I run a small office. Prior to the beginning of this nightmare everything was running smoothly. We got our cable/internet bill from the cable company and our phone bills from the phone company. For some strange reason I was getting two phone bills for each of our lines so in a effort to consolidate our bills I decided to switch to FIOS.

Because we have both and alarm system and a credit card machine the Verizon rep said they were keeping our voice lines as copper but were sending out a technician to install the ONT for the internet and cable. No big deal its still one bill, so its OK. The tech came over at the appointed time. We had a specific location where we wanted the router and ONT installed but he ignored our request and put the install at a location that I knew would create a wireless black hole. No problem they would hard wire my office computer, so I thought. Eight hours later the tech said he was done, I asked him about running Ethernet to the computer. All he said was "its working because I have a wireless signal". I tried to connect the office computer through the wireless card and all I got was "limited or no connectivity". His final words were "call tech support". After moving the router around I did manage to connect to the internet. A week later I came in and could not connect. Same error message. So I called tech support. When punched in my phone number for service I was connected not to FIOS support but to the copper support because they did not switch my voice lines over to optical. After about 20 minutes I got in the queue for FIOS. They could not help much since the computer in question was not able to connect to the network so no remote assistance could be offered. After much conversation they agreed to send out a tech to hard wire my connection. The tech came out the next day and basically told my wife that he was not going to run cable because the installation was complete and we do have a signal. He said that my Linksys wireless card, which I have used successfully in over 30 computer builds was junk. He installed a "Verizon approved" USB wireless adapter and left. Well even with the "Verizon approved" adapter my signal is intermittent. Some times it connects sometimes it does not. I have to power cycle the router and computer several times before it gets an IP address. Monday I'm going to call and get the FIOS taken out and hopefully the cable company will be able to restore my service that day.

    My Other Reviews·Optimum Online
I moved, called and had FiOS installed in May 2009...
The install tech was great and knew what he was doing. He wired everything by going though my attic so there are NO wires through out the house which is awesome!! By far, the best and cleanest install I've ever had. A cable tech quite simply does not compare..
The internet is def way faster than my cable was. The router is a great plus as well.
The T.V. is awesome as I have every channel and am paying less then when I had Optimum with no "premium channels", go figure
The phone... is just a phone lol..

I will update later if anything changes... but for now I am happy as a clam..
Getting what I am paying for..

    My Other Reviews·RCN CABLE
This review is reverse-chronological. Go to the bottom for install and the top for the latest.

    7/2/09 - Upgraded Internet Speed

More as a result of the Docsis3.0 invasion into Fios territory than a few of us wailing about being "limited" to 20/5, Verizon now has new, higer internet speed tiers. For $10 more/month (from 99.99 to 109.99) I now have 25/15 and Showtime and a couple of other movie channels. I've done a speed test several times since upgrading and it is consistently coming in at 26/22, much more than the advertised 25/15. I absolutely LOVE the new upload speed, it has revolutionized several aspects of my daily life on the computer!

I have not received the bill yet, so fingers are crossed....

5/9/09 - Unable to upgrade my internet service

When I first signed up for the service, nearly 2 years ago now, I signed up for the 20/5 internet service with TV. When I added phone to my plan in October of 2007, I upgraded my internet to the 20/20 service and still had it as part of my triple play. It cost about $10/month more to have 20/20 vs 20/5. When I rebundled to a new Triple Play package in 2008, the 20/20 went back to 20/5. It is completely impossible to have a triple play of 20/20, Phone and TV. In order to get 20/20 at this point, I would have to cancel my triple play, incur an early termination fee for each service of $179, bundle JUST the phone and TV and pay for 20/20 a la carte. Instead of being a $10/mo upgrade, it would DOUBLE my bill. I have escalated this issue all the way to the office of the president of Verizon, and no one will allow me to bundle 20/20. It was apparently decided by "Marketing" sometime in 2008, that 20/20 does not need to be a bundled service. I just can't believe that I am WILLING to give a company more $$ per month for something (within reason) and they will not take it.

On the positive side, billing has been great--only once in the past year was there an errant charge. I called it in and it was fixed for the next bill. The services continue to be 100% rock solid. I have BBR monitoring my IP and my internet has never once been down.

