Three weeks go, a girl came to my door and asked "would you like to try Verizon FiOS for $29.95 a month?" I was paying $45/month for Adelphia cable so I figured what the heck?

Since I used VoIP, they couldn't find my address in their records but they took the order over the phone and told me they'd call me back with an install date. 5 days later, they hadn't called. I called back and the tech on the phone told me "yea, that happens more often than not" and set up an install date. (the reason for the 4's on the pre-sales and install coordination). Today, they pulled it off without an issue.

Here's the details:
- Tech arrived at 9:15am and was done at 11am.
- ordered 5MB down 2MB up service. Actual speed - 5MB+ down and 1.8MB up. The installer stated beforehand that every install he's done he's only seen 1.8MB up. When I switched to the Linksys though, it droped to 3.5mb down and 1.8mb up.
- PPPoE - yes (boo). Installer states that all installs ordered starting next week won't have PPPoE. I hope they remove it from my connection also (it seems to work without it - I need to test more though).
- Outside address is registered (good)
- Hardware VPN works over the link (good)
- VoIP works without an issue. (good)

The installer was professional and I had no issues. He was happy the house was wired ahead of time (probably why the install didn't take as long). I was happy that I was able to plug everything into my existing system and it worked like a charm.

I'm still trying to find out about the speed difference between the D-Link and Linksys routers. Either way, I'm getting better speeds than I had with my previous provider for $15 less a month. I think you can call that a deal. .

PPPoE Vs DHCP

You may be provisioned to "swing both ways". If so, it would be interesting to see speed test results for both PPPoE and DHCP to compare the difference.....

I'll have to test that out. I have to take time to hook the crappy D-Link router up again

Re: PPPoE Vs DHCP

One reason is that even though D Link is cheap a** product but Verizon got these tested in their labs and D Link makes special firmware to boost Fiber Optics Speed. I've heard that before that D Link showed great speed yet a nice Linksys could not handle that. Special Firmware is the key.

Linksys router bottleneck

Either somewhere on the forums here or on one of the Linksys fanboy web sites various tests concluded that earlier versions of the WRT54G family of routers seemed to max out somewhere around 7Mb/s. The internal packet switch simply could not shovel packets out fast enough. But the latest WRT54GS uses a different operating system and I think different hardware so it should behave differently.

In any case, you proved that there must still be a difference between the Linksys and D-Link once again, as there is clearly a difference in throughput. It doesn't do much good to get 15 or 20Mb/s download service if your router can only handle half of that.

Well I have been waiting until I got back home to finally order FiOS, and I am glad I did. After being on the 768k/128k down/up plan with Verizon DSL for three years (At the 30/month price to boot!), it was time to blow that speed away for the same price.

The install date was scheduled for a week after my order take place for the 5/2 mbps down/up plan at 34.95 (with $5/mo for a year discount for being a DSL customer). After taxes and whatnot it is around $31-32/mo. I mean the free install and wireless router are worth paying even 40/mo in my opinion.

The install went really well. The installer was worried about damaging the exterior of my house but did not, and was a very kind guy. I setup what I could as far as the router was concerned, and besides the fact we had a little issue getting the configuration complete on the activation screen, it was a complete success and was very redeeming. The install took three hours, though the installer accidently hooked the wrong phoneline (I have an old phone line) into the ONT (I told him the phone in my house was ringing, and he was like "No way, you have no dial tone" later on he discovered he hooked the wrong wire in and we had a good laugh about it). The BBU was installed in the basement, and the drilling was done excellently. He ran the cat5 cable up my house and through two rooms. I found that to be a definite plus (I even helped -- one nice thing about being a CCNA).

All in all a few days out and it has never been down, the download speed is overprioritized and usually matches the shortcomings up the upload (Overall I've been averaging around 7mbps total bandwidth in/out), so I'd say the supplied bandwidth meeting mean throughput pretty well.

If you are in the mood to dump DSL and can get FiOS, or are tired of cables horrible upload, get FiOS. FTTP is the future. My gaming ping is so low, and doing work from home has never been better!

One great news is Verizon is bumping the speeds from 5/2 to 10/2 on same price. They have already done that in three markets and getting ready to do in all markets. So far only in east coast.

3 meg down

I'm a verizon fios tech in the northern VA area. You only get 3 meg down with your linksys router because it probably only has a 10 meg Wan port. The router provided with the service has 100 meg Wan port. I would recommend using the D-link if at all possible, or upgrading to a newer linksys router.

