I found them the cheapest and most reliable at the time. Bandwidth is great and high availability on the servers. Choice of Linux and Windows are great. Any updates that were made on servers aren't communicated. I setup a gallery and they did updates to the app and lost everything. Tech support told me I was out of luck and had to reload everything.
Overall, I would recommend for value and reliability. Web managment could be better and is very slow. Experienced web users/admins would be prefered users.

1&1 Internet - 1and1.com Stay away if you value your time/money!
Lured by their affordable $5.99 domain registrations I recently purchased about twenty or so domains through these people. After reviewing my account profile I've noticed they'll split up all of the various domains within different "packages" which means several unneeded layers of menus/clicking. With fairly high spirits for a Friday afternoon the 800 # to tech support is dialed and the nightmare begins.
Calling their tech "support" line is a nightmare of untold proportions. The tech immediately told me that I was talking too low to be heard. Sounds reasonable enough? I turn up the outbound on the phone and try to keep the receiver straight. She still says I can barely be heard. The rest of the following conversation took place in almost shouting volume.
After she was finally able to hear me I tried to explain in detail the problem in paragraph one. In short, I wanted all the domains to be merged to a single table format list for easy manageability. She went on to ask if I wanted to transfer a domain to 1&1. Continuing, I restated that the domains were purchased through 1&1 and just needed to be organized on their back end.
When she understood what I was asking for she stated that it was possible. I think "Great"! Here's the kicker; She wants a "five point ninety-nine maintenance fee" (her exact words, meaning $5.99, the same price to purchase another domain) to rearrange every domain that they didn't properly organize in the first place! In so many words I went on to say that the terms were unreasonable and that I wasn't about to shell out a bunch of money just to organize my account!
My second inquiry of the day was regarding another domain I had purchased three days ago, had my credit card charged for and never showed up under my control panel. I had to spell out the domain (avemariarealestate.net) before she repeated it back to me properly. Variations of her misspellings included, but weren't limited to (avmararealstate.net),(avemarareelstate.net) and (avemarraestate.net).
After about two minutes of awkward silence the tech tells me that she doesn't know why avemariarealestate.net isn't showing up under my account. She submits a support ticket with her next level boss and says she'll call back "soon". With the three day weekend approaching it leaves one feeling quite doubtful that you're a priority when dealing with such vague terms as "soon".
At this point my patience is at an end. Mustering all the manners possible (remembering that English is not her native tongue) the conversation comes to a close. "Thank you for calling 1&1, this was "Row-see" (she proceeded to spell it out R-O-S-E) helping. She says they'll call back when the problem is resolved, but nobody here is holding their breath. This is personally the worst "support" I've ever received from any company. After today's ordeal it is quite obvious that 1&1 is not a customer-centric organization.
After reading the preceding review I hope that you take the time to seek out other providers prior to being lured by this entities "bargain" prices. While I consider myself a fairly thrifty shopper, value is also something that should not be ignored. If paying six bucks a year buys you this kind of "service" then my personal recommendation would be to take your money elsewhere.
In Summary:
* Tech/billing "support" from (insert some place cheaper than the USA in here for outsourcing) that can barely speak English * Poor quality phone line/equipment that requires your customers to shout * Outrageous "maintenance" fees for simple administrative functionality that should be included free of charge * Passing the buck on a simple issue, failing to solve the problem while the customer is on the line * Indifferent/tired/burnt out tech that ends up being next to useless in solving a client's problem
Closing Thoughts:
Avoid 1&1 like the plague!

"Good reliability, everything seems to work well."

I have the 1&1 Professional Preview package that was offered a while back for free. I believe that I have it for three years from when I signed up, it was a promotion when they were just getting started. I don't need anything fancy, I just use it to host my business site and a school site and forward a couple e-mail addresses.
The control panel is functional, but it does take a learning curve and it is a little quirky. Things just don't seem to be in the right places for configuration and it can be pretty hard to use.
Recently I've added a couple $5.99 domains. You can't beat the price and all is well. Another plus is that their home base is about 15-20 minutes at the most from me, so they're a local company for me.
I suppose that I'll move to my ISP hosting service once my preview is up since I don't really need many features besides e-mail forwarding and a domain, but right now 1&1 works great.
I haven't noticed any downtime, although I'm not a heavy user, but I assume reliability is pretty good. 1&1 is pretty good.

I have the 1and1 Developer Package. It's fast, easy to use, and serves its purpose. The control panel is deadly slow, and tech support is horrible to deal with when they screw up, but aside from that, they have been good.
Recommended.

"Great value, Reliable network"

"For static content, you can't go wrong"

I originally started out with one of their free packages and was quite impressed with the features they offered and decided to move a couple of my sites over to them.
I decided on the Developer Package (»order.1and1.com/xml/order/HostingDev) and have been somewhat pleased with their tech support and overall server reliability. For $19.99/month they offer the following: 4GB Disk space 100GB of monthly transfer 25 FTP accounts 1,000 1GB POP3 mail accounts 5 free domains 3 100MB MySQL databases Perl, Python and PHP3-5 support SSH shell access
Sounds pretty good doesn't it? If you've got a need to host large amounts of static content and need a fair amount of bandwidth, this is definitely the package for you.
But if you're looking to host dynamic content, think again.
1&1 isn't very generous with server memory. PHP is limited to 8MB and runs as a CGI, further limiting available memory. With a site written entirely in PHP, you'll soon find that even a very small user load can quickly expend what little memory you're allocated.
Other than the few issues mentioned above, their service is stellar and is a great value.

I've been with 1&1 for a little bit over a month and have had over twenty hours of downtime. When the server is up, everything is great. The IMAP and POP server can be a bit slow at times. They also have their own "home grown" control panel that can be a bit slow at times, but is pretty user friendly was you get used to it.

I first encountered 1&1 when I read about their free three year promotion in the Hot Deals forum here. I signed up for the free deal and was pleased with everything except for their technical support. With the free promotion, support is via email only and the level of support is not good.
I decided I needed a second website so I purchased the Business Package from 1&1 and I have been very pleased with what I have received from them with this package. Tech support is via phone or email 24/7 and I have been very pleased with the level of support they have provided. I had to set-up a MySQL database and didn't have a clue how to do it but they gave me a helping hand whenever I needed it.
I pay $9.99 a month for the Business Package and had to pay the first three months in advance but I am not on a contract. They were offering software they said was worth $550 but I really couldn't see anything that made me want to pay the shipping costs for the free software.
The Business Package includes:
3 domain names 1 GB of web space 15 GB/month of bandwidth 150 POP3 email accounts 5 FTP accounts Perl, PHP3 and PHP4 1 MySQL database (100 MB)
and lots of other features for creating your own website.
Update: My love affair with 1&1 is over. I have moved my website to a new hosting provider as 1&1 have been plagued with problems for the last six weeks.
During the last six weeks, my website would often load very slowly or not at all.
I placed numerous calls to 1&1 complaining about these problems and the response was always the same: We are aware there is a problem and we are working hard to find the problem as well as a solution but at this time we cannot tell you when the problem will be solved.
Finally, after hearing this again about 10 days ago when I called in to complain that I could not pull my site up, I decided to find a new hosting provider.
At this point in time, I can no longer recommend 1&1. I am disappointed in the way things have deteriorated as they offered awesome value. But what good is value when you can't even access your site?
