I began using broadband, Cable Modem Service, as soon as it became available in this area (Eastern NC) about seven years ago. First I was RR, then Greenville Cable, then Cox, and now, the worst ever; Suddenlink.net.
We were promised that their "simple, easy" switchover with their Trueswitch protocol would take place on October 24, 2006. It became a reality on November 11, 2006. And there was glitch after glitch after glitch when this finally did happen. They have made reaching their tech support by email virtually impossible. If you can get through by phone the techies are either all hungover or just plain ignorant. There were three of the Cox tech support folks left and they were good, for about two weeks. I spoke with one, after I finally got through on the fourth day of trying, and found that he was more frustrated then I because of lack of info to them from the company. He quit the next day after being with Cox since their first day.
Enough of this whining: My download speed has dropped from a normal 3225 down to about a consistant 140-165. I've called and emailed at least seven times with no response to the emails and the one time that I got a live human on the phone, it was a total waste of time. The tech person spent most of the time telling me that I had a bad modem, a bad CPU, not enough memory, etc. I finally just hung up and wrote a long letter to Suddenlink.net's office which I expect to be ignored also.
All that I can say about this company is that they are the very worst of all of the ISP.s that have ever served this area. They are arrogant, rude, and worst of all, they offer no sign of relief for our slow download problems and even less sign of caring. They are already talking rate increases next year and when that happens we are going before the city council to start whatever procedure that can be done to eliminate their monopoly in this area and give us RR or Cox again.
The Suddenlink service is so totally bad in every area that I absolutely cannot find words to adequately describe it.

| Completely agree that Suddenlink is HORRIBLE in Greenville
I was one of the first 25 high speed cable customers of Cox's here in Greenville many years ago when they launched the service. I have been a happy customer for many years, but now I am ready to switch.
I use my connection for Vonage VOIP, web browsing, e-mail, video chat via iChat on Mac OS X, and the occasional FTP downloads. I have NEVER had a quality Vonage phone call and after over 15 tech support calls with Vonage tier 1 tech support in New Jersey and about 40 line quality tests, I am CERTAIN this is a Suddenlink problem. UGH!!!

| suddenlink is trash suddenlinks sucks in arkansas. internet connection could be working one minute then have to unplug the cable modom or router another minute later.by the way when the internet does work .... I bet when im on the computer im half the time its slower than 56 k dial up..hell i used to have 30 k dial up and it was faster than this crap....haven to unplug the cable modom once every 20 or 25 minutes. this is sickning and all tech suport does is tell me the same thing turn off the computer unplug the cable modom and router .wait then replug in and turn computer on. ive told them before that it doesnt fix it it only works for about 20 minutes and it does this again.
In fact they said its no need for concern for its natural for a connection to stop a few times an hour and have to unplug the modom. and the tech suport guy told me that broadband ranges will go up and down it doesnt matter if you have sudden link or yahoo or verizon. that ocasionaly your speeds will drop down slower than dial up.....
can you beleave that the guy was telling me this crap. he has to be lieing surely . but the onl;y internet available is suddenlink and dial up were i live..its so stupied though yahoo dsl is available like 4 blocks from my house but isnt avilable to my street thats just crumby
to tell the truth im starting to miss dial up at least i could load a page on dial up even if it took 5 minutes or longer
and downloading forget it, its just rediculous how does a computer go from being able to download a 300 mb file in 30 mintes...then i could set there and try to download the exact same file again 300mb same exact file now...and it shows the time of 24 hours to finish the download.this is just pure crap !!!!!!

| Re: suddenlink is trash Suddenlink also stinks in Humboldt County, California.
I loved Cox, even here where we have only one cable choice, only one fiberoptic cable coming into the county, and frequent outages of just about everything.
What are you calling a slow download?
Can anybody top ll kb/sec??
And "streaming video" (a tiny streaming video, such as a 1-minute, 45-second news clip) that only manages to rustle up the energy to show two frames through the endire broadcast?
When SuddenLink first blew into town, my downloads were top speed, just like before (that is, when the cable wasn't out). Suddenly -- without warning or cause -- it went to a consistent 11 kb/sec. I called and set the phone on speaker while I cooked dinner, we ate dinner, we cleaned up, and we watched an episode of Full House.
Finally they came on and a very nice lady told me there was no problem at their end. She volunteered to consult with the supervisor, who said there was no problem at their end. The supervisor concluded it was "a compatibility issue" with my computer.
I explained that it was the same download speed on all four computers in the house -- and miraculously, when I took my laptop to either of the other two SUDDENLINK-POWERED WiFi hotspots in town, downloads were lightning-fast.
Their suggestion?
Call EVERY WEBSITE where I might want to watch streaming video or download something and explain the problem and ask for their suggestion regarding my unique compatibility issues on THIS computer.
(Of course I jumped right on the phone with FoxNews and they were only too happy to help me......BWAHAHAHAHAH!)
THE PUNCH LINE:
I hung up in disgust, clicked on an-almost-five-minute news clip, and IT WORK PERFECTLY!! So I downloaded some huge file, just for fun... and it shot right up to hundreds and hundreds of KBs per second, just like before!!
But the problem had nothing to do with them.
We have service outages EVERY WEEK without fail. Could be 15 minutes, 3 hours, or 3 days.
And then there was the time I couldn't get reconnected after an few-minute outage and they told me I hadn't been on the internet AT ALL -- since they took over, in fact -- because my modem did not appear on their system.
I told them I was on the internet working at least 8 hours a day, and was on until 10 minutes earlier...
and they said that was impossible.
While I tried to make him understand what I meant by, "Y-E-S I W-A-S," I was magically reconnected, to which the technician replied: "Well I don't know what to tell you, Ma'am. I mean, that's great, but it doesn't make any sense."
I HATE SUDDENLINK!!! | |