For 3 years, I have used Optimum Online. When I got it in 2003 it was way better than DSL and was really fast...for a while. Recently, they have started having dropped connections, and on top of that they keep raising rates. So I turned to the other option...FIOS!!! I was fed up and finally convinced my dad to order FiOS on 5/14/06. Tech came on scheduled installation day on 5/18 right on time, good for me too since I "took a day off" from school. So he came and took a look around the utility room and decided where the BBU and PS should go. The ONT was mounted on the side of my house, and he brought the fiber from the pole to the house. Everything went as planned and around the time he wanted to activate the fiber, the tech found out that the pole he took the fiber from was not on Verizon's map. So we waited 2 hours to get in contact with Verizon but eventually things got straightened out and we finished the installation at 2 p.m. He installed the router and activation stuff on the main PC. This took some time since my brother's Dell is so inefficient, (unlike my Mac, =) But that finshed and he asked if I wanted the MSN and Yahoo stuff, etc. but I prompted no.

So using the FiOS for 4 days, the 20/5 tier is amazing. But after my free month is over I will downgrade to the 10/2 tier. I download a lot, but most servers and torrent swarms aren't fast enought to handle 20mbps. But in time, I guess the Internet will catch up to our monstrous FiOS connections. The service is extremely reliable, fast, and most of all affordable. I get a $5 discount since I'm on the Verizon Freedom Plan for my cell phone bringing my $44.95 to $39.95. Once I downgrade to 10/2, it will be $29.99. It might be a bit slower, but I was paying a regular price of $45.99 for Optimum Online which barely hung around at 3mbps. So getting more than 3 times the speed at half price is a no brainer!

As for the router, it doesn't have much range. My Mac is in my room which is on the opposite side of my house of the router. I got around 7mbps with the D-Link so I bought a Linksys WRT54G which gave me full range but speeds around 10 mbps. The wired Dell gets full 20mbps. I don't know if its my Mac or the router, but I think it has something to to do with my computer.

Bottom line is get FiOS if it's available to you. On an interesting notes, my ONT has a coaxial cable output. The tech mentioned in time when FiOS TV is available, they will hook up the existing coaxial wiring in the house to the ONT. This would eliminate the need for a NIM like the early users had and would save money for Verizon. I aksed to the tech when would FiOS TV be available, he said around the end of the year it would be available. Recently, New Jersey has passed the franchise bill so we might get it sooner!

FIOS is great. I can't complain about anything. I have it since December and so far I haven't had any problems. get it while installation and wireless router are free.
Verizon did miss first installation appointment, but I got an extra free month for that.

They do mess up you lawn a little, but if you call them they will come out and fix everything. They broke my sprinkler system (it was impossible to find sprinkler heads in a winter), but once I called them 2 days later they came out and fixed
everything. I play CounterStrike and my ping went from 80 ms down to 5ms.

I waited a year after getting this service to write this review. I didn't want to write it after just a few weeks because i don't think thats a true test of any service.I had OOL for three years and it was really good for the first two. Then as the speeds started to change and when they would not say they did anything i started looking around. I found that Verizon had run the Fios cable right in my back yard. I was to far from the CO to get DSL and hated the big phone bills so I dropped Verizon 2 years before and had OV and OOL.. i called Verizon and told them I didn't have Verizon phone service but I wanted the Fios data service. I waited for them to say no you need to take the voice to get Fios but that never happened. they said NO PROBLEM we can install the Fios and later if you want to add voice great if not thats fine also. There is also NO CONTRACT, at all.

Well they came and did the install that took about 4 hours and I was up and running. At first i ordered the 15mb down 2mb up package but a week later they said since I was in a OOL area they could give me the 30mb down 5mb up for $5.00 more. Not that i really need it but for $5 i said sure. That night i came here and did speed test and sure i had 29.9 down and 4.5 up.. It was so easy dealing with them(yes this is verizon i'm talking about) that i ordered there voicewing service (VOIP) and ported my OV number over. As soon as the port was done I turned off my OOL and OV service and have never looked back.

I have 2 Xbox 360's(1 hard wired and 1 wireless) / 3 computers(1 hard wired and 2 wireless) plus VOIP Phone service all running and I have had them all running at the same time for hours.. NO lag NO Drops and NO CAPS at all... I didn't have to install any MSN or Yahoo software and I couldn't use there home if I want but I kept the one I had and just added a link to theres on it.

I just pay my bill and get the service I paid for nothing more nothing less and thats just fine by me....

Re: voicewing

I would say so. The just lowered the price to 29.95 to compete with Vonage and other VOIP providers. They just started to install fiber on my block. Im so excited, I've been dealing with 786K speed because I refuse to give CV my money. I also heard that Verizon has been approved by NY PSC as far as TV is concerned. Installations should start in July !

I also think so.. It works great with Fios.. The one thing i did was switch out my Linksys 54G router for there D-link 54G router. the reason is that they have firmware that is setup for there fiber network and i am getting MUCH better speeds with the wireless router that came with Fios then my own Linksys one. The Voicewing also works much better with it.. With the Linksys I needed to put the VOIP in the DMZ but with theres it just works fine..