4/11/08 - Well, it was nice while it lasted

I had a wonderful 2 whole months where my bill was correct. I got a bill this month that was all messed up. For some reason, unknown to anyone, I got bumped off the two year contract and into a month to month contract, which negates all bundle discounts. My bill was over by $100 this month. I suppose 2 months out of 8 with a correct bill is a 25% success rate--better than 0%. I was beginning to enjoy the extra 2 hours each month I got back when I did not have to call Verizon. Oh well. Back to the drawing board. I lowered Tech Support to a 3, because billing is not an option. I have never had to call Tech Support because all my services are rock solid. It's just the billing that so incredibly bad, it is becoming comical.

    2/16/08 - HOLY CRAP, I HAVE A CORRECT BILL

Although I did not in a million years expect it, I just received a bill which combines all my services (voice, internet, cell and TV) into one lovely price. They got it right, folks. It took since August of 2007, but they got it right. I do not need to block off an hour or two to call customer service this week. I can change my avatar tagline from "Awaiting Correct Vzn bill since Aug 07" to "VZN GOT MY BILL RIGHT!"

    WOOOO!

Can you believe I'm really happy about getting a bill for over $200? I can't believe it either. It feels as if I just gave birth. Oh, the euphoria....

    1/18/08 - BILLING/GUIDE 2.0 UPDATE:

I finally received a bill which combines all my Verizon services (Phone, Internet, TV, Wireless) into one bill. However, because of the "non-payment" fracas last month, there was a $199 "early termination" charge as well as a $29.97 "activation" fee when they turned the internet back on. Other than almost passing out when I opened a bill for $605, and the extra charges, things seem to be in order finally. I called the billing department, was put on hold for 25 minutes and disconnected. I called back and the second CSR took care of everything. I was able to go online and create an account. I paid my bill with no issues

The FiOS TV 2.0 Guide arrived yesterday. I honestly think that it is a bit faster than 1.0 and certainly more pleasant to look at. The main hang is when you call up the Guide the first time. That takes about 4 seconds and gets you to press the button three times wondering why it is not reacting. Once the guide is up, it is faster. I still long for the day we get "page up/down" buttons on the remote. All my DVR recordings were intact and organized in a better way.

    1/8/08 - BILLING UPDATE:

Well, all the stories about Verizon's billing department(s) are true. It has been 6 months since install and I have yet to receive one correct bill. In fact, I have not been able to pay my bill for the past two months because they are billing my services to the wrong phone number. After several phone calls and hours on hold bouncing around to 15 different departments, nothing was resolved. My issue was "escalated". My internet service was turned off for a day and after another round of phone calls, was restored. I still have not received a bill and I cannot see or pay anything on my online bill. I suppose someday they'll figure it out. I am just growing weary of calling them about the same problem and having no resolution. Every time they try to fix something with the bill they are unable to help because another department deals with this. They play "pass the customer" and I sit in awe that this great company cannot do anything on the back end without a running into itself.

Still, it's a great service--internet has never been down (except that one day for "non-payment") and the TV is great. We added a landline a while back to take advantage of the bundle discount. I think that's what started this mess. Their system can handle someone adding services to an existing landline, but not the other way around.

Bottom line--the service and price are still worth the billing aggravation. Just realize it will take you a while to straighten out the bill. The CSR's are accommodating, you just have to be persistent.

    11/2/07 UPDATE:

I upgraded to the 20/20 internet service and added a landline yesterday. Everything is still BLAZING fast and rock steady. The HDTV channel line-up could use some work, but they promise to have 150 stations by the end of '08. Let's see if they do it!

    Background and price:

We were lucky enough to move into an area that has FiOS internet and TV service available. We signed up for the 20/5 internet and Fios TV Premier level with a DVR box and a regular set top box. The total cost per month is supposed to be $97. There is a one time $19.99 activation fee. There are no taxes on the plan since it is considered "data services." Their phone service is only $7/mo, but when you add all the taxes that come with a landline, you end up closer to $30. We hooked up our Sunrocket Voip to the Verizon router and all is well and it works well. (Since Sunrocket is down, we've switched to ViaTalk which works just as well).

