"instalation plug-n-play"
"Does not work in a street-powerdown, even if you have an UPS working. Non-suitable for business clients."
"You can't use too much, or else at the day 10 you already had the bandwith cut-down to 2% the original"

The company really have an outstanding "new business" team, for gathering new clients. From the first phone-call to the time it was ready-to-use, i couldn't count a week, even considering the nescesity to make a new cable instalation.

I was suplied free with a Motorola cable modem, that I have to return free of charges if I cancel contract.

Ping is always really below average, no matter the destination. Probably poor structure here in my street (nothing good for gamers)

About the speed, I pay R$105,00/month for 3mb down and 500kb up. But I recive it only for the first week of the month - and then untill the next month I stay stucked with this 128kb-up/down. After calling the TechSuport, I discovered that after you download 30GB, they reduce your speed... and that is informed nowhere else than one tiny little line, hidden in the middle of the contract. No website have the information, neither the commercials (really bad for p2p users!!!).

Besides that, TechSuport always make you wait 10 minutes on the line before initial contact, then after gathering client-information and asking the client to reboot the modem, they forward your call to another 20minutes line, where you always have to explain the problem again. Then after making 2 or 3 more procedures, they always say that you have to wait for a week or two before recieving a visitor in your house.

Well, I really wanna know if "waiting half an hour just to mark an appointment for 2 weeks later" is really a Technical Suport...

And another weird thing is that most of the times after you mark the visit, 2 or 3 days later the issue got solved - but you have to call the ISP and cancel the visit for yourself if you don't wanna pay an extra for it!

And finaly, the worst experience i had with it was after waiting these 2 weeks for the guy to fix my disconected internet: He entered my home, pluged the cable into a diagnosis apparel... Then said to me: This structure instalation is completely out of our standards, It have to be remaid. You can call the Tech-Support to mark a new appointment.

Well, i am gonna cancel this thing and look for something that just works...

Easton,Aroostook,ME
$70 per month (12 month contract)
about 30 days
"Slightly cheaper than the incumbent, easier setup than the incumbent, very good cable modem"
"Contracted Bandwidth =/= Real bandwidth, GB traffic charge, traffic shaping, frequent downtime"
"It is still better than the my recollection of the services provided by the incumbent telco"
Pre Sales information:

Value for money:

Contracted an 8 gbps-link in December of last year but never got over 800 kpbs. Called in 3 months later and donwgraded to an 2 gbps-link (service continued at around 800kbps) only to get a call a couple of months later saying that I had customarily exceeded a non-clearly stated monthly traffic limit. Doing so, beyond costing additional $s, also reduced my bandwidth limit to barely acceptable 120 kbps until each month-end. I was then 'friendly advised' to do a not so cheap upgrade to 4 gbps-link because it would better 'suit' what they understood my needs were. The actual maximum bandwidth never changed significantly (600 to 800 kbps range) except that EVERY month-end, as soon as I reach those ill-explained thresholds, I then have to endure severe bandwidth withdrawal symptoms and rage attacks from other family members.

After I moved over from the leading telco provider to this cable company, my P2P programs all started striking, which I attribute to traffic shaping, something the cable company denies.

Ah, the links are sold to the general public in 3 mbps increments, but not to me for some reason...

"The post sales service is awful"
"You get something little above average"

I have had a contract with them for one year and half now. I didn't try any other companies beforehand. Since TVA didn't provide cable connection in the past and speedy seems little too expensive for me considering I don't really use the phone. I had a combo of master package of television and 2M of internet connection at first, I paid R$120 (US$60) back then. I was good, except they have a quota for 2M connection which is 20GB, download plus upload. Then I moved to an apartment and converted my combo to add telephone, now I am living alone and paying R$120 for standard set of television plus 2M internet and R$35 for the phone. For someone who calls a lot, it is said it's a good deal. For me, internet is the most important, and it is stable. 2M means you can connect some site within Brazil (eg. their homepage, the universities) with a download speed of 2M, I ran the test on the site, it is usually around 700/250. But these days I constantly get a speed of 150-200K when download something fresh using bt. Now they don't check the quota any more, so one can download as much as they want. However, if someone only want the 2M internet, he also has to pay R$100 for that alone, the combo package with all the three, comes with a contract lasting for one year and a half. The price is R$120 for the first year plus the telephone bill depends on much you call, and R$120+R$35 for the rest six months. Their post sales service is really terrible. If something happens, I usually have to wait around 45 minute just get to talk to them, and after that I have to explain and argue with them for an hour to explain something like the bill last month was too big and it was their mistake. For foreigner it is tough. The people there actually are nice, most of time they are patient. One bad thing is what they say is not consistent. If it comes something important, like when the contract ends, it is better to double check. Sometimes when you call to cancel or switch the service, they will offer you some promotion to stay at the package, it could be pretty good.

