installation in late August 2010 was outstanding and on time. No billing errors to-date. 35/35 Internet performance is as expected. Phone is reliable as expected. TV service is outstanding for PQ and the latest firmware release adds a lot of good stuff to the boxes. My only disappointment is the limited free VOD available without subscribing to a movie package, especially with the top level *Ultimate" service package.
UPDATE: Upgraded to 75/35 when the contract renewed and still very pleased. Effectively getting 83/38. TV remains excellent in quality.

Have been on cable and standard DSL with various providers and all were acceptable with some negative points. My FIOS package with FIOS TV and telephone has beaten everything I have ever used hands down. I have a 50/35 internet package for 79.95 a month, phone for 59.95 and TV for 49.95 and receive a "bundle" discount so it is very, very affordable.
At installation I was concerned about the D-Link 100mb wired router that VZ provided but I have been more than pleasantly impressed. The little thing gets the job done, rarely if ever hangs/fails to route, and has been virtually transparent in use. Well done D-Link!
It took a while of all of the services to be offered here so started with phone/internet. Phone is great. Never down, always clear and the "top of the line" package has every "bell and whistle" I could think of except SymRing which is sad but I have gotten use to not having it. Coupled with the internet experience, very fast transfers and always online this has been the best thing I have done in years.
Once FIOS TV arrived I switched so fast; I was out that door in a flash and I was finally free of "that cable provider" whatever name they are calling themselves this week. And the choices, quality of picture, and stability of service are at the least equivalent of the cable service... but I dont have to deal with the cable company anymore so FIOS wins out again.
All calls to the Verizon customer service number have been handled by someone that had a clear grasp of networking, internet and the interactions of my pc with the equipment. To me it didnt sound like they were "reading a script" like happened so many times with the cable company. And the agent acted like they wanted to help me... and they did.
I have only had to call support six times in 10 years and once was just to ask a question and to me that says something about quality.
Verizon FIOS, for my money it's no contest. It just keeps working and working well.

Price is for cable, landline, and internet. With promotions, I'm paying aout $50 less than I did with RoadRunner and my speeds are 3-4 times faster.
Hope I don't have to move to an area where there isn't Verizon Fios.

Update 5/17/2013 Cost still too high, if it was up to me TV be gone in a minute and phone soon to follow.
The speed is good, as is consistency, but the cost is too high.
Update 6/28/2011
Cost remains at $170.
Speed is fairly consistent 25/25.
STB DVR is has low capacity.
Happy with the service would like a lower cost.
Nothing has changed, I still think the cost is too high and I am looking on what I can do to reduce it.
Update 05/21/2009
New STB firmware improved the picture quality and I would rate it as good to excellent.
The internet has gone down a couple of time the longest being close to a day. Other than those it has been consistent. The speed is always at 20/5.
Update 11/16/2008 New and improved TV HA!!! the latest upgrade from VZ to the set top DVR made a great picture quality bad. It was better with Comcast. Hope they fix it soon.
Update: 9/28/2008 New Install
Decided it was time to give Verizon another chance. I ordered the package with 20/5, telephone and TV and a HD DVR.
They appeared to have made good progress in the past 18 months. I had the ONT still installed from previous install which made it easy for the tech. The internet came right up as did the TV. The Actiontec router is still a bit of a beast but better than before. It's wireless is still not good and I have installed the Linksys in it's place. Internet speed is consistent, though for normal browsing I don't see any difference from CC.
TV quality is better than Comcast, particularly on HD.
Don't use their software to optimize. DSLR tools will get you better performance.
Account creation worked first time without any CS person. (change from first try)
Email works, not sure if it's reliable but so far it has been
Previous install: Instalation was well coordinated with about 4 weeks from order to install. Install of ONT took about 3 hours with another hour to get the computer talking to Verizon. After that, connection was reliable. Verizon email is a nightmare. It took several days to get it set up due to password problems. After that, it didn't work reliably for the entire month I had it.
Customer service was pleasant, non-English speaking as a first language but communicated well. There seemed little they could do to solve email problems and finally suggested that I should be using MSN or Yahoo.
I cancelled FIOS and kept Comcast.
UPDATE: In reading the forum, I see that my decision was correct. Still email problems and still customer service problems. In looking at the latest prices there is nothing to be gained from switching except getting locked into a year contract. If they would lower their phone rates as a bundle, I consider a switch. as it looks right now, I'll probably go with CDV.

