FiOS was installed about 2 weeks ago and so far, so good. Got the triple-play with 25/25 internet and a total of 3 phone lines (my wife and I both work from home). They installed an ONT that can handle up to 8 phone lines and the battery backup is HUGE. Fortunately, it's tucked in an out of the way corner. By the way, the $30 price noted above is for just the internet service.

It was 2 weeks from order to install, due to my choosing. They could have scheduled me within a week, but I wanted to be home for the install. My install was smooth, with the installer arriving early in the 4 hour window, it is just fairly involved and takes a while. I got the 5/2 internet service, which is costing me just under $36 a month right now. This is much better than the $58.50 I was paying Comcast (now TW) for 4/384k service. I also have FIOS TV now (got rid of Dish Network), and am overall happy with it but am not really reviewing the TV in this review. I had 2 minor outages in the first 2 weeks, both at night. In Verizon's defense, I was one of the first 5 people to get service in my neighborhood so they were still getting everything tweaked when I got turned on. Service has been rock solid ever since. The latency on the connection has also been generally a bit better than I had with cable. The only downside I have is that I had to use the Actiontec router because of the TV service. It doesn't play nice with my ATT Callvantage adapter, so I had to make my Linksys router primary, and hang the Actiontec off it as a switch. Everything works, but the average guy/gal may not know how to do this. Overall, very satisfied for the price. I've had the service since 11/22/06.
Update on 5/29/09: I had my Actiontec Rev. A router die on 5/15. A short 10 min. phone call had a replacement on the way. A refurbed Actiontec Rev. D arrived on 5/18. I swapped it into my configuration (as noted above) and it's been working fine since. Overall, I have been very satisfied, as I have only had 1 major outage since getting the service and that was due to a city working hitting the line in front of my neighborhood.
Update 5/14/12: I've moved (about 10 miles) to another city serviced by FiOS. The move process was quite easy and everything happened when Verizon said it would. We have a new house with wiring already in place, so I just labled the cables and told the technician what to plug in where. So, they spend most of the time just installing the ONT, then the plugged it all in, made sure it worked, and left. We've had service at the new place just about a month and it has been solid here too. The only complaint I would have is that the on-screen caller ID and remote DVR stuff doesn't seem to be working right at this time. Not a big deal to me, but it seems common for folks to have these issues. Internet is solid and stable as always. As a note, when we were looking for a new house, FiOS was one of our requirements - it just is generally better than cable or the areas served by AT&T DSL in the DFW metro area.

Installation was easy except I had been told on the phone they would run the fiber in the wall and the installer wouldn't. But he did manage to hide most of it, going through my coat closet.
Intro pricing was great. I was saving almost 50% from what I was paying with Time Warner Cable and that alone was worth the price of admission.
The picture quality is far superior to TWC, RCN or Cablevision. The channel selection with the Ultimate HD package is huge and isn't missing a single channel I'd want. I wouldn't mind if they removed all the Fox channels though. I'd even be willing to pay the same price just to have Murdoch off my TVs.
VZN customer service is awful, BUT it's 100 times better than TWC. Hard to imagine I'm happy to have awful customer service just to not have to deal with SH!*^Y customer service.
The STBs: Well they leave a little to be desired. Somehow they left off the power outlet for the TV. Not a huge problem, but annoying. They also left out a simple sleep function. Come on guys, a 2 year old could write the code for that!!!!! There's also the issue with the tremendous heat they give off (especially the DVR) and excessive amount of power they eat up. Able to solve that problem on the non DVR STB by using an energy saving power strip that powers everything down when the TV is in stand-by mode. I know the DVR needs to use more power b/c the HD spins a lot, but when it's not in use (recording, playing) the power needed should be reduced. I read an article that TV STBs use more electricity in a year than a standard kitchen refrigerator.
VZN also has some screwed up ideas for rolling out updates. They are SOOOO slow (NYC is last) and despite years of delays (sometimes just months,) the updates are quite buggy and the fixes take MANY MANY months or years, as I haven't even seen the fix yet for a pixelation issue they created with the last update.
The multi-room DVR is nice, but not all functions actually work. You cannot pause and resume, as their advertising shows. You have to start the show all over again. In fact this is true of all VOD. This is a problem they created with the 1.9 IMG release and claim to have fixed with the 1.9.1 release. I hope to see that update in 2012, but have my doubts.
All in all, I have no intention of switching to internet tv like hulu/netflix, etc, so I'm happy with FiOS. The fact that they don't offer current customers the same deals as new ones is wrong, even TWC and VZN wireless do that. And they made current DVR subscribers pay to update to their newest DVR. These are things that make me think for a second about switching back to cable, but remembering the years and years of god awful service, outages, slow internet, poor picture quality, limited channel lineup, etc, etc, etc, keeps that but a fleeting thought.
I even convinced my parents to switch from Cablevision to FiOS and while their installation didn't go as smoothly, they are very happy with it. Of course they have the triple play with the Ultimate HD package and 35/35 internet, plus phone and pay $10 less per month than I do. Still can't figure out how that worked out
FiOS has it's problems, no doubt, but I'd rather get more and better for less or the same money than want to throw my TV out the window daily because I have TWC.

