Consistent and happy.

I have FiOs Gigbit. Hardwired ethernet to the router I was getting about 980/940.
But my office is on the opposite side of the apt. So my wifi speeds dropped to 150/80. So I bought the Verizon Actiontec WCM6200 bridge connected via coax back to the router. I get consistent 480d/475u on ethernet to the bridge, and 400/380 over wifi with it. Which is respectable given it's coax and not ethernet.

Pretty amazing.

Great ISP! I'm paying $80/month for 1000/1000 Mbps and speed tests have verified that I am receiving that level of service.

I ordered 50/50 (Internet only, no TV or phone service) and got at least that much in download and almost that much in upload. The initial contract was $30/month for the first year and $40/month for the second year.

I ordered the service a little under two weeks before moving to my new home, which was FiOS-ready. The first available installation date was a couple days after the move. The technician arrived late because his previous job had taken much longer than expected. He was helpful but a little harried; in any case, he got everything set up pretty quickly (including an Ethernet connection to the router instead of the default coax) and all is well.

I decided to save myself some money in rental fees by buying an Actiontec MI424WR (Rev. I) router on eBay. I later replaced it with my own ASUS router which has worked fine.

The service worked more or less perfectly for 18 months and then we started having major speed issues. The phone tech support people ran through a bunch of tests to try to isolate the problem and concluded it was a problem on Verizon's end. But due to Verizon's poor interdepartmental relations, it took repeated phone calls over the course of a week to actually get someone to come to our house to fix it.

UPDATE, Nov. 2018: For the past year or so we've been paying $50 a month after some of our discounts expired. However, our speed has just been doubled to 100/100 at no additional charge.

UPDATE, Aug. 2020: The service has remained stable. Locked in $39.99/month for two years with auto-pay and paperless billing.

UPDATE, Oct. 2020: Upgraded to 200 Mbps service at the same cost ($39.99/month) with auto-pay and paperless billing, and no longer locked into a contract. Based on a speed test it looks like I am actually getting 300 Mbps at the moment!

UPDATE, May 2022: Verizon has officially upgraded us to 300 Mbps at no extra charge (though we were already getting that speed consistently since 2020). The service has been reliable except for occasional unexplained after-midnight outages.

UPDATE, Dec. 2023: Our monthly service fee has been increased to $43.99.

Started off with FiOS in 2008 and never looked back. It's been solid with our family TV/Internet/Phone bundle, and you can usually shimmy your way to a (somewhat decent) discount on it all.

Family business has Spectrum... It's all they can get. The minute FiOS expands closer towards the city we're switching.

Moved out in 2021 and ordered FiOS gigabit internet at the new apartment, no issues whatsoever.

Update 8/2023: Moved back and still the same solid reliability as before.

I moved from Optimum to Verizon Fios both for the speed increase as well as the price. I pay $75.00/Mo with no contract.

I ordered the service and 2 days later a tech arrived and installed the fiber cable to my apartment and hooked up the VZ ONT. I connected it to my Synology Router and all just came up and worked.

It's been over a year now, and there have been no outages at all except for a couple of times where the ONT was restarted by VZ and I lost connectivity momentarily.

Optimum now also has fiber in our building, so now we have actual CHOICE here, meaning I don't expect the pricing to change any time soon.

Update

Resolved

I'm still dealing with packetloss and random outages for months and verizon deems that acceptable so no not in my book. I get packetloss and pixelation on streaming netflix, disney, youtube and disconnects and lag while gaming anytime of the day. I dropped down to 300 mb cause its not worth paying for more with this type of service. Spectrum and other alternatives are a better option now. Looking into switching and trying out spectrum and tmobile home internet.

Update august 2023

Got in touch with verizon executive office and got my problem resolved after months trying with regular support and tech visits that got no where. SO if you have issues that aren't being resolved by tech support contact verizon executive and they will open trouble tickets on your behalf and get it done. I re-upgraded to gigabit and they gave me a $15 loyalty discount and $50 gift card so I'm happy about that.

