I been using this service for the last year and a half and found it very reliable though at times the speed would be very slow (1xrtt speed and not evdo) - probably because of location. I have not run into a location (LA County)where I can not connect to Verizon broadband. You can very much connect where there is cell phone service.
The setup on my Dell Inspiron 1505 (software installed) was very quick and one call to Verizon customer service activated the card in less than 5 minutes. The major drawback is this service is very expensive compared to the price of regular DSL. I am using the V640 express card. The service says unlimited but I have been hearing from other users that if you download too much data that Verizon will cancel your service and charge you early termination fee. I wish Verizon had a built in wireless card for their service like 3G. I may consider switching to 3G.

In OCT 06 Springfield, IL was made a Broadband Access Zone for Verizon.
They say max is 2mb down but usually is 400-700k. They dont say on how much is up. The first day I got it I had 2mb down and 7 mb up and it stayed at that it just wasnt bursts. I had that all over the city, but after the second day I was hardly getting 400k down and 56k up and most of the time it kept switching me from the Broadband Access to the National Access which is max of 144kb down but usually 60-80kb and lets not even talk about the upload on the National. (And I have 3 bars of signal and it keeps switching from the Broadband to National and Verizon says Im out of the area but Im sorry unless they moved the tower it worked great the first day I had 4 bars of the Broadband. I think there network is too congested.)
I paid $100 for the card with $50 mail in rebate, $35 activation and $79.99 per month since Im not a Verizon Voice Customer if I was it would be $59.99 per month. There is a 15 day worry free trial no ands if or buts you dont like it you return it they refund it.
The ip changes every time you d/c and they have this so fire walled you cant even do a remote access.
Also Dont think about downloading, uploading, or streaming music or videos, or doing voip(one since it violates there terms of service two it wont work for shit since its so choppy) automatic termination no questions asked and no appeal process.
Its worth it if you dont have Internet thats why I first got it to see if it would work and it worked nice that first day and I was going to keep it but after that the service just isnt good enough to keep. Its also worth it if you Travel a lot since they do have great coverage, I think in the Springfield market its just not fully setup properly or its just too congested.)
UPDATE 02/05/2007 - Well I decided to keep the service. Its working hella better now since its connecting to the Rev-A im getting great signal and great speeds. Its worth it now. Ill keep you posted.
Also I would of considered switching to Sprint Mobile Broadband or even Cingular but none of them can offer highspeed down here.
UPDATED - 06/09/2007 - I ended up buying a new notebook and needed to get an Express card. Verizon was total asses about selling me a new one they wouldnt offer any kind of discount just told me it would cost $300+ (full retail). I ended up buying an V740 on ebay for $150 and am using it now. I will be cancelling Verizon when Cingular 3G comes out in my area. The service is good but they could of worked something out.

I got this as a means to be able to travel (for work and play) and work (ie..working vacations), so that i could work from anywhere and not need to search for hotspots, or head to B&N/Starbucks (Keep in mind, so far, I've only been in and around TN and CA(lifornia). I rode the train from SFO to Sunnnyale and did'nt drop a single packet.
Because of the unreliability of Comcast I'm pretty much using this full time. It's not as good as a wired connection b/c the RTT to the tower (and this is totally contigent upon your proximity to the nearest tower) is ~100ms so there's that add 90ms latency that you would'nt normally have, but my work mostly involves SSH sessions so it's perfect for what I need. (The RTT however on the Caltrain in the Bay Area was a steady 20ms to the gateway).
Also the speed tests are not bad..I avg 500kb down and 200kb up, so while i'd use it for 90% of what I do do, I probably would'nt go downloading torrents or playing online games with it...
bottom line..it's an awesome backup for when you have a flakey provider who is clueless as to how to fix thier network and you need to update a ticket, and it's great if you like to travel a lot.
The reason I put everything as "3"s is b/c I did most of the research on my own using other forums, and Verizon's web page. I'm using the V640 (since it was 9.00 and I did'nt see any added features on the V740). Install was a snap..opened the box inserted the card, my macbook found the right driver, I just needed to add the phone number login and pass info and click connect.
Have not needed Tech support *yet*...

"Great alternative to dial-up!"

