I had a nice run with verizon DSL from 2002 to now (Nov. 2011)
but just found out that FIOS phone/internet/tv was finally available
in my neighbor so I jumped on it. For being a long term, happy, and loyal
Verizon customer since 2002 here's what I got for a total of
$101 a month for six months then an extra $6 a month after 12 months for the HD set top box.
25/25 internet (I'm consistently getting 30/25 - no complaints there!)
(Encore-Showtime-Starz-Cinemax free for 12 months)
Unlimited Digital Voice Telphone

I'm really happy with this deal because prior to this I was paying a total of $110/month for: Verizon premium hi speed internet 15/1 connection, outdated verizon analog phone package that offered local calling only (sucked), and Directv dish family package (their cheapest package).

Fiber directly to your home , very reliable and constant rates. No bandwidth caps (for now) and easily the best TV service.
A tad expensive. Very location dependent , contracts are a must for acceptable rates.
Probably the best ISP/TV combo you can have unless you are lucky enough to have a community based fiber setup with 1GBPS speed.

I've had the service for about a month and half.

My experience has been excellent so far. My speeds are consistent and in fact greater than advertised ( I have the 35/35 package but I get 45/30). Coming from a bandwidth capped service is liking seeing the light and never having to worry about usage.

Internet connection is low latency , fast and reliable. Best I've had so far. TV service is excellent and looks amazing compared to Comcast/At&t U-verse. Verizon tech support isn't well known for being amazing but my experiences have been reasonable so far.

I really wanted 150/75 speed package but its only offered in select areas do to the requirement of additional hardware. After having U-Verse service in Duluth , GA for 3 years FiOS is everything that U-Verse promised it would be but could never actually be.

I highly recommend it to anyone that can get the service. Sadly its highly limited and most will not be able to get it. Verizon isn't expanding out its FiOS network anymore so anyone hoping to get it has little to no chance at this point unless they do a 180 on the matter.

Update 12/11/2011 - Well I'm still loving the network , zero down time and my speeds remain the same 24/7. I just can't state it enough , even with Verizon's weirdness about billing and installs this is without a doubt the best overall service you can get. If you can get it , get it ... but don't expect Verizon to build out to you. They just announced they are done doing that so if you plan to move somewhere near a FiOS area call in advance and see if its where you plan to move.

Update 1/10/2012 - Upgraded to the 150/35 package , was a very simple install and took about 30 minutes (the tech had to run Cat5e into the house to the router since its beyond the spec of MOCA). I also got the Extreme HD package and Voice for a bundle off for about 65 more a month than I'm paying right now. So far this new speed is only being offered in NY, NJ and NYC from what I can tell but perhaps it'll be offered in your area.

Its incredible to download big games off Steam (16+ gigs) in about 11 minutes. I simply love it.

Downside of this speed package is you MUST buy it via a bundle , you can't get the upgrade without it and you have to do a 2 year contract so think about that before you jump in (the cancelation fee for leaving early is $250).

I really FiOS service , the tech that's been taking care of me even gave me his personal cell number incase I have any issues , really above and beyond what Comcast or At&t U-Verse ever offered me.

Here is a pic of my speed (this speed is 24/7 , not a fluke or a better than average result .. suck it Optimum Online).

I feel the same way at this point and time

your statement here sums up my feelings on the matter. The service isn't that cheap but it's hard for me to switch to anyone else because there is nothing else with this kind of 24/7 same "speed-ness". For lack of a better word.

Current:
Verizon FIOS Triple Play: $139.99 for 24/mo
Ultimate HD + HBO/Cin Combo + Movie Completer
Digital Voice
150/35 (provisioned as 150/65)

1/13/2012 - The upgrade to 150/65 was rather painless. I had some issues with my own internal wiring creating some crosstalk. Took all of 15m to provision, 30m to find and fix the cable problem, now working great!

12/10/2011 - I moved and brought my FIOS with me. New "inside" Motorola GPON installed in attic instead of outside box. Got "new customer" deal with the move - NYDMA priced package $114.99 for UltiHD+HBO+Cin+Completer, Digital Voice, 35/35. Took about 3 hours all told. Was even able to keep my number in a different area code for an additional $5.00. Got the new 7232 DVR too, spiffy, love the full HD menus.

History:
I've had FIOS since sometime in 2006 and have never wanted anything else since. I originally started home service on Verizon DSL, then switched to Optimum iO broadband. As soon as FIOS became available, I switched back to Verizon and have never regret my decision. I originally only had a double-play (phone/internet) with the 50/50 service for $200/mo, one of the few residences to have it (they marked my account some weird hybrid commercial). I then moved to a triple play at 25/25 for $140, then upgraded at some point to 35/35 at the space price. For the most recent see above.