When is Fios coming to this side of the city line

Time Warner is ok, about 8-9 MB DL/ 490 ul. I'm over by LNP. My concern is ul cap on email. The big players like Yahoo, and AOL have like a 10 or 16 mb limit per email. Time Warner is around 5-8. What's the ul limit over Verizon Fios?

Truth

Bad routing and terrible gaming go hand in hand on Verizon and has been known for some time on here. It's unfortunate but that's how it currently is. If you want a decent gaming experience, seek a cable competitor if possible. If you do go this route, please let us know which ISP you go to and how it compares to Verizon.

Your results are atypical. Lag, pixelation have never been an issue here, ever. Of course, if gaming is done via WiFi, then it would be more understandable - but even at that was not an issue here, on any platform.

Re: FiOS speed, latency

Ive had fios for years and never had issues till the past 2 years. All wired connections and professional gear and problems with their own equipment as well even after replacing everyting ( Router, ONT fiber to the pole) They keep sending techs and they see the problems but say some packetloss is acceptable and it has never been like this before. I am very knowledgeable in networking and the problem is nn their side or routing issues but 100% not on my end.

Also line monitors, line quality and smoke ping from dslreports and other websites show the packetloss and very erratic pings jumping all over the place even when not using my internet. I can run a ping command going out to google, verizon and anywhere else from different computers cables network cards all show packetloss and problems. They refuse to fix it.

Re: FiOS speed, latency

That is unfortunate. Apparently, they can't seem to fix it, which is very frustrating. My issues with FiOS were never quality related, usually either billing issues at contract end or promised speed upgrades that never happened. I know one time I had to cancel the service in order to get an issue addressed; perhaps it is too late for you though, with all of the problems you've had, sounds like a permanent cancel is the only way.

Did you try posting to the Verizon direct support forum here?

Re: FiOS speed, latency

I had the opposite problem and thought i would have billing issues hearing about them from everyone else I but never did. I had a few service issues that got fixed relating to bad ont or bad pon card in the CO but this has been the worst issue ever.

Yup I tried and got referred to twitter as they don't do it here anymore apparently. Same thing happened and tech was sent saw packetloss and was told its acceptable which is BS. I had spectrum cable which is better than FIOS here which is pathetic honestly and i'm gonna switch back. The speeds are there with fios it just has packetloss, erratic high latency, dropouts and pixelation with streaming at times which is not how it used to be sadly. Even youtube starts stuttering and says spectrum is better for youtube go figure. Gonna try one more tech visit then i'm switching

I'm confused: I see posts dated June 6th; are you saying that those posts end up being referred to Twitter? What is the point of that? I can't see what is contained in those threads, because they are restricted to the person starting the thread. I thought the idea was to guarantee privacy.

When I have had any kind of issue, the way I have achieved a difficult solution is to continually ask for higher level people.

You may want to try emailing the executives.
»www.verizon.com/about/ou ··· ive-bios

The trouble with Verizon is they are too big for their britches. They are a communication company who doesn’t communicate with their customers.

They close help centers and want you to wait on hold until you give up or you get that oops you have been disconnected. A chat service manned by idiots not there to help but cause you further harm.

That FCC complaint and the executive email links will send you to Verizon executive esclations.

For the record I have had their wireless service for over 30 years and had a few blips with them.
I have had Fios with them and it has been trouble free. The only time I needed to use them was when the service was not provisioned correctly for gig service.

Complain and keep complaining until Verizon is held accountable. Best of luck dealing with them.

Seems like they don't like the bad tech support and bad reputation and want it resolved quickly so If anyone has an issue contact them and within a day you'll get a call and email that's how fast the executive office responded. They made a complaint on my behalf and opened a trouble ticket for me. I should hear back from them in a day or so to get an update and maybe a service visit.

All i know is my internet disconnected twice one day for a little bit each time then it was a lot better once it reconnected. My line quality tests and smoke ping showed erratic pings and packetloss before but now they are all stable and pretty much 0 packetloss. Even running my ping to google, verizon and my 1st hop I had about 15% packetloss before and now I let it ping 17,000 pings and lost 9 so Id say that's just fine.