Services: FIOS Double Play - 50mbps down / 10mbps up + Select HD Cable
Price: $45/month + $7/month set top box rental.
I initially only wanted internet. However, using Verizon's build-your-own-bundle tool, I found out getting internet + cable was cheaper than getting just internet by itself ($45/mo vs $70/mo before taxes and fees). Verizon also waived all setup/installation fees and threw in a $100 Visa gift card. There's a $7/mo set top box rental fee, but it's still cheaper than just getting Internet.
Installation was fairly straightforward. I scheduled the installation for 1pm - 5pm. The tech arrived at 1:30 and finshed at ~6:00. He initially had some trouble finding something related to the cable connection, but he was able to find it eventually. FIOS comes with a free wireless router, but I told the installation tech I wanted to use my personal router and he hooked it up to the modem for me.
My first bill was much higher than expected: $80 before taxes and fees. When I called customer service I had to provide proof that I was offered $45/mo for the services I was getting. As it turns out, I was being charge for 75mbps/35mbps, even though I ordered 50mbps/10mbps (because that was the fastest speed available to me when I ordered), and my bill even said 50mbps/10mbps. Once that was cleared up Verizon updated my bill.
Note: I haven't had to contact tech support yet.

| | | | Re: you sure Yes, I mean 50/10. That's the speed I paid for and that's the speed I get in multiple tests. I've seen 50/25 advertised on the site, but 50/10 is the fastests speed available to me. I don't have an explanation beyond that. | |

I was a loyal Optimum Online customer for a long time and I loved the speed that was available.Going from 56k modem to 10 mbps down and 2 mbps up was like a big leap in online speed.
But I've also had a lot of problems in my building with the connection over the years.I had a new line run to my apartment because the one that was there had damaged shielding.I've had off and on dropping of TV channels,or TV stops responding and then reboots, phone drops out, lose internet connection.Techs have been out here numerous times as there have been other complaints from people in the building. They fix it and it works for a while then it starts all over again.
I figured if I can get FIOS and at a good price I'd jump at the offer.I was offered 50/25 ,phone ,and Prime TV package.I didn't get anything fancy with the TV package. No DVR,no multi room setup.I don't need all the channels as I don't watch much TV or movies.Prime package gives me enough of what I want.
Ordered online and then had problems verifying my identity.Had to fax them my no drivers photo ID which they couldn't read at their end.Went to one of their stores and had them fax my photo ID.They rejected that one too.So a young guy that worked in the store said to let him try.He made a color copy of my photo ID and sent that and it was accepted.
I was then in contact with a person to process my order .He went over the details and was trying to sell me a bunch of add ons to drive up the bill.I told him I don't want all the crap just what I ordered.
He then said I needed to put up $250 security because I didn't have a credit record.(I've never had a credit card).I would get that back in 12 months.I wasn't expecting that.
I also got an e-mail about the first bill being just about double because the want one month in advance. Its frustrating that you find this out at this point of the sale.
I've only had a few weeks so I can't really say much but so far so good.Connection has been pretty stable and the speeds have been consistent so far.
Will give an update in the future when I find out whats good and whats bad.

Speeds 75/35; install was easy as house already had the equipment installed, they just delivered modem and turned on. Received a refurb actiontech modem, but had it replaced with newest revision within a month of two (persistence paid off). Overall painless process without the new install, service has been reliable and speeds consistent.

I have had Directv for a few years. Never had a problem with them. I had Internet through Cablevision. Never had major problems with them but would notice some slow downs at peak times. I had telephone Voip with Vonage. It was starting to get expensive but didn't have any other options. Then Verizon Fios came to town. I opted for the triple play and got the Extreme package with a Showtime and HBO bundle, 50/25 Internet speeds and telephone service. The install went smooth but took about 6 hours. When I signed up I got one whole home DVR and one HD box. The installer brings an old DVR box and I tell him I want the newest 7xxx series. He says he doesn't have any on the truck and this is what is part of order. Not that happy since the box is slower and doesn't allow for a 16:9 HD guide. Looks pretty bad on my 55inch Samsung. So I call up Verizon and they say go to a Verizon Fios store and swap the box. Did that, but in doing so the rep removed my free DVR for 12 months fee! When I got the bill, the billing rep didn't believe me because she couldn't see the original order. I had to fax my order showing that I got the 12 month DVR fee waived. It was eventually adjusted.
My Internet speeds are great no matter what time of day. Nothing to complain about that. The phone is also good quality.
The picture quality is excellent and to me, beats what I had on cable many years ago and even beats Directv by a small amount. Directv picture quality is great but SD on directv looked grainy but with Fios even SD picture is very good on my 55 inch. I like the Fios guide. I wish there was a way to hide SD duplicates in the guide but when it comes to quality, it really can't be beat. The DVR itself is good. I actually feel like the Directv DVR is a bit easier to use and feels less "clunky" but after getting used to it, it's not that bad. The guide is fast which is a plus.
Overall, I'm saving about $1,000 a year with the bundle with Fios. Can't complain about that plus I'm getting faster speeds and excellent picture quality.

