Recently switched to Verizon FiOS after 10+ years as an @home/Comcast customer. I had the Comcast 22/2 package. I Ordered Triple Play TV/Voice/Internet 25/25 package online.
It was nine days order to install. Tech was on time, very professional, willing to answer a lot of questions regarding the video service. Install took just under two hours. Received the new Actiontec Rev E router. Switched my home network from the default 192.168.x.x to 10.255.x.x with no problems - even the STBs picked up the new addresses without a flinch.
FiOS internet is simply amazing. My son and I each have an xbox and play CoD MW2 heavily. Fantastic ping times on CoD MW2. With Comcast, we could usually find just 3 or 4 matches. With FiOS, we can find 17 or 18 matches. Traceroutes on FiOS are open and very clean. On Comcast, a traceroute would show 8 to 10 hops - all masked - before hitting the public network. With FiOS, just 2 hops to the public. Cached DNS queries average just 9ms, uncached average 43ms, both according to DNSbench. I also work from home quite a bit, and the 25 mbps upstream has made a world of difference.
I was a bit concerned switching from a service I had for so long - my Comcast internet was rock solid as well. What primarily drove me to switch was consistently poor Comcast hi-def video. But overall I'm very, very, very happy I changed. Great internet, and fantastic video service as well.

I finally got the guts to change away from comcast. I was not happy with Verizon DSL years ago and all the false promisses. We hooked up on a friday with Fios. Hookup went smoothly. Lines inside were tested to ensure best connection. Internet speeds were 25/24 just like they said. Fast enough to stream netflix to at least 3 tvs at the same time. TV picture is much better. I don't care much for the lack of free movies on demand (comcast is WAY BETTER). I don't like the fact I had to do a contract but do understand the investment finally made. Keep in mind that Verizon sold off FIOS to another company and you should take that into consideration. I was not told until after installation of this change. I probably would have not proceeded. Nonetheless, everythings been working smoothly.

Well, I was a previous TWC RoadRunner subscriber paying for standard + $10/month for turbo, I was supposed to get 15mbps/768kbps. I never had a problem I can say for the first 12 months but after that every night I wouldn't even get 1mbps download! for 3+ months....then it started happening quite often during peak times also. So I called TWC multiple times and they said they would send some guys out to do a maintenance in the area, but they just kept on pushing the day forward 3 times.
Well, finally FiOS was available in my area and made the switch. I ordered through the website and everything was clear and explained perfectly. Went ahead and ordered the 20/20 with free activation and first month free.
Installation day came and Tech arrived ahead of scheduled time. Installation took few hours. The ONT was installed in a closet since I live in an apartment so it wouldn't be visible anywhere in the house, then the Tech used the existing COAX cable from TWC to wire from the ONT to my desktop.
I got my service around February 12th 2009 and I've been getting full speed no matter when I use it. Also when I'm uploading at full 2.1MB/s I can still play games browse web with no problem.
Right now I'm just waiting for FiOS TV to be available so I can get the triple play or just TV and Internet.
Overall I'm really pleased with the service so If anyone live in a area with FiOS I recommend you switch!
UPDATE: Well, It's almost 1yr since I got the service and since the day I got 20/20 internet speed, I jumped on the bundle of FiOS TV + Internet 25/15. Performance still blows TWC out of the water and I'm getting about 35/25 in speed with no slow downs no matter what time of the day. FiOS TV picture quality is as perfect as it can be in HD compared to what I had in TWC. Only few issues I have is that sound sometimes goes out and comes back but that rarely happens.
Looking at things I'm totally satisfied with the service and will continue to use it. Down side is prices for new bundles seems to go up.

I used to use Verizon DSL and I was happy with it, it served my downloading and uploading and gaming needs.
I switched to FiOS for the bundle; It costs me about $140 a month for phone, i-net and TV. Each service is $33/mo, plus $12 for converter boxes, plus $16 for some movie channels and then some taxes & fees. Just upgraded to their introductory HD package, with no extension of contract (it was 2-years) or increase in price. Got a free wireless modem and free installation.
(However, they initially charged me for the installation ($125), but I called and complained. They wanted me to pay it first and then they'd credit me. I told them, no way I was paying it at all. The next month it was off my bill.
I had a couple of technical questions, and they answered promptly and correctly