Thanks to Fox_McCloud, another user of this site, I finally got this thing working. First of all do NOT do this with EVDO service, as it's illegal. Only use it with standard 1xRTT service.
Download and uploads speeds are symmetrical, and pretty good if you are used to dial-up. I usually get an average 128/128 connection using this. Ping times vary. I usually get around 250ms to 400ms. Not as good as dial-up, but it blows away satellite's 700ms-1500ms pings.
I have been using this with a USB cord and have has pretty good results. Best of all, it is completely free! All you need to Verizon wireless service, and that's it. From what I know, there is no FAP(unlimited). I have transferred around 500MB-600MB already in the last 2 weeks, and haven't gotten any complaints yet. Verizon's EVDO has a FAP of 5GB though, but I don't think it applies to this because in their National Access policy they don't mention 5GB anywhere.
The only bad thing about this is that it uses up your air minutes. But after 9PM and on weekends, air minutes are free, so surf away during those hours.
Overall, I am quite pleased, and I seldom get any disconnects. It has been pretty solid for me. I would recommend this to anyone who has Verizon phone service, and is stuck on dial-up, or is worried about breaking the FAP on their satellite service like I am(Wildblue), or doesn't want to shell out money for the super high prices that are charged for ISDN connections(though ISDN has much better ping times.)
Now after you read my review, your are probably wondering how you do this. Well first of all like I said, don't even bother with an EVDO phone, it's illegal! Now for those with their 1xRTT phones, this is how you do it. First, connect your phone to your computer with USB or bluetooth, and make sure you install the modem drivers (you should be able to download them at the website of the people who manufactured your phone(i.e Samsung).
Set up a new dial-up connection, and for the User name it should be "XXXXXXXXXX@vzw3g.com" (replace the X's with your cell phone number with NO dashes, spaces, etc.), and the Password should be "vzw".
Just remember it uses air minutes, only do it after 9PM or on weekends!!!
You can also use the cell phone as a modem to connect to other dial-up ISPs such as Earthlink, AOL, etc, but for some reason you will be limited to 14.4K speeds, I am not sure why. I have tried it with multiple ISPs. You can only get the high speeds through Verizon's service.

Pages load instantly! I have internet, email, im, and can even text from my computer. I can keep up with my life anywhere I go! I had Comcast before this with so many interruptions and downtime that you would not believe. I have had Verizon Wireless for a year now and have no downtime or errors to report. The Broadband card was free with activation of a two year contract at $59.99 /Mo. Installing the software took me about 15 minutes tops! Plus, I have 24 hour tech support as well as on site tech support at Verizon Wireless Stores.

Just got kicked off (for the second time) from VZW Broadband Access. Very pissed. I had VZW BB access for ~ 9 months.
Totally bogus, arbitrary, unclear rules on data downloads. (cant exceet ~ 150MB/day or 5GB/month.).
I use this for work - I live in a semi rural part of the SF Bay area and I have no cable or DSL availability.
They provide no tool or warning, that this will happen, Last time it happened, I just re-uped (at a lower monthly rate!). Two times is too much however.
Overall where I live I could count on about 600 k, down and 130 k up. With occational moments of 1m down and sometimes only 100 k down. up never seemd to change from about ~ 130k.
When I roam most locations around the Si Valley give me ~ 1.5M down.
I am giving Sprint EV-DO a try and will report

Ok, a while ago I found out that I could access Verizon's 1xRTT network by using my phone as a modem. What was great about this, is that it only uses up minutes during peak times! (other than that, no KB charge and it doesn't use up minutes on the nights and weekends).
I usually get speeds around 130-137K with latency that can be as low as 330ms.
The upload, however, is horrible, I can't even beat my dial-up upload speed of 24K!
Also, the phone will routinely drop the connection, for no apparent reason...thus, why connection reliability is mediocre.
Also, Verizon doesn't advertise this service, even though it's completely legal, thus, why pre-sales information is so low.
Tech-support? Half the people at Verizon have no clue that you can even do this, and some that do know, don't fully understand it.
Still, it's "free", and works marvelously if I want to download a large file 3x faster than dial-up.
Explanation on the price: you have to have national enhanced services in order to use it, which is usually enabled when you get unlimited text messaging (which costs me $5 a month).
