I live in Huntsville, Alabama. I use a Samsung Vibrant phone. I use a program called PDANet to tether. There is a free version, but I bought the full for ~$15 (I think). This is a non 4G phone, only 3G. Yes I just used »speedtest.knology.net/ and got 5.93Mb down. Speed does very a lot though, But usually get at least ~2.5 to 4.5Mbs. Upload is very consistant, always a little over 500kb. ping 75-100. Going with a non contract account, Even More Plus gives much cheaper rates than a contract (but no phone discount and you have to go to a store (go to a corporate owned location!)) This isn't stand alone internet the feature is a $20 difference when paired with a voice/text plan (which I need anyways). I had knology which was great, but pricey. I just can't go back to paying that. My only wish is that it worked better for gaming. Some servers, some games run fine. But server list are short now that have decent ping. get connection issues sometimes in the middle of a game which is frustrating. But for the money its great and then I have it on my phone to use when I'm out. Its unlimited. I downloaded 20 gig yesterday. So unless I start making considerably more money, or these cable internet providers actually get competitive on price/performance. I'm stuck.

Tethering with either a rooted Nexus One, or a stock MyTouch 4G works
superbly in both New York and Chicago. The HSPA+ network has only been
getting better over the year, and since the official launch it has
been fantastic. Often times network speeds exceed 2mbps. I use the
service over using hotel wifi/ethernet because it always exceeds the
reliability and performance of either. T-Mobile is doing a great job
here.

I first began with T-Mobile in 2001, when Jamie Lee Curtis was still around pushing the VoiceStream name. Nine years later, I remain with them, uninterrupted, and I see no reason I will not remain with them for another nine. Their customer service and great rates has brought me this far, and their commitment to the future will keep me around. I've used all four major carriers in the US, and I won't go back to any of the others.

T-Mobile is not given enough respect for their service. Years ago, when they bought up all of the smaller carriers, their coverage was not that great nationwide (however, it was wherever I needed it). While the other three had spent a decade growing and building out, the public believed that T-Mobile had done no such thing. In less than two years, T-Mobile went from no 3G at all, to almost completely matching AT&T's coverage. And in that same time, has begun to surpass AT&T's speed. Throw on top of that the fact that T-Mobile's network isn't as crowded, and you get a very healthy mobile broadband experience. As I write this, my PC is tethered to my phone, and my browsing experience is almost the same as when it's running through my BrightHouse connection. With the current rollout of HSPA+, I believe I could drop my cable connection and rely on this $30/month wireless connection and not think twice about it. T-Mobile has never charged a dime to tether or share their data connection.

While the rest of the country is wrapped up in the iPhone hype, I couldn't be more happy with my HTC HD2 running on T-Mobile. I love being able to whip out this phone in front of my iPhone-using friends, showing them this amazing screen, demonstrating the blazing fast responsiveness, turning the phone into a wi-fi hotspot to share the 3G connection, and flying through web pages like I was on a desktop connected to a cable modem. Of course, the next thing to bring up is the price. Two HD2s for $199 (with the current BOGO offer), $166 for 5 lines after tax, including two smartphones with 3G data, two regular lines, and a home line. The four cell lines share a myFaves family plan with 400 shared minutes, unlimited mobile-to-mobile, unlimited messaging, and free nights and weekends. The home phone is unlimited calling in the US. Between the M2M and myFaves, these four lines never come close to using the 400 minutes. The current unlimited plans may better suit others' needs and result in about the same monthly charge.

Overall, T-Mobile has beat my expectations of a mobile provider. The other three couldn't even meet them. I have seen rapid expansion of their network over the years and the pace has picked up even more recently. I have managed to convert most of my friends and family into very happy T-Mobile customers. I have used my phone deep in the forest where you would think that T-Mobile would be the one provider that does not have service, and I end up being the only person getting coverage. I actually enjoy having to call customer service or going into my local store when I need to speak with them (and the fact that I've never called to complain or fix something they made a mistake on). I cherish the fact that if something comes up and I won't be able to pay my bill on time, they have always worked with me to keep my service on.

T-Mobile knows how to keep a customer happy, and that's why this customer has kept T-Mobile for so many years.

Can't say enough good things about T-Mobile, an all around incredible service provider...I NEVER have to call customer service, EVER! OK, that's an exageration, but seriously, two or three calls in 6 years is AMAZING! I wish they had more knowledgeable tech support reps, the few times I did have to call tool forever, but to their credit, they stayed until the issue was fixed. Also, limited ability to customize the services I want for the price I'm willing to pay, but I know I'm cheap, and they deliver incredible value, way better than any of their competition, and with higher quality service...who could ask for anything more?

I'm a happy customer in the San Francisco bay area.

First, the contracts are simple with no hidden fees and gotchas. They even let you buy the phone contract-free and get a cheaper plan as a result because you are not getting a subsidy. Other carriers will continue charging the same plan rate whether you buy a subsidized phone or not which is a rip off. T-Mobile will let you off a contract by simply asking you to pay the remainder of the phone price, no penalties and fees. It couldn't be any more straightforward. When I expressed my surprise, the rep said that T-Mobile wants its customers to feel comfortable with their plans and not bound by onerous terms. What a concept. Way to go T-Mobile.