    Presale info:

As soon as I heard that we could get Fios in our new residence, I called Verizon. Their pre-sale info was right on with what the website said. The rep was very helpful and took time to explain everything. I scheduled the install for 6/25/07.

    Install:

Verizon called twice before the install to confirm that we would be present and have a power outlet near the ONT. The installer came at 10:15 during an 8-11 window. He brought the fiber line in from the street first. Then, he very professionally installed the ONT and UPS in the basement and wired the rest of the house for TV and internet. The Verizon wireless router provided is excellent and covers the whole house with an encrypted signal. It took him 6 hours.

    Impressions (so far):

The download and upload on the internet tests at 20.6/4.6. The connection is lightning with no wobbles in service so far. The TV service is excellent. Crystal clear picture with a fantastic DVR menu.

    Bottom Line:

Get it if you can! If you can't--call and bug them!!!

At this point verizon owes me $$$$$ for my time

FIOS may be great but Verizon totally sucks.I am WILLINGLY giving up my FIOS connection just because verizons customer service and billing are so terrible they outweigh the goodness of the connection itself.

I'm not even going to go into a(nother) rant but I would strongly urge anyone even remotely considering getting FIOS to do a google for something like- verizon billing or verizon customer service or verizon sux my dead grannys pet monkeys nutz and you'll see what I mean.

You have to either be prepared to pay whatever random amount they bill you for or you have to be ready to spend dozens of hours fighting with their customer support only to finally admit defeat.

They have perfected the art of customer service- make the experience so bad, so horribly unpleasant that the customer eventually learns it is hopeless and doesn't try anymore.

Some customers accept this and some go elsewhere.I assume thay have thought about it an decided that the # of customers who pay their false, overinflated bills will make up for the customers they lose.

One day it will come to light, there will be a class action lawsuit that makes a bunch of lawyers happy a couple mid level managers will get canned and the profits will keep rolling in.

Have you considered the possibility that since Keller, Texas is the cradle of FIOS what you experince may be the exception, not the norm?

Do any kind of google about FIOS service- all these people aren't making this up and it's just the tip of the iceseidenberg.

I had great service in Rowlett too.
Where did I say that the complaints are not valid?
I'm simply saying that more people complain than praise, and relating that I have had four installs that went well and have had equally good luck with support.
Edit: changed "3 installs" to "4 installs". Forgot about the TV...

I'm in Rowlett too, service is great unless you make changes to anything, including and especially voice. I had a billing nightmare for months that was eventually resolved after multiple calls each month. Each time I was assured the problem was handled only to get the next months bill which was totally screwed up. As I said, eventually resolved, but after much time on phone and frustration.

I spent nearly two months trying to get VZ to fix their billing errors, but eventually gave in and paid the $260 I DIDN'T owe, just in fear of my credit being tarnished.

    gns

    @verizon.net

I'm in northern NJ and have had FIOS for about 10 months now. For the first eight months I received astronomical bills that were roughly double what was promised in their pre-sales pitch.

I have spent HOURS and HOURS on the phone with their customer "service", time and time again. Each time I called I was put on hold for at least 30 minutes with no hold music or loop, which is surprising for a telephone company (it's impossible to tell if you're still connected). When I finally got a human on the phone, they insisted that the bills were correct; however, when I pointed out that they're actually *NOT* correct, they reluctantly checked and ultimately conceded that I was right. Each time they promised that the problem would be corrected on the following month's bill. And seven times in a row, they were wrong.

After an especially frustrating conversation with a person who seemed polite but ineffectual, she seemed to take pity on my situation and asked if I'd accept a $100 gift card as an apology for my trouble. Of course I said yes, and felt that perhaps I *was* a valued customer after all! The weeks passed, then the months, and still no gift card. So on a subsequent call I asked about the mysterious gift card. They checked and said there was absolutely no indication that a gift card was ever promised. Incredible. They transferred me to their "retention" department (let's just hope they mean customer retention, shall we?) who arranged for the gift card. Amazingly, one arrived shortly thereafter.

My bills have been correct for the past two months, but with Verizon I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop. This has been the absolute worst billing experience I've ever endured.