Older History:
First BBS - 1986, 300baud modem.
First UNIX box on Internet - 1993 with a full time dial-up SLIP from UUNet for $350/mo.

I have had Optimium Online in the past but wanted to try the 'double play' FIOS with 25/25 throughput. Has rarely been less than that when tested and have not had service interruption for the two months I've had the service. The multi-room DVR works well but could use larger HD space for more program storage (about 22 hours HD on mine), it seems less that what I have gotten with Optimum or DirecTV. Just got new firmware allowing external storage last night though.

The installation went well - professional and clean install in an apartment.

The price is good for the service, premium channels and equipment without a contract commitment. I wouldn't change my decision from what I've seen so far.

Some info on extending your DVR storage.

You can buy an external ESATA hard drive to expand your DVR storage : »store.westerndigital.com ··· 13094600

That adds 120 hours more of HD recordings and 600 hours of standard definition recordings.

For $99.99 , pretty nice considering.

1/10/2012

It's been a number of years since my last update. I'm still on FIOS, and I'm still a happy customer. During the first year or two of service, I would get an occasional outage that required a power reset of the ONT (if I recall, this was a known Verizon issue/bug at the time.) But I think that's in the past; I honestly can't recall an extended outage for quite some time.

The last time I had to contact support was about 2 years ago. I was getting a lot of dropped packets and browsing was almost impossible. They sent a tech out within a day or two, and he replaced my FIOS router (which was apparently one of the first models/editions they offered.) Since then, there have been no problems to report.

We have 3 people in the house that use the internet connection with their phones/laptops/hardwire connections, and it's been great for us. I may be moving in the next year to a place that doesn't offer FIOS, and I'm betting that I'm going to really miss the reliability and speed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------

Just switched over to FIOS last week, and I'm a happy camper. I had been pondering a switch for some months, and the only thing that was holding me back is Verizon's stance on running personal servers (they're not allowed). I decided I could live without my personal mailserver, and made the jump.

From order date to install date was 7 days (I ordered via the website). Not bad. I knew what to expect as far as installation from reading DSLreports.com, but Verizon also sent me an email with some good links that went through the process. I also got an automated voicemail reminding me of the installation date.

As for as the actual install, the tech showed up around 9:30AM (I had an 8AM-12PM window). I showed him where I wanted everything to be mounted/plugged in, and he did his thing. I also requested ethernet from the ONT rather than coax, and he obliged. The install took about 4 hours in total, and I sort of got the feeling that he was rushing to get out of there towards the end. When I went downstairs to the laundry room after he left, the ActionTec router was sort of just laying on a shelf, and the ethernet jack was laying next to it (not mounted to anything). The ONT and backup battery unit were all mounted properly, just the ActionTec and it's jack that were sloppily laid aside.

The tech watched me do a speedtest (which got the full 30MB down/5MB UP), and then promptly left. I don't know how to set up my Verizon email address or look at my bill...guess I'll have to go through the array of booklets he left. I don't know, maybe there was happy hour that he wanted to get to, but it just seemed like the tech wanted to make tracks.

After the tech left, I found out that one of my TV's wasn't getting a satellite signal (still using DirecTV for TV...gotta have the Sunday Ticket in my household). I figured that the Verizon tech had accidentally cut/knocked loose one of the DirecTV RG6 cables during the FIOS install. I called Verizon later that night, and the first support tech said it wasn't their problem and I should call DirecTV. I called right back, and convinced a second tech to start a trouble ticket. The next day, a new Verizon tech came out and helped me check all of the RG6 cables and connections on the side of house where they did the FIOS install the day before. We couldn't find any cuts/dislodged cables, so he hypothesized that perhaps it was just a coincidence that the DirecTV stopped working during the FIOS install. At any rate, I was satisfied that they sent someone back out, that honestly wanted to help resolve my problem. Otherwise they would have got a lower "install coordination" score.

(DirecTV came out shortly afterwards and replaced some RG6 cabling/connectors...I don't know for sure if we'll ever know whether the FIOS installation was the root cause of the problem or not, but I have a gut feeling it was since DirecTV had been working flawlessly for 2+ years prior to that day.)

