    My Other Reviews·AT&T Yahoo
    ·RoadRunner Cable
We've had Armstrong for over 5 years and they gave us excellent, reliable service -- even out in the schticks (amish country in PA)! I did not give the highest rating for customer service, simply because I've only had to deal with them once, and the support rep did not seem knowledgeable. I fixed the issue in 5minutes, when it took the rep 30 minutes of not knowing what to do over the phone. But then, the support rep didn't matter as much because when your service works as expected -- you rarely need to talk to tech support!

The technician who installed our service even gave us extra-long cable in case we decided to move the tv or computers around. We had 2 tvs connected, 1 phone, and 2 computers. He even told us how easy it was to convert our 2-prong outlets to 3-prong, and basically kept a friendly conversation going while working. He wore those shoe covers every time he came into the home, so we didn't have any dirt tracked onto the carpet.

Once they began offering phone service, we had our cable & internet bundled with the phone. Everything worked great! You can access your entire account online too. For a small/local company, their service excelled compared to the big-name ones out there. I only wish they had service in the area I just moved to (Ohio), because now we have Time Warner, and they suck!

I looked at roadrunner before I decided to go with Zoom. I have a excellent package its 10mbps down and 1.5mbps up.. I love the service and plan on keeping it as long as I live in Medina. I called for new service on a Monday and on Thursday they were there installing it. I haven't had any bad experiences with the service and have had it for almost 2 years.

I have the "Zoom Pro" plan, 1200KB/sec down and 180KB/sec up for $60 isn't bad really. No contracts, month to month billing.

They don't play games, cap your service or limit p2p services. I use Miro, Joost, iTunes, Bit Torrent and I'm always downloading new Linux DVD's.... heavy usage for over eight years now with zero problems.

I've only lost service once in that time (eight years) and it was only for a couple hours.

The only problem I've had involved a decrease in bandwidth that turned out to be a faulty router. Customer service set up the appointment, the tech pin pointed the problem and replaced the router (included in monthly service) for free.

I have had Alltel DSL in this region and when I moved six years ago I decided to switch to Armstrong. Alltel was unreliable and their repair service was uncoordinated and uncommunicative.

I ordered Armstrong's cable Internet service, Zoom, and the process was smooth. I do not use Armstrong for television service so I am assessed a fee of $10 a month on top of the normal Internet service charges.

Installation was performed on-time and quickly. I have a network equipment rack and requested that the installer just install to that point, test it and I would handle things from there. He had no problem with that.

Back when I originally subscribed my service was 3Mb down and 256kb up. (Their highest residential at the time.) Over the following 18 months Armstrong kept increasing their service speeds to a final 5Mb/512kb. This was probably due to competition in another market. There was nobody competing with them in this market with anything remotely close to that speed.

I have done random speed tests over the last six years and they have also shown results very close to the advertised speed. I am a heavy user and have not encountered any issues, throttling or bandwidth shaping as many people in other markets have with their providers.

In six years I have only had two short outages and they were a result of network equipment failures. The problem was resolved quickly. Dealing with tech support was a bit frustrating though because they are using a flowchart for diagnosing problems and can't seem to independently see beyond the next block. I've had to literally stop them and explain to them where in their network the problem was occurring and, upon their testing of that point, they discovered I was correct. Had I let them continue it would have wasted a great deal of my time with them trying to assign a problem to within my own home.

The only real problem I had with them occurred approximately six months ago. They have an automated call system that is apparently to be used for customer notifications. Due to changes in the DNS assignments for static IP customers their system was to make calls about the changes. I was not one of those customers but their system kept calling me anyhow. It was calling me 10-15 times a day and hanging up when I answered for five days. (Identified as them only from their caller ID. Thank goodness they didn't block that.) I repeatedly called their support number and corporate numbers to get it to stop and nobody had any idea why their system was calling me. Finally they black-listed my home number in their system and everything came to a stop.

I consider them a good value and very reliable service. I recently had thoughts of switching to Windstream (formerly Alltel) under a promotion they were running and it turned into a fiasco. (See my review of them and that situation) I am happy I didn't switch to them.

Had the zoom 500 setup back about 6 months or so ago. Had a problem with the internal wiring causing intermittent dropouts, tech support not much help so troubleshot it myself with info about the diagnostics in the surfboard 4200 found here. Haven't had any trouble since. Newsgroup server is not the best. If you need that a third party is necessary.

Got the VOIP service through them with a new Arris Touchstone 402G "modem". Works fine, no issues so far.

"Speed needs to be managed"
"Better deal in certain areas"

I got the pro package. 8mb/s download, 1.5mb/s upload. I have noticed that maximum speed and quality of service varies wildly from one neighborhood to the next. Where a family member lives slow speed and disconnects are almost normal, but my connection is mostly constant and very fast (when managed). A simple connection to a server to download works perfectly with speeds reaching up to 4mb/s on a good server with few connections. Mass downloading needs to be managed with a a speed regulator; eg. Detect ping and alter max upload speed based on the average ping times. Eitherwise basic internet surfing crawls or comes to a stop in some cases. The main reason I got it was for the 1.5mb/s upload which works very well and can typically achieve around 1.3mb/s (multiple connections; about 600-800kb/s for a single server connection). It works well for uploading websites and photos and playing games as ping times are typically 50-120ms. A bit expensive compared to other countries and companies outside this area, but I expect prices to fall as technology advances. Overall a great service for businesses and the internet savvy user. If you just want to surf the net/check email then get the lighter packages. Today it's the fastest internet in town.

They came in and took over cebridge which sucked so bad it was insane they had around 60% up time 300-900+ ping in online games and the connection speed i was paying for was 1000/256. Armstrong comes in and puts in all new cable and repeaters and servers has around 95% up time 10-70 ping in online games and there 5000/512 service is very fast.

I live out in eastern Pennsylvania (Chester county to be exact), Armstrong is located out in western Pennsylvania. I don't know how they got cable rights this far out into Pennsylvania, but if it wasn't for them, we would have no broadband -- but at this point, I wouldn't be too sad if that happened.

I first got Armstrong early 2005, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The pings were great, the download speeds were crazy fast. Then it started going down hill...

By the start of 2006, I saw pings to various places raise dramatically. Download speeds also took a hit. I thought this was a temporary issue. It is not...

Pings to Dallas rose from 50 to 100. By the end of 2006, this ping was up to 140. Now, nearing June of '07, ping to Dallas is 170. This is dial up speed, and unacceptable for $45 a month when I could get that ping for 1/5th of that.

    But, here is the kicker:

Since laws are in place to prevent clutter, only one cable company can be in here at a time, so since Armstrong claimed Chester first, they own us. Comcast can't touch us, and DSL providers don't want to touch us since we are considered "low income," and putting up lines would be a waste of money. They have a monopoly.

They use this to their advantage. I've tried Armstrong in other places like Lebanon and Lancaster, and it has been absolutely fantastic. Pings were 50 to Dallas and downloads were blazing. Yet, in Lancaster and Lebanon, Armstrong has competition from DSL providers. However, in Chester, on all the computers at different houses that have Armstrong, they have had 170 ping and above. Absolutely ridiculous.

I filed a complaint to the BBB, but I doubt it'll help the cause. It'll probably get me 1 bill paid off or something.

So, in short, if you need good latency/ping, move to Lancaster. They have better service and DSL there.
