Having used / subscribed to both Bell DSL (including FTTN) and Rogers Hi-Speed (DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0) services in Toronto, I can honestly say that TekSavvy is really the best ISP one can use if their services are available to you.
Performance is always great and on the rare occasion that there are any issues, the TekSavvy staff are available to answer questions both here on dslreports.com and via their support lines. Staff is very responsive and, knowledge wise, is the best ISP support staff I've ever dealt with.
- Reasonable usage and speeds for reasonable amounts - Reasonable overage policy - IPv6 beta service - Excellent peering to everywhere on the internet (8ms pings to google.ca) - Netflix Super HD / OpenConnect
You can't go wrong!

Aug 21, 2012
I first heard about TekSavvy in 2011 when they voiced their opposition to the UBB changes that were passed (and then scrapped). I wasn't looking for an ISP at the time, but kept them in mind, as I appreciated their activity in fighting for online rights.
When planning a move to a new condo in Scarborough I opted for TS's DSL 12 Lite (12 Mb down, 1 Mb up, and 75 GB/month) service for $39.99/month.
It appears I caught it before it was phased out - I placed my order on Aug 9 to have it installed on the 20th and today I no longer see the option on their website.
After doing some searching, it looks like I caught a lucky break!
Existing DSL 12 customers are getting free upgrades to 15 Mb with grandfathered rates:
»[DSL] Good News - DSL upgrades
Since I was moving into a high population neighbourhood (huge apartment buildings at Alton Towers), I decided on DSL over cable, thinking the potential of many people using cable in my area could slow my Internet speed. I didn't plan on using normal phone service (instead going with VOIP), so would be using dry loop (which costs an additional $9.10/month in my area - Band Rate B). Total monthly cost is $55.47 (tax included). I don't watch TV, so cost of cable or other options didn't factor into my decision (I don't know if packages offered through Rogers or Bell would have been better with Internet bundled).
I had a few questions about the service so ordered over the phone. Only thing of note was the long series of disclaimers the poor rep had to read to me at the end. If I knew that was coming, I would have ordered online after getting my questions answered.
I requested a time in the afternoon on the 20th and was told 1 or 2 technicians (she couldn't tell me for sure how many technicians would be coming) would be dropping by between 12PM and 9PM. Since this was a large span of time, I asked if there was any way of finding out when they might be arriving - there wasn't, so I made plans to spend the day (I hadn't moved in yet but had lots to do at the condo, so didn't mind).
On the 20th, I received a call at 12 PM from a TSI tech, who said he would be arriving in about 20 minutes. 10 mins later, a technician from Bell showed up - he plugged a device into a phone jack to verify Internet was available and was out within 5 minutes. 5 minutes later, TS's tech arrived, who verified the Internet speed (and would have configured the modem, but I had previously done that - I didn't try the modem before they arrived because I got there a few minutes before 12).
I have no experience with their tech support so far (though since I've worked in IT, I can do some troubleshooting myself, if something comes up) and not enough time has passed to evaluate the connection reliability. I'll update those scores in the future.
Aug 30, 2012
Speed test results (using SpeedTest.net, connecting to a Toronto server): 12.13 Mbps down 0.69 Mbps up
Right after it was set up, my download speed was around 10.xx Mbps (it had around the same upload speed - 0.6x Mbps), so it looks like the 15 Mbps speed upgrade has been applied.
To measure reliability, I've been doing continuous pings to websites (to see if there were brief outages when I was not using the computer) and noticed that I lose packets on very rare occasions (4 lost over 6 hours with 22167 packets sent on the last test) - so rare that it hasn't been noticeable when I've been using the Internet (including playing online games, though it's possible that I wasn't playing at the time when a packet was lost). I've seen packets drop while looking at the ping display, and so far only one packet has dropped at a time (I haven't seen 2 or more drop consecutively). This happened at my old location as well (which had Internet with Rogers Cable).
March 9, 2013
Increased the "connection reliability" score (from 50% to 100%) as I've had no downtime since signing up.
SpeedTest.net: Download speed - 14.57 Mbps (been upgraded to the 15 Mbps service) Upload speed - 0.67 Mbps
I've never had a problem to report, so can't speak for tech support quality.

This supplier does everything he can, but Bell impose stupid rules. For example, when I moved, they forced me to spend a day at home while the service was already running! The technician knocked at the door, I told him that it worked for several days, he's gone! A day lost!
The service is stable and reliable. It is easy to reach a human for support and they are effective in solving problems.
They offer a lot of options, but the option price is high.
I'm happy to encourage a independent supplier who defends consumers and their freedoms on the Internet.

