I have used viaTalk for 5mos and, with the exception of one outage, the reliabilty has been superb. Unlike packet8 and Lingo theyuse a Sippur ATA box, which told me that they would not lock me in with equipment that I could not use with another ITSP if was unhappy with the level of service. Inaddition, theyoffer softphone support, which for me is important given I wanted to be able to use X-Pro and SJPhone on my PocketPC. It was no extra cost, like Vonage. I have used Packet8 and Lingo, but for the money and quailty viaTalk, in my opinon, with head and shoulders above.

They have really improved their account managment interface. It was very ugly at first, now it looks great with the simple to use icons.

I trying my hardest to get all my friends to viaTalk. I hope this helps others.

I’ve been with ViaTalk for 6 months now. In the beginning their service offering was good but slightly limited. I chose them because I had my own equipment and didn’t want a long service contract. Since signing up ViaTalk has added more and more features, the most recent included live call recording and free 411 services. Call quality when I joined was good. Now it is even better. I can’t recall the last time a call was dropped. Occasionally I’ll have an echo on the line. Usually when that happens I can trace it back to Cox (not so impressed with them).

All in all this is a good company. I just switched to annual billing which saved me even more money. If you are looking for an inexpensive VoIP carrier with good quality and customer service then I highly recommend trying ViaTalk.

After quite a bit of research, I chose ViaTalk over my next lower choices of My People and Vonage and am absolutely thrilled with my choice.

The Linksys PAP-2 came quickly and I was making calls within 10 minutes of opening the box. Porting the old phone number only took about a week, which was a week and a half less than they warned it would take.

I prepaid for 3 months at $13.95 for 500 minutes. We haven't used over 200 minutes in a month yet, so when I re-up, I'm sure I'll go for the full year prepaid at $11.95 a month! That's less than a third what we were paying Qwest.

We are in the Pacific timezone and the caller ID was coming up in Mountain. Submitting a support ticket had it fixed in under 24 hours.

These guys are adding features all the time, too! For example, they just added free 411, text-message voicemail notification and *1 call recording.

One of my favorite features is the custom caller ID, which lets you put in your own name for any incoming number, so that your friends' cell phone will come up with their name even if their provider doesn't send the name, or you can just give anyone a cute name that will come up on any caller ID in the house. Custom call blocking is really nice, too.

Bottom line, it's a great value for a great service!

I had first tried to subscribe to SunRocket. Thank god they cancelled my service because of some sort of e911 issue. I ordered their equipment and once you have an account with them you play heck trying to talk with someone you can understand. (Sales Canada/Service Phillipines) They outsource customer service to the Phillipines!!!!!!!!

Viatalk has been a pleasure! The setup was simple, I even had responses on how to configure my router (port forwarding) prior to the install. I had an issue with my name not showing on outbound caller ID, however that was solved within a week.

Their sales staff on the phone could answer all my questions. I have used the on-line problem reporting "ticket". I was pleased with their repsonse time to any questions that I have had.

The features offered in the online account management is first rate. In fact they keep adding new cool features weekly. I have not had any outages and the voice quality is as good as my old fashioned land line phone.

I do wish they would throw in one "virtual number" with the basic fees.

I had service with the Vonage guys and had nothing but problems from the start. They had to have a deposit up front...which I never got back when I canceled...then they sent me a bad unit. Which there customer service took 3 days to admit it was their problem. So needless to say it just got worse.

When I started with ViaTalk everything went smooth as silk. From the get go I had it up and running in a matter of seconds with the FREE Linksys phone adapter it was just click in a couple cables, power it up, and start making calls. I have not had a single problem with ViaTalk. Calls are clear and all features work without any problems.

I signed up for 1 year of the 500 minute plan about 6 weeks ago. I switched from Vonage because they couldn't give me a local number. I got the PAP2 in 3 days, plugged it in and was able to make calls within 2 minutes. Once Bell South was out of the picture, I disconnected them from the NID and plugged the PAP2 into a phone jack in the wall. Now I have VOIP throughout the house. Call quality has been very good to excellent. Too many features to mention with more added all the time. Tech support has been quick to respond to a couple of minor issues. The only thing thing that doesn't work is TIVO and I never really expected it to work.

If they can keep up with their growth, ViaTalk will continue to be a great value.

TIVO

I have freinds that use a Linksys USB network adapter that plugs into the TIVO and hits the internet by going out (CAT5) ethernet cable through their router to get menus instead of needing a traditianl phone line.

TIVO

To run a TiVo via VOIP, you will need to purchase an external 14400bps modem and have your original serial port cable provided with your TiVo when you first bought it new. From there, you can configure your TiVo to utilize the serial external modem by changing your dialing properties in your TiVo:

Change line one to: ,(pause button)#319
Change the Call Waiting line to ,(pause button)*70,(pause button) then change the wait for tone option from on to OFF.