Rather than hire and train people to fix the problems, they hire and train weasels to deny and lie about them.
They pulled the gift card scam on me too. During the course of trying to get my bill correct, I complained so much they had a special weasel from the Supreme Liars Department call me and swear that they could not have possible offered me a $100 Amex gift card because no such promotion exists!!!!!!!!!!!!

This gutter scam trash company has no morals at all.None-what a filthy disgusting entity.

    Overall: Poor

Verizon's website indicated an offer to get 15/5 mbps down/up at
$49.99/month. When ordering it showed 10/2mbps down/up, so talked to a
Verizon CS rep who stated this was just a typo in the ordering system and
assured me I'd get 15/5 at $49.99 even though the order system showed 10/2.
But upon install, I am only getting 10/2. Called
in to Verizon, they said I will only get 10/2 even though the CS rep
specifically stated I'd get 15/5 before I ordered. No recourse, even if I
cancel to switch out I'll get hit with contract termination fees.

If anyone believes this review they are disturbed in the head. There is no early termination fee if you cancel within 30 days. What is this person afraid of? Understand that I just did a speed upgrade over the phone with a rep from 20/5 to 25/15. It was done in 12 hours, plus I got more hd channels for 5 bucks a month more.

OK, I got it. $45 with phone, $50 without if you ordered online. $55 without phone ordered through CSR.

If you ordered 6/29, when were you installed? If you ordered pre-6/22 and you were installed 6/29, I can see how 10/2 would happen. Also, I think re-sellers have access to old plans.

After 6/22, there is no Verizon order option for 10/2 tier. Existing orders and installations will stay on the 10/2 plan until they are changed. You should be able to make that happen by calling billing, particularly if you insist that the 10/2 should be 15/5.

If you are within 30 days after your installation, there is no ETF. You have the advantage. Try again.

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable
I'm finally in a FiOS area after moving, and I didn't hesitate. After nearly 10 years with Time Warner Road Runner, I'm glad to be free of them. Not in a video area yet, so I got the double freedom data/voice. Voice is voice, although I need to call them to get the porting of my phone number completed on a weekday - never try to port your number on a weekend, the people in charge of that don't work on weekends. The data is great, even though I ordered before the recent upgrade in speeds - I only have the 20/5 right now. Order process completely painless. Install was fairly painless too, although because of the location of my house it took a while to get the fiber across the road and strung to the house. I'd intended to go only ethernet for my install, but the installer wanted to run coax "for the video install down the road" - never mind that my town hasn't even scheduled a franchise agreement meeting yet. I agreed, mainly just to get it done - I have to run cat 5 for the rest of my house anyways, so it isn't a big deal for me to change later. Ran the speedtest at speakeasy once everything was up and running (over wireless) and it spiked to 18 down before settling in at around 15 - installer said "that's just speakeasy's overhead". I just nodded, because I knew the real reason. Once he was gone, I wired my DIR-655 off the Actiontec, turned the wireless in the Actiontec OFF, and connected wirelessly thru the D-Link. Speakeasy gave me a nice solid 20.7/4.5 - no spikes or anything. As I knew, proof that the wireless in the Actiontec is pretty much worthless.

First off, I was kind of surprised how fast they were willing to come and install the service - I ordered it on a Monday, and they had available times as early as that Wednesday to install. I decided to wait an extra week so that we could watch most of what was on our Comcast DVR before we switched!

My neighbor had one of those lengthy installs (his took a good 8-9 hours or so), so I was prepared for the same. To my surprise, they showed up at my door at around noon and were gone by 3:00 pm. One possible reason is that my home is only 4-5 years old or so, and the person who initially wired it did a great job of it. They ran into absolutely zero roadblocks as they were doing their thing (yes, it was a "they", which is another reason why it went smoothly - two techs came to do my house instead of one).

