Several years ago my property owners association contracted with Hotwire Communications to provide cable, Internet and phone service to our owners. It has been a disaster!
Our POA president, Mr. Alan Platner, architected this arrangement. In return for putting in fiber for free and an ONT at each residence, we got a greatly reduced rate for services. It hasn't been worth it, not in any sense. With ping times well above 200ms and uploads at less than 1Mbs and downloads at speeds of less than 2Mbs, the service is slow. Worse than that, it's unreliable. I've had over 100 service interruptions lasting several hours over the last two years. What makes this problematic is that when the service goes down, it's cable, phone and Internet, the whole shebang!
Our POA has "shared" this "great advantages" to other associations. They hate us for having put them into the same problem set that we have. What are those problems? Video breaks up into pixelation and sound freezes on cable, phone calls drop like cell calls all the time, Internet link accesses freeze halfway through a page.
The worst facet of Hotwire Communications service is it's "cusstomer" service (no that's not a typo), because you cuss every time you have to call customer suppor)t. An average wait time is 30 minutes. When you get to 2nd level or 3rd level support where they might be able to help you, your call will probably drop.
Pass on this company. If you are thinking about moving into a building or association with Hotwire, look elsewhere. I'm most frustrated by the lack of anything resembling deterministic service, the abysmal customer support, and how unlikely anything is going to change in the future.
Think of it this way, you could get a $35 / month MiFi 3G 4G or 4G LTE mobile router and be much better off. That's sad when you think of the promise of "last mile" fiber.

Review: Terrible. Stay Away. Substandard product, slow connections when its working, frequently just stops working, sometimes days at a time. Customer service is functionally nonexistant. Phone tree that is never answered, messages and emails are never replied too. I just spent literally 29 days trying to resolve a billing issue and still have not been able to speak with a supervisor, or anyone that can do more than read what they have in front of them on the computer screen. I spent this whole time following the instructions of each representative I spoke with, only to hear from the next one that I was told the wrong instructions. Might be the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. I'm switching companies as soon as possible.

Hello-I wanted to tell you about an employee "Thomas Ganezelli" I called yesterday because I was having a horrible problem replying to e-mails- Thomas worked with me for a long while- and then was copying all the information messages- and made sure to get back to me with answers later that day on anything he had to look into. Thomas has gone over and beyond what I expected....and he needs to be thanked. I felt that everyone should know what great customer service Hotwire has.

* very poor connection speed, high latency, oversubscribed * downstream speed in the evenings in good times around 200kbps, can go to 10 kbps, interruptions can go for several seconds * customer service is non-existant * they are lying about service trying to sign you up
This provider is the worst I've ever seen. If you don't have any other provider, get wireless from your cell phone company, or get a dialup, it will work better.

The off-campus student apartment complex I live in has hotwire for TV/Internet. Our internet speed and uptime is superb. 100 MB files download in under 2 min and have no issues streaming HD videos. Our channel lineup is decent with about 5 or 6 premium movie channels (None HD). Most of the channels are good quality with the exception of the history channel. Sometimes the audio is garbled on that channel. Its great value as I only pay $25 /mo for internet and TV (included in my rent as a communications fee). Also every device gets its own public IP address and all ports are open/no throttling. Very happy with this service.

Hotwire is a building-level communications company, they service apartment buildings. I haven't had such a horrible internet connection since I was on dialup (and even that was more reliable). Every day, I wish I could move out of here just because of them.
We have no choice in our building, Hotwire is the only choice.
2009 update - I managed to ditch Hotwire the only way I knew how... moving. Hotwire is a prime example of why you should check who your cable provider is before you move in. If you live in any building owned by Philadelphia Management, you will not only hate your apartment, you will hate your internet connection as well.

Hotwire communications advertises broadband service, but doesn't provide anywhere near it. During peak usage hours expect to have a service more comparable to dial-up.
I live in an apartment complex that provides ONLY hotwire internet, and if you enjoy streaming movies, online videogames, or any other bandwidth sensitive applications I would highly advise that you stay away. Ping times will make most games unplayable, and streaming movies/music will need to be set to the lowest quality to ensure you don't have to buffer every 30 seconds.
Their customer service is a joke, only available during WEEKDAYS and normal business hours. Think about that. If you work normal hours (like 90% of the population) you have about a 1 hour time frame in the evening to talk to a live person. Otherwise, expect to send multiple e-mails that never get answered.
It is cheap, so I should have known better when I moved in, but what's done is done. I could only recommend this to people who are looking for a cheap semi-broadband service, without need for any post-2001 internet services.
Stay away!
