Since the changes in February 2012 (new CRTC rules went into force), DSL became an unacceptable option particularly because I could not get anything above 6M service. When I considered switching to cable I considered 2 companies based on DSLReports.com reviews. The difference came down to installation costs since for my needs everything else matched up.

So I ordered my 30/2 service at the beginning of April and it took about 3 weeks for the install (probably because I asked for PM install). Couple of minor errors happened with respect to my original order and shipping (the later was actually Purolator's fault) and both were resolved in friendly and helpful way.

On the installation day the tech showed up, setup the line and tested it, the modem wouldn't sync right away but it eventually did (which I've read is common for new installs). That same evening at about 8:30pm I got a call from Ebox doing a follow-up.

So I'm writing this review roughly a month after my installation and so far I have nothing to complain about. I've also cancelled my telephone line and have ported my number to Freephoneline.ca

All in all, I'm happy, moving to Ebox and cancelling my phone line has resulted in me paying pretty much what I was paying before (within $5 difference) but for about 6 times the download speed.

UPDATE Sept 8, 2012: Recently ordered cable for my father's place in the Montreal area. Since my father's place didn't have cable in the past, the installation might have to go through Videotron's engineering (at the end it wasn't much engineering, they just pulled a cable from a pole 30 feet away to the house so I don't think they can charge $200 for that). Not going to go through all the details but Installation was ordered on August 6th with the understanding that it could take a couple of weeks because of possible engineering. Cable installation was done on August 29th (with no real notice and a fluke chance that someone was home when the tech arrived) and the modem arrived on September 5th.

I was going to write a long story of my recent experience, but I thought I would rather keep it short and state the bottom line. The entire second installation was a disappointing experience in customer relations and not what I had expected from E box. It wasn't the delay that bothered me but rather how E box handled our disagreement about service activation that was equivalent to 50% of the monthly service fee (roughly $20) which apparently is equal to 6 months profit to them. I finally gave up. I just hope that the service stays solid and stable and that I don't have to deal with customer service. Videotron and the client can't always be the escape goats.

à long terme!

Value for money:

Conclusion:

I was referred to Electronic Box by a friend and I'm glad he did. Prior to switching I had an 8Mbps Videotron connection with their business division but was tired of paying $80+/month just so I wouldn't go over a monthly transfer limit.

Now I have a 30Mbps connection with 500GB/month transfer for $20 less! The connection is just as reliable and the service is impeccable! The customer service agent was very helpful and answered all of my questions. I've called in twice and have never been on hold longer than 3 minutes.

The only "negative" if I can say that is their dependance on Videotron techs for the installation. It will take a few days for them to confirm the install date, but it was well worth the effort!

High Speed (8 Mbps) cable Internet connexion at 32$/month, 75 Gig
bandwidth limit, No contract, No phone line
Installation took place about 10 days after order and worked within the hour.

My alternatives at Sorel-Tracy (QC) were Bell and Videotron. EBox uses
the Videotron cable network, yet I don't have to deal with Videotron
directly.

Electronic Box service is more personalised, price is lower
than what Videotron (or even Bell) offers, no contract, and initial
fees are (I believe) the same everywhere : 75$ Motorola cable modem,
50$ line installation. I had to go get the modem myself, but their
office is easily accessible if you're in Montreal, from Longueuil
subway station.

When I called them, I never waited for very long and got one of their
employees directly, not some random faraway operator.

It's too soon to say much more. Past problems I've had with ISPs
happened around the 1st bill, which should come soon for me.

At what fee? They didn't offer it to me for free, I chose to get it myself, as did another client at the same time as me. He was from Montreal tho.

I registered the cable 30Mbits / 2Mbits offer the 6th of july.
I received a confirmation of a meeting with videotron technician a week later.
I couldn't be there for the meeting so it went a 2 weeks later.

That is not so bad considering the price I will pay.

But here is what I don't like.
First day I have my cable internet working I had 30Mbits / 2Mbits score in speedtest, but only 2 days later it dropped to 20Mbits / 0.3Mbits. The upload speed is even worse then my last ISP (Bell DSL). I wrote 2 emails and still waiting for the answer it's been like a week for the first email and about 1 day for the second email. I hope they fix it quick. Is there any way I can get money back from bad speed like that. I feel rip off.

