Switched from AT&T DSL. From signup to activation a very good experience. Friendly people at the local office in our small town & regional support. The few issues I've had have been met with competent & pleasant service.

Addendum 4/13/10 - They seemed to have fixed the evening slowdown issue I was experiencing.

not as happy with them as my isp

Suddenlink is ok in some features but they do not offer stable routing. Seems as if every three months my rounting to dallas is directed from tyler tx to chicago then to denver just to reach dallas from lufkin ... which is just around 200 miles ie. 20 ms ping is now at 60 ms - 80 ms ping. I have had to call in many times for service going down for long periods of time and fighting with billing to get my bill adjusted. I would transfer isp in a heart beat if Suddenlink does not get on the ball and fix these issues

I originally had the 8mbps package from Suddenlink, they recently bumped this up to 10mbps. The connection was no where near 10mbps. I recently upgraded to the 36mbps package and am thoroughly pleased. Install/setup was easy, all I had to do was swap out the old modem with the new one I picked up from the office.

Unlike others I never have really suffered any outages and have never had any problems with Suddenlink.

The price for the 36 is $75 standalone, $65 with cable. My total Suddenlink bill comes to $101.16 but that is with Digital Cable/HD DVR/HD Plus/HBO + the internet connection. I also should note that is a discounted rate, the rate should be around $125/month but my apartment complex pays for internet and extended basic.

Ever since they upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 my modem has had trouble from time to time. The modem will randomly loose the connection and then get stuck in "Upstream Ranging" anywhere from 5 minutes to 12 hours. I have replaced the modem and had multiple calls to SL and they even sent someone out to look. Personally I think it is something to do with a problem in the return path between my modem and the fiber node (bad line amp or tap?).

Other than that the service is great. I was recently upgraded from 8mb/512kb to 10mb/1mb. The 1mb upstream is great for doing Mozy Backups, ect.

I just ran a speed test; below is the result.

Download Speed: 8.22 mb/s

MP3 file (5 MB) 5 sec
Video Clip (35 MB) 35 sec
Movie (800 MB) 13 min

Upload Speed: .53 mb/s

Email Attachment: (1 MB) 16 sec
Photo Gallery (8 MB) 2 min
Video Clip (35 MB) 9 min

I must add that I do not think these results are quite accurate. My personal benching of these speeds consistently show a dramatic difference. My results are ALWAYS much faster than any online speed test I have used to date.

My download bench for a 5MB MP3 file nearly always averages at - 1.5 sec. Similar faster comparative results are the norm for the remaining test fields. The most significant being in the upload tests. (I base this on the above posted results. However; I experience the same vast differences with all of the online tests I have done, many to a far wider degree.)

Suddenlink seems to be fine for me and has been a solid performer for the last 7 years. Yeah, I was with Cox Cable when Suddenlink took over. My only complaint is regarding their television service and lack of any competent persons working in customer service/support for television.

The support on the internet side is different. The techs know EXACTLY what is happening at any given moment. The few times I have placed a call to report an outage, (always has been storm related) the problem was solved either prior to getting to a tech or whilst speaking to one. I don't even call anymore. If a storm knocks it out, I wait about 15 min. and reboot everything; more often than not this will get me back online.

No, I do not work for any cable or internet provider. I am a 30 year Veteran of the United States Marine Corps (6 yrs) and the United States Navy (24 yrs). I have had various ISP's both cable and DSL. It has never proved to be anything other than this: DSL, regardless of provider; was and remains a waste of time and money. Cable, regardless of the provider; has always trumped the performance of DSL.

Just my thoughts, experiences and opinions. Happy new year to everyone. Keep up the great work here, maybe those that are having problems with Suddenlink or any provider in their area; will get these issues resolved. (Have you posted to RipOffReport.com ?)

I am on the 8meg/512kbps package. About 80 percent of the time I average about 1.5 megs down. I have been having speed issues with this company for about a year now. I can't even count how many times I have had field techs out to my house to check the problem. All they can do is hook up the meter to my cable line and tell me I have a good signal. The problem is that they are oversold in this area and I can't seem to get any resolution to the problem. Why offer these 8 meg and 10 meg packages if you cant provide it? It won't be long until I cancel my service with Suddenlink and go somewhere else if they cant fix the problem.