Of course, there can always be a hiccup. Within a few hours of them doing the installation, the dreaded "Red Light" Fail button started blinking as our internet failed. I called Verizon, they did a reboot, and all was good....for a few more hours, at least. The fail button then started blinking again. Given that we both work from home, the stress level quickly started to go high. I called once again, and they decided to send a tech the next morning. That morning, unfortunately for us, the box was indicating no problems again so the tech pretty much came in, checked the lines outside the house, and left....within an hour, the Red Light was blinking once more. I called, and they agreed to send a tech out later in the afternoon once again. The same guy showed up, and this time he decided that a new box install was in order. He told me that four other very recent new customers had experienced the same issues with their boxes. He seemed to indicate that this was very unusual.

Anyway, he installed the new box and ever since then, it's been smooth sailing. Even when the old box was "up", we were getting slow internet download speeds (good uploads). With the new box, we have been blazing along - I have seen readings on speedtest of 19.5 and above (we are on the 20/5 plan). With the old box, we were seeing 1!

So far, the customer service has been superb - I am getting through to customer service pretty quickly with my issues. (We are talking less than 5 minute wait times - one time, I got through in less than a minute). Also, after we installed FiOS, we forgot to push one of our TVs back against the wall in the same room where we have a rabbit. When we let him out of his cage that night, he proceeded to chew through the HDMI wire (eeeeek!). I called the technician who did the initial install, and he came over the next morning with two new HDMIs, no questions asked. Those are the little things I can appreciate. Whether or not they will still be doing it in a few years, who knows!

The TV service is outstanding, and I am loving the multi-room DVR. The product is just so superior to what Comcast puts out there...and this is coming from someone who was genuinely satisfied with Comcast overall (at least in the last few years!). I only switched to FiOS because of the outstanding price we got for two years (more "services" than Comcast, but a bill that will come out $80 cheaper if I factor in what I paid for phone service on top of what I paid Comcast).

So, other than the initial hiccup that was, in my opinion, quickly resolved I have zero complaints. But it's only been a few days, so we'll see what happens as we get through the initial honeymoon period.

Just upgraded my internet to FIOS - 20/5 plan bundled with phone. 79.99/month. No franchise with the city, so TV is not available. I've had it 12 hours now, and everythnig is rock solid! No complaints so far.

Install took about 3. Install is via MOCA. I'll attach pics of the install once I can get them.

    -------update 06-24-2009-----------

I decided not to settle for what Verizon was willing to allow me and insist on getting what they provide new clients by default. I was unable to get such a concession and scheduled account termination for 7/31/2009.

    -------update 06-20-2009-----------

Everyone at Verizon is courteous and completely comfortable not resolving whatever you call about. Even if you are trying to pay when their auto billing isn't, and their website won't. Verizon seems to have designed the system to require at least 2 people to complete any task. The problem starts with an IVR system unable to deliver incoming callers to the chosen place. It then appears there is no penalty for any rep not fixing a problem but they can be fired for taking corrective action.without following all the steps. The result being ... I love the service but not the company. I will most likely go back to Comcast for 6 months @ $19.95/mo. so I can come back as a new customer and get speeds and DHCP they give all new users but wont give a loyal 4+ year customer.

    -------update 4-07-2008-----------

Still working. If you never need to speak with Verizon, it is a great service.

    -------update 3-14-2007-----------

It just works ... and works well.

Their telephone customer service is as bad as the service is good. I can now get FiOS video. I made several calls for information. After getting contradictory, inconsistent and incorrect information I decided to wait until Verizon has more experience. The good news is I have no need to call about my basic service.

    ----------3-15-05 ------------------------

Verizon FiOS Review - originally submitted 3-15-05 by email but there was not yet an ISP category for fiber.

Original review, 2 month update and real time questions. »FIOS - First 7 days reviewed

My FiOS connection has been flawless since my install 3-08-2005 except for 1 16 hour power outage. Up time, latency, stability and speed all great. BBR monitor shows 100% up time with very stable pings from all 3 monitors. All my logs look good. My IP changes every time I reboot my router but have never lost an IP between changes. When I test or make changes the connection comes right back up but with a new IP from a very large subnet (no setting a range to get access to IP secured servers). Port 80 incoming is blocked (Verizon confirmed) but seems to be the only one. The Verizon supplied D-Link DI-604 works well with both FIOS and Comcast Cable. My router/firewall connected instantly on a test and has been on FIOS since the first night. My Broadband reports monitor shows a steady Verizon ping that looks like a rectangle; about .10 + ms. lower than Comcast from all 3 locations. Comcast graphs looked like a pretty mountain range. The latency is a better plus than the speed in comparing this connection to Comcast.

