12/2011 - Went to check the speed packages, 6/1 no longer offered. 12/1 is now offered. Dropped by the office and it was a buck a month cheaper!! Signed up, few hours later, pulling speed tests of 11.54 down, 0.95 up. Not bad.
Reliability is pretty solid. Very few outages this past year. A couple of the outages were no fault of the cable company (rather, stupid drivers taking down phone poles).
------- I've had the parents on this service for several years. They had the very basic 768/256 package. While it has been reliable overall, those speeds just aren't enough for today's web sites or multi-user/device house.
Upgraded them to a 6/1 package. $64/mo. Got home to see a 2.5/900 speed test. Gave national support a call. Eventually got pushed up to tier 2. They poked around, re-provisioned the modem and eventually put a call in to tier 3 that revealed a known issue.
Went to bed. Next morning, woke up to a 5/900 speed test. That's acceptable. Though, I'd rather see something closer to 5.7/950.

For some reason I now get 6 Mb/s service instead of the 2 Mb/s I got for the last 5 years here at our mountain condo in Sapphire Valley near Cashiers, NC. Nice boost indeed.

Choosing to live in a rural community is almost a death knell for good Internet service. None of the "biggies" are here, Fiber runs 300 feet from my home but the technology used to deliver Internet is old-world technology. As a retired Optical Network Designer I am apalled.
I threw out CenturyLink after going to Texas Legislature fo force them to deliver service. Over a 2-year period they attained 86.4% uptime.
Northland has been doing better, however, over the past 3 months they have begun to be unreliable. Currently they are at 94% and I expect 5-Nines and faster speed. Cost is way to high compared to other choices. It appears my only hope will be WiMAX if we ever get it. Alternative is to move when the economy improves.

$64 per month about 10 days "No contracts, can switch between plans at no charge" "Spotty connection, especially during peak hours" "Overpriced, unqualified personnel (Flint, Tx)"

$64 a month for 6Mbps/1Mbps. The 6Mbps/512Kbps package was $50/mo, but I needed the extra upstream. I am also paying an extra $5 fee (I believe) for not having cable service. Their website alternates between calling these packages 7Mbps and 6Mbps, but they are in actuality 6Mbps. This is the cause of the low rating for 'Pre Sales information'.
I have had service from this provider in the past and was not satisfied & cancelled, but came back w/ all the problems with Centurylink. For the first month or two, it was "acceptable". Perhaps on average about 5 hours of outage a week & good performance outside of a couple hours during primetime. Performance has gradually degraded as the months have passed, and at this point (June 10th), I have steady 25%+ packetloss during the afternoon hours and degraded performance during primetime. The only time the connection operates properly is from around midnight-1AM til 8-9AM.
The local office serving my area (Flint) appears to be highly incompetent. The 24-hour national tech support line is decent quality, but the most they can do is to send a ticket to your local office.
-------
update (6/17)... Flint, Tx plant manager visited my location today and stated that downstream 17 SNR was acceptable and that only the average SNR mattered, rather than the range within the specified test period. when corrected, talked about his years of experience and that since i wouldn't 'work with him', he was leaving.
update (6/21)... Connection seems better now with downstream power level adjusted. Pretty sure the only issue now is the SNR. Continuous 1-5% packetloss on first hop for about 20 hours a day. Still having a few drops, but not as many. Perhaps 30m-60m a day of 5-10% packetloss.
update (6/28)... DSL
update (7/7)... I was given a refund for my last month of service, which I appreciate. After the 6-17 visit, I dealt w/ a different technician @ Northland and it did seem that I had some improvement in the service.... but still was having the near continuous packetloss (albeit in the single digits, rather than double digits) & problems during peak usage hours.
The visit on the 17th by the plant manager (head technician) was my biggest concern, really... He presented faulty information and when corrected, took offense. In such conditions, it's not surprising that troubleshooting failed...

$45 per month about 3 days "Speed not guarranteed. Speed not reliable." "Expensive. Not worth it unless it is the only game in town."

Worked great for a few months. Now it goes to 1.8mbps at night and only 3 mbops during the day. Tech support says they don't guarantte 6gbs (although they charge for it), and mine is ok. Bull. DSL is faster for half the price. But they are both so unreliable here in Greenwood, SC, I use BOTH with a dual WAN router.
Tech support for Northland is some great, sometimes useless. Only thing good about the cable is I just use it for internet, and there is no contract. Had it over a year now.

$65 per month about 3 days "It's not dialup" "Old technology, not fast enough for the modern Internet, expensive" "There's no competition, so you're stuck with them"
| |
There's not much to say. They are the only game in town, so you're stuck with paying outrageous prices for bandwidth that can't even handle streaming HD movies from the Internet. We pay $65 for 6/1 that is in reality more like 5/768k on a good day.

I have had Northland internet for almost 2 years now and I have recently upgraded to 6mbps download and 1mbps upload for $39.99 for a year. it was great for the first month but now my speed has been cut in half! I'm only getting 2.5mbps download and at best .5mbps upload. I am paying for high speed and getting this? I am really fed up with these companies! we need more competition around here so the companies will actually get off their butts and upgrade their archaic equipment. I have a Motorola modem and it seems to work well, my only problem is the connection.

I previously had Northland Cable, the triple play. I found the customer service and technology way below standards. I currently have embarq 10mbps which speed tests pretty close to the full 10mbps. I contemplated on going back to Northland but see that the reviews have not changed and after going in to the office their prices are still outrageous. They are now using tivo boxes as their hddvr boxes with an additional $17.00 per month per box and you don't own the equipment after it is paid for. If you have cable through them and use the tivo you have to purchase their slow internet speeds which max at 6mbps download and 1mbps upload (upload is descent if it in fact runs at that speed. I want verizons new fiber service or comcast 100mbps yes that is correct 100mbps download. Guess here in old Greenwood we will continue to stay behind the times and pay the same rates for less than city standard speeds.

 | | Northland in Central Yep I have been stuck with Northland because it's the only internet(BB) provider in this area. But AT&T ran fiber optic through our neighborhood last Christmas week but still no start up date when it's gonna be up and running. They were nice enough to put an orange connector in my yard, but for now I'm just waiting. You are right about them being overpriced and years behind other cable systems even if they do have a so called fiber optic ran on the main highway.Gosh here it is 2010 and their analog picture quality is no better than when I had them twenty years ago! | |
