Free modem, great reliability multiple IPs to own equipment
Speed not as it should, due to distance Attenuation and S/N ratio

Telecom Italia is the former monopolist in Italy. They provide decent service and they have the largest geographical coverage. Some time they still act if they were the only ones. The service generally works very well but if you are down it might take them forever to bring you back up. Their service call center understands on basic user configs and if you go away from their beaten path is very easy for them to get lost.

Very good point for them is their speed to install and change configs (especially for upgrades). The price is good (I indicated the total monthly cost for an ISDN 2 channel line plus a VoIP number and a DSL connection, including free nationwide calls). I have therefore 3 telephone lines (2 ISDN Channels and a VoIP) and DSL. About speed, the contract is for a 7Mbit/384kbit the SLA is for 2 Mbit/200kbit and the actual rates are 4800/384 so I would say rather good. You are issued a modem/router which does voice and WiFI, they own it and they replace it for free if it breaks (it doesn't). You can connect another router after that or to rplace it if you are not satisfied with performance.

My only choice.
Sometimes they provide a bad service (unstable connection, very low speed)
They act like monopolist, they should open their eyes and do something!

I have a contract with Telecom Italia for a 7000/384 kbit/s ADSL. I have chosen Telecom Italia because I had no other choices: in my little town it's the only telephone and internet provider. It could seem that 7 Mbit download rate is quite slow in a G8 member country like Italy: well, the world of telecommunication in Italy is a mess. I live quite near the exchange and my router negotiate the speed to 8192 Kbps (the contract-default negotiate speed). In order to allow this speed, Telecom Italia "adjust" SNR margin of the line in order to obtain a lower value (and a greater speed). As result the connection (in very rare moments) may be unstable.

7 Mbit is only a dream: the maximum speed I reached (connected with my university server, located at 15 km to my house) is 6.4 Mbit/s, but normal values are 5-5.5 Mbit/s.

Upload speed is ridicolous: 384 kbps are a very bad value in europe of 2010. (although sometimes upload speed reaches 400 kbit/s).

Besides, the exchange of my town is FULL, which means that all the adsl connection must share a "limited" (and very small) internet band.

My contract is "Alice Tutto Incluso", which costs approximately 88 EUR/2 months (44 EUR/month, 58 USD/month). With this contract I can call all the national telephones (not the mobile ones) without limits, and I can use 24/7 the dsl service I have described before. Included in the contract there WAS a Wi-Fi router (a Pirelli Broadband router, a very bad company); well, one day it decided not to work properly and some days after it broke definitely; so I have to bought another dsl router (I bought a d-link dsl2640b).

Ultimately, Telecom Italia has a monopoly in a great part of Italy; because of this, they sometimes provide a very bad services!

You always have to call them several times before you really get what you paid for: they activated the wrong commercial package on my line twice already, and the line setup was awful until I started asking for a better treatment.

I live in barracks and this is the only internet we can get, we are supposed to be getting a good deal through the navy exchange, but at $58 a month for a "2mb" internet connection that I have never gotten better than 800kbps and constantly drops packets making my voip drop calls I can honestly say i think we are getting the short end of the stick....

The italian broadband situation is the same: we must pay high cost for low speed and quality DSL, without MCR (or 25Kbs of MCR on a ADSL of 4836 down/320up), without any technical support.
