

It was a good ride while it lasted
