No DSL available - had Direcpc before this and it was slower more expensive and less reliable.

Speed package is 3000/256 - I get 2700-3000 down consistently usually 256+/- up.

Motorola SB5100 modem. Installation was good I've had to change a few things to get the signal where I wanted it for my network.

Overall I'm quite satisfied, wish it was cheaper!

After using the service for close to a year I have nothing but praise for the service. It just works. There have been outages (hurricanes etc) but when I reset my router everything returns.

I added VOIP 3-4 months ago and have had good service with that too.

    08-17-08
My download speed now is 6M but my upload is still only 256k. I am on this web site looking for an alternative ISP. I have numerous internet accounts with available disk space that I can't use because of the slow upload speed.

I Ordered It Back In Late Or Early Feb. The Installation To No Time And Before I Knew It I Was Online.I Ordered The 2.0 MB Package And So Far Its Been Blazing Fast. The Monthly Price Is About $42.99 Bucks But I Have A Bundle So Its About $99.18 But I Think Its Good For The Money.Compared To EMBARQ That Would Be About The Same Price For A Bundle And Any Way DSL Isnt Avaliable. My Modem Is Made By Motorola And Its Good To. I Like That It Doesnt Take Up Alot Of Room.Thr Service Is Very Reliable To.The Only Bad Experience Is When Some Times At Peak Hours It May Flucuates From 2.0 MB To About 1.9 MB And Thats Great For Me And Some Times Even At Peak Hours It May Get Up To 2080 KBPS.I Love This Service. But Some Times It Depends On Different Areas. DSL Might Be Better Than Cable Internet And Cable Internet Might Be Better Than DSL Internet Ask Around Before You Get Either Service But So Far Cable Has Been Wonderful To Me But I Might Try DSL But I Love My Cable Bottom Line.Once You Go Cable You Will Never Go Back. And If I Get DSL Im Goning Back To My Cable.

    CABLE 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so far the service is good ive had it ever since january of this year but the only thing i disagree with is that the prices go up every month but other than that its great but if you can get dsl get it i when dsl becomes avalibile im getting it because i can get 5meg for the price of 2meg from the cable company so...............

This is the only type of broadband that I can get where I live. At least that I know of.
Their email support is a little on the slow side. But it is friendly and answers your questions without a run around.
They offer only basic email services. There is no usenet offered.
I originally orders 1.5 mbps, but decided to up it to 3.0 mbps for a about $11.00 more.
The order and install process went smoothly.
They give you a Motorola Cable modem.
Over all I am satisfied with their service.

    Update : 01-20-2008
Lately there have been a lot of times that the internet went down. It has been happening every few days for the last month or so.

    Update : 04-21-2008
Their service is getting consitantly worse. There are a lot of blackouts, It sometimes takes hours to be able to reconnect to the interent. This happens a few times a week. Also their speed is slow most of the time.

    Northland...What a Joke

When I had Northland, I experienced the same issues as you are (see my review). By far the worst cable ISP around. Go with DSL if you can.

Northland Cable is the best available around Marble Falls. It is fairly reliable, but has an annoying habit of going down every time there is a hard rain. Cable boxes out in the yards are coming apart and very old. The company seems to not care about that, so I suspect their major items are similarly poorly maintained.

With cable TV from the same company, I pay around $120 per month and that is quite expensive compared to other places I've lived. No competition is the probable cause.

    hey

all your company has to do is some major upgrades then you will be good to go because i have northland and its really good since theyve done some upgrades to this area now my speeds are consistant and never go down when even 350 users get on an see i have the 2.0 meg package and i get 1989 kbps ever time its great i love it but still going to swtich to dsl when it becomes avalible in my area from embarq higher speeds for a cheaper price i was going to get the 5.0 meg or even 10 if i can get it so if the norhtland in your area isnt doing their job then switch to your dsl provider which is usually your phone provider so good luck.

I considered getting Embarq DSL, but not being able to get without a home phone threw me off. They wanted just a bit less for 1.5 mb, but the home phone prices are ridiculous. I haven't had home phone in 10 years. Northland able offering me just internet helped. I ordered 2mb package, not sure on upload, it's right at 100kb/s i get.

Getting it ordered with the first CS rep was a pain, she tried selling me a bundle with cable/phone/internet together. Kept telling me how much i would save bundling. How can i save when i don't need your phone or cable TV? Hung up, got another rep and finished in no time. Install was midways thru the afternoon when they said they would be here. Dude was fast, climbed the pole, drilled one hole, maybe had to run 15 foot of cable at the most. dude didn't even break a sweat.

They brought the bottom line surboard by motorola.

