Updated speedtest in the morning:
»www.speedtest.net/result/2626988466.png
Update: Put back the Verizon router rev G. So far so good.
Update: Upgraded to the triple play package with 150/35 (provision at 150/65, get 153/58), verizon ultimate with all movie channels and a home phone. Received 7232 DVR and a standard box for free as long as i maintain a triple play package. DVR works perfectly. Paying 139.99 (without tax) didn't receive the bill yet. So far so good.
Ordered FIOS double play (35/35) with home phone on 10/2/2011 and installed on 10/22/2011. The tech was very helpful and knowledgeable. He put in the ONT into my garage and hook it up thru the ethernet port into my network. The tech said i was the first installation in my 5-6 block and was the first connection to the hub. The tech had to get another tech to come over and wire the pole to install a new mini box. I removed the verizon actiontech router and hook it up into my Asus RT-16 router with tomato firmware. This works perfectly. I receive my full 35 download speed however my upload is around 31-32. Also if i use up all the bandwidth the other PC starts to crawl when going on the internet, with Road Runner they might have some QOS setup on their connections since i am still able to access the internet when the bandwidth is all pulled up. I love the online tool management for the digital phone, can get voicemail and handle the administration of the digital phone. Fios is a little expensive 79.99 for first year, 89.99 for second year and 3+ is 99.99. Haven't got the bill yet, so don't know if there is any additional taxes and fees add up. Previously have Road Runner Cable Turbo for 29.99 for a year for 9+ year.

I think you need to be careful if you add the free for life DVR it goes up by 10 and i have the 35/35 internet package so it goes up another 10. After you add in all the taxes since i live in NY it will probably be very high. Currently i have dish network which is 32.99 with no taxes and fees. The price of Fios is also only good for a year. | |

| Re: odd No, this is why I said ONLINE order, its $85 opposed to the $80 double you signed up for. Might be too late for you now. Do you think you actually need the 35/35? The 15/5 package Im referring to would normally get you 20/6. Verizon over-provisions their speeds. More than adequate for 99% of the population.
You wouldve been better off with the triple, especially if youre a yankee/met fan living in NYC Dish doesnt have the YES channel OR SNY.
ALSO, if you have a 2nd TV, they are also giving away a free standard rental. So DVR, SD box, no monthly fee's.
Pretty sure this deal is still available. You should call and make a deal ! Nothing beats Verizon's TV service. | |

While overall happy in the quality of service, both in speed and reliability, it can be frustrating because speed tests will show excellent connectivity, however when doing something as simple as streaming from YouTube traffic continuously stalls (no matter the device or operating system).
For instance, as I write this google-gw.customer.alter.net (which is owned by Verizon) is showing a 57.3% packet loss (with 6271 packets tried for over an hour).

I had Time Warner for close to 20 yrs. They've been stiffing me on the double play package.. I was paying $150 a month and now $160 this last month! I also had vonage for $38. So almost $200 for a triple play! I finally said F*Ck this and ordered FIOS!
Had it installed yesterday and OMFG... What a difference!!! I'm not sure why FIOS gets so much slag. Maybe it's from people living in rural areas? My experience with them so far has been awesome! I got the triple play package with 50/25 mbps internet from Fios. The internet flies.. I get 62 MBS down and 24 MBS up I can download 1.9 GB Microsoft Service Pack 1 in less than 5 minutes at 7 MB/s. Picture quality also is much better than Time Warner... + MUCH MUCH more channels.. I get 9-12 showtime channels for free. (Not just a 3 month promotional deal) I also get 2 Fliks channels which come with the 89.99 package and 1 Movie channel! It's soooo much to watch.. It's like Night and day compared to Time Warner which has been stiffing me for years. (my own fault for not switching earlier)
As soon as I called to cancel Time Warner, I thought I wouldn't be able to get the rep off the phone. He tried beating the Verizon Deal....Not only did he try to beat the deals when I cancelled yesterday, but today I received a phone call from another agent trying to beat Verizon deals.. I was like WTF? I told the rep that I've been a customer for almost 2 decades and every time i call in to ask for a loyal customer discount you guys never lower my bill!! and now that I cancelled you guys want to give me a better deal? F*CK YOU!
I couldn't be more happier with Verizon (so far so good btw guys) Customer service with Verizon has been top notch!