It appears that sometimes the ONLY way to get a good deal is to cancel. Then, actually follow through if you have to, i.e. Comcast -> FiOS in my case. I've had 2 POTS Copper lines since 1977, voice and modem/fax. Initially I was told I could move 1 to FiOS and leave 1 on copper - on installation day, they changed it to "Both or Nothing"! I wanted to transfer my modem line number to my cell phone, so we had to reschedule. I was also told, by a manager, that I would get Channels below ~20 without a STB, in NTSC - FALSE! I got nothing on my multiple old ReplayTV 5XXXs without a STB, or as I choose, a Magnavox DVDR w/HDD (NTSC, ATSC, QAM). I *DO* get at least 20 channels in ClearQAM on my new HDTVs and Magnavox DVDRs. Besides the bill starting out $5 too high and no matter how much I call it never gets corrected, telemarketers started calling the first day I had FiOS Phone. I've had an unlisted number since 1977 and got very few telemarketing calls. With FiOS, I get ~10/day. I blocked a few (up to 10?) on the website and when I bought a Panasonic Cordless Phone Package, I was able to block up to 20 more. FiOS blocks don't ring at all; Panasonic blocks ring once. If I could renew @ $79 (per their current ads) I'd be happy, but $110 is a steep jump. We'll see what happens.

UPDATED 5/13/13
That didn't take long. Not sure how many times I'm going to fall for Directv's promises only to be disappointed. (My wife insists that better be the last time.) Anyway, back with FiOS for everything after another round of buggy DVR, signal loss and other issues with Directv for three months. I will miss the 5-tuner capabilities of the Directv Genie and hope that FiOS gets on the ball with their server.
UPDATED 4/23/13
Well, made the change back to Directv because of the free equipment offer PLUS free MLB Extra Innings and free NFL Sunday Ticket. Still keeping FiOS on the cheapest TV plan - the Select Plan ($74.99) - since I have a lifetime free DVR and since the internet and DV itself still costs that much alone.
Directv's 5-tuner Genie DVR is a tremendous improvement from anything FiOS offers. It has five tuners. Coupled with another DVR that gives me 7 tuners. Also, Directv charges much less per TV than FiOS. With Directv I have two DVRs and three Genie clients boxes - which costs only $6.99 per TV - plus the fee for the first one is waved. That's a total of $27.96 per month. Similar set up with FiOS costs $47.96 - and would be $67 if not for the lifetime DVR. (Directv does charge a weird Advanced Receiver Fee of $25, however you can save $15 per month off that when you sign up for auto pay.) Now we'll see if I end up regretting this switch back when the next storm rolls through.
FiOS internet still has no equal however. Still on the 50/35 plan and still getting speeds around 60/40.
UPDATED 1/26/13
OK, the DSL Reports system manager wants me to update my original review. Here goes.
-- Still have FiOS, even though I've sampled DirecTV during the last year as well. The best thing about FiOS remains its reliability. It is rock solid. Even during Hurricane Sandy, when we lost power, the FiOS never went out, until the backup battery died.
-- The DVR's have been greatly improved since I originally joined in 2010. Faster, better looking, larger HDs, ability to connect an external drive. The interface - now 1.9.1 is much better than the old 1.8 interface.
-- TV picture remains pristine and although FiOS doesn't offer some HD channels that people clamor - whine - for, it carries every one I enjoy watching, save for CBS SportsNetwork.
-- Also upgraded internet speed to 50/35, although it measures more like 60/40 at most times, which is great.
-- Multi Room DVR service works great, although what can be annoying are audio/video dropouts when watching a program from a different DVR. It is quickly remedied by rewinding the program, but still, it's bothersome. (Doesn't happen all the time though, which is weird.)
-- Recent software update to DVRs has improved the interface speed. For a while there were some issues, but all appears to have been fixed (knock wood).
-- Only wish there would be more HD offerings for sports subscriptions. Still limited when compared to DirecTV, which is the only reason I'm leaning toward going back to DirecTV when baseball season starts.
-- Also in our area, the Ultimate package includes every premium channel - HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Showtime, TMC, Epix - which is a steal if you're into those channels.
-- My monthly price includes three DVRs - one free for life - and a free SD STB, also included free for life with the package I originally received. DVRs run $19.99 per month for the main MRDVR and $16.99 for regular DVRs. (HD STBs - non-DVR - are $6.99.)
