Last Update 09/29/2016:

Now a month removed from my "big move" to TN and thought I'll provide one last update. Verizon has been a class act to me. Never a problem. Never down time. Even when I went with faster speeds (150/150) it was ALWAYS consistently faster than advertised. Probably the best service I've ever had so far. Had the same old grey boxes till the end, but man did they go through a lot of software updates! They mailed me a free pre-paid box to ship the boxes back to them to make my life easier. I just received a check from Verizon yesterday as well for the remaining on my account as well. All ends as well as it began.

Current review updates: 05/03/2015

Really not much to update.. FiOS has just become ubiquitous in my home. Always works and just there. Upgraded to a faster 75/75 speed and got a new router/modem free. Speed increase was needed with everything being wireless. Still using same old TV boxes.

Good "Reliable, Fast, Better Than OOL, Best install tech ever !!"
Bad "NONE !!!"
Overall "Awesomely faster than cable !! More channels and faster speed FOR LESS!!"

I moved, called and had FiOS installed in May 2009...
The install tech was great and knew what he was doing. He wired everything by going though my attic so there are NO wires through out the house which is awesome!! By far, the best and cleanest install I've ever had. A cable tech quite simply does not compare..
The internet is def way faster than my cable was. The router is a great plus as well.
The T.V. is awesome as I have every channel and am paying less then when I had Optimum with no "premium channels", go figure
The phone... is just a phone lol..

I will update later if anything changes... but for now I am happy as a clam..
Getting what I am paying for..

Yep

I had service installed in 2008 and reside in Columbia MD. Pay for 50/50, and feel your comments are in line with my experience as well. This is the best consumer grade internet connection I have used. Aside from resolved peering issues that plagued my viewing of Youtube and less often Netflix, glad this is no longer an issue.

Had a choice of FIOS or Optimum. FIOS features and price had the edge, and I was pleasantly surprised when the products delivered exceed what was promised: 1. package is 15/5 MB/s (tier 1 plan ) , I am seeing 20/5. 2. Ordered 1 hd and 1 sd tv box, received 2 HD at no extra charge. 3. Wireless hotspot access supposed to be for next tier, it came with my order.

Install was quick, and the tech, was knowledgeable, friendly and worked quickly.

The only hitch so far is I cannot get WPA2 or even WPA to work on the router.
***Update***
The GUI is just VERY poor, the WPA2 was, in fact, working, but the web interface does
very strange things. The main wireless settings page only reflects the state of WEP, and if you enable WAP2 it shows no encryption. Anyway, it seems to work.

Router is an Actiontec MI424WR

Update:
2 billing cycles and no problems. So far I am very pleased with the products and services.

Update:
No issues yet.

Update 2011-10-6: Still good.

Update 2015-2-1: Still no troubles. I have had to wrangle with pricing on television service once in a while. Finally wound up signing 2 year contract, but price is back to where it started, and some decent channels were added. Also, my internet service was automatically upgraded to 15/15 from 15/5. No extra charge. Sandy aside, no outages either.

Update 2016-09-17: The internet service is still without issue. In fact, they just upgraded me to 50/50 and I see more like 55/55 Mbps. This upgrade also eradicated the "buffer bloat" problem I really only saw in the speed test here. Will need to see about re-negotiating 2yr contract in a few weeks.

You could turn off DHCP/NAT or set up DMZ on your gateway

and then connect your own router with wireless AP that does wpa/wpa2.

It might also be possible that your wireless card in your pc or built-in chip does not support higher encryption methods and may need to upgrade.

I'm paying about $113/month for a basic TV and 100/100 service. Not a fan of how to find help, but as long as you use somewhat up-to-date equipment, your going to have some amazing service.

I initially had FiOS installed in 2007. I believe the speeds were 25/10 for $124/month (business w/ static IP)

I upgraded to 150/150 with 2 phone lines and television in 2016. Cost is roughly $400/month for 150/150 w/ static IP, Ultimate Private viewing TV (3 HD boxes + CableCARD), and 2 phone lines (1 unlimited and 1 "plus" line)

The sales to install process was very simple. They had my account upgraded for television the very next day after placing the sales call to renew the contract for another 2 years.

The only downside is they make you use their router when you need tech support for the Internet side. They won't really help you without it. Another negative is when I wanted to return the rented router and provide my own that I bought. (Quantum Gateway, only used for the STBs to get the data they need) It took several phone calls after they received the rented router back for them to remove the rental from the account.

The positive is the service is highly reliable. I will never switch to Cablevision. Verizon only had a few short outages over the course of the past 9 years (since 2007) All outages were short, with the exception of one back in 2013 when it was out for 6 hours. (Fiber cut in the area) I would recommend anyone to get FiOS if it's available in their area.

i had directv and cablevision for internet and hated both companies. as soon as i found out fios was available i ordered the service without hesitation. had it for over a year and no regrets. i've always had the 20/5 package for $45 and don't feel a need to upgrade. when my wife and i bought the house in Jan 07 i ran all new coax, cat6, and phone wire throughout the home, so when the installers came they pretty much didnt have to run anything except for the fiber. all homeruns in the basement and thats where the ont, router, and pretty much all the service equipment is. took about 4 hours for the install. the only bad experience i had was the hd-dvr having to be replaced once because of an hdmi issue. other that that all is good. UPDATED 7/2016: i pay $270 a month for phone, all the channels including playboy, 25/25 internet and 2 cells with unlimited data.

