    My Other Reviews·Stargate
July 09: When Expediant recently decided to discontinue residential DSL service, we had to find another option. Fortunately, our phone company, Consolidated Communications (formerly NPTCo), was offering a deal on their 3 Mbps plan for $14.95 per month for 24 months. (reverts to $34.95 per month afterwards)

This is ASDL which is supposed to offer 3 Mbps download and 512 upload. So far, the numbers are very close. They provide a Paradyne Zhone 6218 modem / router that also has wireless capability and the necessary phone line filters. You can also get up to 10 email accounts and 250 MB of personal webspace.

Install was a breeze. The only install issue was they were 1 day late in turning it on due to the overwhelming demand to their current promotion. The customer service rep on the phone and in person at their rt 910 location, where I picked up the equipment, were both helpful and very courteous and answered all my questions.

As with my previous DSL modem, there is no on off switch. So we use an under monitor surge protector that has switched outlets on the rear. Have used these for years, works great. In addition to turning your modem off when not in use, you can also turn your sound other items such as an external harddrive off conveniently with a button right in front of you. If you plan to use the wireless feature, it may be a bit of inconvenience but I personally like the ability of turning the modem off when away for the day.

I did have one small issue that was new to me. When a scan of ports was done online, I had some open that were not open before. Simply was the router needing some personalization. I just went in and turned off the unneeded services on the WAN network. But anyone with router experience would probably already know this.

Will post an update after some time with the service. So far so good!

I am on the 6M package with their Digital Phone product, VoIP
They gave me a Comtrend WiFi router which seems to be working fine.
During the Ike storm I hooked up my generator to the router and used my laptop to get on line and it worked. They were up when all other services were not. I plugged in my ATA and the phone worked also. Cool.

I have had Consolidated DSL 3mg (Faster) for almost 4 years now. I love it.. HUGE step up from dial up!! 39.95/month (if you don't go with a promo & no contract). If you don't plan on going anywhere, a 1 year contract (verbal agreement by phone to get a promo- you don't get a promo without a contract-- simple) can save a subscriber up to $14/mo or get 3 mos free DSL service--- depends on what promo they are running...

Only down side I've found is the DSL modem/router Consolidated provides. (you have your choice of modem or a wifi capable router at no additional charge) The equipment is Zyxel- Prestige 660. Modem is only good if you only have 1 computer; router will work up to 4 computers. Modem is good, works fine.. but seems after time it will begin to overheat & in time will just stop working-- Consolidated will give you new equipment if you take the broken/non working one back to them... fair enough. The wireless router-- well... has the same issue; but also does not have a very good range for signal. My husband and I have computers across the hall from each other & he has a hard time getting the signal from the router. Our solution was to change to the modem Consolidated provides & purchase a D-Link router of our own. That fixed the issue.

Consolidated offers both dynamic & static IP -- Static IP would be another $20/month.

I am happy with the services, the company is here local & I can walk into their office any weekday. Tech support is a good group & they are there 24/7-- and based in Texas... which is always a plus! The reps there are friendly & willing to help with any issues... but recommend that you call tech support first, they don't have technical people in the office.

I recommend this service to anyone needing a consistent connection to the internet for a reasonable price!

We've been with Consolidated Communications (DSL) for more than 4 years and are extremely pleased with the service. Our family is online several hours daily and/or weekly. We rarely have down time; even then it is a very short period (ie.: minutes - less than an hour).

The same day of sign-up, we were issued an Efficient modem with two filters, lines and instructions on a 12 months program. Although, they may have changed the sign-up procedure and/or equipment.

We would prefer a lower monthly cost however, realize the choices are few to none in our area. After five years of dial-up (other ISP), Consolidated's DSL was a very welcome relief.

We test the connection's performance weekly to twice a month, they have always tested higher than advertised speeds with little to no packet loss.

    Summary | Thumbs Up!
Consolidated Communications DSL is stable, dependable and consistent.