Verizon DNS works and is fast. Nice to know DNS can be an always on service. I set up 3 email accounts online. Simple procedure, names must be a minimum of 6 characters and the system gives the option for alias. I don't know how this affects your total accounts. The email accounts worked with Outlook and Verizon web mail immediately. I never really started using Verizon email because I have other options and Verizon firewall rules block some incoming mail, including Broadband Reports, without notice. This mail just disappears and Verizon support was unable to unblock my requested domains or IP's. Newsgroups work well, no limits and are fast.

Support: Support is enthusiastic and attentive but disorganized. Verizon provides a special FiOS number but the call routing has failed on all 3 of my attempts, the last in October for a DHCP question. My first call got routed to a rep that could not handle calls from my state. My second call failed the auto routing but I spoke to a friendly rep that didn't have an answer.

This hasn't been an issue because the service works so well I have never needed to make a problem call. Bottom line; what better review could I can give any support program!

Ordering: Seinfield could do a show about my attempts to order FIOS from Verizon humans. After 4 days I gave up and started a web order for an un-needed phone line. I was offered FIOS, chose a number, passed credit and set the install date online. I hadn't had a land line in over 2 years. Verizon policy allows FIOS without phone service but seems unable to deal with such primitive customers.

Installation: Verizon confirmed the install. The week before outside techs ran fiber to the entry point and removed the copper. Two friendly professional techs showed up on time and did a great job. They offered but did not make me use Verizon software. Set up a username & password. They left the software and instruction and would have stayed to help me if necessary.

Router: Works. Easy to set up and change. Has several features including port forwarding, dynamic DNS, filters and firewall. Port forwarding works well. The Verizon D-Link has predefined rules for commonly used ports. You need only enable the port and set the internal IP. The D-Link writes the port forward and a firewall rule. I'll continue to use my own router because of QOS and traffic shaping.

Cost: about $55/month including a limited phone line.

After my install I moved my workstations and server to the Verizon Wan. I then turned off my old routers DHCP, changed the internal IP and added my Comcast connection to this LAN. I could then configure workstations to use either gateway (Verizon or Comcast) or DNS to access the internet. This way I could have workstations on either Comcast or Verizon and route workstations out one connection and back the other. I shifted the connections between routers 2 times. Everything worked well and both routers worked as expected. Both connections were good but I kept Verizon.

FiOS would be the perfect residential service if Verizon offered a static IP. DHCP with a stable IP could be a good alternative. My reason for this is because many networks I access use IP authentication.

I have to say, I have been following FiOS for a long time. I started reading about it years ago. Back then I was living in Connecticut and new it was never going to come to us because we had SBC. The day I saw my parents block get the fiber hung was a very happy day. I knew it had arrived. Not long after, I moved back to Long Island. While looking for houses with my wife, I knew where FiOS was working and what areas were being worked on. She wanted to look at houses where it wasn't, I wanted to look where it was. In the end, we decided on Massapequa, already up and running I ordered the service less then a month after we were in the house. and I have to say it has been a great service. Install was a cake walk for the tech, seeing as I was in the middle of rewiring the while house with home runs back to the garage. The whole install took less then 3 hours, and that's with one trip back to the garage for a longer piece of fiber to get from the street to the house. Looking forward to getting the TV service in the next few months, figure its not worth it till I get a HD set.

    Installed: 30/5 service, One phone.

UPDATE: Well I have had the TV service for over a year and it is outstanding. Now that there are over 100 HD channels its really hard to compare to Cablevision. I dropped the internet to 20, to save a few $$, but it really didn't impact me. I've got my family to switch over from Cable to FiOS and they love it as well.

Update 6/26/09: Just upped to 35/20 speed from 20/20 for the same price I was paying before. Still Paying $99 a month for all 3 services. The HD channels are great and with the new Widgets coming out for the set top box, it really turning into a great service. I still think this is a great product and a great company.