I was getting this before with nothing being used on my internet and it got worse if I was streaming movies or anything.

UPDATE 2022-08-02: Price went down when I stopped the HULU package. Now paying sixty eight bucks per month. Everything has been solid. Upgraded my router to the Google Nest 6e mesh system - working flawlessly.

UPDATE 2022-04-11: Used online chat to negotiate a faster package at a lower cost. Now have the "Gigabit" package at 78 dollars a month. They tossed in a "free" Wi-Fi 6 router, and Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for a year. Speed is almost as advertised, but find that it is not as rock solid hitting the cap as I was before, but being that this is more speed than my home needs at the moment even when it does not test to the advertised speeds, so I am not going to complain.

Install was a bit of a hassle as I was not told I would need to wires run in the house via online chat support, but they got a tech out next day as I pointed out their error. Very good tech, solid guy!

The included wi-fi 6 router is not as good as my 6 year old netgear router, but can't complain about it - I am sure it is more than fine for the average household.

UPDATE 2018-11-08: My rate has been increased to 100/100 at not additional charge to me, the speeds are as advertised.

I ordered the 50/50 Package and got a special rate for 24 months. Ordering online was a bit of a hassle, but ended up getting it to work after calling in and getting a service rep to tell me how to key in my address properly (my street has been renamed 4 times in the past 20 years). At the price I am paying it is cheaper than slower Comcast cable in my area. I should note that I am in a area in that I cannot receive FIOS TV service where I am, something that is a bit unique according to Verizon CSRs.

Since my area went live we had been getting a steady stream of adverts from FIOS with different deals, but after about a year of it in my area a deal popped up that I could not pass up. I had no love for the Comcast service I currently had, but the TV service was keeping me on board. With Netflix Amazon and other services we finally decided to ditch cable and go with the cheaper, faster fios.

Install was pretty easy, they ran the fiber line a few days before the install in house, thee tech was professional and friendly. A disappointment was his lack of knowledge on the hardware, and causal attitude to the router being sub-satisfactory.

I had recently purchased a Netgear Nighthawk router that offers excellent coverage of my house of WiFi and when selecting my FIOS service I went with the top of the line "fastest" WiFi router they offered thinking that I would get similar performance and be able to sell my Nighthawk on Ebay. Upon setup I used my WiFi testing apps and found that the Router did not give me full house coverage, and the upgraded modem did not give me decent performance. Long story short after calling Verizon and trying to get a refund or swap it out I was left with no options. So now I run the Verizon router into my Nighthawk to provide WiFi and networking to the house.

Router performance aside the only other major downside is Verizon's DNS service. It will redirect you to add pages by default, and seemed slow compared to the Comcast DNS I was on. I switched over to Google's DNS and have not had problems just yet.

Overall the speed is as advertised and seems stable, occasional YouTube and Netflix slowness, but steady for the most part. I really thought that I would be head over heals, but at the end of the day it is comparable Comcast internet and overall not that much better.

Bottom line, Cheaper and Faster than Cable but about the same level of satisfaction at the end of the day.

How to use Verizon's clean DNS

See »www.verizon.com/support/ ··· s-assist to learn how to set up your router to use Verizon's clean DNS without the hijacking if you want to try that.

I noticed that when I last used Google DNS before I joined Fios as a result of moving to a new job, my performance noticeably fell because it was returning results appropriate for Mountain View, California but not really appropriate for where I was on the east coast at the time. This was because Google DNS would return IP addresses for content delivery network servers near Mountain View, California where Google is headquartered rather where I was living at the time. I guess that Google must have improved its DNS results after that test to be a bit more appropriate for your location.

Full disclosure: I work for Verizon Enterprise Solutions as a security analyst. Verizon Enterprise Solutions is a subdivision that is separate from the residential Fios service. The views that I am typing here are my own and not of my employer.

