I have been with 1and1 for about since December of '04. I have the Business package that offers a lot for the price. 2000MB space 50GB transfer per month 500email addy's as well as 3 domain names. I had tried GoDaddy just before this and for some strange reason they cancelled my account. In all fairness it may have been my own fault but as luck would have it, it was the same night I was looking at 1and1 and thinking it looked like a better offer. So off I went to 1and1 and have been extremely happy ever since. I have not experienced any down time and with only 1 MySQL database it suits my needs just fine.

The one bad thing is the control panel. Possibly the worst one ever but it's no big deal.

There are man other features that I have not listed. Check them out if you want.

Been using 1&1 for about 4 years now. Not sure why they get bashed so much. I've never had any problems with them. Other than the slow email support they're great. And if you call them, it's much faster. Currently manage 8 sites (4 of mine) on 5 separate packages and they've all been great.

I'm paying $9.99 instead of 3.99 because I wanted the business package for a site I was gonna set up that still hasn't happened. I'll get around to it some day.

Other wise, changing or upgrading packages is easy, they have a lot of nice tools including integrated google webmaster tools which is nice.

Basically, they give me what I need at a price I'm willing to pay. So I'm happy

"Dirt cheap, free domains, tons of space and traffic"
"Tech support is the worst in history"
"Good so long as you don't have a problem cause it may never get fixed"
Pre Sales information:
Setup experience:
Connection Reliability:
Tech Support:

Value for money:

Presales (3): Site was detailed about what you got and online sign up was easy.

Setup Experience (2): Setup for the most part went smooth. I added an existing domain and took advantage of their offer for a few free domains. No problems with FP extensions. The only problem I had was with their in2site web chatware. It didn't work at all and tech support is horrible. Ended up paying for 3 months of in2site that was never set up correctly.

Connection Reliability (5): Unlike my previous host cybersharks.net my site has never gone down or suffered server side exploits (resulting in site vandalism) and is always speedy. Can't ask for more than that.

Tech Support (1): The worst. They take forever to get back to you and leave you to rot on hold. They would also ignore the content of emails rather replying with general instructions that didn't at all apply to my problem. You call and call and every time you have to start over with the problem. They keep saying they'll have it fixed in an hour and never do. For me the plague was in2site web chatware. It never worked and they couldn't fix it. Additionally they wouldn't issue a credit even after admitting that it never worked right. After giving them 3 months to try and fix it I cancelled that part of the service. Oh well.

Services (3) Typical of a budget provider, plan dependant (see 1and1's site for details of services). Lots of options but some of them like in2site don't work well and if you have a problem it may not ever get fixed. The online admin is great, lots of control without having to deal with the actual dopes behind the scenes.

Value for Money (4): They get a 4 because the site doesn't go down and it's cheap. I just wished all the features I ordered worked like they were supposed to. But oh well, it's only $10 and I'm finding other uses for the excess space making it worth keeping.

Seattle,King,WA

"not really bad price"
"bad customer support, lock your account when you cancel but still account is active"
"they are good SCAM artist"
Pre Sales information:
Setup experience:
Connection Reliability:

Value for money:

I was their customer for almost a year and I decided to cancel my account due to some reasons:
    1. I found a cheaper web hosting
    2. 1and1 customer service sucks. They keep you on hold for at least 30 minutes
    3. They do not know how to handle customers.
    4. 1and1 have more downtime than expected.

Before transferring to my new web hosting, I cancelled my account about 3 weeks from my next billing cycle. I called their customer support and verified everything that if I cancel now, should I still be able to access my remaining weeks of my account until it expires. And the person said "yes".

But after confirming my cancellation, I wasn't able to access my account and the technical department told me that once you acknowledge your cancellation, your account is still active but I your account is locked. This means that you cannot access your files anymore.

I don't know what's their problem why they need to lock your account. You already have paid for it and there will be no harm if you cancel the account prior to renewal.

So, my advice is, before you cancel your account with 1and1, you have to make sure that you have deleted or backed up all your files prior to cancelling your account with them.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND 1AND1 TO ANYBODY.

It was a personal website so I would basically have a few unknown emails for a few family and friends.

It was down a lot. Tech support is pretty worthless since they don't ever fix anything the 2 months I had them and hold times were ridiculous. No refunds. Cancellation was even a pain. Well, they have 10 months to cancel it; I did everything. Their $1 a month email is kinda humorous. I also don't care for Microsoft servers either.

FTP was a pain to set-up.

Email ended up, when working, with about 95% spam.

10 gigs transfer and 50mb storage is ridiculous for $9.99 a month. I was over every month ending up paying double or triple.

Ping test was very high...like 100ms round trip. Google is in the teens.

Switched to Network Solutions. Domain was registered with them anyway. They have 24x7 phone support, it works, FTP is easy (share files), and email has good spam filters. It is about $19.99 a month but you get what you pay for including 100 gigs transfer a month and 50 gigs storage. Not sure but we download/upload a lot. I bought several more domains years ago and they redirect them to this site for free. Nice.

If you own domains, go with the best not the "cheapos."

I was looking to get a Domain name and an business email address and look at one Major ISP to look at their prices and see what they offered. Not having any experience with this at all, and being rushed to get this done ASAP. I looked at the services that that major ISP offered and though for what they charge, its not much that you get then i remember 1and1 ads from PC World and though let me check out what they have. All I want was email and to reserve a Domain name and these prices could not be beat. I signed up right away and have been happy so far. You get 1GB of a mailbox to be shared between 5 email address.

the only downside, is the sorry looking webmail interface, looks like college students did it just to get a passing grade.

But it does the job that you need it for.

I have 3 sites hosted at 1and1.com on their Business Hosting plan. All domains are on the same service great package for $7.95 includes items like FrontPage, email, tech support etc.

But over all 1and1 is a great company as long as you can understand their tech support. I had to call to figure out how to get the FrontPage upload to work and they were quick to walk me through everyone to make sure it was up and running.

1and1.com does a great job of what they do!

    Stay away from 1and1

Without any previous authorization they activated the autorenew, now they mess up with my acct. and for $5.99 now I have to pay $19.00.

I had been an EV1 customer for the last 5 years and never had any problem with them (I had to switch registering with ev1 because they cancell their registering services).

    Please stay away from 1and1...

I signed up for the preview package. I did not have to provide any credit card information. Nowhere did I agree to changing to the paid package. I did the mistake of purchasing domain names and providing my credit card information. The next thing I find out is notice from collection agency about unpaid balance. Since 1and1 had my credit card information from domain name purchase, they conviniently used it to upgrade me to the paid service. The tried to charge my credit card for the hosting service but the card had expired. So they sent my account to collection agency. I am writing complaints to Better Business Bureau and Pennsylvania Attorney General Mr. Tom Corbet.
Please stay away from this company.

I was introduced to 1&1 while they were running an six-month free service special. I participated in that deal and after the six months I was pretty satisfied with the job they were doing. I have only a small personal site and 1&1 is sufficient. Sometimes I feel like the speed to my site could be better, but usually it is not horrible and it is not dedicated hosting so I do not expect incredibly fast speeds, especially when the site is not big enough to warrant them. 1&1 has been a very reliable host for me. I've never noted downtime. Their e-mail support is somewhat slow, but I wouldn't hesistate to guess that their phone support is worse. I've never needed to call them.

    UPDATE 8/31/06

They've increased my available storage, transfer limits, and number of databases at no extra charge. I think I missed the e-mail and I was quite pleased when I logged in to my account and found this. The service continues to be good.