It has been 3 months since the upgrade and my speeds haven't missed a beat. Service has been very consistent since the upgrade.

Same Issue Here

I have the exact same issue. I have had guys at my house replacing equipment, swapping out filters, etc. NEVER get the 8MB like promised. I typically get 3.5 - 4. I dont understand how you can provide me 1/2 of what I should be getting, but yet I still have to pay 100%.

Speeds have improved

Shortly after posting my complaint I was contacted by Pete Abel in the forum then I was contacted by a plant manager here in my area the very next business day. He informed me that they were going to do some upgrades within the next few weeks to come. As of today Suddenlink completed the upgrades in this area and I have noticed a very big improvement. It has only been one night since the upgrade but so far I am impressed.

Edit 11/30/09- Had some more problems with my connection but SL was able to fix it. Still slowdowns during peak times, although I was assured they have enough capacity to handle it. They lowered the price on the 20meg to $70, but you still have to purchase the modem. I was told the upload was 2mbit, not 1, which is what I'm mainly concerned about.

Once again Pete was able to get this fixed.

Edit 8/24/09. Pete was able to help me getting my correct cost. Still getting great speeds, and if this wasn't such a good deal, I'd upgrade to faster speeds.

Picked up SL about 1 week ago today after having at&t with their 6/768 package. I contemplated keeping at&t because of the higher upload. Anyways, I'm on the 8/512 package, and I signed up back in July but did not activate my service until one week ago. It did not work for the first two days, probably a MAC/modem issue, but once it did, it's blazin.

We have SL at my non-college home and it is very, very poor so I wasn't sure what to expect. Maybe it has to do with the fact that SL has DS 3.0 in my area, but I always get ~950KB/sec and sometimes burst over 1MB/sec.

It was a self install, so I can't really knock them there. The part that I'm having problems with currently is I was promised the 8/512 plan for $20/mo for one year, a promotion they had going at the time. Well, they applied it as $20/off for one year, which makes it about $41 after taxes, still cheaper than at&t.

Customer service is usually nice, and local. I have to fake my area code to get the local call center, but other than that it's fine. I was told my account was being sent up to a supervisor to be "evaluated" since the credit was applied wrong.

Other than the above issues, the connection itself works great. SL's routing isn't the best in west TX so the uploads aren't the greatest. We also have 6meg DSl, 18meg U-verse, and Wimax. U-verse is way too expensive and I live in a not-so-good part of town so they of course did not lay it to my complex. Hopefully once these billing issues get worked out it'll be good. Also, I had to buy a modem for $37 after tax, and it was $39 shipped on Newegg so not a bad deal.

I've used Cable internet for 8 years now. When I signed up and bought my modem, I was on in less than 30 minutes, and I doubt my cable modem has been disconnected for more than 8 or 9 hours in that 8 years. I have lived both in a rural areas and now in a heavy urban area. Both areas have and had great service. Most of these people that are complaining probably have six or seven hundred adware, spyware, and viruses on their system. The numbers don't lie. More people call professionals to have adware and spyware taken off than for any other reason, including viruses or hardware problems. Ask any PC repair shop.

Most problems are end user, not provider issues

so true, BHO's and resident leeches are to blame and not the cable company. When you show up to there house and they turn on the computer to show you the problem all you see on their browser is about 2 inches of actual website and the rest is "toolbars" and nonsense. not to mention the taskbar is as wide as the monitor and full of auto-loading programs that are supposed to speed up your internet, lol. they think we are playing a trick on them sometimes when we hookup our laptops and show them our speedtests versus theirs. oh well, its neverending and I really wish people would not flame their ISP because their junk don't work to begin with. I also wish people would all get wiregaurd or service assurance instead of going to wal-mart and buying junk splitters and junk coax cables, that stuff is easily 50% of all tech workorders in the cable business.

Every market is different

That's a pretty big leap, ml! So it's only the people that have to carry their PCs into a shop are that have problems with their service. That's refreshing!

While I'm happy for you that your experiences with Suddenlink have been good, the majority of the rest of ours haven't been.