When the new speeds were brought to my attention admittedly, I went, yeah right. Ill believe it when I see it. Well, I see it. WOW. very very nice. I do VOIP so for me any upload beyond 1 Mb is great. I am on the 25Mb down and 7Mb up package and I actually get it. I keep checking speed test to see if I really get it. Peak times didn't matter either. Love it so far.
My only negative is that I'm a business, I'm not here after 5pm. So a 5pm to 9pm install will not work. This is mandatory, and that's fine, but why cant they come out before 5? This will not be a problem for residential users, but for me, it was not ideal.
There were some serious issues with Bell's wiring into the building, but I cannot fault TekSavvy for that. They went above and beyond answering all my questions and making things work for me quickly with my static IP and subnets.
Will I recommend them again? Oh yes, am I happy of course I am. I will also be switching to this at home. Still a better price than Rogers or Bell.

Contract price not specified. "connection drops, horrible coordination" "looking for new isp"
| Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings below consensus)

I have been with TekSavvy for some time now, at first on DSL 6. I was experiencing horrible connection and constant connection drops..(or lag), so we decided to switch to DSL 15 to see if that would make a difference in speeds.
I tried to upgrade through the portal available on the site and found out that it said there was some issue so I called in to make the upgrade. The lady that picked up the call seemed a bit skeptical at the fact that I was unable to do it online, even though I told her I've tried multiple times. She then processed my order and informed me that a technician will be coming in Feb 15.
Couple days before the date, I received an email with information regarding my NEW TekSavvy account with a new username and password, which I was informed I could keep my old account because I was merely doing an upgrade. I called in and was told to disregard the email after explaining the situation because my upgrade was put in as a new order, instead of an upgrade.
The technicians show up on Feb 15 and end up leaving saying that they could not figure out what was going on with the wiring. I call in later on during the day and was told that my service was completed and when I explained that I was still receiving the same speeds, they told me it would be up after midnight. After midnight, same speeds, called in again, was informed that the technicians will need to come in once again. The technicians were rebooked for Feb 22 and I called to confirm that they would be coming on that day and was told they would be because they have been scheduled.
Feb 22, technicians are a no show between the said time of 12-9, called in once again, and was told that the appointment was on confirmed on the Bell end...despite the fact I called to confirm the fact previously. When asked why I was not informed of this, no straight answer, just circular reasoning. The appointment was rebooked for Feb 25 and I was told that I would receive a call confirming the appointment and not a word. I called in on Feb 24 and the person on the phone called Bell and said that there are techs scheduled for the next day.
Feb 25...surprise...no show once again after waiting from 12-9. Called in yet again to be informed that they do not know why the technicians did not show up but I will receive a call back when they find out. The person tried to schedule another appointment for the techs to be dispatched but after the previous two dates of having to book off work to accommodate a bunch of no shows, I refused.
I am waiting to hear back on what is going on but in the mean time I am looking for other ISPs, since my patience is beginning to run out with this one. Definitely regret recommending TekSavvy to friends and colleagues.

Contract price not specified. Telus "Great service once hooked up" "pre-install could have been a bit better" "A great alternative to Telus"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)
|
After the latest fiasco with Telus changing their DSL terms, I decided to change ISPs after being with Telus since the mid 90s. I discovered Teksavvy on these very forums and thought I'd give them a try. I went to their online tool to check for service which it said was available, so I then went into the Direct forums to qualify.
This is where the first issue against Teksavvy comes in - at first during qualification they told me it wasn't actually available which was disappointing. However, I received a PM the day after stating it was. So, I went back and set up the service. Not a biggie, but still.
I called Teksavvy and got a friendly helpful customer service rep. I immediately set up an online payment with my bank and put down my first month payment, install, and bought the Zyxel modem-router. We scheduled the install date to commence with my Telus cancellation which was approx 6 days away at this point.
Issue 2 - The day of my install, I still didn't have any service by late in the afternoon. Concerned, I followed up with Teksavvy and they said they screwed up - they made an error on my address for Telus so Telus rejected the install. Sigh. They apologized and set up a new installed date for the following week and said they'd stay on top of it. I was not happy about this, but what can you do.
Issue 3 - After a lack of follow ups as the day got close, I messaged them and got a confirmation from a support person. Then, I got a message saying it was rejected AGAIN because of an incorrect land line ph# - Teksavvy gave Telus my cell/daytime contact # instead of my landline.
I was unhappy at this point. However, Teksavvy without my asking escalated my concerns to a senior rep that was actually able to arrange a new install date a day earlier than the one that was just rejected. When that day came, it went off without a hitch. Telus completed the install early afternoon.
Since then, I have been very happy with my connection. I am on the 25/2 unlimited DSL plan and get about 23/2.8 so I am pleased and get what basically amounts to the same speeds as my old Telus plan.
At this point, it's been a week with no problems. I am also very happy with the Teksavvy sourced Zyxel router/modem. I will probably come back at future dates to amend/add on to this review as appropriate.
But so far, Teksavvys product is excellent. Once you're hooked up, you should be good to go.