We had Charter, then Suddenlink became our new provider. It has been nothing but problems. Slow speeds, CS almost non-existant, refusal of bill credits, and just a lack of communication. And that itself is sad, a communication company that LACKS in any communications. I wish I had Charter back. (I can't believe I said that)

I started off with Charter 5 yrs. ago and they have since been bought out by Suddenlink. Connectivity is severely degraded. Getting a decent download speed is a joke. I pay for a 512/128 package (at least thats what is was with Charter) I get a mind numbing 148/83 now. My explanation for the topside ratings: Pre-sales: there was none, was in the brood who were auto-whored from Charter
Install Coord: The 1 guy I have had here did exactly what I needed him to do ran new cable for the TV problem we had.
Connection Rel: Easy one....THERE ISN'T ANY!
Tech Support: Love having some CSR try to tell me that "spyware" was to blame - EHHHH nice try this was after a fresh install of the entire O/S
Services: Same thing for Connection Rating
::UPDATE:: Have now changed over to Verizon DSL. Much better connection. I have a few problems to iron out if I could actually talk to a Tier 3 tech. Will be writing a new review.
Value for the money: I'm not getting close to what I'm paying for, hance no value.
Am currently in search of other ISP options up to and including CAS

I go to La Tech University and we can have High Speed internet in the dorms because on campus service is slow and you cannot download, it is blocked at the switches. Last year i had Cox HSI and was thoroughly impressed. I had a full bandwidth ranging from 3-5mbps. This year i reopened my account but with Suddenlink. I have worked in ITS for a couple of years back home, and am familiar with WAN because i use to install fiber optic connections between schools. Well to make a long story short... when i first plugged in my modem i was only getting 180kbps down and 180kbps up (.18mbps down and up) so i did some prodding around myself and found that they had connected me to the wrong gateway(node) i was connected to the one for another part of town. Well after about two hours on the phone with various level technical support people, i tell them what the problem is and finally a couple days after i tell them they switched it and i am now enjoying my high speed internet(sarcastic), i am only averaging around 2mpbs down and 500kbps up (good up but horrible down) sometimes the downstream drops to 500-700kbps.... horrible erratic. I am horribly disgusted with Suddenlink and think they have piss poor services and customer support. What happened to Cox? If it aint broke dont fix it, is what i always say?

I've had this cable service since 1991 when it was "River Communications" and has since operated under several different names. It was a rural area, now turning into suburban. I think services have been oversold for the equipment and I've had ongoing issues with cable TV reception and recent issues with cable internet. As of this date (March, 2007) there has been improvement, especially with TV reception, but I had to be very assertive in dealing with tech support and quality is by no means assured at all times. I have frequent outages that I hope are related to upgrading equipment in my area. Slow internet speed and latency problems are constant. And would you believe, they raised my rates! It's a constant battle and frustration. Most of my neighbors seem to have moved to satellite for their TV and are using dial-up for their internet.

Suddenlink, which took over for Cox cable in Eastern, NC has become an angry joke since it's "trueswitch" in October of '06. The presumed ease of the switchover was to be facilitated by a program which never worked until mid November, prompting dozens of calls for service and no credible answers from their support staff. To date, many customers in this area are still complaining of webmail difficulties, internet speed, and lack of customer service. It's like they fired everyone at Cox and replaced them all with mean-spirited, technically incompetant, not my problem types. A recent email complaint was answered by a form letter reminding me to make the switch-over (which had taken place a month ago.) Avoid this company at all costs.