I had to push off the installation, else they would have been here within 3 days of order. Verizon of old wasn't this quick when I had DSL with them in the late 90s. Install included an extension from the MPOE to my office, which was also in the basement. All the guy had to do was run the wire over a drop ceiling and an extension cord from an interior wall to the exterior wall where their equipment is mounted. While he did need to install their router to test, later that evening I put my own router on there and brought theirs back to the local office a couple of days later ($10 rental fee gone). Note: Their router was HOT on the right side when facing it and only my cell phone had been connected to it (and essentially idle). Initial speeds after my router was connected were in the low 500s in both directions. I paid for the 500Mbps package, so I was fine with that. However, since the install I've noticed fluctuations in speeds that range from the low 300s to 400s with nothing else tapping it. Latency to the Speedof.me test servers has always been between 10 and 15ms. If that continues I may replace their CAT 5e with a pre-made CAT6 or better to see if the speed stabilizes. Verizon is making claims that 5-10Gbps is coming, so I'm hoping that the price drops for 1Gbps in the near future.

Update - Speeds have finally shown stability around what I should be getting. Not sure why there were fluctuations for the first 5-6 weeks, but things have settled down.

Additional update - Things have been smooth and speeds constant. Considering an upgrade to the speed since they offer higher now.

Erratic speeds

Check your speed elsewhere, like at Oookla. Speedofme does not give results close to any other speed test when I ran it several times.

Re: Erratic speeds

I've used Speedtest.net (Ookla), Fast.com and Google's M-Labs test. All vary, but the odd one is Fast.com which claimed I had 620Mbps down on one test. The others remain anywhere from high 200s to low 400s and usually the upload is higher than the download.

Re: Erratic speeds

If you are looking for help, I'd suggest posting which ONT your have, the machine your are using for the speed test, how long your ethernet run is, and the type of router you are using. I have the 300/300 plan and my speed is consistently over the provisioned speed, slightly. There is nothing fancy here, and I am using a Verizon G1100 router (not a rental).

Re: Erratic speeds

The ONT is an I-211M-L. The cable run is 40' total between ONT and router. Another 6' between the router and PC. My PC is a home built MSI B550 Gaming Plus mobo, AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz and 2 Samsung 980 PRO M.2 drives (only the 1st is running PCIe 4) . Ethernet chip is a Realtek 8111H (gigabit). My router is an Asus RT-AX82U with current firmware. Browers used are current Chrome and Firefox.

Finally replaced the Ethernet cable from the ONT to my router.

The Cat5e cable that wasn't crimped (just pushed in the ends) by the installer was the issue. I replaced with a CAT 6 pre-made and the odd fluctuations and loss of speed has seemingly gone away. Lesson here is that with any installer, YMMV. Check their work before they leave.

Also, there was a promo to get 1GB for the price of the 500Mbps plan a few months back and took advantage of that. Speeds didn't change when I did that, so I moved forward with the cable replacement.

Verizon FiOS is the best internet service you can get. I'm on the 1 gigabyte speed tier, which promises speeds of 940 Mbps download and 880 Mbps upload. It has been rock solid in speed and latency, averaging 4ms. The installation went very smoothly, and the installer was professional and knew what he was doing. The price is better than cable, but it still could be lower. My price is locked in for four years. Other FTTH providers in other parts of the country offer the same speed tier I have for ten dollars less.

The service should be expanded throughout New Jersey, and it shouldn't have taken as long as it did for FiOS to be expanded throughout all of Jackson, NJ. Only this year did Verizon retire all copper serving the central offices that serve Jackson Township. Verizon bypassed all homes with underground wiring in Jackson until this year. It's a superb service that should be expanded to serve the entire state. If you can get Verizon FiOS, don't hesitate, it is far superior to anything cable can offer.

Not the best in my area

I wish it was the best internet you can get its not in my area. It used to be but now its worse than anything and very unreliable. Seems after looking up its hit or miss depending on where you live. Id rather have google fiber if it was available