However, once those were squared away, I could not be happier with the Qos and throughput.
Three months on and everything is running fine; not a hiccup from the Zyxel modem. -- MB --

The price was again and huge factor for me. I'm paying $48 for 25meg internet. I'm looking forward to their ipv6 enhancements. Currently we can only pull a single ip off a common /64 shared with the rest of teksavvy west customers.
I would also like to say I love their customer service. My questions have always been answered quickly in the direct and regular forums.

$70 per month about 7 days "Very fast upload and download" "Modem reboots" "Not worth the hassle"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)
|
The install process went smoothly with the exception of the Bell contractor telling me that there was only one technician coming, when in fact a second was scheduled for the evening. It took several calls to technical support over a two week period to get the second technician to come out to install the filter.
The modem provided by Bell currently has reboot issues. It will spontaneously reset from every hour to every couple of days. Not so much of an issue except if you are on a VOIP phone call or VPN'ed into work. From what has been learned it has to do with firmware 1.0.4.4R3WH. After a month Bell sent a tech with a different firmware that was very stable. One month after that my modem has been patched remotely to the defective firmware.
Details of the issue are located here: »[DSL] Cellpipe random reboots / loss of sync (Check logs please?
Once this gets resolved I would definitely recommend the service.
Update: 6 months later the issue is still not resolved. Teksavvy is selling this service with no disclaimer on the issue. Updates are few and far between and largely turn out to be inaccurate.
Update: Reboot issue was fixed in July. Bell patched the faulty Cellpipes, but are also now sending out Sagemcom modems.
Update: From July to January the service was stable and reliable. Then there was a Bell technician broke my wiring in the Bell networking box. Calling Teksavvy a ticket was opened with Bell and a repair was made the next day. However speeds after the repair were inconsistent and my line stats became very poor. Monday Feb 11th called Teksavvy. They had me reboot my modem and tested the line stats. They were poor but I was getting adequate speed. They advised me to call back if the issue persisted. Called again that evening and another call was placed and a Bell ticket was opened to look at the line again and the Teksavvy agent added a modem swap to a more recent modem. Bell closed the ticket 1/2 hr later after shipping the modem, but not fixing the line. Another call was placed with Teksavvy. Waited in the queue, call answered, I was authenticated and the call was dropped. Called again and was advised to wait for the new modem before opening a ticket. Modem arrived, same poor line stats. Sent an email asking for a Bell technician. Received email asking to accept the terms of a Bell tech service call. Accepted terms on Friday at 10 am. No response was received by 7 pm Saturday. Signed up for alternate internet with Rogers and cancelled Teksavvy. Received a response a 9 pm asking if I still wished a Bell ticket initiated.
Bottom line: Although Teksavvy may be polite and offer good rates the process of resolving network or hardware issues from their suppliers leaves much to be desired. The lack of feedback or responsiveness to the modem reboot issue left a sour taste. (If you say you will know more in a week, even if you have nothing to report, please inform us). Having spent 3 hours on the phone for the last week of service trying to get a Bell tech dispatched was the last straw. On my last day of service I was getting 1.04 Mb/s DL and 1.16 Mb/s UL with a ping of 207 ms. while paying $79.20 a month with the hardware rental, dry loop, and taxes included.

 | | | no surprise It's no surprise you had no response in 6 months. Teksavvy sucks, their staff is totally incompetent and incapable of making any decisions without referring to non-existent managers that you are never able to speak to.
I dealt with these morons once. I had a prepaid service. That's "Prepaid" and they started sending me collection warnings and threatened to cancel my "PREPAID" service. Their staff was beyond incompetent when trying to explain to them that "I have already paid, how can you cancel this?" The incompetence and stupidity was beyond belief, I just ended up cancelling my service and it came as no surprise, they continued to try and bill me, even though I wasn't even a client. You just can't fix stupid!
Totally avoid this company, there are much better, more competent companies to deal with.
I work in I.T. and tell every client I encounter to never deal with them, I have also pulled any client with them and switched them over.
You can get much better deals on DSL without the caps. | |

I can understand you were frustrated with the issues that occurred between you & TekSavvy, but your situation is in no reflection as to how all customers get treated. I would hope that I could look at your account & see what you are referring to as it does seem as a very unfortunate situation.