I was planning on putting the ActionTec router they left into bridge mode, and using my D-Link as the wireless AP/firewall, but I've since gone into the ActionTec config, and found that it has most everything I need. For now, it seems solid and I'm going to leave my D-Link unplugged. I put in my WPA settings and password, and the ActionTec is serving up my wireless laptops with no issues. I'm glad I didn't have to reconfigure the wireless settings on the laptops, because I a few friends that come by now and then that already have all the pre-populated settings.

It's been about a week since I've had FIOS installed, and the speed and reliability are great. At this point in time, I think FIOS is the best deal for the money, and I hope it stays that way for a long time.

Upgraded to the Ultimate HD plan due to the addition of Cinemax to the package. Having a landline is a nice perk, especially with the lack of cell service in the house. $135 for phone internet and tv, a great deal compared to Charter and Comcast in the area.

Install took 5 hours, tech knew what he was doing and went above and beyond to get a issue with the line corrected that day. The new Cisco boxes with 1.9 have been very nice, especially the 500gb DVR.

Will never go back to cable, but would consider Satellite again only for the increase in HD offerings.

UPDATE 1-7-12: Reading my last post was pretty funny. I've dumped FiOS for good as of two weeks ago. Went with Optimum instead. I'm saving an avg of $165/mo with only losing my premium movie channels and one cable box. I got SO sick of paying $225/mo PLUS another $30/mo for Vonage. FiOS quality is superb and should not be mistaken for any other provider. Just depends where your interests lie. If you have a fam with kids and everyones TV hungry, then go for it you'll love it. Me? I stopped watching premium channels and only watch the family cable channels so it worked out. Enjoy!

Update 4-25-10: Okayy well after being incorrectly billed since January, Verizon FiOS will not even honor the deal or price they gave me back in January. Their voice service which was supposed to be $23/mo ended up being offered to me again when I called about the billing problem at $60/mo. So i cancelled the service and I'm going back to Vonage. Can't wait! All we need to do now is wait for a better HD and Web service to come around so I can dump Verizon for good!

UPDATE 2-10-10: Its been more than a month after my voice service has been active and once again verizon has proved to be useless. After activation, they never sent me a bill, never combined my payment with my TV and Internet bill, and DID NOT bump me up to the 25/15 service i was promised with this new triple play. Not only that, but I have no record of voice installation, or that I even have the service active, no way to check my call activity online, and when I send emails to ask about this issues, they refer me to the call center, where NO ONE answers the phone. I just called in now because I finally had some time, and the call centers are closed due to an "emergency"....i hope they don't mean these flakes we got today. As soon as something with equal or better quality comes to my attention, I'm dropping this garbage company as my utility company. Dealing with their ignorance is unbelievably nauseating. STAY AWAY.

December 28th 2009 UPDATE: Well after about four years of FIOS service i couldn't be happier. I now have all three services with verizon FIOS. TV, Internet, and as of 1/8/10, i'll have unlimited VOIP phone service also. Everything is great with all three services and every premium channel available my bill is just over $200/mo, and that's for 5 HDTVs with DVRs. I must also add that customer service still remains TERRIBLE...i mean DISGUSTINGLY TERRIBLE. If they didn't have good products and the best picture and easily accessible equipment for my current home conditions, not only would I cancel in a heartbeat, but I would sue and refuse to pay. I think about their tech support, customer service, ability to reach ANYONE, and the accessability of their online customer page and I get nauseous. if you have a tech support issue or want to add service be prepared with a coffee and newspaper to wait for these guys to answer the phones...i can't believe how VERIZON of all companies has issues with getting someone on the other end of the phone.... I'm even getting my internet bumped up to 25/15 because of adding phone service. I recently swapped two of my regular boxes to DVRs and they both came defective and were not able to be activated.... then they sent the wrong replacement boxes...things like this should be expected.

7/20/07 UPDATE-- I can tell an ISP is good when i get trouble free service and forget about what i have. I have been getting 100% blazing speeds, i'm actually paying $39 a month not $44 or $49 as stated in the first review post. I dont know why i'm being charged $39 instead of $49 i think its because somehow there was confusion in the order and i got one of the lower tier internet plans instead of one of the highest. Still the speeds are much much much much faster than with Optimum Online cable. No modems to reset and play with after a power outage, i dont have to come back and reset things...just trouble free constant service. Still haven't figured out how to use my own router...lol...but theirs works just fine with great range.