Had FiOS installed 4/26. It's like my tv has a new life. Internet speeds have been rock solid no matter what or how many things I'm doing.
So far from the 2 times I've had to use them, customer service has been great and my questions/problems were resolved within!15 minutes of my call.
Missing a couple of channels but it's worth it.

After about a year of declining DSL speeds and increasing DirecTV fees I decided to finally convert to Fios and it's been going very well ever since. I scheduled the install about three weeks after the order to give me plenty of time to run additional ethernet and prep the space for the ONT. I received an SMS when the truck rolled out right on time. Installer was friendly and professional and everything went smoothly.
Price includes Fios Internet 25/25, Extreme HD TV package and unlimited landline with a bunch of calling features. The connection speed tests well, usually around 20-30Mbps download and 10-15Mbps upload, not the full 25/25 all the time but pretty much as expected. I got one of their newer wireless routers and they now install them by default with WPA2 instead of WEP so I didn't even have to change anything there.
This bundle includes one free DVR for life, and I ordered a second one also. The DVR (Motorola QIP7232) is actually better than I expected after coming from Tivo and having used some other types over the years here and there. It's got 500GB capacity out of the box and will even take external storage (supported with one of the WD eSATA drive models, 500GB or 1TB) but I don't think I'll need that.
By the time my introductory discounts expire I am hoping that the system below is on the market and meeting the hype at a decent price so I can escape the DVR tax:

I've wanted FIOS for years but never lived in an area where it was available. How I lived without FIOS for so long baffles me. Now that I have it, I'll never be able to live without it. The internet speeds are unheard of and are stable\reliable. Internet is most important to me so I'm golden. I'm using my own router. My internet is Ethernet\DHCP so all I had to do was release the DHCP lease on the Verizon router and plug the Ethernet drop into my Linksys WRT610Nv2 running TomatoUSB. The routers supplied by Verizon are yawn.
TV is pretty good but here is where my complaints are. The hard drive size is not very big. FIOS TV is missing several HD channels that many other providers have. For me, I'm disappointed that Fox Soccer Channel HD and BBC America HD are not available. I had Remote DVR Access working using my Linksys router but they disabled my access because I am using an unsupported router. I understand if it's not supported but don't disable mine when it's working fine. Not happy about that but I'll live.
My bill will go up to ~$170 a month ($155 if I drop FS+) after my first 6 months. First month is ~$135.
Signed up on 4/26/10. Live on 4/30/10 FIOS 35/35 Internet Ultimate HD with EPIX 1 x Home Media HD-DVR STB 1 x HD STB Fox Soccer Plus a la carte (+$15)
UPDATE 11/2/10 In late July, I returned the Home Media DVR and the HD STB for a HD DVR box to save some money. It took until October to get the billing straightened out but each time I was properly credited, just a hassle to call and fix it. It's all good now. My bill is now ~$135\month after promotions\credits. I'm getting $20 credits and HBO\Cinemax free until December.
UPDATE 12/22/10 I just dropped FiOS TV but kept FiOS internet. I now have 15/5 for $54.99 a month. I switched to TWC for TV because they have 3 soccer channels (FSC, FS+, and GOLTV) in HD. FiOS has 0. As soon as FiOS catches up with FSC and FS+, I plan on going back to FiOS TV.
UPDATE May 2011 I came back to FIOS TV after the footie season was over and also went with a triple bundle. I currently have Ultimate HD with a MR-DVR in the living room and a stand alone HD box in the bedroom, 35/35 internet, and digital voice for ~$136/mth including taxes and after discounts. I'm happy with the newer STB's and FSC-HD is nice. All I need now is FS+HD and IMG 1.9.
UPDATE 11-28-11 Bill went up $10 to ~$146. Lost a discount. Following another members action, I've decided to lower the value for money option. I'm constantly debating whether or not I should go back to TWC for TV. FiOS TV has fallen behind with HD additions. TWC has FS+, GolTV, ESPN Deportes, and soon Fox Deportes all in HD. FiOS has none of those. It was like pulling teeth getting FiOS to give us FSC in HD. I'm pretty sure I can count the number of HD additions since April 2010 on both hands. Really wish FiOS exec's would make some decisions on their plans to combat this but nothing but fuzzy math and logic so far.
UPDATE 4-11-12 I decided to lower the pre-sales and tech support ratings. The product works great but when I have to speak to six different reps to make changes to my account, it's frustrating. Anytime I have made changes to my account, it's been painful :/

This is my second go-round with FiOS. At my previous residence I had a Double-Play (no TV), but Cablevision out-competed them on price, so for about 1 or 2 years I went BACK to Cablevision (win-back incentives gave me an incredible value).
When I moved to my current residence, we got tired of Cablevision's blackouts and started to look at FiOS again. The $120 I'm currently paying for triple play (25/25 internet, multiroom DVR plus two other boxes, TMC, SHO, HBO) is about the same as I'd pay Cablevision, but I'm getting vastly superior service on all three products. HOWEVER....
I'm thinking of going back to Cablevision AGAIN in the next couple of months. WHY? Because the 6 months of free multiroom DVR is going to end, and my monthly bill will increase $20 to about $140, a price that is definitely more expensive than similar service from Cablevision.
As long as these companies keep incentivizing churn rate, I'll play their game.
4/7/12 - Back in ~November, I came within a few hours of a Cablevision reinstall - the appointment was set for less than 12 hours - the terms were signed and agreed to, I was getting a free iPod Touch, their network DVR package and similar programming to what I was getting from Verizon and then I called Verizon to tell them about the shut off. Their retention department did such a good job that they convinced me to keep FiOS. I ended up getting EVERY non-international channel (besides the pay-per-views and porn networks) plus I was switched to the free DVR plan, all for a price that was less than I had been paying previous.
To make things a little better, this week I had a service call to tack down some internal coax wires that had come loose, and the tech replaced my Actiontec router to their latest - the Rev. I that provides wireless N. I'm getting full 35/35 speeds (actually about 43/35 in real life testing) wirelessly and via ethernet, and since my last review, I'm FINALLY taking advantage of HD - we've now got 3 HD TVs to enjoy our FiOS service. The phone service works as well as any I've had, with plenty of features that I don't even use.
Comments:
 | | Not in the same league. Calling Cablevision TV service "similiar" to FiOS TV is a complete and total exaggeration. Cablevisions TV service is absolute junk. | |