I signed with Viatalk a couple of months ago, being fed up with charges for
*everything* from my previous telco. Since then, I have found their service to
be excellent - helpful and timely. The real crunch came last week, though!

I am an Australian living in the USA so the low price of calls back-home were a
big plus to me. Since receiving my adapter, I had made a number of calls to
friends and family. However, when I got my account, I was stunned to see that Viatalk
had charged all the land-line calls to my home city, Perth, at mobile rates!
Australia only has four area- codes and a quick look at the web-site showed that
Viatalk appeared to be listing calls to two of the four (7 and 8) as mobile
calls. This would cover about 2/3 of the continent - and probably half the
population. Clearly, in my mind, something had gone horribly wrong!

My first call to Viatalk service was not too encouraging. I was told that the
account was correct, and that all these (land-line) calls were actually being
routed via mobile towers. My arguments that this meant that about half of the
phones in Australia were being considered as 'mobile' phones seemed to be
falling on deaf ears.

However, customer service did agree to look further, and shortly after called me
and confirmed that in their opinion, the account was, indeed, correct (and note
that a normal call is about 3c/min vs some 20c/min to a mobile - a 7 times
surcharge!). Well, I was not taking this lying down, so I asked for it to be
reviewed again. I think pointing Viatalk at some of their competitor's websites,
where charges to Australian area codes 7 and 8 were clearly land-line rates
seemed to strike a chord. At least, I got a "hmmm...does look like you might
have something here".

I followed this call with an email, showing the comparative rates charged by a
number of other VoIP providers, plus a link to the Australian Government
regulator showing the extent of the Australian numbering scheme. In turn, I
quickly received an email back from Customer Service saying that Viatalk would
investigate, and reply after the weekend.

Well, the good news is that Customer Service called me on Monday morning and
admitted they had made a mistake. There was indeed an error in their call rate
database, and this had also translated into their web prices and their billing
system. My credit card was immediately refunded the overcharge, and I also
received thanks for bringing the error to Viatalk's notice.

I consider that to be excellent customer service. Sure, initially, they were
suspicious, but they were prepared to listen to a reasoned argument;
they quickly investigated the situation; discovered their error, and - here's the great
thing! - unequivocally admitted their mistake and rectified it immediately!

Thanks, Viatalk! You've got one very happy customer, and confirmed my belief in
the benefits of excellent, thoughtful and receptive customer service.

January 2006

I just wish to add a real kudos to Viatalk for service that has been exemplary. I recently made a two month trip to Australia and needed to have my US phone number available whilst I was there. The Viatalk team were great! They unblocked my Australian IP address to allow the adapter to work, and were then extremely patient as my Australian ISP made numerous arbitary changes to that address! Generally, a change in address was unblocked within a couple of hours of Viatalk receiving an email from me. The service worked perfectly and was a huge cost and time saver to me. During my time in Australia, my local phone service died, and for a while I was using the Viatalk service as a "local" phone - it being considerably cheaper to make calls from the "USA" back to Australia than using a local cell phone! It worked perfectly, and no-one realised that a call was going physically from Australia to the US and back again to maybe 100 metres down the street. Fabulous.

Thanks Viatalk - it couldn't have been better.

We signed up for Via Talk online and it was quick and easy. Received our equipment and had it hooked up with dial tone in less than 10 minutes!

They have lots of great features. We especially like custom inbound caller ID, so you can program cell calls and others with what we want our caller ID displays to read out! Lots of bells and whistles all included in the basic price. They also include all taxes and other charges in the basic price.

Their customer service is in the USA, so you can easily understand one another.

Call quality has been very good. No issues or complaints.

Order went well. The one thing I would change if I were Via:Talk is the order processing. The confirmation e-mail does not itemize what you just bought and the order success page does not either. You are shown the total and no idea what you just purchased. Minor, but would add a lot to the experience. The web site says 2 free months, but no info on that in the purchase success window or the confirmation. Sales did answer my questions quickly though.

The customer service ticket system worked great for me. Large part of why I chose them. Answers within 24 hours, if service remains this way now that I have bought in, I will be happy.

The increased value for committing to more months of the service, nice.

I have cable broadband. Nothing to it, hooked the ATA to the free spot on my router plugged it in to the AC then plugged in an available phone and bingo, phone service. I can even dial 7 digits for calls in my area code.

Good suggestion.

I think that's a great suggestion. Hope ViaTalk reads this!

They definitely need a more thorough receipt/purchasing system, it is very barebones right now, but like you said, the people there are amazing. 24 hour guaranteed response, etc. is a great way to run the business on a human level.

Great review!
