I first encountered 1&1 when I read about their free three year promotion in the Hot Deals forum here. I signed up for the free deal and was pleased with everything except for their technical support. With the free promotion, support is via email only and the level of support is not good.

I decided I needed a second website so I purchased the Business Package from 1&1 and I have been very pleased with what I have received from them with this package. Tech support is via phone or email 24/7 and I have been very pleased with the level of support they have provided. I had to set-up a MySQL database and didn't have a clue how to do it but they gave me a helping hand whenever I needed it.

I pay $9.99 a month for the Business Package and had to pay the first three months in advance but I am not on a contract. They were offering software they said was worth $550 but I really couldn't see anything that made me want to pay the shipping costs for the free software.

The Business Package includes:

3 domain names
1 GB of web space
15 GB/month of bandwidth
150 POP3 email accounts
5 FTP accounts
Perl, PHP3 and PHP4
1 MySQL database (100 MB)

and lots of other features for creating your own website.

Update: My love affair with 1&1 is over. I have moved my website to a new hosting provider as 1&1 have been plagued with problems for the last six weeks.

During the last six weeks, my website would often load very slowly or not at all.

I placed numerous calls to 1&1 complaining about these problems and the response was always the same: We are aware there is a problem and we are working hard to find the problem as well as a solution but at this time we cannot tell you when the problem will be solved.

Finally, after hearing this again about 10 days ago when I called in to complain that I could not pull my site up, I decided to find a new hosting provider.

At this point in time, I can no longer recommend 1&1. I am disappointed in the way things have deteriorated as they offered awesome value. But what good is value when you can't even access your site?

1 AND 1 OWNS!

I recently moved my domain, 87gt.com, over to 1&1 after dealing with a absolutely retarded flat out lying rep from godaddy.com. The rep at go-daddy told me that path forwarding was technologically impossible and that my domain 87gt.com didnt forward the remainder of the URL to the new subdomain. It worked for a year...didnt work for the weekend, I switched to 1&1 and havent looked back!

Btw, I have free webhosting for 3 years, 5GB of transfer a month (WOW!), 500MB storage, email, and who knows what else is available for free. My domain is 5.88 a year. So ya, my monthly bill from them is $0.49.

I hope you read this Terry Murray, path forwarding is technologically possible!!!!

Re: 1 AND 1 OWNS!

I forgot to mention the price of domains. At $5.88 per year per domain, I purchased three of them. Definitely a good deal.

Re: 1 AND 1 OWNS!

Just received 1and1's newsletter and the price of their domains has increased to $5.99 per year. Still a good deal though. And existing customers who purchased their domains at the old price are locked into that old price. Pretty decent of them I would say.

You sure? I have a free account too, and I have no problems with PHP. I haven't tried mySQL though.

PHP and MySQL are on all free accounts. You must have done something wrong.

1&1 not for real

I have been using 1&1 as a free Professional Package Preview customer for 6 months and was pleased with speed and had a small (but important to me) real estate sale website there.

I was about to migrate my main website over and upgrade to a business package last weekend when the 1&1 server went down on Friday. For SIX days, the website was reporting "404". Repeated phone calls responded "the server had hardware issues and should be running again within 2 hours." This was on Monday, Tuesday, and most of Wednesday. (No answer for us freebie-scum on the only published phone number over the weekend.)

They got the server running today (late Wednesday) but then admitted that "2%" of the websites on the server could not be recovered. Guess who was included in the 2%!

Then further problems. Permissions were not enabled so I could not restore my website from my end. They said that they had to run a fix procedure that would take about 2 hours. After two hours, they reported that the fix procedure had to be run twice; try back in two more hours.

Finally, I got everything restored and running except for the parts that used the "Website Creator" product that locks "forever" your domain name and your website into their infrastructure. I was never able to get that working and have given up.

My (hopefully apparent) bitterness is due to the fact that this is also the prime week for tourists and the week that we have been running newspaper ads mentioning the website.

Vent: How can the "world’s biggest web host" not have a plan in place for a server going down? Why did it take almost a full week to recover? Why was there nothing but a "404" message visible during the outage? Why, after even a week, were they unable to recover 2% of the 1,700 websites hosted on the server. Why did the company who claims: "Whether it’s a collection of family photos or a business that is your livelihood, 1&1 knows how vital it is that your website is always available." complain that I was a non-person (signed up for their free promotional offer) when I asked for technical support to get my website restored.