I signed up for FiOS after I graduated college and had to leave my school's 500M Cogent connection behind. I already had an ONT installed in my apartment, so it only took them a few days to send a tech out to hand me my cable card for my TiVo. At that time I had 20/20 service with basic FiOS TV. Recently they offered the 35/35 service with all standard SD/HD channels, EPIX and Showtime for $115 combined. The only catch was that I had to sign a 24 month contract with a $360 ETF. This is kind of lame since the ONT was already installed here when I moved in, so Verizon really has no install losses to make up for at this site.
Overall,
- I get the 35/35 service I pay for at all times of the day.
- I get about a 10-15 ms ping to most sites.
- I have a noticeably better experience (only lags occasionally, I usually end up being the host) when playing Xbox Live games (such as Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3) at my apartment with FiOS versus when I go back to my parents home, which uses Cox.
- The ordering was straightforward, I ordered online both for initial install and upgrade.
- Initial install took 3 days, the upgrade took effect about 5 hours after I ordered.
- Actiontec router, Tellabs 1600-612 SFU ONT, [Unknown Brand] M-stream cable card ($4/month), Motorola HD STB ($10/month)
- I hated their router and didn't want to use it. I called VZ and asked them to switch my ONT from MoCA (coax) to Ethernet so I could use my own router. They did it immediately and while I was still on the phone. I now have their router after my WRT54GL, so that the STB can receive all it's information.
- Great experience overall, though a little on the pricey side. $1 / Mbit would make more sense given available technology, but this is the best out there if it is available in your area.

I've been a Verizon DSL customer in the past, but long runs from the CO meant that I was limited to 384K. I switched to Cox HSI for my service a couple of years ago, and was pretty happy. Then Verizon ran the fiber into our neighborhood. Since my Daughter went with FiOS and loved it, I decided to give them a try.
The original install date offered by VZ was during a time when I was going to be out of time, but I was able to easily schedule for when I was available. Now, this was going to be a complicated install as we have 6 TVs that I wanted enabled. Prior to the install, I re-wired the cables around the house to get rid of chained splitters, etc.
The install was scheduled for 9-12 AM, and the installer was here at 10:00. He had a lot of work with all those sets, but got it set up and ready to roll in a couple of hours. He had some issues with his equipment, but got us set up and left his business card in case I had any problems.
So far, it's been stable and fast (26 Mbps download!). I've had some interactions with the support folks that have all gone very well. I do network assessments for a living so I'm a pretty demanding network user, but I've been able to get their stuff to work the way I want. For a more normal home user, their out-of-the-box install is all anyone needs.
One other point - I'm using Vonage as my phone service provider. It's working better with FiOS as the network is a lot more stable. Cox kept dropping the network every so often, interrupting calls (or blocking them). Now, none of those problems. And the video quality is much better than the old cable system.

As soon as FiOS was available to me, I switched over my static IP package (need to get Business FiOS for this) Old Package: Speakeasy DSL, 1.5/768k, 5 static IPs, $85/mo New Package: 20/5, 1 static IP, $99/mo
So far, it's been working great. The speed is fantastic, and I haven't had any problems. Overall I'm very pleased. It's certainly worth the extra $15/month.
Order: After seeing the trucks working on the poles on my street a couple times, I got a couple letters, and called the phone numbers given, and was told I'd get a callback when it was available. Finally, at the end of Jan 09, I saw online that my address was available, called, and got an install date the next week.
Install: The tech called right before the end of the window, showed up 15 minutes later, and everything was installed neatly within a couple hours. He ran Ethernet from the ONT straight to my server, no router or anything, as I requested.
Speed: The link works as advertised. On the Speakeasy speed test, I get 19.5/4.5. Just pinging my gateway went from 20ms on DSL to 1.5ms on FiOS.
Support: There were 3 minor issues/settings I was able to resolve over the phone. Support certainly isn't as fast or knowledgeable as Speakeasy, but got it done. - I didn't get access to online billing at my install, and the web site wouldn't take my order number. They gave me a login/password over the phone - When FiOS was installed, I plugged in my laptop to verify everything was working (it was). Then I unplugged the laptop and plugged in the server, which didn't work until I cloned the laptop MAC address onto the server's ethernet card. Resolving this was an interesting tech support call, but ultimately their suggestion of resetting the ONT resolved this and allowed me to use the native MAC address. - Setting up reverse DNS requires a phone call, instead of just filing a ticket at Speakeasy.
=== Update Feb 2010 ===
I bit on the $5/mo upgrade to 25/25. I don't get those speeds on the various speed test apps, but I do get it in my real world use case of transferring large files to and from my servers at work.