During the day i keep speeds of 1300-1700 consistently, just depends on the load.

Nighttime is a diffrent story..i think most of my town is in the bed by 10:30pm, because after that time, my cable flies. No less then 1900 and it does creep on up to 2400 at times in the middle of the night. I haven't run a test yet at night but will soon

    My Other Reviews·Spectrum Communica..
Northland got our cable TV and Internet (Motorola Surfboard) installed nicely and working good the first time, in about an hour. The Internet service has had few outages (3 or 4) in the last year, with most being half a day (the longest took a little over 24 hours). Every time that we have called tech support, they have been aware of the outage (had it posted on their call system message), and have been helpful with resolving a couple non-outage related issues.

The downside to having such an inexpensive bundle, is that we only have 512/128kbps speeds. List prices are high for all the speeds, but the Northland office here (Moses Lake, Wa) is almost always running contract specials. If you are not able to get a special rate, or can afford it, go with Zipp Fiber if it is available($39/mo for upto 10mbps both ways, 3-5mbps down average, almost always 8+mbps up.), or possibly Qwest DSL (similar unbundled prices, but faster speeds per price point).

Our overall experience with Northland has been great. Being the speed nut that I am, we will probably switch to Zipp (which was extremely reliable when I had it) when I get a better job.

I use the digital cable/BB-3000/256/internet phone. My speeds usually stay around 2800/229 so I'm not complaining about their service. When it's really busy the phone will break up sometimes. The triple play NOW is only for six months for new subscribers.Since Northland Cable is the only BB provider in this area I don't have a choice. As long as the price stays right for the triple play plan they will have a customer.I'd hate to go back to dail up but if the price advantage ever dries up ma bell, dish network, and msn dail up will have me back as a paying customer.DMM

    My Other Reviews·Embarq
    ·Dish Network
I am apparently the second reviewer of Northland Cable, and I am experiencing the same issues as the previous reviewer: extremely slow connection speeds, latency times that are through the roof, and useless tech support that cannot do anything about it. I've been a Northland customer for over a year, and things have steadily gone downhill for the past 6 months. Like the previous reviewer, I too am an avid gamer, and because the latency times will skyrocket to about 1000ms on several occasions throughout the day, gaming is all but impossible. Speed tests clock me at around 300 kbps download and 50-100 kbps upload. Keep in mind that I'm paying for 3000 kbps download and 384 kbps upload. Outrageous! I might as well connect using dial up. Click here for a screen shot of a typical traceroute command ran any time during the day: »/r0/download/1···tled.JPG

Numerous calls to tech support have yielded no results. They are only able to correct problems on my end, such as signal strength. From the traceroute command, it's easy to see that the problem lies with heavily overloaded/outdated routers farther up on Northland's network.

Bottom line: GO WITH DSL in order to get your money's worth! Paying a premium price for sub-par service doesn't add up.

We live in the Starkville MS Area, for which Northland is the only Cable Internet Service Provider

The apartment complex provides us with free basic cable TV through Northland Cable, so we figured we would save some money by getting their broadband internet services, since the DSL requires us to pay for a phone line connection also.

We have the Express Pro Plus package, which is supposed to be 3.0Mbps down and 384 Kbps up. The speeds never reach the advertised speeds, and the latency is horrible during "peak" hours, which is basically when we use it. During "peak" hours, which seems to range from 5 PM to 2 AM (when we really use the internet), the latency seems to be equal to a 56K modem. All of my roommates and I enjoy playing online games, and this is one of the main reasons we ordered the most expensive package offered for residents. We are not able to play our online games during the times we want because the latency is so high, sometimes reaching 600 - 800 ms. We never had these issues with DSL, and my family, who uses Roadrunner/Comcast in another part of MS does not experience these issues speed and latency issues.

I know that this is a big apartment complex and Cable Internet degrades as the more number of users use it, but I think Northland needs to use the money they are making to upgrade their equipment to handle the loads if people are paying the premium prices for broadband. If I am paying 60 dollars a month for broadband internet, I would like it to feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I don't want to feel like i'm paying 60 dollars for dial up speeds, it's not the 1990's anymore. We basically have to wait until about 2-3 AM to play our games and surf normally, and being in school, this is hard to do since we have classes in the morning.

Also, there have been a few times where the internet did not work completely, and although the tech support was helpful, we were not compensated for the days in which the service was not provided.

In conclusion, if I had the choice, I would rather go with the DSL offered in this area, while paying the extra money for the telephone line. Hopefully Northland gets bought out by a bigger company like Comcast, who can invest more in the infrastructure, to truly provide the services they advertise.