"Great, just prey you'll never need to talk to Cust. Serv."

I'm in RJ, Brazil, and the options we have down here for broadband are Velox (DSL from our friendly neighborhood ILEC) and NET Virtua (cable). There's also radio and satellite for rural areas.

The highest speeds we get in Brazil are 8 Mbps down / 512 kbps up. I have now the 4 Mbps package. Pretty good.

Installation was pretty clean, although the installer was a dumbass who insisted the service wouldn't work with my onboard NIC, despite my telling him otherwise. Notice I have used this NIC just fine before.

Speed is consistent, and the serevice has never gone down!! Kudos to them on that!! I've heard horror stories about other people around here, but it's been fine here.

Customer service, however, is awful. Upgrading from 2Mbps to 4Mbps was a NIGHTMARE. Upgrading to the TV+broadband option was simply a no-go for me. I heard all kinds of excuses, from the system being down to "a high probability of lightining striking my house" if I had a set top box.

As far as price goes, I pay R$120 (about US$60) for my 4Mbps. Other packages are R$100 for 2Mbps and R$220 for 8Mbps. It's rather expensive by US standards, but it's good value here. Oh yeah, and this industry is a regional monopoly here, like in the US.

    Overall, I recommend it.

UPDATE Nov. 07, 2007: Net Virtua now practices the much loathed traffic shaping on p2p connections. Knock off some points! Everything else (including games -- and some latency which's expected given we're out here in Brazil) works fine. But after 2+ years with them, it's been a smooth ride. Just make sure to use SSH or something for your torrentz fix.

    NetVirtua ??? - Poor man...

    1) Don't you use any P2P?
-- This damn ISP is Traffic Shaping all...
    -- See Wikipedia/Google it!

    2) Avg Latency 250ms is good ??!!
    -- Where?
-- Don't you play any games? (foreign servers)

    3) Have you tried to talk to them?
    -- Omnbudsman is always sleeping...

    4) Ah... Just look at your packet loss... SHAME!
-- Using "Ethereal\WinShark" just to see what you are rcvg
-- is NOT against the law!

    5) They use ARP...
-- This means that 5-15kbps of your bandwidth is lost!

    6) Now they have someone at 224.0.0.X range "sniffing"...
-- Just install PeerGuardian2 and see how many attempts!

    7) Don't even try to make video conferences...
-- You do have bandwidth, you should be able to! But...

    8) Only 10% of the bdw is guaranteed.
-- Other ISP do it better = 90%.

IS THIS GOOD? FOR THAT PRICE? ARE YOU INSANE?

    ======= DO YOU WORK THERE ? =======

NetVirtua SUCKS ! - Just to prove, see this!

It's incredible! Local time (SP/SP-BR) is now 05:20h and my connection is really making me crazy!

Lost 3h trying some settings... and nothing!

Just to prove the statement above, see my results:
    »/tweakr/block:···a=normal

LATENCY IS REALLY ENORMOUS! more than 310ms, without any other program running. At this local time, 05h in the morning, of a saturday... What big traffic could exist on the net? What else to say?

I've logged on with my notebook, and tested too. SAME RESULTS !

Good price for Brazil (U$$50 for 2MB). Great speeds (446kbps download, 115kbps upload), but high latency (125ms).

Some people complain about traffic shapping, but i have torrents at 200kbps without encryption.

It's installed by people without any knowledges, they coudn't install on a old Windows 98 PC here or on my Linux PC [But it's a DHCP connection, there's no secret]

The cable modem is HORRIBLE! It's just a modem, no routing or nothing else.

Great customer service, if it's broken they could fix on the same day, but if there's no one at home, they will bill the service. [Well, the service it's not that good, but it's a LOT better than the one i had before them]

    Bandwidth: download = 2Mbit/sec, upload = 300kbit/sec for US$60/month.
Bandwidth reliability: 200kBytes/sec download, 32kBytes/sec upload only with html, eD2k and torrent at 150/24kB (Down/Up, max.), encrypted. Without encryption is useless.
    Bandwidth guaranty = only 10%.
Installed by people without any knowledge (didn't know MTU, Latency, Packet Loss... and when I saw the "technician" typing REGEDIT on my computer... oh... I turn off everything and ask them to test with their own equipment = none!)
Motorola Surfboard SBV5120 supplied (with VoIP+echo)
Technical assistance is the worst, 16 phone calls + 2 e-mails and they still don't understand that 150ms avg (430ms peak) from the cable modem to the first hop is horrible!
As soon as possible, I will change to another ISP.

my full tests history at: »/testhistory/1469540/7f1e3

EDIT: One month later, many calls, and EXTREME HIGH LATENCY persist! 10 months ago this was the best ISP ! I don't know what they did, but in the last 2 months it is the worst.