I've owned a T-Mobile 3G phone when they just launched their 3G network in 2007. Back then it was a bit patchy but I can say that now their coverage is really good, and they also allow you to roam on AT&T's network. I'm currently on a BlackBerry 9700 which I bought contract-free. The plan includes two key features: first is UMA calling, which is basically WiFi calling from anywhere with WiFi access, no special equipment required. Calls are counted as local minutes even if made overseas. Another feature is tethering. While other carriers and manufacturers make a big fuss and constantly fight with users over tethering, a BlackBerry owner on T-Mobile can tether as part of their plan. It's fast, reliable and doesn't cost anything extra other than the standard data plan for the phone. I just tested the tethering connection speed and got 815/154 Kbps.

I highly recommend T-Mobile.

I've had t-mobile for 9 years, and I have been very happy with them since I started. Their customer service has always been friendly and helpful. I've always had good reception, and dropped calls are a thing of the past. The call quality is crisp and clear. Everytime I think my call has dropped, I ask if the other person is still on the phone, and they are. Absolutely zero background noise.

Their EDGE data network is very fast, and on my old phone (HTC Dream) I can could stream 128kbps streaming music hiccup free over EDGE. Try doing that on ATT.

As of last August, TMO expanded their 3g to my area. And then in December they doubled the size of it in my city. Pretty impressive considering how late they came to the game imo. Download speeds are now between 600-800kbps on average. Uploads from 300-500kbps. Not bad for 3g. Typically slower than ATT on the downloads, although it seems the uploads are faster.

UPDATE: As of May, they've upgraded speeds in much of the area. My current speed tests are showing ~3.8mbps down, ~350kbps up. About twice as fast as my girlfriend's Sprint EvDO Hero gets.

UPDATE: As of July, they rolled out HSPA+, and speeds jumped higher. Now speeds are routinely 4-6mbps, with 600kbps uploads. Their uploads still need to improve, imo, but their downloads max out my phone's 7.2mbps radio.

Their 3g coverage has continued to expand over the past 8 months, too. Now the entire metro is covered with their 3g, so I don't see EDGE unless i'm on the road outside the city. Of course, their network is still smaller than ATT's, but it seems like it's constantly growing and getting faster.

People like to bitch about their small native coverage area, but I think they haven't learned how to read a map. From Chicago, IL to Grand Junction, CO - Austin, TX to Saint Louis, MO - I get coverage wherever I drive.

Overall, I am extremely happy with TMO.

I've been with T-mobile for about 8 years now. Everything has been rock solid. Obviously coverage varies all across the country, but in my area it has been quite reliable. Phone selection has always been a downside with these guys, but now that I have my G2, my thoughts on that issue have changed immensely. It's nice to see they're introducing more phones to their lineup.

Their no-contract plans are also great. Recently converted since I don't like to be held to restriction with upgrading phones, and it gives me a nice $20/mo decrease.

We'll see how their HSPA+ upgrades perform, but so far the latency has been quite impressive for cellular service.

The $30 per month rate is actually the internet connectivity on my new Android based G2 phone. There is a nifty little app that allows me to use it to connect my laptop to the Internet anywhere I have cell coverage. Totally worth it!

From what I can tell, T-Mobile Internet is offered at three distinct speeds, depending on where you're located. There is the Edge Network, which is available everywhere T-Mobile has coverage. This is their slowest, but most widely distributed network. Next is their 3G service, which is enjoyably fast, and available in virtually every urban market I've been to. Finally, they have the 3G+ (I think that's what they call it.) service which is available in many larger urban areas. When available, it shows up as "H" on my phone. As cellular Internet goes, it's screaming fast. I live about an hour north of Seattle in a small community, and it's available at my house. Very cool.

I've been with T-Mobile for various services now for about seven years. So far, I'm a happy customer. Even when they do things to annoy me, their customer service is usually very responsive and good to work with.

T-mobile has the newest 3g network resulting in speeds that rival competitors 4g. They are launching HSPA+ in select locations which is considered 3.75g and is the fastest. Service can be used through a specific USB computer internet package for $40/ mo for 5gb of usage ($40/mo for customers who already have a wireless account $60/mo for cusotmers who have no other T-mobile lines aside from the USB stick). After 5gb cap is reached there is no overage but speed is slightly slower untill your next bill cycle starts.

Service can also be used through T-mobiles many Android devices and downloading either the Easy Tether or PDAnet applications. The Garminfone has software which can be downloaded from Garmins website and the device has a "Use phone forcomputer internet" option in the Wireless Manager folder under Data.

T-Mobiles data packages for phones is $30 for 10gb without overage but if you reach 10gb the speed will be limited untill next bill cycle. If you are on an older plan there is a chance you can get the same data for 24.99 but this is not available on newer Even More plans.

It is not possible to test Tmobile speeds through dslreports at this time but I have had average DL speeds of 3 mb/s peaking at 4mb/s. The new HSPA+ devices at this time can peak at 5 mb/s real time DL speeds and is expected to increase. This was tested in the Seattle area where usage is high.Faster speeds may be achieved in lower usage areas.

3g vs 4g names are just gimmicks

Listening the various Telco ads you would think that you could buy a boatload of 4g and make a network faster. This is inherently false. 4g stands for 4th generation network.

You can consider the 1st cellular phone suitcases as 1g
2g would be the 1st digital phones with texting and limited internet.

3g is the most common and has higher speeds anywhere from .5mb/s - 4mb/s depending on carrier and location. 3g is usually shown as an icon when any 3g capable phone is connected to the 3g network

4g is of course the newest technological generation and you can see speeds anywhere from 2-6mb/s of realtime DL speeds.

Speedtest.net is reliable Androind & Iphone app that can give you an accurate idea of what your carriers capabilities are. Hopefully dslreports launches its own app or finds a way to guage DL speeds with cellular carrier based internet.