| FIOS is great until there is a problem
Your Speakeasy speed test may be misleading. Verizon cleverly routes speed tests sites differently than your normal traffic, so if you have slow internet traffic due to packet loss as I did within the Verizon network, the speed test is likely to show near normal speeds.
I just recovered from my 5th outage in two weeks, despite trying to get a ticket opened on the packet loss, which is hardly worth the time. I had to go thru 3 help desk people whose job is to blame your computer or router for about 6 hours of phone time before saying they are escalating the ticket to an engineer. Then they tell you that a 24 hour time is imposed on engineering to get back to you on the ticket. Needless to say, I heard nothing from anyone in over two weeks... Verizon is a monopoly that cares less about its users.

I just did another test from my office - "normal traffic" in my use case, and verified I'm getting within 10% of the advertised speeds.

Recently my family relocated to another city and moved into a newer home/neighborhood. Having long been a AT&T (SBC) DSL user, I was actually disappointed to discover they did not cover our new neighborhood. I used to pay $24 for 2.2mbps down / 512k up on AT&T. I was notified Verizon covers this area but no DSL was available- just FIOS and Time Warner Cable.
I opted for the FIOS package of 10Mbps down / 2Mbps up. Ordered online and received a phone call to confirm an installation date, the wait time was approximately 2 weeks until the installer could come. At no point however was I notified Coaxial cable would be used from the ONT installed in the garage. I would have preferred a CAT5 cable installation so I could retain use of my WRT54GL easily. The installer did not seem to know much about network configurations. He did however do a great job at installing the ONT in the garage. He was not from Verizon directly, rather some form of contractor hired by Verizon to do the install. When the install did not function correctly, he had a program (automated script) which ran off of a USB drive to automate installation.
He told me my router's default password and forgot to mention my Wireless WEP key- not a problem as I figured this out myself and setup all QoS, Security, Networking Preferences...
The router supplied is a Westell UltraLine Series3 Model 9100EM. It is fairly easy to configure, has an unknown USB port in the back (I assume for firmware or service purposes). Coaxial and RJ45 WAN port. 4-port switch with built in Wireless-G. Overall seems like a decent little device- though I still miss my WRT54GL running custom (Tomato) firmware... maybe in the future I'll run some CAT5 cable myself, and call Verizon to do service changes on their end.
Speed Test results show 10236 down and 1860 up.
Update:
During the '09 year I upgraded to the 25/15 package (actual speeds seem to be closer to 25/25) for $64.95. I have also replaced the coaxial connection with a CAT5 connection. I had to call Verizon to tell them I had CAT5 in place and needed them to turn it "on" remotely to switch from Coaxial to CAT5. After the initial IP address lease expired all was well on the CAT5. I have also stopped using the Westell9100EM and have gone back to my WRT54GL with custom firmware. Should I opt for FiOS TV in the future I will connect the 9100EM downstream from the WRT54GL for program guide purposes
Overall a great service.

"Great internet speeds."
"Incompetent installers. Infuriating support line. increasing SNAFU's with router and connection reliability"
"What started out wonderfully, is quickly falling apart. Will be looking elsewhere"
| Pre Sales Information: Install Co-ordination: Connection reliability: Tech Support: Value for money: (ratings below consensus)