Update 3-27-2013
Still completely satisfied with FIOS. My internet speeds have been moved to 50/35 and regularly test higher like 58 / 37 . I have the ultimate TV package, having all those HD movie premium channels is wonderful. At some point, the on-demand for Starz and Encore was fixed, its soooo much better than it was.
I gave back one of the DVRs and purchased a WD DVR expander hard drive. The 7232 DVR comes with a 500 GB hard-drive, and I added 1000, so in total, I have 1.5 TBs of recording space, more than enough. The installation of the external drive was a piece of cake. The 7232 requires an eSATA cord to connect the external. My OTHER DVR was a 7216, and that didnt have an eSATA port, it had a SATA port, so if someone wants to add an external to a 7216, they need a cord that is SATA on one end, eSATA on the other.
Update: 2-11-12
HD on-demand quality for Starz and Encore is still horrible, I dont even bother with it. The Free on-demand, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime On-demand is beautiful. Thats really my only complaint with the service The overall PQ of FiOS HD is amazing, especially on my 120Hz Vizio. Its almost TOO clear I think the HD is as good as my 1080p Blu-Ray or HD-DVD videos.
Everything else is still great. My 35/35 internet speeds are still coming in like 42 Mbps down , 34 up.
The new 1.9 software is awesome. Having two DVR's in the house is pretty cool. I can watch recordings from both DVR recodings from any box in the house. I may be connecting an external hard drive soon now that I have the updated software.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ive recently added a new 55" Vizio LCD and this thing looks AMAZING on FiOS. It looks better than my Pioneer Kuro.. as it should , its going on 4 years old. The picture is so clear its almost 3D'ish.
Since Ive gotten the service, it seems Ive gotten a boost in download speed and lost some upload speed. Not that I ever use this bandwidth but I occasionally run speed tests. Its pretty steady at ~ 42 mbps down and 30 up. »www.speedtest.net/result/1087423114.png
The HD on FiOS is FANTASTIC. My only complaint , and Im not sure its a Verizon issue, is that the Starz and Encore HD ON-DEMAND looks horrible... its a very blocky stream. HBO, SHOWTIME, TMC, EPIX , HD- on demand is beautiful.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was so frustrating seeing all my family and friends enjoying FiOS and I was stuck home with a POTS line, 1 Meg DSL and crappy pixelating Cablevision. My address was finally FiOS qualified.
The difference in TV picture is just awesome. The HD movie channels look as good as Blu-Ray to me. I have a 60" Pioneer Kuro and it simply looks amazing. If you watch too close to the TV you get dizzy ! Verizon has a ton more premium movie channels than cable , and the HD On-demand is awesome. I dont think Cablevision had any HD on-demand whatsoever. My wife is impressed with the picture on our regular Tv but to me, its not as dramatic of a difference as the HD. The multi-room DVR is great, its nice to watch recordings in the bedroom now.
As far as internet, Im just blown away. I downloaded a song in like 2 seconds last night from Itunes. Just amazing compared to the 1meg service I had. »www.speedtest.net/result/809056003.png
I ordered Verizon digital voice with unlimited calling to free myself of the additional taxes and fee's. The ONLY difference I have seen is the 10 digit dialing.. which isnt a big deal.
My estimate is about $260 a month for ALL CHANNELS (except porn) , 1 MRDVR, 3 HD , 35/35 internet, unlimited calling for home, and 2 cell phones.

 AJR @verizon.net | STAY AWAY We have had Verizon Fios, internet and digital phone for over a year. We can honestly say that we have never experienced such terrible customer services. They find every way to squeeze a few extra shekels from us. Their tv guide and dvr access are cluttered with their ads for up sells. Their customer service times are long and reps are untrained and rude. Their website is slow, frequently down, and focuses more on upselling vs. service. They make frequent mistakes, and it is always us who pays the price. All in all, I think some of what they are doing is plain illegal. But who is to fight a goliath like Verizon. STAY AWAY. | |

We moved in to our current home 5 years ago. I was a Road Runner customer for 10 years since that was ll that was available at my previous address. I had Fios installed a week after we moved in , after three days I cancelled Road Runner and have never regretted it. I have moved from the 25/15 ( actually 34/15-was the speed i was getting) tier to the current 150/75 ( really 164/75) . In those five years I have had one Actiontec router faill, one phone call and i picked up the replacement at a Verizon store the next day, plugged it in and was up and running in five minutes, its the only time I have had to deal with customer service and it was a ten minutes of troubleshooting with a tech, and then a quick visit to the Verizon store.

