Aliant Ultra High speed is by far the most reliable compared to the competition which is cable. Aliant Ultra is advertised as a 5 mbps download and 640 kbps and I consistantly receive 5 mbps download and 545 kbps upload throughout the day, even during peak times. I have the added value package which gives me long distance phone calling at 5 cents per minute, free virus checker and TV on my PC.
In December 2008 Aliant started to throttle back my connection but still can't complain as the line is steady and down times are rare. Most times my connection speed is still 5 mbps download. Although Aliant is cutting back on services and raising their rates their Vibe Ultra is still a good value for the money.

I use the Ultra - have tried to tweak to get above 5 mb/sec Seems to be upper limit - overall very satisfied but would like the ablity to use tweaks etc to improve performance just for the sake of doing it

They are a straight forward , one of the original ISP providers who as much as possible tried to blanket the province with internet service. Rural coverage still remains an issue as DSL does have its distance limits. Most likely if they stay with copper services, they will fall behind in the future as tech advances increases speeds beyond what copper dsl provides. It will be interesting to see if they continue their all area upgrades for all of the province , or will they just concentrate in urban areas only.

"Totally open! Torrents are fast! no download limits. Servers are OK!"
"DSL isn't the best, I live far from CO so connection is only 3mb/5mb"
"Solid reliability better than control freaks at rogers!"

We switched to aliant after rogers repeatedly told us we had a virus on our system and cut us off with no warning. Aliant doesn't hooked up their "ultra" dsl for us but old us we lived too far from the CO to get the speeds advertised. I get 3000/520. Which is a lot less than the 8000/1000 i was getting with rogers, but it is a totally open network and i can even run smtp servers. I recommend aliant over rogers because it allows true internet connectivity. Instead of having someone pick and choose what you are allowed to do!

(I am an employee of the primary DSL manufacturer supporting NBTel's DSL roll out - Alcatel. My opinions are not necessarily reflective of my employer or of NBTel. My opinions expressed here are strictly as a customer/user of the service)
I called and received the service on the same day, which was great. It worked right away and I had my VPN software working that afternoon to allow access back to my office (out of province). I have had no problems with the static Class A 10. address they provide or with the proxy service that maps my 10 address to a public address for Internet surfing.
The modem is the original Newbridge MainstreetXpress 27020 (Alcatel purchased Newbridge in May '00). The modem is full DSL compliant and can provide up to 640 kbits / 6 megbits service. I believe NBTel shapes customer traffic to a 2 mbits/sec rate (250kbytes/sec) at the gateway router in Saint John..
The only difficulty I, and my wife, have had is the mailserv outages and unannounced DLSAM upgrades which leave the service off-line for a short period during the day (uncommon). There have also been some outages related to connectivity to Montreal and Toronto which NBTel do not list in their problem website which I'm sure leads to some customers getting frustrated and blaming NBTel instead of CAnet (who's problem it really is).
All in all a great service, much better then Bell Canada's High Speed Sympatico service in Ontario.

I ordered the Vibe Internet Service which is aDSL. Quote "Vibe brings the customer this amazing speed for both sending and receiving information (2 Mbits/sec download and up to 640 kbps upload)" well, i get maxed out at 250kb/sec download and 60kbps/upload, so I'm happy with that. The install was free for the month, so that was nice. The service is on a Static Internal IP, and dynamic external IP (which takes quite a job to even resolve), and currenly NOT using PPPoE.
The one big problem with the service is the reliablity. Service loss has come to be expected throughout the day and anyone who relies on the service for anything, is a fool. Anywhere between 3 to 10 times a day, service is halted, all connections go down for all customers. thank god nothing critical runs off of this service... or at least I hope.