I will update on this review.

Update August 2nd:

A tech from ElectronicBox contacted me Tuesday night to check my problem, but I wasn't there so I called yesterday and I made some test with the tech there. I did the test of connecting the cable directly to my computer like I did by myself, and the result were the same. But the tech say close your anti-virus. Witch I did and bang I had like 33Mb/2.1Mb. I was a little confuse by the result. So apparently AV program drain all my speed. I was pleased by the result and the tech said that I could continue testing and if I had other problems to call them back.

After I hung up I hooked up the modem back to my router and did a speed test again. The result 17Mb/0.3Mb. I couldn't understand what was the problem it was a brand new N router E3200. I did my search and I found that QoS witch I used for my VOIP SIP made a lot of problems for everyone. I decided to remove QoS and BANG 32Mb/2.1Mb.
It's a little strange since it worked with my last ISP (Bell DSL) but anyway now I must find a way to have QoS for my VOIP but that is not ElectronicBox problem :P

So I must apologize to Electronic Box and say they have a great service.
Buy with confidence.

P.S. And the tech told me they did answer my email but got an undelivered message error.
That I don't understand but they should check why because my email is a standard yahoo.com account and everyone can send me emails even the spammers

Re: Slow speed

I use a Cisco E3200 and it's working flawlessly. It was with my older ISP.

I have Windows computer running Windows 7 X64bit.

I use the antivirus that comes with Windows7.

Im pretty sure the problem is not on my side since I had 30Mbits/2Mbits the first day and my older ISP worked fine. It was just overprice for what it offered.

I just did a speed test and it's even worse I get 3.5Mbit/0.2Mbit.

Im a little pissed right now

Re: Slow speed

Can you run your speedtest on our server first.

speedtest.electronicbox.net and post the result here.

When you do your test can you do it with your pc directly into the modem.

Will get that fixed for you.

slow speed

Could you please do the test without your router connected to the modem and post your results here,
The reason we ask you to do this is because we want to isolate the modem and make sure the reading we get is from the modem and nothing else. Once you have done the test post the results here once again it must be done without router to isolate the modem. If a router is present then the test is not valide and electronic box cannot troubleshoot the issue with there supplier.

Re: slow speed

If you activate QoS, put "Upstream Bandwidth": Manual 3 or 4 Mbps in your router.

Allways put more than you maximum upload. Make some SpeedTest until you get the best value for your router.

I was anxious to leave Bell, whose ADSL service is expensive and ridiculously restrictive during peak hours. I'd considered going back to AEI for ADSL but decided to look up who was offering cable service these days and found you guys.

I'm currently working with R-SpeedCable Extreme 15 with a 250 GB limit, at 44.95$ a month. So far I couldn't be happier.

As I've stated above, the customer service has been great. The Videotron guys were friendly too, and patient--it took half an hour to find the cable outlet in my apartment because of all the boxes from my roommate's recent move, and they took it all in stride. I was only a bit peeved when they said they couldn't drill a hole in my living room ceiling to get the cable to the second-floor office; they left me enough cable length to do it myself, though, but it set me back an afternoon to go out and rent the right size drill bit and finish the job.

The modem is a Cable Thomson DCM475 STAC.55.01. It seems to be working fine, though I've noticed it tends to heat up quite a bit. I'm not used to cable so I'm not sure whether this is normal, but since it hasn't turned to liquid yet I've tended to disregard this.

Besides the minor Videotron incident, the service on Electronic Box's end has been irreproachable. Your customer service is very efficient and to the point. I should mention: at first I hadn't recorded your company's number on my phone, so when one of your guys first called, I thought I was being solicited. I remember being quite curt with the man right off the bat--I hate sales calls. Then he identified himself (sorry to forget the name here) and I was embarrassed I might have come across as being somewhat rude. He was very friendly, though, and knowing what a busy period it was for him and how stressful these kind of work days can be, I was impressed with his composure and decorum. Also, I've worked in customer service for almost ten years and so I'm used to the cliches and formulas--I always appreciate a sales rep whose attitude is sincere, and not excessively flattering in hopes to sell me something I don't want, or from fear that a supervisor is listening on the other end.