To summarize:
Yes, the "triple play" starts at $99, but we've added quite a few extras since then; not least of which:
= upgrade to 20/5 internet (from the base 10/2) (+$10)
= One HD-DVR (+$19.95)
= Two HD receivers (+$9.95 each)
= One SD receiver (+$5.99)
And the remaining to the usual taxes and un-fees (and whatever the HD channels package costs).
Pre-Sales information does its job for the big stuff, but naturally leaves out the costs involved for the additional STB's and the upgrade for faster internet speed. Sadly, none here would allow me to upgrade to a higher speed beyond the 20/5 service, saying that anything faster is not allowed to be bundled, and thus the bundle savings would be lost.
The install co-ordination for the FiOS internet went without a problem, and we were provided their branded modem/wireless router. It has good performance and I seem to be able to realize most of the speed being paid for while still doing in-LAN stuff. Disturbingly though, Verizon ships these out with only WEP enabled, and apparently trains their install techs to believe that WEP is "more than enough" for any home service. That may have been about ten years ago, but I certainly didn't feel confident enough in it. After some initial tryout to make sure this thing would work, some reconfiguring of its settings got us back up to the desired level of security for it.
Also of note for DS users: the provided FiOS modem/router package does not work as automatically for Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. You'll basically have to manually assign an IP and DNS settings in the DS's connection options with this router. After this though, all green. Assuming you stick with WEP, of course.
For the phone, Verizon stuck a UPS on the inside of the home to keep the phone service operational in case of power outage. Only negative is that it occupies one of your power outlets in the house. Not major (given its location), but worth noting.
The TV install was the more... curious one. Literally had to play the project manager to make sure that everything was taken care of.
For the roommate that did want the HD receiver, they provided an HDMI cable to link up his Vizio HDTV to the receiver; all programmed fine. For the HD-DVR in the living room, it was connected to same roomie's old Dell LCD HDTV. At first they wanted to use HDMI as well, but this TV doesn't have HDMI, and it also needs the "PC Audio" input to supply audio when using HDMI-to-DVI. Neither of the installers (yes, two of them showed up for it) had the appropriate adapter. For a while they acted like they didn't have any spare cables, but finally one of them produced a set for the connection, which I took care of. For my room and my Vizio, since I've been using the HDMI for my consoles, and had component cables to a switch, they neither would provide the necessary cables nor actually do the hook-up. This rather annoyed me. They also basically 'recycled' the inputs that the standard def receiver would then use, and programmed all that.
Also, of note, had a snafu with randomly garbling of the signal that the HD-DVR would receive. Called up Verizon and they provided a replacement box. Sad to see all the saved stuff by then go, but it seemed to have fixed the problem.
No problems with the phone to speak of either. And the verizon page that allows remote configuration and adding recordings to schedule for the HD-DVR is a real plus.
In short, the product delivers. However, I do feel that first and foremost, the install techs could use some (gentle) (re)education about things such as network security before they start making blanket statements like "WEP is more than enough". So far, what few things had gone wrong with the service have been resolved quickly.
The only frustration right now is for my other roommate, which has been struggling to find a single wireless adapter that will work with him and the FiOS router. I currently use a Buffalo 4-port ethernet converter (which can't be legally bought anymore ), and he's gone through about literally five different wireless adapters for his desktop, and they've all had the same nature of problems:
- varying degrees of connection stability and latency
- all refusing to get even a quarter of the internet speeds we're paying for
- a few were simply incompatible with the rest of his desktop's hardware (q9550 with an eVGA 750i FTW motherboard)
At this point, he's currently resigned to a belkin usb wireless adapter; not very good speeds from it, but so far the most stable at gaining and retaining the connection. I wish there was more I could do for him, but I'm afraid to cause more trouble his way.
**UPDATE**
Alright, so here's the deal. Connection speed has been (mostly) solid. However, reliability on phone and internet has been increasingly bad.
This has been coupled into a double-whammy with the infuriating support line Verizon has with that "voice recognition machine from hell." It literally takes an hour or more before we FINALLY can get through to a goddamn human being because they programmed that thing so ungodly awful. That already gets old the first time around.
Another point of frustration is that the supplied modem/router from Verizon makes it nigh on impossible to properly do in-LAN media sharing between my computer and console(s). CONSTANTLY I am having to fight with the thing and the devices in order to get them talking to each other, and even after I get it working, it only works for a few days at a time, and then stops allowing it for weeks (and months!) on end. And of course, nobody at Verizon would bother to help me out in getting it resolved... and I had enough of just trying to get through to someone that could help when the connection (or phone line) go down to bother to call up for this issue.
My patience for dealing with this has run at an end. It has become clear that Verizon is not interested in continuing business with us.

1 edit | Re: own router you're stuck with the verizon router being around under any circumstance since you have their TV service. i would definitely recommend just having them activate ethernet on the ont box.
then you can take their router out of the picture as your primary, and put your own. to solve the problem of needing the verizon router to stay connected for the TV service, simply configure it and hook it up to an available port on your OWN router. you'll never have to deal with the verizon router ever again with a setup like this.
it will be as if it does not exist except to serve your TVs and that's it. | |

Have had fios at this same location for almost 3 years now, couldn't be happier. The only downtime that I've ever had was a major routing problem that affected a huge part Verizon's customer base on the east coast. I'm currently at their 20x5 speed, and speeds are very consistent no matter the time of day. Also recently switched to the WRT54GL w/ Tomato, which works flawlessly with fios. The Actiontec was kind of flaky, DHCP didn't always want to hand out ip addresses.
Thinking back to the install, the installer was on time, and was very quick and professional. You can't go wrong with this service.