Had Cox here in beautiful Humboldt County, CA for the past 4 years and was for the most part pleased. DL was ~3Mb, upload was around 500kb. After the local Cox franchise was recently bought by Suddenlink things went bad fast. DL speeds the past few nights were slower than dialup dipping to as low as 1-2KB! Though I'm a good distance from ATTs CO I'd rather have a slower but (hopefully) much more reliable DSL connection than the sometimes faster but very spotty Suddenlink cable connection.
I had to DL a 183MB file last night for work and was dropped twice as the speeds slowed to a snails pace ..... shades of the 'ol dialup days!
Baaaaaaad, baaaaaaad Suddenlink.

The letter below explains the basic details, but 48 hours straight downtime for the entire city (pop. ~50,000) with no warning or explanation is just plain bad business.
My service plan was 5Mb/768kb for $54.95 per month. This included a modem and dynamic IP. I never once had a problem with the service while it was run by Cox, but the day Suddenlink took over things went bad in a hurry.
I've just finished sending the following letter to their corporate headquarters explaining why I'm canceling my service with Suddenlink:
On Sunday, November 11, at midnight, the Suddenlink cable internet services in the Stillwater, OK area went down because of routing problems during the switchover from Cox to Suddenlink control. Full connectivity was not restored until Tuesday, November 13, at about 1:00 AM. This was just over 48 hours of downtime for a planned outage a completely unacceptable amount of time.
Had you warned your customers of the intended outage, the situation might have been easier to stomach; however, there was no notice by mail, email, or phone, much less any information posted on your website. When technical support representatives were contacted to check on the reasons for the outage and the estimated time to restoration of services, they gave conflicting messages. I have copied and pasted a snippet of a tech support chat below (Roderick is the Technical Support Representative):
al> on sat. I was told sunday, on sunday I was told sunday night, on monday morning( 2am ) I was told first thing in the morning........if this was a planned upgrade or maintenance, would it not be good practice to notify customers in advance?
al> ...?
Roderick> It was not a planned outage.
Roderick> I don't know why it is out.
al> your customer service says differently, they say its an 'upgrade'?
Because of the poor customer service exhibited by the complete lack of communication with your customers both before and during this planned outage, I have decided to cancel my internet services through Suddenlink. Despite my pleasure with my cable internet service for the past two years, the grossly mismanaged switch to Suddenlink administration of local cable internet services has convinced me my money is better spent elsewhere. I have never been so dissatisfied with an internet service provider.
I have written a letter to the editor of my local newspaper to remind the public to call your billing department and demand a refund for the service downtime. If your company cant learn how to better communicate with its customers, as well as employ competent network managers and systems administrators, then you can expect more of your customers will send you a clear message with their wallets.

been a charter customer for like 5 years. with a few exceptions was happy with them. when the charter to suddenlink sale happened, nothing changed.... at first. then, they switched us off the Charter backbone and immediately i saw a 15% DECREASE in speeds when tested at many different testing sites. where i used to get around 3100 to 3200, i now am lucky to get 2800 at ANY time. pings are horrible and when i contacted tech support, i was told i have their 3meg service (like i didnt know that) and i am getting better than 2000, so thats all they can do. i asked.... why dont i get a full 3 meg like i did under charter? she didnt have any answer to that, just that with my anti-virus and firewall running, that would slow down my actual speed. of course, she didnt mention that the higher speeds under Charter were with the firewall and anti-virus running too. didnt seem to matter that everything here is the same as it was under Charter. well, everything is the same except my download speeds from suddenlink. i was told once again that i was getting better than 2000, and thats all they cared about. the ping times werent important, she said, just the speed, and since i was above 2000 (even tho i am paying for 3 meg, not 2) there was nothing she could see wrong with my service and then she asked if there was anything else she could do for me. like she did anything to begin with.
now i am reading forum messages about throttling and capping on suddenlink, something Charter never did. i guess they know that most of us in WV cant get dsl, so they're gonna screw us over by charging for 3 meg service and then throttling us back to dialup speeds. i dont do a lot of downloading files, but when i do, i dont want to wait forever for them to finish. so far, i havent noticed throttling, and when i asked the tech woman about it, she said they intend to honor the Charter unlimited service that we had bought. at least for now......
as far as connection reliability, i have to say i havent had any real troubles there.

if you are even remotely a power user, ie: check email or surf the web, seriously reconsider this internet service. no seriously! if you play xbox live (or any online gaming), use voip (vonage, broadvox, etc..), download any multimedia (video trailers, music, artwork, software), shop online, or share your connection between any number of devices, i would reccomend against suddenlink! they have a poor capping policy that will reduce your throughput by 90% (from 3.09Mb/s to 330.85kb/s)! if you have any issues that require "technical support" you wont find answers from any suddenlink tech i have been passed off to. if you have another broadband provider to choose from i would check it out. the bottom line here is check out the suddenlink/cebridge forums here on bbr/dslr to get a feel for how customers besides myself feel about the service: »Suddenlink and »Suddenlink