3-15-2013 Update: Verizon service in 2013 has really gone downhill. Over the past two months, I've had a plethora of problems, including massive internet slowdowns (downstream speeds were crawling at 3 Mbps), connection reliability issues, and high pings during peak hours. These issues were practically non-existent in 2012.
To make matters worse, the tech support has been abysmal as best. They insist on having me do 1 hour of "troubleshooting", including resetting the router, etc, before they'll even look at my issue. It's like they only know how to read through a script.
I'm lowering my review given the VERY poor service I have received from Verizon in the past 2 months.
----- My original review below for reference ----
I've had FiOS since December 2010, when I switched over from Time Warner. Initially, Verizon offered me FiOS for $55 per month for the first year, including DVR, Fios HD Extreme and 15/5 internet. This was by FAR cheaper than any of Verizon's competitors, so I jumped on the offer.
The main difference I noticed with FiOS vs. Time Warner was in:
1) Speed
2) Reliability
3) Latency
4) Service (tech and customer service line)
1) Speeds - The speeds are great, and faster than promised. I was initially getting 20/5 (vs. the 15/5 I paid for), but about a year ago, Verizon bumped that up to 24/5. This was MUCH better than what I had been getting at Time Warner, and the speeds were very consistent, which I didn't get with TWC.
2) Reliability - One of the biggest change I noticed from FiOS was the highly reliable internet speeds I received. Time Warner often went down late at night (usually around midnight) for some odd reason, and during peak hours, the service often slowed to a crawl. I'm guessing this has to do with the nature of copper and the software updates TWC needed to do on the head end. With FiOS, downtime became a thing of the past (mostly), although to be fair, it does go down on occasion, but only once in a blue moon.
3) Latency - My CO is two blocks away, and my pings to the first Verizon hop is around 6ms. This is probably due to my router being connected via MoCA vs. Ethernet, but either way, it's much better than the latency I got with TWC. My SpeedTest ping is around 10ms. With TWC, this would be around 20-30ms. Big difference a little fiber makes. That said, Verizon has become more popular in NYC, and my ping times are starting to increase and jump around. This is most noticeable during holidays, when most Manhattanites leave the city. My pings get as low as 7 ms around then, which implies some congestion issues going on. Hopefully Verizon fixes this soon.
4) Service - For me, this was the big clincher. First, let me start by juxtaposing my experience with Time Warner. Service with Time Warner was absolutely HORRIBLE. I dreaded calling their customer service line, as getting ahold of their customer service rep took at least 40 minutes, and I felt the reps gave very little care/attention into any of my questions or issues. When I called to cancel, TWC even claimed I never returned their modem (untrue), and wanted to charge me extra for a modem I had purchased myself. Furthermore, the field techs at TWC are all outsourced contractors who cared little about doing the job right and more about running to the next job. It was exactly how a business should NOT be run.
Verizon, on the other hand, was a 180 degree experience. I almost ALWAYS have received great service from their reps, and am rarely on hold for very long when I do have issues. In addition, the installers are all Verizon employees, and most have been with the company for a while (union workers) and do a MUCH better job with installs and follow-through. That said, I think some Verizon techs could work more efficiently and faster (my first install took a whole day, when i could've done it myself within 3 hours). I guess that's the curse of the unions, but at least they do a better job than the temps at Time Warner.
Cons:
Installation lead time - Since Verizon is a unionized company, installation may take a few weeks or more, and this is assuming all the fiber is already hooked to your premises. I live in a Manhattan apartment, so there's no trenching involved (buildings are wired with FiOS to each floor), but suburban homes are another story. To top things off, the Verizon union guys take their sweet time with installs (read above), and while they're usually very thorough, most of the cable competitors hire contractors that promise to install within two days. My FiOS installation took a 3 week lead time, which is on the border of being way too long.
Conclusion:
All said, I'm very happy with the service I've received from Verizon. I do have grips about the high cost, however. The naked internet starts at around $75/month, which is the SAME as internet / TV combo. Plus, Verizon's DVR is a whopping $17 a MONTH! Highway robbery, IMO. Given Verizon's rising prices, I'm tempted to try RCN, which is offering 50/5 internet for $35 / month, and TV/Internet TiVo combo for $90. I like FiOS, but money is money, and by switching Verizon may get the hint that competition does exist. But I'm afraid RCN's customer service may be as poor as Time Warner's, and I may be back in Verizon's camp before long. But at least then, I'll be treated as a new customer by Verizon, and might score some nice promotions Verizon throws at new customers to encourage them to switch, like the $55/month DVR/Internet combo package I received when I first signed up.