»FIOS Install Monday will be 30 degrees outside
That thread is the account of my ordeal with verizon FIOS. The install coordination is horrible and I wish I could give them a score lower than a 1 but that is not possible. I love the service and the speed is good, I dont think I am getting the full 2 megs up (more like 1.75 or so) but I am a happy camper, and for 34.99 you cant complain about that. Ping times are good, latency is good, and I can use the VOIP phone now while downloading something from the net which is really good.
I dont know what else to say about it, everything works (SO far) and I hope it stays that way. Just be very cautious about the install process and make sure you only get it done in the morning, not the evening. The installer cut my copper before the fios was hooked up and then the installer ran into some issues with the run from other parts of the neigborhood so I thought I would be SOL, but it all worked out.:)
---Update
FIOS has been running fine for some time now. It has gone down 2 or 3 times, but always been back up within 24 hours. Also the times that it went down, there were extremly bad storms (and one was a bad car accident close to my home). A+ for connection reliability, much better than cable. Speed is always consistant. I dont think I have ever had a download issue other than the first day or so. FIOS is extremly reliable, and I dont ever want to go back to cable or DSL .

OK, I moved to NJ after suffering with Time Warner for years living in NYC. When I 1st moved here I went with Cablevision and it was a horrible 2 months with inconsistent speeds the whole time. The only reason I didnt go with FIOS 1st was the price but after 2 months of CV support trying their best to keep me as a customer I went over to FIOS.
I signed up online and opted for TV and 25/15 internet with a 1yr contract and 2 yr price guarantee. I signed up on a Thursday and was offered a Saturday install, 2 days later!!! I couldn't be home Saturday so opted for Monday 8am. I got a call on Friday confirming and giving me the basic lowdown on what I needed to do. Nothing major just make sure they can get to the computer, and common sense stuff.
The installers were prompt and started work immediately and worked straight through till lunch. They installed everything very neatly using existing wires and then took the time to show me the basics with the TV, the internet is self explanatory but they did make me set up an email acct.I was given an Actiontec MI424-WIR Rev E connected with coax.
I haven't been this happy with an ISP since the days of 1000000 dial up companies to choose from and I could pick a good provider. Rock solid 25/20 speeds, thats right Im paying for 25/15 and I get 20 up all the time. I cant find anything bad to say about it and Im so used to complaining with TWC and CV that Ive looked for every reason. I used to test my speeds all the time and get angry now I do it with a smile just to see how solid this service is. It could be a bit cheaper but to be honest even thats hard to complain about.
UPDATE: Nothing has changed except I now get 25/25 service, rock solid. My only gripe is that the CS dept are idiots. I want nothing more than to give them more $$ every month by switching to the 35/35 and Ultimate HD package and they wont let me do it without a new contract. So Ill stick with what I have and they can get $20 less a month from me.
UPDATE 11/20/2010 : All is still well except one thing and I might end up canceling and going back to CV for service. I want to change my plan to the 35/35 and Ultimate HD package and they insist I need to sign another contract which I will never do. All I want to do is give them $20 more a month and they insist on being difficult. If push comes to shove Ill leave, but what kind of morons do business this way?
UPDATE: 12/24 Still good internet service, TV is OK with DVR a constant issue. SUPPORT IS USELESS ESPECIALLY THE DIRECT SUPPORT ON THIS SITE.
UPDATE 4/1/2012 - Moved and had the option to stay with CV or come back to FIOS, and to be honest Im happy I am back. CV was just not nearly as good as FIOS, the connection quality is leaps and bounds above CV. The reason for the low customer svc scores were the inability to get around putting a social sec # in online or faxing a bunch of junk to them when we had an account prior and maintain a VZW acct for 10 yrs.The installers were top notch union guys who did a great job, and were apologetic over a very tiny pile of dust they left behind from drilling a hole which I found amusing since CV kind of left a mess in my last install.