Brian from Verizon did a great job installing it at my CPA office. He did a careful job and explained things as he was going through the various installation steps. Give yourself the entire day for installation. It will take hours, trust me on that. After it was installed I immediately went to dslreports.com and tested the speed. I ordered 15/2 but it was provisioned for 5/1 and Brian had to contact the tech people and have it reset. This took all of ten minutes. The phone is connected to the fiber optic line and the sound quality of our regular telephones is excellent. I used Covad as our DSL provider and Covad did a fine job (still use them for my other office) but the Verizon FIOS product is far superior and half the price. I am waiting for their television product to come out once they jump over the various regulatory hurdles. Verizon has been criticized for spending a lot of money for the FIOS product but I think they made the right decision.

Having used it for one year with a very sophisticated computer all I can tell you is that I am more productive as I do a fair amount of work from this location in Pennsylvania. TV service is excellent as well.

Re: Pre-sales?

I ordered 15/2 and they told me all along that would be speed but the order form the technician had showed that I had ordered only 5/1 speed which is what most people order and it is the default in their system. Not a big deal as they literally push a switch and the speed is as advertised.

Written June 2016 by which time we had been a Triple Play customer(s) for two years and then switched to a double play contract in June 2016

We started out with a Triple Play bundle in June 2014 under two-year contract for about $95/month including taxes. In June 2016 we switched to a Double Play package and ported our phone to PhonePower using Obihai hardware. Service is still 100% reliable and we pay (because my wife signed up) under the bonus/special price for new customers, about $75/month including taxes. Phone works out to be about $15/month (including costs for equipment purchased from Amazon [Obihai] and one year plan with Phonepower including taxes). So we came out a few dollars ahead in the long run.

Install - the original Verizon techs in 2014 did a fine job but refused to help me set up the ActionTec Router as a Bridge for my Linksys 1900 router...however, the tech in June 2016 was happy to leave my set-up as is...and for that I am extremely happy.

Good experience: the technology works 100% and is reliable 100% - in these first two plus years.

The order process for Verizon is a little confusing, because the ordering the same set of services can end up costing at least three different prices depending on how it's placed. I ended up placing and cancelling three different orders before finally getting the cheapest price per month (first by phone, then online, then online via an affiliate discount). It took about a month from the order to install because Verizon was on strike at the time. Luckily I didn't need service right away, and the strike ended by the time I got my install.

When the install date came, I received a phone call from the installer in advance. My installer, Joe, was great and very experienced (almost 20 years on the job). He gave me his card at the beginning and told me I could call him if anything went wrong with the service. He did a great job, took a great deal of care in his work, and was one of the best install jobs I had seen. The only hiccup we had was that I was requesting a non-standard install: I was refusing the Verizon router, and using my own along with a MoCA bridge for the set top box data. He had never seen this type of install before and argued that it wouldn't work. It did work, but I don't blame him since I was probably the only person who had ever requested this type of install.

After the install, speed tests ran at 100/120 Mbps for my 100/100 package, and ping times were as low as 2 ms for some NY servers. Connection quality / speed is great, although Verizon could overprovision more. Comcast and Optimum overprovision 15-20% more download than the advertised bandwidth, while Verizon seems to provision exactly at the advertised bandwidth for packages 100 Mbps and above.

Overall, I think FiOS is a great product if you can get it in your area. The only downsides to FiOS are primarily on the economic side of things: getting the best price while ordering can be confusing and there are lots of below-the-line fees tacked onto your package price, along with the need to sign a 2 year contract to get the best deals. Despite this, I would still rate FiOS as the best internet product I've used to date.

Overprovisioning

My experience with FiOS overprovisioning speeds in MD:

50Mbps will get about 57 down / 63 up.
75Mbps will get about 84 down / 93 up.
150Mbs gets about 158 down / 161 up.
300Mbps gets about 318 down / 348 up.
500Mbps gets about 515 down / 570 up.

Re: Overprovisioning

The upload fluff is a lot more than download, that's for sure. I've read in the forums that download for 100+ tiers is provisioned pretty much exact to your level, and that's been my experience so far on the 100 tier. What are you testing at right now and on what package? And how did you obtain that data? You spend a day just re-provisioning your ONT?

affiliate discount

What is this affiliate discount of which you speak, and can I get one? We currently have FiOS for internet and phone, are not currently under contract, and are looking to move our TV over to FiOS as well.

Re: affiliate discount

Verizon has affiliate discounts through various organizations. Most commonly it's through your job, although I got mine through AAA. It's -5 for a double play and -10 for a triple play. See »ATTN: AAA customers can now save!