I'm guessing these issues are a result of the increased load since Verizon started heavily promoting the 50/25 plan, but that's just my theory. I'll post an update after everything is repaired, whenever that is. | |
|  |  |  |  antioch join:2007-10-06 Pomona, CA kudos:1 | Re: hey
I doubt the increased speed is the issue. I'd relate it to hardware or internal networking issues usually. I have not seen an increase of repairs due to Quantum speeds in California. Also if it was related to an overload in the network I think Dave would've mentioned seeing that in the area. -- Fiber Network Technician Pomona, CA | |

Finally last week they fixed the problem. After numerous calls, complains, & not giving up they finally took care of the matter. I was so angry with Verizon and I have no idea what causes those speeds to drop very low.

Hi, first review ever, please edit if I screw it up.
Overview: I had Comcast, but was hitting their data cap due to Steam downloads, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and online gaming. I have a good 200-300 games in my library, ranging from 1gig to 35gigs..
I *loved* Comcast's pings and consistent connections for online gaming, surfing and movie watching, and probably wouldn't have switched, but the cap just killed it.
So I picked up a Triple Play FIOS 35/35 package with Ultimate+premium channels and phone.
I'm now paying about $25/mo more than CC, have slightly higher speeds and no cap, but slower pings.
The good: The order process wasn't bad. I picked what I wanted on their website and set a date/time to do the install. Install took 3-4 hours tops and went smooth as far as I could tell. The installer was very polite too, if that matters.
My FIOS download speeds were consistent (*see update below). Every speed test was at least 34-35mbps, so that was nice.
And I love not having to worry about downloading 160gigs of games from Steam and/or watching too many movies in one month.
The bad: Sadly, my FIOS pings went up right away, but were at least stable (*at the time anyway, see below for update). Comcast was giving me 17-32ms pings to my fav game servers, but they jumped to 30-70ms after the switch to FIOS. It was tolerable but made me a bit sad and affected my play a little.
The update: The last few months (2 maybe?), things have changed in a few bad ways: - Pings are completely unpredictable. They vary wildly and I lose connection to game servers many times a day and have to re-connect, crossing my fingers that it loads the map and doesn't disconnect or hang, etc. It's actually pretty terrible.
- Websites are timing out constantly. Sometimes it gets halfway through loading a page and stops, forcing a refresh or four until it loads (but when it does load, it loads FAST, so I don't understand it at all.)
- I'm getting a LOT more buffering and freezing on Hulu and Youtube, sometimes requiring full-page refreshes. They were amazing before and part of the reason I took the leap to 35/35 in the first place (I got tired of 'buffering' messages with CC).
So here I am, trying to research and make sense of all this stuff and hopefully diagnose my own problem. (Past calls to other companies usually wastes time and never fixes anything.)
I also just renewed my 2yr with Verizon and got the 150mbps/(something?) package *hoping* it fixes my ping and timeout problems. If it doesn't, I'll be one sad camper out $220/month.
I hope I did this right and covered everything you asked for. I don't really know what brands/models i got. The cable box is black and has the code "QIP 7232 2" on the front and the router has the code "MI424WR".

Make sure u dont have torrents or something else running. Test I can tell u to try, turn off wifi and test just hardwire 1 PC. If you changed any settings in the router put it back to defaults. All that good stuff. If you call tech support there going to do that first thing. OUTSIDE of that do some tracert to some sites/servers that ur having issues with. If its anything outside the VZ network... not something tech support can fix. I know its a pain to call and u get someone who doesnt know how to turn a computer on, BUT if U do what u have to before calling theres always someone there smarter that you can talk to to take it from there. | |