After my kick butt service with FiOS internet, i subscribed to FiOS TV when it came out in my area, and have had trouble-free service with THAT service also...i will review that separately one day. All in all, for $39/mo it is a great buy. I am very happy with it. I recommend it to everyone. Oh...customer service is terrible....once i tried to reach them to ask about my second bill because it was higher than usual (it was prorated) and i swear that i tried to contact them about internet and tv bill from 10 am to 3pm. I was just with my friends and every 10 mins i would call them and i promise i couldn't reach ANYONE for around 6 hours...i only got "hints" from people from sales....never did get anyone from billing. So....yeah. But its the kind of service that you dont really need to talk to tech support or cust. service. And since i only made one attempt to reach them, i dont want to lower the review rating...everyone and every company has their bad days. Thanks for reading everyone. Good luck. -Shawn

Well

Hello all! Its been a while since i've changed internet services but on 12/11/06 i decided i couldn't deal with Optimum Online anymore. Between the service, modem, and especially the billing issues, i thought it was time to move on.

I ordered Verizon FiOS (20DL/5UL) online and i was suprised when i saw how early they could come and install it. It could have been done 2 days after but i had an appointment then. The installer called me and let me know very kindly that he will be coming along within 30-45 mins. When he came he was very very helpful giving me advice and he didnt get right to work he made sure to find the best possible spot to install everything and run wires. It is hard to explain the installation details but the installer even managed to run the CAT5 wires where i used to have it UNDERNEATH my second layer of shingles on the side of the roof. He did such a good job hiding all the wires, i have honestly never experienced such a clean install. Oh yeah and installation time was from 10AM to about 2PM.

After the install we set everything up. The only thing i didnt like is you have to download a verizon program that "activates" the service but at the same time puts things i dont want in my computer. Like Internet Explorer VERIZON FiOS customizations and stuff. Which is okay i have to reformat that computer anyway.

After setup i did some DSLR speed tests and wowzer, i was running even faster than the advertised speed that i ordered. I usually run about 22000/4900. I just checked the verizon FiOS page and saw that the monthly price has been raised to $49.99 for my service package. I dont know if that will be the actual price. This must be something new but it is still a good value. I get like 9 email accounts and a static ip too i believe.

I am waiting until my 1 year contract on my DirecTV service is up then i am switching to Verizon FiOS TV. It seems with their On Demand and channel lineups that is a much better value as well.

Thanks for reading! -Shawn

There is a better tv service

Switch to Dish and just keep fios internet, much better tv and customer service. The equipment is much better than the crappy fios stuff. I will never bundle with a company again, just allows them to provide poor service since they have you captive.

Re: There is a better tv service

yesss i agree. I had DirecTV twice in the past 5 years...i enjoyed it except for the fact that it goes out in rain and snow. Which is realllly aggrivating. Also price its a few bucks more per month without all the international channels i have. Unfortunately Dish Network isn't avail because of all the trees around here...

Ordered package:
- Basic Cable, std def, one STB + Broadband.
- Broadband speed contracted: 15/5
- ActionTec router. (I've added my own Cisco type N router).
- Price 2 years ago: about $95 with tax
- There was no contract, just a 2 year period during which they would guarantee the price.

Actual speed:
20/5 minimum. On occasion I get much higher speeds.

Have had a one technical problem with TV service. Inside Tech Support was polite but incompetent. They had to send me 3 replacement STBs before they could send out a field tech. The field tech identified and solved the problem quickly.

Broadband never goes down.

Verizon just bumped the price from $95 / mo to $105 / mo (including tax). I called them up and said "You're offering a much better price to new customers - how about offering me the new customer price". They said "nope". So, loyalty gets you nothing - they'd rather spend a ton acquiring new customers (they bombard me with promo mailers!).

I'll probably jump ship for one year. TWC is offering the same price as my old price, includes HD service and HD DVR and decent channel line up. Unfortunately, TWC broadband is not likely to be anywhere near as fast / reliable.

I currently live in an area where i can get comcast or Armstrong cable, FIOS, and obviously Satellite TV. I still have Comcast Internet and Digital cable. I decided to try FIOS TV, Internet and Phone. I signed up for FIOS 25/15 Internet package and get exactly that during speed tests and sometimes a bit more. Install was straight forward and done in an hour. I do not like the combination router/wireless access point but I can work around that issue to use my own router. Speed is amazing and calls are perfect. TV is great with 70 HD channels. Extra set top boxes are pricey at $19 per TV, but you can opt for just a $7 converter without PPV, guide, and on demand if you wish.

As long as the service stays the way it is and the bill amount doesnt change from month to month as I have heard has happened to many other Fios customers I will keep them around.

I guess I am lucky to have options which many people do not.

After 6 months of service all is still great. No issues with any services noticed.
